Synthesis and Crystal Structure of New Indium Iodate (K<Subscript>0.6</Subscript>Na<Subscript>0.4</Subscript>Ba)In[IO<Subscript>3</Subscript>]<Subscript>6</Subscript>

Crystals of new indium iodate (K_0.6Na_0.4Ba)In[IO₃]₆ were prepared by the hydrothermal synthesis. The unit-cell parameters are a = 11.3984(3) Å, с = 11.3817(3) Å, sp. gr. R3?. The chemical formula of the compound was derived from the structure determination and refinement with anisotropic displacement parameters to R = 0.0284. In the structure the InO₆ octahedra share vertices with six umbrella-like [IO₃]–groups typical of iodates and form isolated 3?-symmetric charged \(\rm{In[IO_{3}]_6^{3-}}\) clusters. Large Ba, K, and Na cations occupy a common site on a threefold axis due to the isomorphous substitution and compensate the charge of the clusters. The new structure extends the family of the recently discovered alkali-metal and barium iodates containing Ti and Zr atoms in octahedral sites. The iodate K₂Ge[IO₃]₆ containing Ge atoms in the centers of octahedra is the parent compound of this structural family.     

Catalyst-Free Arylation of Tertiary Phosphines with Diaryliodonium Salts Enabled by Visible Light

The visible-light-induced arylation of tertiary phosphines with aryl(mesityl)iodonium triflates to produce the quaternary phosphonium salts occurs under mild, metal, and catalyst-free conditions. Photo-excited EDA complexes between diaryliodonium salts and phosphines supposedly enable this transformation, which is difficult to achieve through the traditional ground-state reactions. Demonstrating high functional group tolerance, broad scope, and complete selectivity of the aryl group transfer, the method is particularly compatible with sterically congested phosphines, which are challenging under metal-based catalytic methods.

“Four-component” assembly of polyaromatic 4H-cyclopenta[b]thiophene structures based on GaCl3-promoted reaction of styrylmalonates with 5-phenylthiophene-2-carbaldehyde

New “four-component” self-assembly of polyaromatic thiophene structures based on styrylmalonates and 5-phenylthiophene-2-carbaldehyde has been developed. This process is promoted by GaCl₃ and involves two [2?+?3]-annulation steps on the CHO-groups and para-substitution into one Ph-ring. The main feature of discovered process is a high diastereoselectivity with a significant increase in molecular complexity. The resulting polyaromatic structures containing two thiophene moieties in each structure have intense color and strong absorption in a near UV spectral region with absorption maxima in the range of 257–360?nm.

Unprecedented Diastereoselective Arylogous Michael Addition of Unactivated Phthalides

The first highly enantioselective arylogous Michael reaction (AMR) of 3-unsubstituted phthalides has been described. This phase-transfer methodology, which uses catalytic amounts of KOH/18-crown-6 catalyst in mesitylene in the presence of N,O-bis(trimethylsilyl)acetamide (BSA), gives access to a broad range of 3-monosubstituted phthalides with high levels of syn diastereoselectivity and good yields, starting from 3-unsubstituted derivatives and diverse α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds. The reaction also applies to unactivated 3-alkyl phthalides to afford 3,3-dialkyl derivatives. A plausible mechanism has been suggested. DFT analysis of possible transition states gives a rationale of the high syn diastereoselectivity observed and its correlation with the solvent's dielectric constant.
