EFFECTS OF SOURCE PROPERTIES ON CUTOFF FREQUENCY f_(max)

The cutoff frequency f_(max) of radiation from earthquakes is one of the important parameters for studying the source process. By theoretical analysis and numerical experiments on acceleration Fourier spectrum it is suggested that f_(max) mainly depends on the lower values of slip rise time. This result can be used to explain the observational fact that the greater the earthquake magnitude, the smaller the value of f_(max).     

THE COMPARISON OF LANZHOU LOESS PROFILE WITH VOSTOK ICE CORE IN ANTARCTICA OVER THE LAST GLACIATION CYCLE

Loess near Lanzhou in the late Pleistocene is very sensitive to climatic fluctuations. The Beiyuan terrace profile in Linxia City, of which the curve of susceptibility tallies with the trend of isotopic curves of Vostok 2083 m ice core in Antarctica, is 35m thick. There are five layers of paleosols under Malan loess(L_1). Upper three layers (S_(1-a),S(1-b)and S_(1-c) correspond to three warm stages in last interglaciation, Interstadial of Last Glacial (C stage in Antarctic ice core)was clearly recorded in the Beiyuan profile, in which three layers of paleosols and two of loess were formed. The lowest section of the profile belongs to penultimate glaciation, in which fossils of cold-drought-resistant mammal and mollusc have been discovered.     

ISOLATION,CHARACTERIZATION AND EXPRESSION OF THE COMPLEMENTARY DNA FOR HUMAN TUMOR NECROSIS FACTOR (TNF-α)

A cDNA for human TNF-α (615bp) was isolated by means of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using first strand cDNA from PMA-induced HL-60 cells as template. The result from sequencing the 615 bp cDNA fragment indicated that it corresponded to the entire sequence of mature human TNF coding region. Direct expression of mature human TNF was achieved using a plasmid pHT-1 constructed by ligation of the cDNA and a synthetic DNA. The IPTG-induced bacterial product (hTNF) showed cytotoxicity to mouse L-929 cells. The TNF activity was further identified by neutralization of a specific monoclonal antibody against human TNF-α. Approximately 80,000 units of activity were detected per ml of culture at A600=2.     

THE ESTABLISHMENT OF TWO SETS OF ALIEN ADDITION LINES OF WHEATWHEATGRASS

The procedure and method for the transfer of two sets of 14 pairs of wheatgrass (Agropyron interrnedium) chromosomes into common wheat to establish two sets of wheat-wheatgrass alien addition lines are reported. Meanwhile, observations and analyses have been made on the phenotypicaI characters of all the 14 alien addition lines established. It is determined that wheatgrass chromosomes in some of the established addition lines carry the rustresistant genes. In addition, questions concerning the location and distribution of certain agriculturally important genes of wheatgrass chromosomes have been discussed.     

NATURAL GAS OF NEW GENETIC TYPE——BIO-, THERMO-CATALYTIC TRANSITIONAL ZONE GAS

Bio-, thermo-catalytic transitional zone gas (BTCTZ gas), of which burial depth is shallow (1000-2500m), chemical composition (C,/ΣC1-5 = 0.7-0.9) and isotopic composition (δ13C1= -55 to-48‰) coincide with the evolution level of organic matter (R0=0.25-0.6%) in the corresponding strata, is a natural gas of new genetic type. The genesis of BTCTZ gas must have some relation to microcatalysis under lower temperature and condensation of aromatic hydrocarbons. In line with the new theory of natural gas formation, the existence of BTCTZ gas is objective. According to data from all over the world, BTCTZ gas may hold an important position in the table of reserves of natural gas.     

SOLUBILITIES OF POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS AND DI-REGION THEORY

By using the relationship equation of Partition coefficients with water solubilities for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), we have estimated the solubilities of PAHs. In addition the high-performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) method has been used for the indirect determination of solubilities of PAHs. t3ased on the di-region theory, We have studied the relationship of the solubilities of PAHs with carcinogenicity and introduced the solubility parameter into the di-region theory equation. The calculated carcinogenicity of PAHs from the obtained equation shows little difference from that calculated from Dai Qianhuan's equation.     

ALTERATION IN CHROMATIN CONFORMATION OF PROLIFERATING AND DIFFERENTIATING ENZYME GENES IN NORMAL MOUSE LIVER AND ASCITES HEPATOMA CELLS AND ITS RELATION TO THE GENE EXPRESSION OF ENZYMES

Nuclei from the normal mouse liver were partially digested with micrococcal nuclease, followed by DNA extraction, agarose gel clectrophoresis and dot blot hybridization with ~(32)P-labeled cDNA probes of CPS_1 and ACT complex, It was clearly shown that the CPS_1 genes were distributed on the monomer, dimer. and trimer of nucleosomes, while the genes coding for ACT complex were distributed on the condensed oligonucleosomes. An opposite manner of distribution of CPS_1 and ACT complex genes was, however, noted in the case of ascites hepatoma cells, in which the specific activity of ACT was 13 times higher than that in the normal liver, while that of CPS_1 was remarkably reduced. Similar patterns of change in mRNA level of CPS_1 and ACT complex were observed in the normal mouse liver and ascites hepatoma cells, indicating a close relationship between chromatin structure and gene expression of these enzymes.     

CLONING, EXPRESSION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF Pro3 GENE OF YEAST Saccharomyces cerevisiae

The proline biosynthetic pathway and Pro genes in Saccharomyces cerevisiae have just begun to be studied recently. In our laboratory, Pro2 gene of S. cerevisiae had been cloned in yeast. As described in this paper, yeast Pro3 gene was also cloned, which can complement yeast Pro3 mutants, and be expressed efficiently in E. coli. The high activities of this gene product, L-pyrroline-5-carboxylate (P5C) reductase, can be detected in both organisms. The activity of the Pro3 gene product in multiple copy plasmids is not higher than that of single copy genes in chromosomes in both yeast and E. coll. The preliminary characterization of the gene is also reported.     

DYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF MAIN SOUNDER IN BLACK CICADA (C. atrata Fabricius)~*

In this paper, the dynamic properties of the main sounder (the sounding muscle (SMc) and the sounding membrane (SM)) and the generating mechanism of amplitude-modulation pulse train (AMPT) are given. The acting process of SMc is a quasi-simple harmonic contraction vibration. The amplitudes of soundless and sounding contracting motion are about 17.2 /μm and 29.4/μm, respectively, and the efficiency of dynamic sounding is about 17％, The unsounded motion of SM is a quasi-simple harmonic vibration, and the amplitude is about 7.81/μm. The sounding motion of SM is a complex vibration, and the amplitude is about 12.66 μm. In each syllable of the song, AMPT_(1,2,3) are separately produced by driving vibrations (V_1,2,3)) of three long ribs in the upper half of SM, and the peaks of V_(1,2,3) lead the first pulse of high amplitude in AMPT_(1,2,3) by 0.156 ms, respectively. The membrane structure in the lower half of SM is mainly to transmit contracting movement of SMc.     

KINETICS OF IRREVERSIBLE MODIFICATION OF ENZYME ACTIVITY IN A SYSTEM OF COUPLED ENZYME ASSAY (Ⅱ)——BOTH PRIMARY AND AUXILIARY ENZYMES MODIFIED BY REAGENT Y

Following the previous paperr, we examined the kinetics of the irreversible modification of enzyme activity in coupled assay when the modifier reacted with both primary and auxiliary enzymes. It was shown that Tsou's kinetic method can also be used in the present situation in some conditions.
