Recent advances on the use of active anodes in environmental electrochemistry

Active anodes, especially those consisting of metal mixed oxides (MMOs) containing Ru and/or Ir oxides, have been applied in the treatment of wastewater, especially when chloride ions are present. Their characteristics continuously drive the study of applications of these materials, be they in the degradation of different organic molecules, the preparation of new electrode materials and in the association of various processes to increase pollutant removal. Thus, this brief review aims to present some of the recent advances in the application of active anode materials in environmental electrochemistry. Focussing on the 2018–2020 period, it is possible to note many applied studies, using commercially available materials, covering a wide range of target pollutants. Still other studies aim to modify the catalyst surfaces to increase the mineralization capacity, and the use of these anodes in the production of free chlorine species to mediate indirect organic reduction is observed.     

Arynic Condensation of Nitrile Anions in the Presence of the Complex Base NaNH2-CH3CH2(OCH2CH2)2ONa

Nitrite anions are easily condensed with aryl halides in the presence of the Complex Base NaNH₂-CH₃CH₂(OCH₂CH₂)₂ONa via the intermediate arynes.     

Alkoxyallene‐ynes: Selective Preparation of Bicyclo[5.3.0] Ring Systems Including a δ‐Alkoxy Cyclopentadienone

The development of an intramolecular rhodium(I)‐catalyzed Pauson–Khand reaction of alkoxyallene‐ynes with a proximal alkoxy group is reported. This reaction, in the presence of a [Rh(cycloocta‐1,5‐diene)Cl]₂/propane‐1,3‐diylbis(diphenylphosphane) system under a CO atmosphere, constitutes a powerful tool for selectively accessing carbo‐ and heterobicyclo[5.3.0] frameworks featuring an enol ether moiety. Through this procedure, a straightforward access to guaiane skeletons with a tertiary hydroxy group at the C10 position was achieved.     

LOBSTER: Local orbital projections,atomic charges,and chemical-bonding analysis from projector-augmented-wave-based density-functional theory

We present an update on recently developed methodology and functionality in the computer program Local Orbital Basis Suite Toward Electronic-Structure Reconstruction (LOBSTER) for chemical-bonding analysis in periodic systems. LOBSTER is based on an analytic projection from projector-augmented wave (PAW) density-functional theory (DFT) computations (Maintz et al., J. Comput. Chem. 2013 , 34, 2557), reconstructing chemical information in terms of local, auxiliary atomic orbitals and thereby opening the output of PAW-based DFT codes to chemical interpretation. We demonstrate how LOBSTER has been improved by taking into account time-reversal symmetry, thereby speeding up the DFT and LOBSTER calculations by a factor of 2. Over the recent years, the functionalities have also been continually expanded, including accurate projected densities of states (DOSs), crystal orbital Hamilton population (COHP) analysis, atomic and orbital charges, gross populations, and the recently introduced k -dependent COHP. The software is offered free-of-charge for non-commercial research.     

Preparation of a chiral azadiene for the synthesis of 5-aza analogues of angucyclinones

We have developed an efficient synthesis of both enantiomers of a key azadiene for the preparation of 5-aza analogues of angucyclinones through a hetero Diels-Alder reaction. These dienes were efficiently prepared via a 4-step procedure from known and readily available chiral diketoesters.     

From Pyranosuloses and Pyranosenuloses to Deoxy Hydroxyamino Sugars

Abstract

Deoxy hydroxyamino sugars represent a potentially useful series of sugar analogs owing mainly to the fact that they oxidize spontaneously to nitroxide free radicals to give spin-labeled sugar derivatives whose structure is very close to that of the parent sugar.₃ We describe herin two synthetic pathways towards these compounds, reduction of sugar oximes and conjugate addition to enolones derivatives, both in the pyranose series.     

Derivatives of 3-Deoxy-3-(N-Hydroxyamino)-D-Ribose

Abstract

A series of 3-(N-arylmethyl-N-hydroxyamino)-l,2-O-cyclopentylidene-3-deoxy-5-O-toluoyl-α-D-riboses has been prepared. The blocking groups used were chosen to allow an easy nucleosidation of these compounds to spin labelled analogs of natural nucleosides. The conformational behavior of the N-arylmethyl-N-hydroxyamino group has been studied using ³/_CH NMR coupling data and molecular mechanics computations. Upon spontaneous oxidation, these hydroxylamines led to the corresponding aminoxyl free radicals which were submitted to EPR spectroscopy and quantum mechanical computations at a semiempirical level (PM3).     

Iterative solving of variational inclusions under Wijsman perturbations

We prove that the metric regularity of set-valued mappings is stable under some Wijsman-type perturbations. Then, we solve a variational inclusion viewed as a limit-problem using assumptions on a sequence of associated problems. Finally, we apply our results to classical methods for solving variational inclusions.
