Summary A Summer School in Nuclear Chemistry sponsored by the U. S. Department of Energy and the American Chemical Society has been held at San José State University for the past 20 years. The intent of the program is to introduce outstanding college students to the field of nuclear and radiochemistry with the goal that some of these students will consider careers on nuclear science. The program features radiochemistry experiments along with radiation safety training, guest lectures by well known nuclear scientists and field trips to nuclear chemistry facilities in the San Francisco area.  相似文献

Nature's repertoire of biosynthetic transformations has recently been recognized to include the Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction. Evidence now exists that there are enzymes that mediate the Diels-Alder reaction in secondary metabolic biosynthetic pathways. 2002 marked the 100th anniversary of Alder's birth and 75 years since the discovery of the Diels-Alder reaction. It would appear that living systems discovered and made use of this ubiquitously useful ring-forming reaction eons ago for the construction of complex natural products. In this Review an overview is given of all of the known classes of natural products (polyketides, isoprenoids, phenylpropanoids, alkaloids) that have been speculated to arise by a biological Diels-Alder reaction.  相似文献

The fundamentals of the three-stage teaching of metrology at the Department of Chemistry of Irkutsk State University are considered. The course Mathematical Theory of Experiment in Chemistry, which consists of two parts, Mathematical Statistics in Chemistry and Mathematical Methods of Experiment Design, is delivered at the first stage. For fourth-year students, the courses Metrology of Analytical Control (a mandatory course for one specialization) and Algorithms for Determining Performance Characteristics in the Certification of Analytical Procedures (an optional course) are taught.  相似文献

Summary In the Department of Chemistry of the University of Hamburg a data processing system for automation of large analytical instruments is being installed at present. It consists of a central computer VARIAN V 73 and 5 satellites of the type VARIAN L-100 and NOVA 1200 respectively. In this article the deliberations upon which the configuration now being realized is based are shortly described. A detailed account is given of the status of installation and past experiences concerning the operation of large analytical instruments in combination with computers. On December 10, 1998, the 102nd anniversary of Alfred Nobels death, in Stockholms Konserthus (Concert Hall), Swedens King Carl XVI Gustav awarded one half of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Chemistry (3,800,000 kronor, about $489,000) to Professor John A. Pople, 73, of Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois for his development of computational methods in quantum chemistry.The remaining half of the prize, the ne plus ultra of chemistry, was awarded to Professor Walter Kohn, 75, of the University of California, Santa Barbara for his development of the density-functional theory [1–9]. Because of health problems in his family, Kohn was unable to attend the ceremony but presented his Nobel lecture in Stockholm on January 28, 1999. According to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences: The laureates have each made pioneering contributions in developing methods that can be used for theoretical studies of the properties of molecules and the chemical processes in which they are involved [7].  相似文献
