The heterogeneous chemistry and photochemistry of ozone on oxide components of mineral dust aerosol, including α-Fe(2)O(3), TiO(2), and α-Al(2)O(3), at different relative humidities have been investigated using an environmental aerosol chamber. The rate and extent of ozone decomposition on these oxide surfaces are found to be a function of the nature of the surface as well as the presence of light and relative humidity. Under dark and dry conditions, only α-Fe(2)O(3) exhibits catalytic decomposition toward ozone, whereas the reactivity of TiO(2) and α-Al(2)O(3) is rapidly quenched upon ozone exposure. However, upon irradiation, TiO(2) is active toward O(3) decomposition and α-Al(2)O(3) remains inactive. In the presence of relative humidity, ozone decay on α-Fe(2)O(3) subject to irradiation or under dark conditions is found to decrease. In contrast, ozone decomposition is enhanced for irradiated TiO(2) as relative humidity initially increases but then begins to decrease at higher relative humidity levels. A kinetic model was used to obtain heterogeneous reaction rates for different homogeneous and heterogeneous reaction pathways taking place in the environmental aerosol chamber. The atmospheric implications of these results are discussed.  相似文献

The heterogeneous chemistry of gas-phase acetic acid with CaCO(3)(calcite) aerosol was studied under varying conditions of relative humidity (RH) in an environmental reaction chamber. Infrared spectroscopy showed the loss of gas-phase reactant and the appearance of a gaseous product species, CO(2). The acetic acid is observed to adsorb onto the calcite aerosol through both a fast and a slow uptake channel. While the fast channel is relatively independent of RH, the slow channel exhibits enhanced uptake and reaction as the RH is increased. In additional experiments, the calcite aerosol was exposed to both nitric and acetic acids in the presence of water vapor. The rapid conversion of the particulate carbonate to nitrate and subsequent deliquescence significantly enhances the uptake and reaction of acetic acid. These results suggest a possible mechanism for observed correlations between particulate nitrate and organic acids in the atmosphere. Calcium rich mineral dust may be an important sink for simple organic acids.  相似文献

Mineral dust aerosol is known to provide a reactive surface in the troposphere for heterogeneous chemistry to occur. Certain components of mineral dust aerosol, such as semiconductor metal oxides, can act as chromophores that initiate chemical reactions, while adsorbed organic and inorganic species may also be photoactive. However, relatively little is known about the impact of heterogeneous photochemistry of mineral dust aerosol in the atmosphere. In this study, we investigate the heterogeneous photochemistry of trace atmospheric gases including HNO(3) and O(3) with components of mineral dust aerosol using an environmental aerosol chamber that incorporates a solar simulator. For reaction of HNO(3) with aluminum oxide, broadband irradiation initiates photoreactions to form gaseous NO and NO(2). A complex dynamic balance between surface adsorbed nitrate and gaseous nitrogen oxide products including NO and NO(2) is observed. For heterogeneous photoreactions of O(3), iron oxide shows catalytic decompositions toward O(3) while aluminum oxide is deactivated by ozone exposure. Furthermore, the role of relative humidity, and, thus, adsorbed water, on heterogeneous photochemistry has been explored. The atmospheric implications of these results are discussed.  相似文献

The heterogeneous chemistry of sulfur dioxide with CaCO(3) (calcite) aerosol as a function of relative humidity (RH) has been studied under isolated particle conditions in an atmospheric reaction chamber using infrared absorption spectroscopy. The reaction of SO(2) with calcite produced gas phase CO(2) as a product in addition to the conversion of the particulate carbonate to sulfite. The reaction extent was found to increase with elevated RH, as has been observed for the similar reaction with HNO(3), but much higher relative humidities were needed to significantly enhance the reaction. Mixed experiments in which calcite aerosol was exposed to both HNO(3) and SO(2) were also performed. The overall reaction extent at a given relative humidity did not appear to be increased by having both reactant gases present. The role of carbonate aerosol as an atmospheric sink for sulfur dioxide and particulate nitrogen and sulfur correlations are discussed.  相似文献

