The behavior of proteins and polypeptides at electrified aqueous–organic interfaces is of benefit in label‐free detection strategies. In this work, rat amylin (or islet amyloid polypeptide) was studied at the interface formed between aqueous liquid and gelled organic phases. Amylin is a polypeptide that is co‐secreted with insulin from islet beta‐cells and is implicated in fibril formation. In this study, rat amylin was used, which does not undergo aggregation. The polypeptide underwent an interfacial transfer process, from water to the gelled organic phase, under applied potential stimulation. Cyclic voltammetry revealed steady‐state forward and peak‐shaped reverse voltammograms, which were consistent with diffusion‐controlled water‐to‐organic transfer and thin‐film stripping or desorptive back‐transfer. The diffusion‐controlled forward current was greater when amylin was present in an acidic aqueous phase than when it was present in an aqueous phase at physiological pH; this reflects the greater charge on the polypeptide under acidic conditions. The amylin transfer current was concentration dependent over the range 2–10 μM , at both acidic and physiological pH. At physiological pH, amylin was selectively detected in the presence of a protein mixture, which illustrated the bioanalytical possibilities for this electrochemical behavior.  相似文献

We present an overview of the recent progress on the phase transition in the block copolymer (BCP) films in terms of the interfacial interactions effects of the substrates and the χ (Flory-Huggins segmental interaction parameter) effects between the two blocks. For the BCP films thinner than a critical thickness (Lc) above which the transition is independent of film thickness, the order-to-disorder transition (ODT) increased or decreased with decreasing film thickness depending on the interfacial interaction types. The rapid and slow changes in the ODT were attributed to the relative magnitude of enthalpic contribution to χ between two blocks. Interestingly, a periodic amplification in the block composition for the BCP films suppressed the compositional fluctuation in the film geometry, resulting in the ODT shifts from the bulk ODTs above Lc. This effect of the BCP films was more illustrated by the ODT shift effects depending on the strength of the preferential interactions on the substrates. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Structural properties of YBa2Cu3O7‐δ/PrBa2Cu3O7‐δ heterointerfaces have been investigated by aberration‐corrected electron microscopy. Experimental evidence shows that c‐axis‐oriented YBa2Cu3O7‐δ/PrBa2Cu3O7‐δ heterostructures with atomically sharp interface epitaxially grow on SrTiO3(001) substrates. In terms of the contrast analysis, no apparent interdiffusion between YBa2Cu3O7‐δ and PrBa2Cu3O7‐δ occurs at the interface. In addition, stand‐off misfit dislocations and planar faults appear within PrBa2Cu3O7‐δ layer near the interface. Both misfit dislocations and interfacial dislocations resulting from the termination of planar faults contribute to misfit relaxation at the YBa2Cu3O7‐δ/PrBa2Cu3O7‐δ interface. Two hydrophilic conjugated polymers, PmP‐NOH and PmP36F‐NOH, with polar diethanol­amine on the side chains and main chain structures of poly(meta‐phenylene) and poly(meta‐phenylene‐alt‐3,6‐fluorene), respectively, are successfully synthesized. The films of PmP‐NOH and PmP36F‐NOH show absorption edges at 340 and 343 nm, respectively. The calculated optical bandgaps of the two polymers are 3.65 and 3.62 eV, respectively, the largest ones so far reported for hydrophilic conjugated polymers. PmP‐NOH and PmP36F‐NOH also possess deep‐lying highest occupied molecular orbital levels of −6.19 and −6.15 eV, respectively. Inserting PmP‐NOH and PmP36F‐NOH as a cathode interlayer in inverted polymer solar cells with a PTB7/PC71BM blend as the active layer, high power conversion efficiencies of 8.58% and 8.33%, respectively, are achieved, demonstrating that the two hydrophilic polymers are excellent interlayers for efficient inverted polymer solar cells.

