Global existence and nonexistence for degenerate parabolic systems

The initial-boundary value problems are considered for the strongly coupled degenerate parabolic system

in the cylinder , where is bounded and are positive constants. We are concerned with the global existence and nonexistence of the positive solutions. Denote by the first Dirichlet eigenvalue for the Laplacian on . We prove that there exists a global solution iff .

     

Transient Nutation EPR Spectroscopy of Condensed Media (Review)

The application of transient nutations in EPR spectroscopy of condensed media is considered. The main methods of formation and observation of transient nutations are presented. The laws governing this phenomenon in twolevel and multilevel spin systems and also in inhomogeneous broadening of EPR lines are described. Recent advances in the use of transient nutations to separate overlapping spectra, identify quantum numbers and quantum transitions, investigate the kinetics of photoinduced paramagnetic centers, and determine relaxation times for a wide range of crystalline and disordered media are presented.     

Theoretical Investigation of Transparent (3–5 μm) and High Reflective (1.3 μm) Filter by Sol-Gel Process

When designing a cut-off interference filter, extra layers are needed to add on each side of periodic symmetrical multilayer to match the incident medium and the substrate. In this paper, we use sol-gel film with adjustable refractive index as the match layer. The influence of the refractive index and thickness of the match layer on the film system is discussed in detail. As an example, a special filter which is transparent (>80%) at the wavelength 3–5 m and high reflective (>90%) at the wavelength 1.3 m is designed. Finally a series of optimized film parameters are presented. The whole design process is a good reference to the other multilayer special filter made by sol-gel process.     

Lower Bounds for n-Term Approximations of Plane Convex Sets and Related Topics

In this paper, we establish lower bounds for n-term approximations in the metric of L ²⁽I ² ) of characteristic functions of plane convex subsets of the square I ² with respect to arbitrary orthogonal systems. It is shown that, as n, these bounds cannot decrease more rapidly than .     

Far infrared sub-nanosecond pulse generation in GaP with a time-synchronized mode-locked double-frequency Nd: Glass laser system

Light pulses of 149 m wavelength and 700 ps duration are generated by non-collinear phase-matched difference frequency mixing of laser pulses at 1053.5 and 1061 nm in a (110) cut GaP crystal. The pump laser pulses are generated in a time-synchronized mode-locked double-frequency Nd:glass laser system consisting of a silicate glass branch and a phosphate glass branch. A photon conversion efficiency of 4 × 10^–6 is achieved. The non-linear susceptibility constant of GaP is determined to be d ₁₄ = (10 ± 1) pm V^–1.     

q-Painlevé Systems Arising from q-KP Hierarchy

A system of q-Painlevé type equations with multi-time variables t ₁,...,t _M is obtained as a similarity reduction of the N-reduced q-KP hierarchy. This system has affine Weyl group symmetry of type . Its rational solutions are constructed in terms of q-Schur functions.

Etude du Systeme Ternaire H2O-Al(NO3)3-Mg(NO3)2 I - Isothermes 15, 25, 30, 40 et 50°C

The solid-liquid equilibria of the ternary system H₂ O-Al(NO₃ )₃ -Mg(NO₃ )₂ were studied at 15, 25, 30, 40 and 50°C by using a synthetic method which allows to determine all the characteristic points of isothermal sections. In all isotherms the liquidus exhibit two curves corresponding to the saturation in Mg(NO₃ )₂ ⋅6H₂ O and Al(NO₃ )₃ ⋅9H₂ O. Neither double salts nor mixed crystals are observed in the temperature and composition field studied. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Recent advances on thermoelectric materials

By converting waste heat into electricity through the thermoelectric power of solids without producing greenhouse gas emissions, thermoelectric generators could be an important part of the solution to today’s energy challenge. There has been a resurgence in the search for new materials for advanced thermoelectric energy conversion applications. In this paper, we will review recent efforts on improving thermoelectric efficiency. Particularly, several novel proof-of-principle approaches such as phonon disorder in phonon-glass-electron crystals, low dimensionality in nanostructured materials and charge-spin-orbital degeneracy in strongly correlated systems on thermoelectric performance will be discussed.
