Supersonic Rarefied Flow Past a Cascade of Transverse Flat Plates

The results of numerical calculations of the supersonic rarefied flow through an infinite, periodic cascade of flat plates set transverse to the incident flow are presented. The flow in the vicinity of the cascade is described on the basis of the kinetic Boltzmann equation. The Knudsen numbers, based on the plate span, the distances between the plates and the scalelength of the flow under consideration, range from 0.2 to 0.003. Both steady-state regimes with a shock attached to the cascade and time-dependent ones with an upstream-traveling shock are investigated.     

Computer simulation and analysis of the Holweck pump in the transient regime

The results of simulating the Holweck pump by numerically solving the Boltzmann kinetic equation are reported. The nonlinear collision integral is calculated using the conservative projection method. The translation operator is approximated with tetrahedral grids. The ratio of pressures in pumped-in and pumpedout containers is studied as a function of the gas density (rarefaction) and the radius and rotation velocity of the rotor at Knudsen numbers close to unity.

Thermal correction to resistivity in dilute Si-MOSFET two-dimensional systems

Neglecting electron-electron interactions and quantum interference effects, we calculate the classical resistivity of a two-dimensional electron (hole) gas, taking into account the degeneracy and the thermal correction due to the combined Peltier and Seebeck effects. The resistivity is found to be a universal function of the temperature, expressed in units of (h/e²)(k_Fl)^?1. Analysis of the compressibility and thermopower points to the thermodynamic nature of the metal-insulator transition in two-dimensional systems. We reproduce the beating pattern of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in both the crossed field configuration and Si-MOSFET valley splitting cases. The consequences of the integer quantum Hall effect in a dilute Si-MOSFET two-dimensional electron gas are discussed. The giant parallel magnetoresistivity is argued to result from the magnetic-field-driven disorder.     

Peltier-effect-induced correction to ohmic resistance

The standard ohmic measurements by means of two extra leads contain an additional thermal correction to resistance. The current results in heating (cooling) at the first (second) sample contact because of the Peltier effect. The contact temperatures are different. The measured voltage is the sum of the ohmic voltage swing and the Peltier-effect-induced thermoelectromotive force that is linear in the current. As a result, the thermal correction to the resistance measured exists as I→0. The correction could be comparable with the ohmic resistance. Above some critical frequency depending on thermal inertial effects, the thermal correction disappears.
