Formation of Supramolecular Nanostructures through in Situ Self-Assembly and Post-Assembly Modification of a Biocatalytically Constructed Dipeptide Hydrazide**

Aqueous self-assembly of short peptides has attracted growing attention for the construction of supramolecular materials for various bioapplications. Herein, we describe how the thermolysin-assisted biocatalytic construction of a dipeptide hydrazide from an N-protected amino acid and an amino acid hydrazide leads to the formation of thermally stable supramolecular hydrogels. In addition, we demonstrate the post-assembly modification of the supramolecular architectures constructed in situ tethering hydrazide groups as a chemical handle by means of fluorescence imaging.     

D3h‐Symmetric Porphyrin‐Based Rigid Macrocyclic Ligands for Multicofacial Multinuclear Complexes in a One‐Nanometer‐Sized Cavity

The one‐step synthesis of D_3h‐symmetric cyclic porphyrin trimers 1 composed of three 2,2′‐[4,4′‐bis(methoxycarbonyl)]bipyridyl moieties and three porphyrinatozinc moieties was achieved from a nickel‐mediated reductive coupling of meso‐5,15‐bis(6‐chloro‐4‐methoxycarbonylpyrid‐2‐yl)porphyrinatozinc. Although cyclic trimers 1 were obtained as a mixture that included other cyclic and acyclic porphyrin oligomers, an extremely specific separation was observed only for cyclic trimers 1 when using columns of silica gel modified with pyrenylethyl, cyanopropyl, and other groups. Structural analysis of cyclic trimers 1 was carried out by means of NMR spectroscopy and X‐ray crystallography. Treatment of an η³‐allylpalladium complex with a cyclic trimer gave a tris(palladium) complex containing three η³‐allylpalladium groups inside the space, which indicated that the bipyridyl moieties inside the ring could work as bidentate metalloligands.     

Proton conductivity of phosphoric acid derivative of fullerene

The proton conductive property of methano [60] fullerene diphosphoric acid has been investigated under various humidity conditions at the temperature range between 15 and 45 °C. It shows proton conductivity as high as 10⁻² S cm⁻¹ at 25 °C under relative humidity of 95%. Thermal analyses including TG–DTA and thermal desorption mass spectroscopy (TDS) confirm that the compound is thermally stable up to 200 °C. Proton conduction of the compound depends very much on humidity or water content. The logarithmic conductivity at 25 °C is increased linearly with increasing relative humidity. The activation energy (E_a) estimated from the slope of log(σT) vs. 1/T is decreased from 1.08 to 0.52 eV, as the relative humidity is increased from 40% to 75%. The humidity dependence of conductivity is discussed in the light of the observed hydration isotherm.     

A compact optical heterodyne interferometer by optical integration and its application

A compact high-resolution optical heterodyne interferometer combining a two-frequency light module and a minute optical system is described. The light module, which generates two independent frequencies of light, is fabricated by proton exchange method on LiNbO₃ substrate. We report an experiment evaluating measurement accuracy using a micro-displacement measurement system which incorporates this interferometer. Results of the experiment with a standard thickness sample show high thermal stability with maximum measurement error of 1.8 nm at a temperature from 19°C to 33°C. The system was used to measure the hysteresis of a piezoelectric element for displacements of several nm, thereby making it possible to analyze the system quantitatively in practice.     

Oxidation of alcohols with oxoperoxobis(N-phenylbenzohydroxamato)molybdenum(VI)

The title complex oxidizes primary and secondary alcohols to the corresponding carbonyl compounds. Stereoselective epoxidation of allylic alcohols is also described.     

Concentration and degradation of hyaluronic acid in knee synovial fluid from carrageenin-induced rabbit arthritis

The concentration and degradation of hyaluronic acid in the synovial fluid of carrageenin-induced arthritic joints of rabbits was studied. A 0.5-ml volume of 1% lambda-carrageenin was intra-articularly injected three times into a right knee joint, and saline into a left. After 5 d from the last injection, inflammatory changes were observed in the synovial membrane and synovial fluid, but not in the articular cartilage. In the inflammatory synovial fluid, lipid peroxide content, phosphatase activity and cell counts were significantly increased, but the copper concentration was not changed. Concentration of polymeric hyaluronic acid and total hyaluronic acid were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography using gel-permeation columns. Total hyaluronic acid was appreciably decreased in the inflammatory fluid. The polymeric hyaluronic acid determined was 38% of the total hyaluronic acid in the inflammatory fluid and 74% in the control fluid. This suggests that in the inflammatory fluid, molecular weights of hyaluronic acid are distributed in the broader range. The concentration of chondroitin sulphates was similar in both the inflammatory fluid and the control fluid, but the content ratio of chondroitin sulphates to hyaluronic acid was higher in the inflammatory fluid. In the inflamed synovial membrane, synthesis of hyaluronic acid as measured by incorporation of [14C]glucosamine into glycoconjugates was increased by about twice that in the control membrane.     

Organoaluminium reagents induced isomerization of 5-hydroxy-3,3,6-trimethyl-5-heptenoic acid δ-lactone to 2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclohexanedione

Treatment of the title lactone and the related δ or ε-lactones with Et₂AlSR (R = Et or Ph) gave 1,3-cyclohexanediones or 1,3-cycloheptanediones in excellent yields.     

Synthesis and thermal decomposition of lanthanide hexacyanochromate(iii) complexes,Ln[Cr(CN)6]·nH2O (Ln=La-Lu; n=3, 4)

New solid complex of nitrilotriacetic acid and bismuth trichloride was synthesized by a solid phase reaction of nitrilotriacetic acid and bismuth trichloride at room temperature. The composition of the sample is BiCl₃[N(CH₂COOH)₃]_2.5. The crystal structure of the complex belongs to triclinic system with the lattice parameters: α=0.7849 nm, β=0.9821 nm, χ=2.0021 nm, α=96.50°, β=98.76° and γ=90.49°. The far-infrared spectra show the bonding between the Bi ion and N atom of nitrilotriacetic acid. The thermal analysis also demonstrates the complex formation between the bismuth ion and nitrilotriacetic acid. The gaseous pyrolysis product and the final residue in the thermal decomposition process are determined to check the thermal decomposition reaction. Preparation and reaction of 2-aryl-3-silyl-1,3-butadiene

[reaction: see text] A conjugated pi-electron compound, 2-aryl-3-silyl-1,3-butadiene, was easily prepared from 1-benzyloxy-3-silyl-2-propyne, bis(iodozincio)methane, and an aryl halide in the presence of nickel catalyst. A subsequent cross-coupling reaction of the product with another aryl halide gave an unsymmetrical 2,3-diaryl-1,3-butadiene efficiently.
