From superhydrophobic‐ to superhydrophilic‐patterned poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐chlorotrifluoroethylene) architectures as a novel platform for biotechnological applications

The manufacture of three‐dimensional patterned electroactive poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐chlorotrifluoroethylene) microstructures with tailored architecture, morphology, and wettability is presented. The patterned microstructures are fabricated using a simple, effective, low cost, and reproducible technique based on microfluidic technology. These novel structures can represent innovative platforms for advanced strategies in a wide range of biotechnological applications, including tissue engineering, drug delivery, microfluidic, and sensors and actuators devices. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Copper-Catalyzed Electrophilic Thiolation of Organozinc Halides by Using N-Thiophthalimides Leading to Polyfunctional Thioethers

(Hetero)aryl, benzylic, and alkyl zinc halides were thiolated with N-thiophthalimides at 25 °C within 1 h in the presence of 5–10 % Cu(OAc)₂ ⋅ H₂O to furnish the corresponding polyfunctionalized thioethers in good yields. This electrophilic thiolation was extended to the introduction of trifluoromethylthio (SCF₃), thiocyanate (SCN), and selenophenyl (SePh) groups. The utility of this method was shown in a seven-step synthesis of a potent cathepsin D inhibitor in 34 % overall yield.     

Peroxodicarbonate as a Green Oxidizer for the Selective Degradation of Kraft Lignin into Vanillin

Lignin, the world's largest resource of renewable aromatics, with annually roughly 50 million tons of accruing technical lignin, mainly Kraft lignin, is highly underdeveloped regarding the production of monoaromatics. We demonstrate the oxidative depolymerization of Kraft lignin at 180 °C to produce vanillin 1 in yields up to 6.2 wt % and 92 % referred to the maximum yield gained from the quantification reaction utilizing nitrobenzene. Using peroxodicarbonate (C₂O₆²⁻) as “green” oxidizer for the degradation, toxic and/or harmful reagents are prevented. Also, the formed waste can serve as makeup chemical in the pulping process. Na₂C₂O₆ is synthesized in an ex-cell electrolysis of aqueous Na₂CO₃ at BDD anodes, achieving a yield of Na₂C₂O₆ with 41 %. At least, the oxidation and degradation of Kraft lignin is analysis via UV/Vis and NMR spectroscopy.     

Phenanthriporphyrin: An Antiaromatic Aceneporphyrinoid as a Ligand for a Hypervalent Organophosphorus(V) Moiety

The incorporation of a phenanthrene moiety into a porphyrin framework results in the formation of a hybrid macrocycle—phenanthriporphyrin—merging the structural features of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and porphyrins. An antiaromatic aceneporphyrinoid, adopting the trianionic {CCNN} core, is suitable for the incorporation of a phosphorus(V) center to form a hypervalent organophosphorus(V) derivative.     

Conversion of E4 (E4=P4, As4, AsP3) by Ni(0) and Ni(I) Synthons – A Comparative Study

The reactivity of white phosphorus and yellow arsenic towards two different nickel nacnac complexes is investigated. The nickel complexes [(L¹Ni)₂tol] ( 1 , L¹=[{N(C₆H₃ⁱPr₂-2,6)C(Me)}₂CH]⁻) and [K₂][(L¹Ni)₂(μ,η^{1 : 1}-N₂)] ( 6 ) were reacted with P₄, As₄ and the interpnictogen compound AsP₃, respectively, yielding the homobimetallic complexes [(L¹Ni)₂(μ-η²,κ¹:η²,κ¹-E₄)] (E=P ( 2 a ), As ( 2 b ), AsP₃ ( 2 c )), [(L¹Ni)₂(μ,η^{3 : 3}-E₃)] (E=P ( 3 a ), As ( 3 b )) and [K@18-c-6(thf)₂][L¹Ni(η^{1 : 1}-E₄)] (E=P ( 7 a ), As ( 7 b )), respectively. Heating of 2 a , 2 b or 2 c also leads to the formation of 3 a or 3 b . Furthermore, the reactivity of these compounds towards reduction agents was investigated, leading to [K₂][(L¹Ni)₂(μ,η^{2 : 2}-P₄)] ( 4 ) and [K@18-c-6(thf)₃][(L¹Ni)₂(μ,η^{3 : 3}-E₃)] (E=P ( 5 a ), As ( 5 b )), respectively. Compound 4 shows an unusual planarization of the initial Ni₂P₄-prism. All products were comprehensively characterized by crystallographic and spectroscopic methods.
