Twining Poly(polyoxometalate) Chains into Nanoropes

Organic polymers and inorganic clusters belong to two different disciplines and have completely different properties and structures. When a cluster is attached to the backbone of a polymer as a pendant, the resultant hybrid polymers (polyclusters) exhibit unique behaviours totally different from those of conventional polymers owing to the nanoscale size of the cluster and its particular interactions. Herein, the aggregation of a poly(polyoxometalate)—a polynorbornene backbone with inorganic polyoxometalate cluster pendants—upon addition of a non-solvent to its dilute solution is reported. A three-dimensional network of tangled and snake-like nanothreads was observed. Direct visualisation of individual nanoscale clusters enabled identification of single chains within the nanothreads. These observations suggest that during the process of aggregation, the hybrid polymer forms curved or extended chains as a consequence of an armouring effect in which the collapsed cluster pendants wrap around the backbone. The collapse occurs because they become less soluble in the solvent/non-solvent mixture. The extended chains then become entwined and form nanoropes consisting of multiple chains wound around each other. This study provides a deeper understanding of the nature of polyclusters and should also prove useful for their future development and application.     

<Emphasis Type="Italic">FCC/BCC</Emphasis> competition and enhancement of saturation magnetization in nanocrystalline Co-Ni-Fe films

The structure, chemical composition, and magnetic properties of electrochemically deposited nanocrystalline Co-Ni-Fe films were investigated using a number of techniques. A high saturation magnetic induction up to B _s = 21 kG was attained. An enhancement of the saturation magnetization compared to the ideal anticipated one was revealed, which correlated with the nonlinear behavior of the structural phase composition and lattice parameters with the change of the composition. 光束发散度对紫外写入光纤光栅的影响

用傅里叶衍射光学分析了准分子激光束发散度对于光纤光栅制备的影响，发现光束发散角使光纤光栅的布拉格波长发生改变，相位版后干涉场沿光纤轴向和径向不均匀，对制备30dB高反射率光纤光栅造成困难。实验结果与理论分析基本一致，相对于理想平行光束情况，会聚光束使得光纤光栅布拉格波长出现在短波一边，发射光束使得光纤光栅布拉格波长出现在长波一边。     

Boundedness of commutators on homogeneous Herz spaces

The boundedness on homogeneous Herz spaces is established for a large class of linear commutators generated by BMO(R ⁿ ) functions and linear operators of rough kernels which include the Calderón-Zygmund operators and the Ricci-Stein oRfiUatory singular integrals with rough kernels. Comparison of stimulated-emission-pumping fluorescence dip spectrometry and conventional fluorescence spectrometry in application to supersonic jet spectrometry

Summary A supersonic jet spectrum of 9,10-dichloroanthracene is measured by stimulated-emission-pumping fluorescence dip spectrometry and conventional fluorescence spectrometry. The performance obtained is compared for these spectrometric methods, providing same information concerned with the energy level of the ground state. The former is more preferential for measurement of a high-resolution spectrum, since the spectral resolution is determined by the linewidth of the dumping laser. On the other hand, the latter is more preferential for measurement with better sensitivity at the expense of the spectral resolution, since the fluorescence throughput can be improved by increasing the slit width of the monochromator.Dedicated to Professor Dr. Wilhelm Fresenius on the occasion of his 80th birthday     

Forecasting call frequency at a financial services call centre

A forecasting model is developed for the number of daily applications for loans at a financial services telephone call centre. The purpose of the forecasts and the associated prediction intervals is to provide effective staffing policies within the call centre. The model building process is constrained by the availability of only 2 years and 7 months of data. The distinctive feature of the data is that demand is driven in the main by advertising. The analysis given focuses on applications stimulated by press advertising. Unlike previous analyses of broadly similar data, where ARIMA models were used, a model with a dynamic level, multiplicative calendar effects and a multiplicative advertising response is developed and shown to be effective.     

Recursive partition and amalgamation with the exponential family: Theory and applications

The theory of tree-growing (RECPAM approach) is developed for outcome variables which are distributed as the canonical exponential family. The general RECPAM approach (consisting of three steps: recursive partition, pruning and amalgamation), is reviewed. This is seen as constructing a partition with maximal information content about a parameter to be predicted, followed by simplification by the elimination of ‘negligible’ information. The measure of information is defined for an exponential family outcome as a deviance difference, and appropriate modifications of pruning and amalgamation rules are discussed. It is further shown how the proposed approach makes it possible to develop tree-growing for situations usually treated by generalized linear models (GLIM). In particular, Poisson and logistic regression can be tree-structured. Moreover, censored survival data can be treated, as in GLIM, by observing a formal equivalence of the likelihood under random censoring and an appropriate Poisson model. Three examples are given of application to Poisson, binary and censored survival data.     

Issues in Managing Information Technology

This paper describes three case studies which investigated issues relating to the implementation and management of advanced information technology. The benefits derived from information technology were found to vary from one organization to another. These studies provide further evidence to support earlier research findings that senior management has an important role to play in the effective exploitation of information technology, and that the investment approach taken by an organization has a significant effect on the development of computer-based information systems. The effectiveness of a system depends not only on applying the appropriate technology, but also on how successfully technical and behavioural issues are resolved.     

Spontaneous magnetization of the Ising model on a 4–8 lattice

The spontaneous magnetization of the Ising model on a 4–8 lattice with six different coupling constants and two different magnetic moments is studied. A formula for the spontaneous magnetization is proposed. The result agrees with the exact low-temperature series expansions up to the 12th order.
