The oxidation of 1-phenyl-2-thiourea (PTU) by chlorite was studied in aqueous acidic media. The reaction is extremely complex with reaction dynamics strongly influenced by the pH of reaction medium. In excess chlorite concentrations the reaction stoichiometry involves the complete desulfurization of PTU to yield a urea residue and sulfate: 2ClO2- + PhN(H)CSNH2 + H2O --> SO4(2-) + PhN(H)CONH2 + 2Cl- + 2H+. In excess PTU, mixtures of sulfinic and sulfonic acids are formed. The reaction was followed spectrophotometrically by observing the formation of chlorine dioxide which is formed from the reaction of the reactive intermediate HOCl and chlorite: 2ClO2- + HOCl + H+ --> 2ClO2(aq) + Cl- + H2O. The complexity of the ClO2- - PTU reaction arises from the fact that the reaction of ClO2 with PTU is slow enough to allow the accumulation of ClO2 in the presence of PTU. Hence the formation of ClO2 was observed to be oligooscillatory with transient formation of ClO2 even in conditions of excess oxidant. The reaction showed complex acid dependence with acid catalysis in pH conditions higher than pKa of HClO2 and acid retardation in pH conditions of less than 2.0. The rate of oxidation of PTU was given by -d[PTU]/dt = k1[ClO2-][PTU] + k2[HClO2][PTU] with the rate law: -d[PTU]/dt = [Cl(III)](T)[PTU]0/K(a1) + [H+] [k1K(a1) + k2[H+]]; where [Cl(III)]T is the sum of chlorite and chlorous acid and K(a1) is the acid dissociation constant for chlorous acid. The following bimolecular rate constants were evaluated; k1 = 31.5+/-2.3 M(-1) s(-1) and k2 = 114+/-7 M(-1) s(-1). The direct reaction of ClO2 with PTU was autocatalytic in low acid concentrations with a stoichiometric ratio of 8:5; 8ClO2 + 5PhN(H)CSNH2 + 9H2O --> 5SO4(2-) + 5PhN(H)CONH2 + 8Cl- + 18H+. The proposed mechanism implicates HOCl as a major intermediate whose autocatalytic production determined the observed global dynamics of the reaction. A comprehensive 29-reaction scheme is evoked to describe the complex reaction dynamics.  相似文献

The oxidation of trimethylthiourea (TMTU) by acidic bromate has been studied. The reaction mimics the dynamics observed in the oxidation of unsubstituted thiourea by bromate with an induction period before formation of bromine. The stoichiometry of the reaction was determined to be 4:3, thus 4BrO(3)- + 3R(1)R(2)C=S+ 3H(2)O --> 4Br- + 3R(1)R(2)C=O + 3SO(4)(2-) + 6H+. This substituted thiourea is oxidized at a much faster rate than the unsubstituted thiourea. The oxidation mechanism of TMTU involves initial oxidations through sulfenic and sulfinic acids. At the sulfinic acid stage, the major oxidation pathway is through the cleavage of the C-S bond to form a reducing sulfur leaving group, which is easily oxidized to sulfate. The minor pathway through the sulfonic acid produces a very stable intermediate that is oxidized only very slowly to urea and sulfate. The direct reaction of aqueous bromine with TMTU was faster than reactions that form bromine, with a bimolecular rate constant of (1.50 +/- 0.04) x 10(2) M(-1) s(-1). This rapid reaction ensured that no oligooscillatory bromine formation was observed. The oxidation of TMTU was modeled by a simple reaction scheme containing 20 reactions.  相似文献

Chemical waves are initiated in an excitable medium by resonance with local periodic forcing of the excitability. Experiments are carried out with a photosensitive Belousov-Zhabotinsky medium, in which the excitability is varied according to the intensity of the imposed illumination. Complex resonance patterns are exhibited as a function of the amplitude and frequency of the forcing. Local resonance-induced wave initiation transforms the medium globally from a quiescent excitable steady state to a periodic state of successive traveling waves.  相似文献

