A chemiluminescence method for the determination of folic acid by the sodium hypochlorite–folic acid–semicarbazide hydrochloride system with a new flow injection technique has been established. The new method can perform simple, sensitive and rapid determinations of folic acid. The response to the concentration of folic acid, in the range of 1.0×10−75.0×10−5 g/ml, is linear. The relative standard deviation of the method is 2.3% (Cs=4.0×10−6 g/ml, n=11). The detection limit is 2.7×10−8 g/ml. This method is suitable for automatic and continuous analysis, and has been successfully tested for the determination of folic acid in a folic acid tablet.

A new shipboard analytical method for determining picomolar levels of manganese in seawater has been developed. The method is based on a combination of chelating resin column extraction and improved chemiluminescence (CL) detection in a closed flow system. In this method, manganese in sample solution is selectively collected on newly-developed iminodiacetate-immobilized chelating resin, and then eluted with acidic solution containing hydrogen peroxide. The resulting eluent is mixed with luminol solution and aqueous ammonia after removal of iron ions by a chelating resin column, and then the mixture is introduced into the CL cell. The manganese concentration is obtained from the CL intensity. The detection limit (3SD) of manganese is 5 pmol L–1 from 9 mL of seawater sample. The method was applied to seawater samples collected at the Okinawa Trough.

A three-layer poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)/glass microfluidic system for performing on-chip solid-phase enzymatic reaction and chemiluminescence (CL) reaction was used for the determination of glucose as a model analyte. A novel method for the immobilization of controlled-pore-glass based reactive particles on PDMS microreactor beds was developed, producing an on-chip solid-phase reactor that featured large reactive surface and low flow impedance. Efficient mixing of reagent/sample/carrier streams was achieved by incorporating chaotic mixer structures in the microfluidic channels. A conventional sequential injection (SI) system was adapted for direct coupling with the microfluidic system, and combined with hydrostatic delivery of reagents to achieve efficient and reproducible sample introduction at 10 μl levels. A detection limit of 10 μM glucose (3σ), and a precision of 3.1% RSD (n=7, 0.2 mM glucose) were obtained using the SI-microfluidic-CL system integrated with a glucose oxidase (GOD) reactor. Carryover was <5% at a throughput of 20 samples/h.

An improved capillary electrophoresis indirect chemiluminescence system was employed for the determination of chlorogenic acid and rutin in cigarette samples. After being separated by capillary electrophoresis, the analyte zones were determined by indirect chemiluminescence of luminol-potassium hexacyanoferrate. In this system, luminol was added into running buffer solution and introduced at the head of separation capillary, and potassium hexacyanoferrate was introduced at the end of the capillary. A high potential buffer reservoir was constructed from a running buffer cell and an electrode buffer one, which were jointed with a frit, in order to avoid luminol electrolysis in high potential reservoir and the excursion of chemiluminescence baseline. A low potential flow reservoir was used to prevent electrode buffer solution from the contamination of chemiluminescence waste. Therefore, the proposed capillary electrophoresis-chemiluminescence system can avoid the electrolysis of chemiluminescence reagent, retain the stability of chemiluminescence baseline and prolong the working time of running and electrode buffer solutions. In addition, the matrix of cigarette sample solutions has also an inhibitory effect on the chemiluminescence intensity in the indirect detection, whereas the influence was not observed in the separation of standard solutions. After the correction of matrix inhibition and the calibration with standard addition method, chlorogenic acid and rutin were determined in four cigarette samples by the improved capillary electrophoresis-chemiluminescence system.

A novel and sensitive chemiluminescence (CL) method for the determination of aminomethylbenzoic acid and aminophylline coupled with flow-injection analysis (FIA) technique is developed in this paper. It is based on the inhibition effect of the studied drugs on the chemiluminescence emission of N-bromosuccinimide-luminol (NBS-luminol) system. Under the optimum conditions, the decreased CL intensity is linear with the concentration of aminomethylbenzoic acid in the range of 2×10−8 to 1.0×10−6 g ml−1 and with the concentration of aminophylline in the range of 1×10−7 to 7.0×10−6 g ml−1, respectively. The detection limit is 7.0×10−9 g ml−1 for aminomethylbenzoic acid (3σ) and 3.4×10−8 g ml−1 for aminophylline (3σ). The relative standard deviations (R.S.D.) for 11 parallel measurements of 2.0×10−7 g ml−1 aminomethylbenzoic acid and 1.0×10−6 g ml−1 aminophylline are 2.6 and 3.0%, respectively. The proposed methods have been applied for the determination of the studied drugs in their pharmaceutical formulations with satisfactory results. The possible use of the proposed system for the determination of aminomethylbenzoic acid in plasma sample was also tested. The possible inhibition mechanism of aminomethylbenzoic acid and aminophylline on luminol-NBS system was discussed briefly.

