Characterisation of flavour compounds formed by γ-irradiation of polypropylene

Sterilisation of plastic packaging materials for food, pharmaceutical or cosmetic products with ⁶⁰Co γ-irradiation in the presence of oxygen can result in the formation of volatile substances. These may subsequently induce off-odours in these materials that might be regarded as negative by the consumers. Trace volatiles and odorous substances of polypropylene, irradiated with ⁶⁰Co γ rays at 10 and 20 kGy, respectively, were collected and analysed by gas chromatography–olfactometry (GC–O), GC–MS and GC–GC–MS. The methodology was successfully applied for identification of 29 characteristic odorants in a non-irradiated control sample and 38 odorants in γ-irradiated polypropylene samples. Selected odour-active compounds were quantified using GC–GC–MS in combination with stable isotope dilution assays. The quantitative data mirrors the compositional changes in volatile odorous substances from polypropylene during treatment with ionising γ rays in a ⁶⁰Co-irradiation plant.

Zum papierchromatographischen Verhalten einiger Abbauprodukte des Vitamins C

Zusammenfassung Die Abbauprodukte des Vitamins C, die 2,3-Diketo-L-gulonsäure und dis L-Threonsäure, wurden hergestellt und ihre Lösungen papierchromatographisch charakterisiert. Der in Chromatogrammen von Ascorbinsäure enthaltendem Material häufig auftretende Fleck mit dem R_f-Wert 0,11–0,14 ist als der 2,3-Diketo-L-gulonsäure zugehörig erkannt worden. Der R_f-Wert der als Vergleichssubstanz herangezogenen 2-Keto-L-gulonsäure beträgt 0,14–0,16, der ihrer Alkalisalze 0,10–0,12.     

Adsorption of nitrogen on granular activated carbon: experiment and modeling

A carbon adsorbent was produced and used to volumetrically measure nitrogen adsorption isotherms from 93 to 298 K and up to 7 MPa. The isosteric heat of adsorption was determined to range between -9.5 and -16 kJ/mol. The excess adsorption isotherms were modeled using an approach based on a modified Dubinin-Astakhov adsorption model, adapted for excess adsorption, which provided an accurate fit for all supercritical isotherms. An expression for the differential energy of adsorption as a function of pressure was developed using the Dubinin-Astakhov isotherm. The energy of adsorption for the isotherms measured was found to range from -8 to -15 kJ/mol as a function of pressure.
