Moufang sets of mixed type F4

Moufang sets were introduced by Jacques Tits in order to understand isotropic linear algebraic groups of relative rank one, but the notion is more general. We describe a new class of Moufang sets, arising from so‐called mixed groups of type ${\mathsf{F}}_4$ in characteristic 2, obtained as the fixed point set under a suitable involution.     

Algebraic properties and the finite rank problem for Toeplitz operators on the Segal-Bargmann space

We study three different problems in the area of Toeplitz operators on the Segal-Bargmann space in Cn. Extending results obtained previously by the first author and Y.L. Lee, and by the second author, we first determine the commutant of a given Toeplitz operator with a radial symbol belonging to the class Sym_>0(Cn) of symbols having certain growth at infinity. We then provide explicit examples of zero-products of non-trivial Toeplitz operators. These examples show the essential difference between Toeplitz operators on the Segal-Bargmann space and on the Bergman space over the unit ball. Finally, we discuss the “finite rank problem”. We show that there are no non-trivial rank one Toeplitz operators Tf for f∈Sym_>0(Cn). In all these problems, the growth at infinity of the symbols plays a crucial role.     

On definability of types of finite Cantor‐Bendixson rank

Robust multigrid preconditioners for the high‐contrast biharmonic plate equation

We study the high‐contrast biharmonic plate equation with Hsieh–Clough–Tocher discretization. We construct a preconditioner that is robust with respect to contrast size and mesh size simultaneously based on the preconditioner proposed by Aksoylu et al. (Comput. Vis. Sci. 2008; 11 :319–331). By extending the devised singular perturbation analysis from linear finite element discretization to the above discretization, we prove and numerically demonstrate the robustness of the preconditioner. Therefore, we accomplish a desirable preconditioning design goal by using the same family of preconditioners to solve the elliptic family of PDEs with varying discretizations. We also present a strategy on how to generalize the proposed preconditioner to cover high‐contrast elliptic PDEs of order 2k, k>2. Moreover, we prove a fundamental qualitative property of the solution to the high‐contrast biharmonic plate equation. Namely, the solution over the highly bending island becomes a linear polynomial asymptotically. The effectiveness of our preconditioner is largely due to the integration of this qualitative understanding of the underlying PDE into its construction. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Group Hotelling's T^2 Test for Comparing Multiple Endpoints

Comparisons between two samples with multiple endpoints are often encountered in many real applications and Hotelling's T^2 test (HT) may suffer from loss of efficiency when multivariate normality assumption is violated. To overcome this issue, we propose a group Hotelling's T^2 test (GHT) where HT is conducted within each group after inverse normal transformation and then use the maximum value among combined statistics based on $p$-values at the group-level. Extensive simulations show that GHT is more robust than HT and some other existing procedures. Finally, the applications to plasma-renin activity in serum study and the ageing human brain further demonstrate the performance of GHT.     

Test Sets in Free Metabelian Lie Algebras

We calculate the test rank of a finite rank free metabelian Lie algebra over an arbitrary field and characterize the test sets for these algebras. We prove that each automorphism that is the identity modulo the derived subalgebra and that acts as the identity on some test set is an inner automorphism.
