Despite significant progress in development of bioanalytical devices cost, complexity, access to reagents and lack of infrastructure have prevented use of these technologies in resource‐limited regions. To provide a sustainable tool in the global effort to combat infectious diseases the diagnostic device must be low cost, simple to operate and read, robust, and have sensitivity and specificity comparable to laboratory analysis. In this mini‐review we describe recent work using laser machined plastic laminates to produce diagnostic devices that are capable of a wide variety of bioanalytical measurements and show great promise towards future use in low‐resource environments.  相似文献

Carbonized lignin has been proposed as a sustainable and domestic source of activated, amorphous, graphitic, and nanostructured carbon for many industrial applications as the structure can be tuned through processing conditions. However, the inherent variability of lignin and its complex physicochemical structure resulting from feedstock and pulping selection make the Process-Structure-Property-Performance (PSPP) relationships hard to define. In this work, radial distribution functions (RDFs) from synchrotron X-ray and neutron scattering of lignin-based carbon composites (LBCCs) are investigated using the Hierarchical Decomposition of the Radial Distribution Function (HDRDF) modelling method to characterize the local atomic environment and develop quantitative PSPP relationships. PSPP relationships for LBCCs defined by this work include crystallite size dependence on lignin feedstock as well as increasing crystalline volume fraction, nanoscale composite density, and crystallite size with increasing reduction temperature.  相似文献

Peak broadening in ion mobility (IM) is a relatively predictable process and abnormally broad peaks can be indicative of the presence of unresolved species. Here, we introduce a new ion mobility peak fitting (IM_FIT) software package for automated and systematic determination of traveling wave ion mobility (TWIM) unresolved species. To identify IM unresolved species, the IM_FIT software generates a trend line by plotting ions' mobility peak widths as a function of their arrival times. Utilizing user-defined thresholds, IM_FIT allows for automated and rapid detection of ions that deviate from the peak width trend line. To demonstrate the advantages of IM_FIT for automated detection of IM unresolved species, IM-mass spectrometry (IM-MS) data from a sample mixture containing polypropylene glycol and multiple peptides were analyzed. A total of 14 out of the 34 observed singly-charged IM peaks above 5% relative abundance (i.e., signal-to-noise ratios above ∼200) were tagged as potentially co-eluting ions by IM_FIT. Subsequently, the 14 IM peaks tagged as potentially unresolved (presumably, peaks corresponding to co-eluting compounds), were further analyzed by automated IM deconvolution (AIMD), liquid chromatography-IM-MS (LC-IM-MS), and/or ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry. Using the aforementioned techniques, more than 85% of the tagged IM peaks (12 out of 14) were confirmed to contain co-eluting ions. As an additional new finding, IM_FIT facilitated the discovery of an unexpected sequence-scrambled y-type fragment ion.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics simulations of binary mixtures of benzene, 1,3,5-trifluorobenzene and hexafluorobenzene with dimethylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate were carried out to examine their macroscopic and microscopic properties. The energies and volumes of mixing of these mixtures correlate well with observed microscopic properties including coordination number about the aromatic compound. The local ordering of the ions about an aromatic molecule was found to depend on the quadrupole moment of the aromatic species and to remain qualitatively the same on varying the mole fraction of the aromatic species. Interaction energies showed the most significant interactions to be between the aromatic molecule and the ions located about its equator. These findings have implications for the practical use of ionic liquids as solvents for chemical processes.  相似文献

This study explores the feasibility of using a combination of experimental and theoretical 1‐bond 13C─13C scalar couplings (1JCC) to establish structure in organic compounds, including unknowns. Historically, nJCC and nJCH studies have emphasized 2 and 3‐bond couplings, yet 1JCC couplings exhibit significantly larger variations. Moreover, recent improvements in experimental measurement and data processing methods have made 1JCC data more available. Herein, an approach is evaluated in which a collection of theoretical structures is created from a partial nuclear magnetic resonance structural characterization. Computed 1JCC values are compared to experimental data to identify candidates giving the best agreement. This process requires knowledge of the error in theoretical methods, thus the B3LYP, B3PW91, and PBE0 functionals are evaluated by comparing to 27 experimental values from INADEQUATE. Respective errors of ±1.2, ±3.8, and ±2.3 Hz are observed. An initial test of this methodology involves the natural product 5‐methylmellein. In this case, only a single candidate matches experimental data with high statistical confidence. This analysis establishes the intramolecular hydrogen‐bonding arrangement, ring heteroatom identity, and conformation at one position. This approach is then extended to hydroheptelidic acid, a natural product not fully characterized in prior studies. The experimental/theoretical approach proposed herein identifies a single best‐fit structure from among 26 candidates and establishes, for the first time, 1 configuration and 3 conformations to complete the characterization. These results suggest that accurate and complete structural characterizations of many moderately sized organic structures (<800 Da) may be possible using only 1JCC data.  相似文献

Summary: Macrocyclic phenyl ether ketones were prepared via pseudo high dilution condensation. Irradiation of these rings with UV light in a solution containing isopropyl alcohol as hydrogen donor resulted in a photo‐induced reduction of benzophenone to benzopinacol and the formation linked macrocycles. These rings can be heated to undergo ring‐opening polymerization and produce a polymer network or they can be added to a polycondensation reaction to prepare poly(ether ether ketones) with variable degrees of cross‐linking.

A fast, reagentless, and direct method is presented for the mass spectrometric analysis of olive oil without any sample pretreatment whatsoever. An ambient ionization technique, the low‐temperature plasma (LTP) probe, based on dielectric barrier discharge, is used to detect both minor and trace components (free fatty acids, phenolics and volatiles) in raw untreated olive oil. The method allows the measurement of free fatty acids (the main quality control parameter used to grade olive oil according to quality classes), selected bioactive phenolic compounds, and volatiles. The advantages and limitations of the direct analysis of extremely complex mixtures by the ambient ionization/tandem mass spectrometry combination are discussed and illustrated. The data presage the possible large‐scale application of direct mass spectrometric analysis methods in the characterization of olive oil and other foodstuffs. George Gamow (1904-1968) was among the first of the many brilliant scientists who forsook Europe for the United States in the early 1930s. Although most were fleeing the fascist imperium of Hitler and Mussolini, Gamow was one of a few who managed to escape the burgeoning despotism of Stalin in the Soviet Union. His early application of quantum mechanics to the atomic nucleus and his subsequent insight into the role played by the physics of the atom and its nucleus in stars, galaxies, and the universe identifies him as a scientist of unusual genius. Gamow displayed a boisterous, infectious - almost Rutherfordian - interest in all aspects of pure science. His interests were broad and his industry prodigious. His scientific output covered areas as diverse as nuclear physics, astrophysics, cosmology, biological genetics, and the fascinating question of the relationship of the large-scale structure and development of the universe to the properties of elementary particles and fields. He also was an immensely imaginative and prolific author of popular expositions on scientific subjects. One who is as well-known for his authorship of the Mr. Tompkins series of science popularizations as for his contributions to the development of the physical consequences of the big-bang theory of the expanding universe and the prediction of the cosmic background radiation must be unique in the scientific pantheon.  相似文献
