Hydrothermal synthesis of potassium molybdenum oxide bronzes: structure-inheriting solid-state route to blue bronze and dissolution/deposition route to red bronze

The hydrothermal syntheses of the alkali metal molybdenum bronzes from starting solids (H_xMoO₃) with structural affinities to the desired products were investigated. Single-phase potassium blue and red bronzes were prepared by the hydrothermal treatments at around 430 K, and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, and SEM. The formation processes of these two bronzes during the hydrothermal treatments were found to differ. The blue bronze was formed by a structure-inheriting solid-state route from H_xMoO₃ with x<0.3, whereas the red bronze was formed for x>0.3 through a solution dissolution/deposition route via the formation of MoO₃+MoO₂.     

Diastereoselective synthesis of cyclopropane amino acids using diazo compounds generated in situ

A simple and high-yielding method for the preparation of cyclopropane amino acids is described. The novel method involves the one-pot cyclopropanation of readily available dehydroamino acids using aryl and unsaturated diazo compounds generated in situ from the corresponding tosylhydrazone salts. It was found that thermal 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition followed by nitrogen extrusion gave the cyclopropane amino acid derivatives with good E selectivity, while reactions in the presence of meso-tetraphenylporphyrin iron chloride gave predominantly the corresponding Z isomers. The synthetic utility of this process was demonstrated in the synthesis of (+/-)-(Z)-2,3-methanophenylalanine [(+/-)-(Z)-1], the anti-Parkinson (+/-)-(E)-2,3-methano-m-tyrosine [(+/-)-(E)-2], and the natural product (+/-)-coronamic acid [(+/-)-3].     

BIMP‐Catalyzed 1,3‐Prototropic Shift for the Highly Enantioselective Synthesis of Conjugated Cyclohexenones

A bifunctional iminophosphorane (BIMP)‐catalysed enantioselective synthesis of α,β‐unsaturated cyclohexenones through a facially selective 1,3‐prototropic shift of β,γ‐unsaturated prochiral isomers, under mild reaction conditions and in short reaction times, on a range of structurally diverse substrates, is reported. α,β‐Unsaturated cyclohexenone products primed for downstream derivatisation were obtained in high yields (up to 99 %) and consistently high enantioselectivity (up to 99 % ee). Computational studies into the reaction mechanism and origins of enantioselectivity, including multivariate linear regression of TS energy, were carried out and the obtained data were found to be in good agreement with experimental findings.     

Hydrothermal Synthesis of the Blue Potassium Molybdenum Bronze, K0.28MoO3

Blue potassium molybdenum bronze, K_0.28MoO₃, was prepared by hydrothermal heating hydrogen molybdenum bronze in KCl solution at 431 K. Hydrated molybdenum bronze was found formed as an intermediate during the conversion from hydrogen molybdenum bronze to blue bronze. The hydrothermal method proved itself an easy and effective for synthesis of mixed-valence compounds.     

Relations between coordinate and potential scaling in the high-density limit

Exact relations are derived between scaling to the high-density limit of density functional theory and taking Z to infinity for nondegenerate atoms. Gorling-Levy perturbation results are deduced for hydrogenic densities. The kinetic contribution to the correlation energy is also studied, and estimates given for its value for neutral atoms. Popular approximate functionals are tested against these benchmarks.
