We present a model describing the surface changes of an elastic preconstrained material which is valid for large deformations. The surface profile is described by a parametric curve that allows the emergence of infinite tangents and back return point as the surface evolves. The proposed model covers a number of classic models: Spencer (1994), Yang (1993), Kassner (1994), Chiu (1994). The bi-potential method has been successfully applied for the modeling of frictional contact problems in static cases. This paper presents the application of this method for dynamic analysis of impact problems with multiple deformable bodies. A first order algorithm is applied for numerical integration of the time-discretized equation of motion. We investigate three-dimensional cylinder wakes of incompressible fully developed flows at Re=300, resulting from control induced by tangential motions of the cylinder surface. The motion of the cylinder surface, in two dimensions, is optimized using evolution strategies, resulting in significant drag reduction and drastic modification of the wake as compared to the uncontrolled flow. The quasi-optimal velocity profile obtained in 2D is modified by spanwise harmonics and applied to 3D flows. A high-order implementation of the Discontinuous Galerkin (dg) method is presented for solving the three-dimensional Linearized Euler Equations on an unstructured hexahedral grid. The method is based on a quadrature free implementation and the high-order accuracy is obtained by employing higher-degree polynomials as basis functions. The present implementation is up to fourth-order accurate in space. For the time discretization a four-stage Runge–Kutta scheme is used which is fourth-order accurate. Non-reflecting boundary conditions are implemented at the boundaries of the computational domain.The method is verified for the case of the convection of a 1D compact acoustic disturbance. The numerical results show that the rate of convergence of the method is of order p+1 in the mesh size, with p the order of the basis functions. Two approaches are proposed for the modelling of problems with small geometrical defects. The first approach is based on the theory of self adjoint extensions of differential operators. In the second approach function spaces with separated asymptotics and point asymptotic conditions are introduced, and the variational formulation is established. For both approaches the accuracy estimates are derived. Finally, the spectral problems are considered and the error estimates for eigenvalues are given. The instability and the features of vortex sheet evolution are studied. We consider the self-organization of localized vortices (in two-dimensional flows) into clusters-like and spiral-like structures and show that quasi-final states do not ‘forget’ conditions of their initial origin. Direct numerical simulations associated with mixing in constant-density round coaxial jets are performed. They are validated by comparison against laboratory experiments. The mixing process is studied by seeding a passive tracer first in the outer annular jet, then in the inner jet. We demonstrate the important role played by coherent vortices in the mixing mechanisms. The turbulent mixing exhibits an intermittent character as a consequence of fluid ejections caused by the counter-rotating streamwise vortices. Forced convection heat transfer in fully developed flows of viscous dissipating fluids in concentric annular ducts is analyzed analytically. Special attention has been paid to the effect of the viscous dissipation. Two different cases of the thermal boundary conditions are considered: uniform heat flux at the outer wall and adiabatic inner wall (Case A) and uniform heat flux at the inner wall and adiabatic outer wall (Case B). Solutions for the velocity and temperature distributions and the Nusselt number are obtained for different values of the aspect ratio and the Brinkman number. The present analytical results for the case without the viscous dissipation effect are compared with those available in the literature and an excellent agreement is observed. To cite this article: M. Within the context of turbojet engine re-ignition after in-flight extinction, a thermo-diffusive model has been developed to describe the electrical ignition, at low pressure and low temperature, of a cluster of fuel droplets. The model involves the resolution of the conservation equations of mass, species and energy. It also takes into account the various physical and chemical phenomena occurring during the ignition process.