The microwave heating of two-dimensional slabs in a long rectangularwaveguide propagating the TE10 mode is examined. The temperaturedependency of the electrical conductivity and the thermal absorptivityis assumed to be governed by the Arrhenius law, while both theelectrical permittivity and the magnetic permeability are assumedconstant. The governing equations are the forced heat equationand the steady-state version of Maxwell's equation while theboundary conditions take into account both convective and radiativeheat loss. Approximate analytical solutions, valid for smallthermal absorptivity, are found for the temperature and theelectric-field amplitude using the Galerkin method. As the Arrheniuslaw is not amenable analytically, it is approximated by a rational-cubicfunction. At the steady state the temperature versus power relationshipis found to be multivalued; at the critical power level thermalrunaway occurs when the temperature jumps from the lower (cool)temperature branch to the upper (hot) temperature branch ofthe solution. In the steady-state limit the approximate analyticalsolutions are compared with the numerical solutions of the governingequations for various special cases. These are the limits ofsmall and large heat loss and an intermediate case involvingradiative heat loss. Results are also presented for a case wheredifferential cooling occurs on the different sides on the slab.An alternative heating scenario, where one end of the waveguideis blocked by a short, is also considered. The approximate solutionsare found for this geometry and compared in the small Biot-numberlimit to Kriegsmann (1997). Also, a control process is presented,which allows thermal runaway to be avoided and the desired finalsteady state to be reached. Various special cases of the feedbackparameters associated with the control process are examined.  相似文献

Montmorillonite was organically modified using an ammonium salt containing 4-acetylbiphenyl. This clay (BPNC16 clay) was used to prepare polystyrene (PS), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and high impact polystyrene (HIPS) nanocomposites. Polystyrene nanocomposites were prepared both by in situ bulk polymerisation and melt blending processes, while the ABS and HIPS nanocomposites were prepared only by melt blending. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy were used to confirm nanocomposite formation. Thermogravimetric analysis was used to evaluate thermal stability and the flammability properties were evaluated using cone calorimetry. By thermogravimetry, BPNC16 clay was found to show high thermal stability, and by cone calorimetry, a decrease in both the peak heat release rate and the mass loss rate was observed for the nanocomposites.  相似文献

In this paper pyridine and quinoline-containing salts were employed to modify montmorillonite. TGA analysis shows that the quinolinium modified clay has a higher thermal stability than the pyridinium modified clay. Polystyrene nanocomposites were prepared by in situ bulk polymerisation and direct melt blending using both clays. The X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy results show the formation of intercalated structures. The 50% degradation temperature of the nanocomposites is increased and so is the amount of char from TGA analysis compared to the virgin polymer. Cone calorimetric results indicate that clay reduces the peak heat release rate and average mass loss rate and thus lowers the flammability of the polymer.  相似文献

Background  

Knowledge of how synapses alter their efficiency of communication is central to the understanding of learning and memory. The most extensively studied forms of synaptic plasticity are long-term potentiation (LTP) and its counterpart long-term depression (LTD) of AMPA receptor-mediated synaptic transmission. In the CA1 region of the hippocampus, it has been shown that LTP often involves a rapid increase in the unitary conductance of AMPA receptor channels. However, LTP can also occur in the absence of any alteration in AMPA receptor unitary conductance. In the present study we have used whole-cell dendritic recording, failures analysis and non-stationary fluctuation analysis to investigate the mechanism of depotentiation of LTP.  相似文献

Over the past 10 years a number of new techniques have emerged that allow the manipulation of single DNA molecules and other biopolymers (RNA, proteins, etc.). These experiments have permitted the measurement of the DNA stretching and twisting elasticity and have consequently revealed the essential role played by the DNA mechanical properties in its interactions with proteins. We shall first describe the different methods used to stretch and twist single DNA molecules. We will then focus on its behaviour under torsion, especially by discussing the different methods used to estimate its torsional modulus.  相似文献

The novel process modeling tool PROMOT supports the object-oriented modeling of chemical processes for the simulation environment DIVA. In PROMOT, differential-algebraic process models can be built by aggregating structural and behavioral modeling entities that represent the topological structure or the dynamic and steady-state behavior, respectively, of the investigated chemical processes. Process models and their modeling entities may be defined either in an object-oriented modeling language or with a graphical user interface. This paper discusses the modeling concept, the modeling language, the knowledge representation aspects, and the implementation of PROMOT.  相似文献
