Forced Convection with Slip-flow in a Channel or Duct Occupied by a Hyper-porous Medium Saturated by a Rarefied Gas

An analytic solution is obtained for forced convection flow in a parallel-plates channel or a circular duct occupied by a hyper-porous medium saturated with a rarefied gas in the slip-flow regime, for the case of uniform flux boundary conditions. As expected, it is found that velocity slip leads in general to increased heat transfer and temperature slip leads to reduced heat transfer.

Computational study of shock wave focusing in a log-spiral duct

The mechanism of shock wave focusing in a two-dimensional log-spiral duct has been investigated here numerically using a finite volume method. This approach is based on a MUSCL TVD scheme with flux-vector splitting applied to the Euler equations. The isopycnics determined from the calculations are compared with the experimental results obtained by use of holographic interferometric photography and are found to be in excellent qualitative agreement with the experiments. The computational results clarify the details of the wave interactions very near to the focus. In particular, phenomena such as the formation of secondary shock waves prior to the implosion, their interaction with the reflected shock and the formation of vortices after the implosion have been examined.

Integration of an Equilibrium System in an Enhanced Theory of Bending of Elastic Plates

The complete integral of the system of partial differential equations governing the equilibrium bending of elastic plates with transverse shear deformation and transverse normal strain is constructed by means of complex variable methods. The process helps to elucidate the physical meaning of certain analytic constraints imposed on the asymptotic behavior of the solutions and shows that in the case of an infinite plate, any analytic solution has finite energy if and only if the bending and twisting moments, the transverse shear force, the displacements in vertical planes, and two other characteristic quantities vanish at infinity. An example is discussed to illustrate the theory.

采用Reddy高阶剪切板理论，考虑材料物性参数随坐标和温度变化的特性，研究在均匀变化的温度场内功能梯度材料矩形板在面内与横向载荷共同作用下的横向弯曲问题，基于一维DQ法和Galerkin技术，给出了一对边固支，另对边任意约束时板弯曲问题的半解析解，以Si3N4/SUS304板为例考察了材料组份，温度场，面内载荷及边界约束条件等对功能梯度材料板弯曲行为的影响。     

A review of MEMS-based microscale and nanoscale tensile and bending testing

Thin films at the micrometer and submicrometer scales exhibit mechanical properties that are different than those of bulk polycrystals. Industrial application of these materials requires accurate mechanical characterization. Also, a fundamental understanding of the deformation processes at smaller length scales is required to exploit the size and interface effects to develop new and technologically attractive materials. Specimen fabrication, small-scale force and displacement generation, and high resolution in the measurements are generic challenges in microscale and nanoscale mechanical testing. In this paper, we review small-scale materials testing techniques with special focus on the application of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Small size and high force and displacement resolution make MEMS suitable for small-scale mechanical testing. We discuss the development of tensile and bending testing techniques using MEMS, along with the experimental results on nanoscale aluminum specimens.     

An experimental technique for measuringtransient natural/forced convective heatfluxes in a vertical channel

A series of systematic experiments for measuring transient natural andforced convected heat fluxes in a one-sided heated vertical channel have beenconducted. The total heat input in transient natural and forced experiments iscomposed of four kinds modes: radiative heat loss, conductiveheat lossm, thermal capacity of the plate, and convective heat transfer in thetest channel. In the transient periods, the generalized correlations for estimatingtransient convective heat flux are proposed in natural and forced convectionexperiments. By using the proposed q_c^″ distributions, satisfactory agreementsare achieved between the transient Nu_x predictions and experimentaldata.