Adsorption of sulfur dioxide on hematite and goethite particle surfaces   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The adsorption of sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) on iron oxide particle surfaces at 296 K has been investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). A custom-designed XPS ultra-high vacuum chamber was coupled to an environmental reaction chamber so that the effects of adsorbed water and molecular oxygen on the reaction of SO(2) with iron oxide surfaces could be followed at atmospherically relevant pressures. In the absence of H(2)O and O(2), exposure of hematite (alpha-Fe(2)O(3)) and goethite (alpha-FeOOH) to SO(2) resulted predominantly in the formation of adsorbed sulfite (SO(3)(2-)), although evidence for adsorbed sulfate (SO(4)(2-)) was also found. At saturation, the coverage of adsorbed sulfur species was the same on both alpha-Fe(2)O(3) and alpha-FeOOH as determined from the S2p : Fe2p ratio. Equivalent saturation coverages and product ratios of sulfite to sulfate were observed on these oxide surfaces in the presence of water vapor at pressures between 6 and 18 Torr, corresponding to 28 to 85% relative humidity (RH), suggesting that water had no effect on the adsorption of SO(2). In contrast, molecular oxygen substantially influenced the interactions of SO(2) with iron oxide surfaces, albeit to a much larger extent on alpha-Fe(2)O(3) relative to alpha-FeOOH. For alpha-Fe(2)O(3), adsorption of SO(2) in the presence of molecular oxygen resulted in the quantitative formation of SO(4)(2-) with no detectable SO(3)(2-). Furthermore, molecular oxygen significantly enhanced the extent of SO(2) uptake on alpha-Fe(2)O(3), as indicated by the greater than two-fold increase in the S2p : Fe2p ratio. Although SO(2) uptake is still enhanced on alpha-Fe(2)O(3) in the presence of molecular oxygen and water, the enhancement factor decreases with increasing RH. In the case of alpha-FeOOH, there is an increase in the amount of SO(4)(2-) in the presence of molecular oxygen, however, the predominant surface species remained SO(3)(2-) and there is no enhancement in SO(2) uptake as measured by the S2p : Fe2p ratio. A mechanism involving molecular oxygen activation on oxygen vacancy sites is proposed as a possible explanation for the non-photochemical oxidation of sulfur dioxide on iron oxide surfaces. The concentration of these sites depends on the exact environmental conditions of RH.  相似文献

Little quantitative information exists regarding the products of the heterogeneous reaction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and ozone. We have, therefore, performed the first quantitative study investigating the kinetics and products of the heterogeneous gas-surface reaction of anthracene and ozone as a function of ozone concentration and relative humidity (RH). The reaction exhibited pseudo-first-order kinetics for anthracene loss under dry conditions (RH < 1%) and the pseudo-first-order rate coefficients displayed a Langmuir-Hinshelwood dependence on the gas-phase ozone concentration, which yielded the following fitting parameters: the equilibrium constant for ozone adsorption, K(O3) = (2.8 +/- 0.9) x 10(-15) cm3 and the maximum pseudo-first-order rate coefficient, k(I)max = (6.4 +/- 1.8) x 10(-3) s(-1). The kinetics were unchanged when experiments were performed at approximately 50% and 60% RH. In the product study, a nonlinear dependence, similar to a Langmuir adsorption plot, of the anthraquinone product yield as a function of ozone concentration was observed and resulted in the following fitting parameters: K(O3) = (3.4 +/- 1.5) x 10(-15) cm3 and the maximum anthraquinone yield, ANQmax % = 30 +/- 18%. Experiments performed under higher relative humidity conditions ( approximately 50% and 60% RH) revealed that the anthraquinone yield was unaffected by the presence of gas-phase water. It is noteworthy that both the anthracene loss kinetics and the anthraquinone yields have a similar dependence on the degree of ozone partitioning to the surface. This can be understood in terms of a mechanism whereby the rate-determining steps for anthracene loss and anthraquinone formation are both driven by the amounts of ozone adsorbed on the surface. Our results suggest that at atmospherically relevant ozone concentrations (100 ppb) the anthraquinone yield from the ozonolysis of anthracene under dry and high relative humidity conditions would be less than 1%.  相似文献

To probe how the aerosol substrate influences heterogeneous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) oxidation, we investigated the reaction of surface-bound anthracene with gas-phase ozone on phenylsiloxane oil and azelaic acid aerosols under dry conditions in an aerosol flow tube with offline analysis of anthracene. The reaction exhibited pseudo-first-order kinetics for anthracene loss, and the pseudo-first-order rate coefficients displayed a Langmuir-Hinshelwood dependence on the gas-phase ozone concentration on both aerosol substrates. The following parameters were found: for the reaction on phenylsiloxane oil aerosols, K(O3) = (1.0 +/- 0.4) x 10(-13) cm(3) and k(I)(max) = (0.010 +/- 0.003) s(-1); for the reaction on azelaic acid aerosols, K(O3) = (2.2 +/- 0.9) x 10(-15) cm(3) and k(I)(max) = (0.057 +/- 0.009) s(-1), where K(O3) is a parameter that describes the partitioning of ozone to the surface and k(I)(max) is the maximum pseudo-first-order rate coefficient at high ozone concentrations. The K(O3) value for the reaction of surface-bound anthracene and ozone on azelaic acid aerosols is similar to the K(O3) value that we obtained in our previous study for the reaction of surface-bound benzo[a]pyrene and ozone on the same substrate. This finding supports our earlier hypothesis that the substrate influences the partitioning of ozone to the surface irrespective of the organic species (i.e., PAH) adsorbed to it. Preliminary ab initio calculations were performed to investigate whether there is a relationship between the relative binding energies of the ozone-substrate complex and the K(O3) values for the different substrates studied. A comparison between kinetic results obtained on aerosol substrates and thin films is presented.  相似文献

