Oxo-tethered ruthenium(II) complex as a bifunctional catalyst for asymmetric transfer hydrogenation and H2 hydrogenation

Newly developed oxo-tethered Ru amido complexes (R,R)-1 and their HCl adducts (R,R)-2 exhibited excellent catalytic performance for both asymmetric transfer hydrogenation and the hydrogenation of ketonic substrates under neutral conditions without any cocatalysts to give chiral secondary alcohols with high levels of enantioselectivity.     

Phase behavior of binary mixtures composed of ethylene carbonate and various organic solvents

Phase behaviors of the binary mixtures composed of ethylene carbonate (EC) and aliphatic alcohols, ω-phenyl alcohols, and alkylbenzenes were investigated. In addition, heat of solution of EC into these organic solvents was measured. The EC/methanol and EC/ethanol systems gave homogeneous solution at the temperature above their liquidus lines, while the mixtures of EC and alcohols with longer alkyl chain showed a miscibility gap in a liquid phase and provided the monotectic-type phase diagram. The liquid–liquid phase separation region expanded with the increase in the alkyl chain length. A similar phase behavior was also observed for the mixtures of EC and alkylbenzenes. On the other hand, the EC mixtures with ω-phenyl alcohols showed no miscibility gap in a liquid phase at least up to 4-phenylbutan-1-ol which has C4 alkyl chain intervening between phenyl and hydroxyl groups. This result demonstrates that both of the hydroxyl and phenyl groups act to facilitate the mixing of aliphatic compounds with EC. The phase behavior of these EC mixtures was analyzed applying the modified regular solution model in which the pair interaction energy was regarded as free energy. The model calculation with the use of heat of solution of EC at infinite dilution as the pair interaction enthalpy reproduced well both of the experimentally obtained liquidus line and mutual solubility curve as well as monotectic point.     

Star-shaped pyrrole-fused tetrathiafulvalene oligomers: synthesis and redox, self-assembling, and conductive properties

A series of star-shaped pyrrole-fused tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) oligomers 1-3 was synthesized via an S(N)Ar reaction of fluorinated benzenes with the pyrrolyl sodium salts. Electrochemical and chemical oxidations of 1-3 revealed that a radical cation moiety on each TTF unit was successfully accumulated in all oligomers. Self-assembled structures of neutral and oxidized species were characterized by SEM and XRD, and their conductive properties of the iodine-doped 1-3 as well as an intermolecular mixed-valence ion radical salt were investigated.

High-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detection for determination of nobiletin content in the brain and serum of mice administrated the natural compound

We recently demonstrated that nobiletin, a citrus flavonoid, exhibits anti-dementia action in animals. However, no determination methods for the content of nobiletin with beneficial action in the brain of nobiletin-administered animals have been developed, nor has its pharmacokinetics been revealed completely. Here, we established the high-performance liquid chromatography/photodiode array detection method for nobiletin determination using Bond Elut C18 SPE cartridges for extraction, where the calibration curve was linear over 0.025-10 ng, with coefficient of variation of less than 6.76%. This method enabled us to determine pharmacokinetic parameters of nobiletin given intraperitoneally or per os in the brain of mice.     

Energy method in the partial Fourier space and application to stability problems in the half space

The energy method in the Fourier space is useful in deriving the decay estimates for problems in the whole space Rn. In this paper, we study half space problems in and develop the energy method in the partial Fourier space obtained by taking the Fourier transform with respect to the tangential variable x^′∈Rn−1. For the variable x₁∈R₊ in the normal direction, we use L² space or weighted L² space. We apply this energy method to the half space problem for damped wave equations with a nonlinear convection term and prove the asymptotic stability of planar stationary waves by showing a sharp convergence rate for t→∞. The result obtained in this paper is a refinement of the previous one in Ueda et al. (2008) [13].     

Invariant elliptic estimates

In this paper, we revisit elliptic estimates invariant under domain expansion. We improve the invariant elliptic estimates in the previous paper [Y. Cho, T. Ozawa, Y. Shim, Calc. Var. PDE 34 (2009) 321-339] via gradient estimate and discuss an application to the Lamé system.     

Design of chiral bis-phosphoric acid catalyst derived from (R)-3,3'-di(2-hydroxy-3-arylphenyl)binaphthol: catalytic enantioselective Diels-Alder reaction of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes with amidodienes

Chiral bis-phosphoric acid 1 was designed to identify a new class of structural features in chiral Br?nsted acid catalysts. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the single atropisomer 1, bearing S axial chirality at 3,3'-biaryl substituents on (R)-binaphthyl and intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the two phosphoric acid moieties. The newly designed bis-phosphoric acid 1 was evaluated in the Diels-Alder reaction of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes 4 with 1-N-acylamino-1,3-butadienes 3. After systematic variation of the catalyst substituents, as well as the N-acyl substituents of 1,3-butadiene, the use of an N-Cbz amidodiene 3a in the presence of bis-phosphoric acid 1e with a 2,4,6-tri-isopropylphenyl group was found to be optimal to yield the 1S,6R enantiomeric product 5aa in a Diels-Alder reaction of acrolein (4a). Application of this method to substituted substrates was found to be an efficient approach to the enantioselective synthesis of 3- and 3,6-substituted cyclic formylcarbamates 5. The specific character as well as the utility of 1e was further established by comparing its enantioselectivity, absolute stereochemistry, and catalytic efficiency with those of mono-phosphoric acid 2.     

Dioxygenases, key enzymes to determine the aglycon structures of fusicoccin and brassicicene, diterpene compounds produced by fungi

Fusicoccin A and cotylenin A are structurally related diterpene glucosides and show a phytohormone-like activity. However, only cotylenin A induces the differentiation of human myeloid leukemia cells. Since the cotylenin A producer lost its ability to proliferate during preservation, a study on the relationship between structure and activity was carried out and a modified fusicoccin A with hydroxyl group at the 3-position showed a similar biological activity with that of cotylenin A. We then searched for an enzyme source that catalyzes the introduction of a hydroxyl group into the 3-position and found that brassicicene C, which is structurally related to fusicoccin A with hydroxyl group at the 3-position, was produced by Alternaria brassicicola ATCC96836. We recently cloned a brassicicene C biosynthetic gene cluster including the genes encoding fusicocca-2,10(14)-diene synthase and two cytochrome P450s, which were responsible for the formation of fusicocca-2,10(14)-diene-8β,16-diol. In this study, we report that a α-ketoglutarate dependent dioxygenase, the gene coding for which was located in the cluster, catalyzed a hydroxylation at the 3-position of fusicocca-2,10(14)-diene-8β,16-diol. On the other hand, a α-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenase, which had been identified in a fusicoccin A biosynthetic gene cluster, catalyzed the 16-oxidation of fusicocca-2,10(14)-diene-8β,16-diol to yield an aldehyde (8β-hydroxyfusicocca-1,10(14)-dien-16-al), although both dioxygenases had 51% amino acid sequence identity. These findings suggested that the dioxygenases played critical roles for the formation of the fusicoccin A-type and cotylenin A-/brassicicene C-type aglycons. Moreover, we showed that short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase located in the fusicoccin A biosynthetic gene cluster catalyzed the reduction of the aldehyde to yield fusicocca-1,10(14)-diene-8β,16-diol.
