Isolation of essential oils from tobacco by gas co-distillation/solvent extraction

Summary The essential oils have been isolated from tobacco leaves using a simple gas co-distillation apparatus. The method involves co-distillation with water under the continuous stream of an inert gas with subsequent single solvent extraction of the distillate. The extract is analysed on GC and GC/MS in splitless injection mode without further concentration. The method was evaluated for reproducibility using n-octadecane as an internal standard. The distillation-extraction procedure was reporducible with an average deviation of ±3% for the major constituents. The present method was applied to the analyses of the essential oils of other agricultural products.Dedicated to Dr. L. S. Ettre on the occasion of his 60th birthday.

Analysis of Essential Oil from the Needles of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Pinus pinaster</Emphasis> Growing in Algeria

The needle oil of the Algerian maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Ait.) growing in natural habitats in Sidi Feradj (Algiers region) was obtained by hydrodistillation in 0.3% yield and analyzed by GC and GC/MS. More than 46 compounds amounting to 65.2% of the total oil were identified. The main components were β-caryophyllene (26.6%), allo-aromadendrene (12.5%), and α-humulene (4.3%). __________ Published in Kimiya Prirodnikh Soedinenii, No. 5, pp. 445–447, September–October, 2005.     

西洋参中挥发油化学成分的分析

利用气相色谱－质谱－计算机联用装置分析吉林栽培西洋参挥发油中的化学成分及相对含量。由于没有按照常规的乙醚提取，而紧 ８０％的甲醇提取，因此得到的挥发油成分及含量与文献报道有很大的差别，共鉴定出２３种化合物，其中醌类及酸类约占总挥发油含量的６５％，为该部分挥发油的主要成分。     

Characterization of Lippia sidoides oil extract-b-cyclodextrin complexes using combined thermoanalytical techniques

Thermoanalytical techniques, being rapid and un-expensive have been used for the investigation of the cyclodextrin inclusion complexes for three decades. The conventional thermoanalytical techniques (TG and DTA/DSC) follow the thermal properties of the uncomplexed compounds. Consequently, the inclusion complex formation as well as the liberation of the entrapped guest cannot be followed. Monitoring the products of the thermal fragmentation of parent cyclodextrin and the included molecule(s), applying TG-MS combined technique provides evidence concerning the inclusion complex formation, and besides, gives selective signal to follow the decomposition of the cyclodextrin inclusion complexes. b-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes of Thymol and Lippia sidoides Cham essential oil extract have been prepared and investigated using conventional and combined (TG-MS) thermoanalytical techniques. The evolved gas analysis proved the inclusion complex formation between the host and guests. By the evaluation of the experimental results the elaboration of the entrapped guests from the cyclodextrin cavity could be followed. 回顾了顶空采样气相色谱分析法在复杂基质中挥发性成分中的应用．总结并详述了顶空分析的三种重要模式-介绍了顶空分析的相关原理和整个顶空分析系统的参数优化过程．综述了顶空．气相色谱分析在生物样本中挥发性有机物的测定、药品中有机残留溶剂的检测、聚合材料中挥发性有机物的分析、环境中有害的有机挥发性物质分析、挥发油分析和烟草分析等方面的进展．     

Chemical Constituents of the Essential Oil of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Nepeta oxyodonta</Emphasis>

Water-distilled essential oil from the aerial parts of Nepeta oxyodonta Boiss. was analyzed by GC/MS for the first time. Fifty-eight components were identified. The major components were (E)-caryophyllene (12.6%), spathulenol (8.5%), β-bourbonene (8.1%), germacrene-D (7.4%), α-cadinol (7.3%), germacrene-D-4-ol (6.8%), T-cadinol (5.6%), and caryophyllene oxide (5.3%).__________Published in Khimiya Prirodnykh Soedinenii, No. 2, pp. 141–142, March–April, 2005.     

Chemical Composition of the Essential Oil of Rosmarinus officinalis Cultivated in the Algerian Sahara

The volatile compounds obtained by hydrodistillation of the aerial parts of Rosmarinus officinalis cultivated at the Algerian Sahara were analyzed by GC/MS. Thirty compounds were characterized representing 98.2% of the essential oil with 1,8-cineole (29.5%), 2-ethyl-4,5-dimethylphenol (12.0%) and camphor (11.5%) as the major components.     

Essential Oil and Antimicrobial Evaluation of the Pistacia eurycarpa

The compositions of microdistilled and hydrodistilled essential oils of the mastix ofPistacia eurycarpaYalt. (Anacardiaceae) were compared. The essential oils were analyzed by GC/MS:- andbeta;-pinenes were found as the major constituents. The antimicrobial activity of the hydrodistilled oil was determined due to the ethnomedical uses of the oleo-gum resin on skin diseases.     

GC/MS法分析油松节挥发油化学成分

用气相色谱-质谱法对山东昆嵛山产油松节挥发油进行化学成分的分析。采用水蒸气蒸馏法从油松节中提取挥发油。采用不同类型的毛细管柱进行分析，找出最佳分析条件，用归一化法测定其含量，并用气相色谱-质谱法对化学成分进行鉴定。共鉴定了48个成分，占挥发油总成分的84％以上。结果表明，此方法稳定可靠，重现性好，适用于中药挥发油的化学成分分析。