The distributions of Pb(II) and As(V)O4(3-) ions in the interfacial region between thin poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) coatings and aalpha-A12O3(0001), alpha-Al2O3(1-102), and alpha-Fe2O3(0001) single-crystal substrates were studied using long-period X-ray standing wave fluorescent yield (XSW-FY) and X-ray reflectivity techniques. The PAA film serves as a simplified analogue of natural organic matter (NOM) coatings on mineral surfaces. Such coatings are often assumed to play an important role in the partitioning and speciation of trace heavy metals in soils and aquatic systems. On the alpha-Al2O3(1-102) surface, Pb(II) ions were found to preferentially bind to the PAA coating, even at sub-micromolar Pb(II) concentrations, and to partition increasingly onto the metal oxide surface as the Pb(II) concentration was increased ([Pb(II)] = 5 x 10(-8) to 2 x 10(-5) M, pH = 4.5; 0.01 M NaCl background electrolyte). This observation suggests that the binding sites in the PAA coating outcompete those on the alpha-Al2O3(1-102) surface for Pb(II) under these conditions. The As(V)O4(3-) oxoanion partitions preferentially to the L-Al2O3(1-102) surface for the As(V)O4(3-) concentrations examined (1 x 10(-7) to 5 x 10(-7) M, pH = 4.5; 0.01 M NaCl background electrolyte). Partitioning of Pb(II) (at 1 x 10(-7) M and pH 4.5) was also examined at PAA/alpha-Al2O3(0001), and PAA/alpha-Fe2O3(0001) interfaces using XSW-FY measurements. Our results show that the PAA coating was the dominant sink for Pb(II) in all three samples; however, the relative order of reactivity of these metal oxide surfaces with respect to Pb(II) sorption is alpha-Fe2O3(0001) > alpha-Al2O3(1-102) > alpha-Al2O3(0001). This order is consistent with that found in previous studies of the PAA-free surfaces. These XSW results strongly suggest that the characteristics of the organic film (i.e., binding affinity, type, and density of binding sites) as well as metal oxide substrate reactivity are key factors determining the distribution and speciation of Pb(II) and As(V)O4(3-) at organic film/metal oxide interfaces.  相似文献

Photosensitized heterogeneous chemistry of ozone on organic films   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The interactions of ozone with benzophenone and phenol solid films have been investigated under simulated atmospheric conditions with respect to relative humidity, pressure, temperature, and O3 concentration using a coated flow tube reactor. The steady-state reactive uptake coefficients (gammass) of ozone on benzophenone films ranged from below 10(-6) in dark conditions to approximately 4 x 10(-6) under UV-A irradiation and decreased with increasing O3 concentration in the range 28-320 ppbv. A similar trend was observed for the initial uptake coefficient (gammai) which varied from ca. 1.5 x 10(-6) in the dark to approximately 7 x 10(-6) under UV-A irradiation. The uptake coefficients under irradiation were strongly dependent on the relative humidity (from 5 to 70%), with their lowest values at high humidity (70% RH). The ozone uptakes for multilayer coverage turned out to be independent of the deposited mass of the organic compound. The benzophenone-phenol mixture also showed photoenhanced uptake with a larger steady-state uptake under visible irradiation, approximately 2.9 x 10(-6). Contact angle measurements showed an increase of the organic film hydrophobicity for the benzophenone-phenol mixture upon combined exposure to light and ozone. A linear dependence of the kinetic values on the photon flux has been demonstrated and when extrapolated to the solar spectral irradiance would lead to uptake coefficients of approximately 10(-5). UV-vis analysis and contact angle measurements of the organic film after irradiation and ozone exposure showed relevant changes only in the mixture, with an increase in the hydrophobic character of the film and the appearance of a new absorption band up to 450 nm.  相似文献

