Two-phase damage detection of beam structures under moving load using multi-scale wavelet signal processing and wavelet finite element model

This paper proposes a damage detection method with two phases, namely, localization and quantification, for beam structures subjected to moving load and successfully validates it via a laboratory experiment. Firstly, the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is applied to decompose the displacement response change induced by a moving vehicle and locate potential structural damages. Then adaptive-scale wavelet finite element model (WFEM) updating is employed to estimate the damage severity in the identified damage regions in a progressive fashion. The elemental scales of WFEM are adaptively changed according to not only the moving vehicle position but also the progressively identified damage regions. Such a method can effectively minimize the number of modeling degree-of-freedoms (DOFs) and updating parameters during optimization. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method is examined through a laboratory experiment with different damage scenarios. The results indicate the proposed method can achieve good consistency between structural modeling, damage scenarios, and load conditions, as well as an optimal tradeoff between damage detection accuracy and efficiency.

Stress memory polymers

Like shape memory polymers, a novel phenomenon of stress memory was shown in which the stress of a material can respond to an external stimulus. This concept was further enlightened by a switch‐spring‐frame model that would eliminate the limitation of existing models which overlooked the stimulus responsive nature of such polymers. The discovery being reported in this article was stemmed from a real case study into shape memory polymer fibers in compression stocking for varicose veins. The breakthrough of stress memory enabled researchers to develop applications needing stimuli‐responsive forces, which can broaden the horizon of such smart polymers in emerging smart products in many multidisciplinary fields such as sensors, stress garments, and massage devices, electronic skins, and artificial muscles. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Interface effect between blue phosphorus and metals

The contacted properties of metal substrates with single layer (monolayer) blue phosphorus are calculated by first principles. We analyze the charge transfer, atomic orbital overlap, electronic properties and potential barrier at the interface of metal contacted blue phosphorene (BuleP) to understand how to effectively inject electrons from the metal into the contacted blue phosphorus. We inquire into interfacial effect of blue phosphorene directly in contact with five representative metallic substrates – Au (111), Ag(111), Al(111), Co(111) and Sc(0001), which are having minimal lattice mismatch with the BlueP. We find that the contact properties of these five metals are ohmic contact and schottky contact. Of the five different contact metals, Co-BlueP heterojunction has the best electrical conductivity. The lower SBH in the Al contact can also lead to a good substrate for a Schottky contact for the heterojunction. These results can provide guidance for the future design of BlueP-based electronic devices and for the exploration of new low-dimensional semiconductor transport processes.     

Ligand Control of Palladium-Catalyzed Site-Selective α- and γ-Arylation of α,β-Unsaturated Ketones with (Hetero)aryl Halides

This study describes the first palladium-catalyzed, site-selective α- and γ-arylation of α,β-unsaturated ketones with (hetero)aryl halides. A wide range of hetero(aryl)halides coupled with α,β-unsaturated ketones, and transformation into the arylated products proceeded with excellent to good yields. The site selectivity of the reaction is switchable by simply changing the phosphine ligand to access either α-arylated or γ-arylated products in good to excellent yields by using a low catalyst loading, and the method demonstrates good functional-group compatibility.
