Equivalence of the Abraham momentum and the Minkowski momentum of photons in media

The century-long debate on the momentum of light in a medium involves two rival forms of momentum, namely those of Abraham and Minkowksi. In this Letter, we analyze this dilemma from the view of the quantum theory of light, the result of which can be easily extended to the classical level. It is found that the Abraham momentum of one polariton mode in linear and dispersive dielectrics differs from its Minkowski momentum, by a considerable factor. However, after taking all branches into consideration, we find the two lead to the same end, which unifies the two rival forms of momentum. The sum rule is traditional, but our conclusion provides a new perspective on the Abraham-Minkowski dilemma, and is consistent with existing experiments including a recent measurement of recoil momentum of atoms using an atom interferometer with Bose-Einstein Condensates [G. K. Campbell et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 170403 (2005).], the Cerenkov effect, the Doppler effect and the phase matching conditions in nonlinear optical processes.     

Orbital angular momentum crosstalk of single photons propagation in a slant non-Kolmogorov turbulence channel

We analyze the orbital angular momentum (OAM) crosstalk of single photons propagation through low-order atmospheric turbulence. The probability models of the orbital angular momentum crosstalk for single photons propagation in the channel with the non-Kolmogorov turbulence tilt, coma, and astigmatism and defocus aberration have been established. It is found, for α = 11/3, that the turbulent tilt is the dominant aberration which causes the orbital angular momentum crosstalk, the coma is second and the astigmatism is third, but the defocus aberration has no impact on OAM. The results also indicate that the regularities of orbital angular momentum crosstalk caused by the tilt, the coma and the astigmatism are almost the same, respectively. The crosstalk probability of the orbital angular momentum increases as the azimuth mode index p of Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beam increases, the turbulent strength C_n² enhances, the orbital angular momentum quantum number rises, the diameter of circular sampling aperture D and the channel zenith angle θ increase.     

Theoretical study on the Rocksalt structured positron annihilation in magnesium oxide

Based on the atomic superposition approximation （ATSUP） and first-principles pseudopotential plane-wave methods, the bulk and Mg mono-vacancy positron lifetime of magnesium oxide were calculated using Arponen-Pajamme and Borofiski-Nieminen positron-annihilation-rate interpolation formula respectively. The calculated values are in good agreement with experimental values and the first-principles method gives more convincing results. The positron annihilation density spectra analysis reveals that positrons mainly annihilate with valence electrons of oxygen atoms when the magnesium-vacancy appears within magnesium oxide.

分层流体中移动动量源生成准二维偶极子涡街特性实验

采用水平移动射流方法模拟移动动量源,实验研究了该移动动量源在密度分层流体中生成准二维偶极子涡街的机理,分析了偶极子涡街的演化特性. 在系列实验基础上,获得了移动动量源在密度分层流体中能够演化为偶极子涡街的(Re,Fr)组合条件. 对不同的Re取值,获得了偶极子涡街无因次形成时间及其无因次涡街平均波长倒数与Fr之间的相关关系,表明它们不依赖于Re数,而与Fr近似为幂指数关系. 关键词： 分层流体 移动动量源 偶极子涡街 涡街形成时间

Ablation yield and angular distribution of ablated particles from laser-irradiated metals: The most fundamental determining factor

Five metals (Zn, Cu, Ni, Ti, and Mo) were irradiated with 150 shots of a Q-switched Nd:YAG pulsed laser in a vacuum of 10⁻³ torr. The ions projected out of the laser-produced plasma (LPP) plume were detected by CR-39 detectors positioned at −15°, 0°, 30°, 60°, and 90° with respect to the target-surface normal at a distance of 5 cm from the target in each case. The angular distribution of LPP ions, which is characterized by the exponent n of cosⁿ θ distribution, is given by n = 2.5-11 for the five target metals. The value of the exponent n has no systematic correlation with the square-root of atomic mass of the target metals but exhibits systematic dependence on the room temperature Debye-Waller's thermal parameter B or the mean-square amplitude of atomic vibrations 〈u²〉. Likewise, the ablation yield (atoms/shot) of the twelve target metals investigated by Thestrup et al. (2002) [8] under identical irradiation conditions is a function of the room temperature B-factor or 〈u²〉.     

Step-shape angular spin distribution in layered systems by Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy: A general treatment

In the so-called ‘step-shape’ angular spin distribution model for layered systems, the non-collinear directions of the atomic magnetic moments are confined to the film plane and form a homogeneous fan spanning inside an (in-plane) angular interval Δφ centered at an angle φ₀. A general approach for deriving the two parameters φ₀ and Δφ via ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy measurements is discussed. The analysis extends our previously reported treatment, which assumed that the angular aperture Δφ develops symmetrically versus a fixed direction φ₀ (e.g., the in-plane easy axis of magnetization) oriented either along or perpendicular to the in-plane projection of the Mössbauer γ-ray direction. The proposed approach is also applicable for those cases when not only the spin aperture Δφ is changing but also the aperture center φ₀ is rotating under the influence of different external parameters, such as applied field, temperature, stress, etc. The method is suitable for applications to nanoscale layered heterostructures with in-plane uniaxial or unidirectional magnetic anisotropy. The method is applied to experimental data obtained on a 2-nm thick defected Fe layer with in-plane magnetic texture.     

Superfluidity with and without a condensate in two and three dimensions

The recent study of He and You [P.-S. He and W.-L. You, Int. J. Mod. Phys. B26, 1250107 (2012)] on the relation between superfluid and condensate densities in a two-dimensional weakly interacting Boson system assumed a δ(x???x′) interaction between two particles at sites x and x′. The main purpose of this article is to point out the sensitivity of the conclusions of He and You to the choice of interaction. Thus, it is known for logarithmic interactions that one can have superfluidity without a condensate. Finally, some related ideas are mentioned in relation to superfluidity in liquid ⁴ He at exceedingly low temperatures.     

Anti-AIDS agents 83. Efficient microwave-assisted one-pot preparation of angular 2,2-dimethyl-2H-chromone containing compounds

A novel and efficient microwave-assisted one-pot reaction was developed to synthesize angular 2,2-dimethyl-2H-chromone-containing compounds, which is the first and key step in the synthesis of potent DCK and DCP anti-HIV agents. The newly developed microwave synthesis conditions dramatically shortened the reaction time from 2 days to 4 h with improved yields.