It is well-known that chlorine active species (e.g., Cl(2), ClONO(2), ClONO) can form from heterogeneous reactions between nitrogen oxides and hydrogen chloride on aerosol particle surfaces in the stratosphere. However, less is known about these reactions in the troposphere. In this study, a potential new heterogeneous pathway involving reaction of gaseous HCl and HNO(3) on aluminum oxide particle surfaces, a proxy for mineral dust in the troposphere, is proposed. We combine transmission Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to investigate changes in the composition of both gas-phase and surface-bound species during the reaction under different environmental conditions of relative humidity and simulated solar radiation. Exposure of surface nitrate-coated aluminum oxide particles, from prereaction with nitric acid, to gaseous HCl yields several gas-phase products, including ClNO, NO(2), and HNO(3), under dry (RH < 1%) conditions. Under humid more conditions (RH > 20%), NO and N(2)O are the only gas products observed. The experimental data suggest that, in the presence of adsorbed water, ClNO is hydrolyzed on the particle surface to yield NO and NO(2), potentially via a HONO intermediate. NO(2) undergoes further hydrolysis via a surface-mediated process, resulting in N(2)O as an additional nitrogen-containing product. In the presence of broad-band irradiation (λ > 300 nm) gas-phase products can undergo photochemistry, e.g., ClNO photodissociates to NO and chlorine atoms. The gas-phase product distribution also depends on particle mineralogy (Al(2)O(3) vs CaCO(3)) and the presence of other coadsorbed gases (e.g., NH(3)). These newly identified reaction pathways discussed here involve continuous production of active ozone-depleting chlorine and nitrogen species from stable sinks such as gas-phase HCl and HNO(3) as a result of heterogeneous surface reactions. Given that aluminosilicates represent a major fraction of mineral dust aerosol, aluminum oxide can be used as a model system to begin to understand various aspects of possible reactions on mineral dust aerosol surfaces.  相似文献

The reaction of N(2)O(5) on sea salt aerosol is a sink for atmospheric nitrogen oxides and a source of the Cl radical. We present room-temperature measurements of the N(2)O(5) loss rate on submicron artificial seawater (ASW) aerosol, performed with an entrained aerosol flow tube coupled to a chemical ionization mass spectrometer, as a function of aerosol phase (aqueous or partially crystalline), liquid water content, and size. We also present an analysis of the product growth kinetics showing that ClNO(2) is produced at a rate equal to N(2)O(5) loss, with an estimated lower limit yield of 50% at 50% relative humidity (RH). The reaction probability for N(2)O(5), gamma(N(2)(O)(5)), depends strongly on the particle phase, being 0.005 +/- 0.004 on partially crystalline ASW aerosol at 30% RH and 0.03 +/- 0.008 on aqueous ASW aerosol at 65% RH. At 50% RH, N(2)O(5) loss is relatively insensitive to particle size for radii greater than 100 nm, and gamma(N(2)(O)(5)) displays a statistically insignificant increase from 0.022 to approximately 0.03 for aqueous ASW aerosol over the RH range of 43-70%. We find that the presence of millimolar levels of hexanoic acid in the aerosol bulk decreases the gamma(N(2)(O)(5)) at 70% RH by a factor of 3-4 from approximately 0.025 to 0.008 +/- 0.004. This reduction is likely due to the partitioning of hexanoic acid to the gas-aerosol interface at a surface coverage that we estimate to be equivalent to a monolayer. This result is the first evidence that a monolayer coating of aqueous organic surfactant can slow the reactive uptake of atmospheric trace gases to aerosol.

The reaction of nitric acid with calcite aerosol at varying relative humidities has been studied under suspended particle conditions in an atmospheric reaction chamber using infrared absorption spectroscopy. The reactant concentration in the chamber, as well as the appearance of gas phase products and surface adsorbed species, was spectroscopically monitored before and after mixing with CaCO(3) (calcite) particles. The interaction with HNO(3) was found to lead to gas phase CO(2) evolution and increased water uptake due to heterogeneous conversion of the carbonate to particulate nitrate. The reaction was enhanced as the relative humidity of the system was increased, especially at relative humidities above the reported deliquescence point of particulate Ca(NO(3))(2). The measured reaction extent demonstrates that the total calcite particulate mass is available for reaction with HNO(3) and the conversion process is not limited to the particle surface. The spectroscopy of the surface formed nitrate suggests a highly concentrated solution environment with a significant degree of ion pairing. The implications of the HNO(3) loss and the formation of the particulate nitrate product for atmospheric chemistry are discussed.  相似文献