A simple flow-based procedure with chemiluminescence (CL) detection is proposed for bromide ion determination in seawater. The procedure was based on the oxidation of bromide to bromine by chloramine-T followed by the reaction of bromine with luminol resulting in CL emission. Since no significant reaction within chloramine-T and luminol was observed, the detection was carried out without bromine extraction from the oxidant medium. The proposed flow system had a sampling rate of 40 determinations per hour, reagents consumption of 100 μg luminol and 60 μg chloramine-T per determination, a limit of detection of 0.5 mg l−1 bromide ions, a linear concentration range (r = 0.999 and n = 7) between 0 and 100 mg l−1, and a coefficient of variance better than 2.5% (for 10 measurements of a 10 mg l−1 Br solution) were achieved. The analytical system was applied for the determination of bromide in seawater and estuarine-water samples, obtaining an analyte recovery ranging from 94 to 102% and comparing the results with a reference spectrophotometric method no significant difference was observed in 95% confidence level.

In this work a simple, fast, sensitive and selective flow-based procedure for the chemiluminometric determination of carvedilol, a recent non-cardioselective β-blocker with noteworthy antioxidant activity, is proposed. The developed methodology takes advantage of the antioxidant capacity of carvedilol to inhibit the chemiluminescence response resulting from the oxidation of luminol by hypochlorite, by acting as a hypochlorite scavenger. The analytical process was implemented in a multi-pumping flow system that employs multiple solenoid actuated micro-pumps as the only active components. These acted as solution insertion, propelling and commuting units assuring an easily controlled, low cost, compact and reliable analytical system.A linear working range for carvedilol concentrations ranging from 1.2 × 10−7 to 3.0 × 10−6 mol l−1 (r > 0.999, n = 6), was obtained, with a detection limit of 8.7 × 10−9 mol l−1. The system handles about 65 samples per hour yielding precise results (R.S.D. < 1.3%, n = 10). Recoveries within 95 and 104% were obtained.

Summary A series of N-acetyl--arylglycines (IIa,IIb) was prepared by acid-induced electrophilic -amidoalkylation reactions; compounds of typeIIb were transformed into the corresponding 3-acetylaminobenzo[b]furan-2(3H)ones (III) by treatment with acetic anhydride. It was found that most of these new compounds (lactones as well as open chain derivatives) undergo base induced oxidation in the presence of oxygen with the emission of visible light. Preliminary structure-activity relationships for these novel chemiluminescence class are proposed.

The chemiluminescence of the classical lucigenin light reaction is adversely affected by nicotine in didodecyldimethylammonium bromide bilayer lamelar aggregates. The ratio of chemiluminescence quantum yields in the oriented medium, with and without nicotine, is equal to e–0.571[Nicotine] whereas in the homogenous medium, the same ratio is equal to e–0.214[Nicotine]. Furthermore, the appearance of the primary emitter's (N-methylacridone) emission in the chemiluminescence spectrum, already observed in oriented systems, is strongly supressed by nicotine.

A new chemiluminescence (CL) method for the selective determination of As(III) and As(V) ions in aqueous solution has been studied using a FIA system. The method is based on the increased CL intensity with the addition of As(V) ion into a solution of lucigenin and hydrogen peroxide. The addition of As(III) ion into the solution did not change the CL intensity. Total concentration of As ions was determined after pre-oxidation of As(III) to As(V) with hydrogen peroxide in basic solution. The As(III) content was estimated by subtracting the content of As(V) ion from total As concentration. The effects of concentrations of KOH and H2O2, and flow rates of reagents on CL intensity have been investigated. The calibration curve for As(V) ion was linear over the range from 1.0×10-2 to 10 μg/g, the coefficient of correlation was 0.997 and the detection limit was 5.0×10-3 μg/g under the optimal experimental conditions.