Most of the commonly used microgels (MGs) are hydrophilic and tend to form oil-in-water emulsions. In this review, we discuss the function of MGs at the droplet interface in order to stabilize water-in-oil (w/o) emulsions. This topic addresses both interesting questions in fundamental research and a significant impact for applications, where the w/o emulsion type is of essential importance. Promising approaches to stabilize w/o emulsions with MGs are highlighted from different perspectives, ranging from novel MG modifications to assisted co-stabilization by adding soft or hard particles. We summarize the accumulated knowledge, evaluate the challenges and solutions, and highlight future research trends.  相似文献

Amphiphilic aroma molecules, representatives of fragrance molecules, are introduced as dynamic volatile surfactants. Surface tension of their aqueous solutions proves to be a sensitive and revealing quantity, used for assessment of the adsorption-evaporation behavior both under equilibrium conditions and in regimes of no instantaneous equilibrium. Such volatile amphiphiles are characterized by fast adsorption from bulk solution at an air-water interface, on a timescale of tens of microseconds, and exhibit synergetic effect in mixtures with conventional micellar-forming surfactants. Their ability to evaporate from the interface on a time scale of minutes suggests their applications as “temporal” dynamic cosurfactants in technologies involving fast formation of new surfaces. Current challenges concern evaluation of specific material parameters of volatile aroma surfactants in order to enable their selection for targeted applications.  相似文献

Porphyrins are large organic molecules that are interesting for different applications, such as photovoltaic cells, gas sensors, or in catalysis. For many of these applications, the interactions between adsorbed molecules and surfaces play a crucial role. Studies of porphyrins on surfaces typically fall into one of two groups: (1) evaporation onto well-defined single-crystal surfaces under well-controlled ultrahigh vacuum conditions or (2) more application-oriented wet chemical deposition onto less well-defined high surface area surfaces under ambient conditions. In this study, we will investigate the wet chemical deposition of 5-(monocarboxyphenyl)-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin (MCTPP) on well-defined rutile TiO2(110) single crystals under ambient conditions. Prior to deposition, the TiO2(110) crystals were also cleaned wet-chemically under ambient conditions, meaning none of the preparation steps were done in ultrahigh vacuum. However, after each preparation step, the surfaces were characterized in ultrahigh vacuum with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and the result was compared with porphyrin layers prepared in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) by evaporation. The differences of both preparations when exposed to zinc ion solutions will also be discussed.  相似文献

The influence of cholesterol on the structure of unilamellar-vesicle (ULV) phospholipid bilayers is studied using small-angle neutron scattering. ULVs made up of short-, mid- and long-chain monounsaturated phospholipids (diCn :1PC, n = 14 , 18, 22, respectively) are examined over a range (0-45mol %) of cholesterol concentrations. Cholesterol's effect on bilayer structure is characterized through changes to the lipid's transmembrane thickness, lateral area and headgroup hydration. For all three lipids, analysis of the experimental data shows that the addition of cholesterol results in a monotonic increase of these parameters. In the case of the short- and mid-chain lipids, this is an expected result, however, such a finding was unexpected for the long-chain lipid. This implies that cholesterol has a pronounced effect on the lipid's hydrocarbon chain organization.  相似文献

In this work, hydrogen plasma etching of surface oxides was successfully accomplished on thin (~100 µm) planar n‐type Czochralski silicon wafers prior to intrinsic hydrogenated amorphous silicon [a‐Si:H(i)] deposition for heterojunction solar cells, using an industrial inductively coupled plasma‐enhanced chemical vapour deposition (ICPECVD) platform. The plasma etching process is intended as a dry alternative to the conventional wet‐chemical hydrofluoric acid (HF) dip for solar cell processing. After symmetrical deposition of an a‐Si:H(i) passivation layer, high effective carrier lifetimes of up to 3.7 ms are obtained, which are equivalent to effective surface recombination velocities of 1.3 cm s–1 and an implied open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of 741 mV. The passivation quality is excellent and comparable to other high quality a‐Si:H(i) passivation. High‐resolution transmission electron microscopy shows evidence of plasma‐silicon interactions and a sub‐nanometre interfacial layer. Using electron energy‐loss spectroscopy, this layer is further investigated and confirmed to be hydrogenated suboxide layers. (© 2015 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH &Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献