Limonene has a high emission rate both from biogenic sources and from household solvents. Here we examine the limonene + ozone reaction as a source for secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Our data show that limonene has very high potential to form SOA and that NO(x) levels, O(3) levels, and UV radiation all influence SOA formation. High SOA formation is observed under conditions where both double bonds in limonene are oxidized, but those conditions depend strongly on NO(x). At low NO(x), heterogeneous oxidation of the terminal double bond follows the initial limonene ozonolysis (at the endocyclic double bond) almost immediately, making the initial reaction rate limiting. This requires a high uptake coefficient between ozone and the first-generation, unsaturated organic particles. However, at high NO(x), this heterogeneous processing is inhibited and gas-phase oxidation of the terminal double bond dominates. Although this chemistry is slower, it also yields products with low volatility. UV light suppresses production of the lowest volatility products, as we have shown in earlier studies of the alpha-pinene + ozone reaction.  相似文献

Catalytic ozone (O3) decomposition at high relative humidity (RH) remains a great challenge due to the catalysts poison and deactivation under high humidity. Here, we firstly elaborate the role of water activation and the corresponding mechanism of the promoted O3 decomposition over the three-dimensional monolithic molybdenum oxide/graphdiyne (MoO3/GDY) catalyst. The O3 decomposition over MoO3/GDY reaches up to 100 % under high humid condition (75 % RH) at room temperature, which is 4.0 times as high as that of dry conditions, significantly surpasses other carbon-based MoO3 materials(≤7.1 %). The sp-hybridized carbon in GDY donates electrons to MoO3 along the C−O−Mo bond, facilitating water activation to form hydroxyl species. As a result, hydroxyl species dissociated from water act as new active sites, promoting the adsorption of O3 and the generation of new intermediate species (hydroxyl ⋅OH and superoxo ⋅O2), which significantly lowers the energy barriers of O3 decomposition (0.57 eV lower than dry conditions).  相似文献

The kinetics of reactive uptake of N2O5 on submicron aerosol particles containing humic acid and ammonium sulfate has been investigated as a function of relative humidity (RH) and aerosol composition using a laminar flow reactor coupled with a differential mobility analyzer (DMA) to characterize the aerosol. For single-component humic acid aerosol the uptake coefficient, gamma, was found to increase from 2 to 9 x 10(-4) over the range 25-75% RH. These values are 1-2 orders of magnitude below those typically observed for single-component sulfate aerosols (Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2003, 5, 3453-3463;(1) Atmos. Environ. 2000, 34, 2131-2159(2)). For the mixed aerosols, gamma was found to decrease with increasing humic acid mass fraction and increase with increasing RH. For aerosols containing only 6% humic acid by dry mass, a decrease in reactivity of more than a factor of 2 was observed compared with the case for single-component ammonium sulfate. The concentration of liquid water in the aerosol droplets was calculated using the aerosol inorganic model (for the ammonium sulfate component) and a new combined FTIR-DMA system (for the humic acid component). Analysis of the uptake coefficients using the water concentration data shows that the change in reactivity cannot be explained by the change in water content alone. We suggest that, due to its surfactant properties, the main effect of the humic acid is to reduce the mass accommodation coefficient for N2O5 at the aerosol particle surface. This has implications for the use of particle hygroscopicity data for predictions of the rate of N2O5 hydrolysis.  相似文献

The HO2 uptake coefficients (γ) for organic submicron aerosol particles were measured using an aerosol flow tube coupled with a chemical conversion/laser‐induced fluorescence technique under ambient conditions (760 Torr and 296 ± 2 K) and different values of relative humidity (RH) (28% and 68%). Determined uptake coefficients for succinic, glutaric, adipic, and pimelic acid aerosol particles at 28% RH were 0.07 ± 0.02, 0.07 ± 0.03, 0.02 ± 0.01, and 0.06 ± 0.03, respectively, whereas the γ values for those particles at 68% RH were 0.18 ± 0.07, 0.15 ± 0.04, 0.06 ± 0.01, and 0.13 ± 0.04, respectively. An increase in γ with increasing RH was observed for all the dicarboxylic acids, suggesting a contribution by water amount in the particle, aqueous phase chemistry, and uptake of HO2–H2O. The anomalously low γ values for adipic acid are likely related to its high crystallization RH and thus provide a new clue that the water amount and/or RH have a significant influence on HO2 uptake.  相似文献

Transparent alpha-Fe2O3 films with varying film thickness were formed on a SnO2 transparent conducting film-coated glass substrate by metal organic deposition. Under anodic-biased conditions, the alpha-Fe2O3 film showed a high photocatalytic activity for the decomposition of 2-NAP with visible light irradiation. The alpha-Fe2O3 is transformed to inactive hydroxide as the reaction proceeds, while the activity of alpha-Fe2O3 is almost maintained in acetonitrile.  相似文献

The kinetics of the hydrolysis reaction of N(2)O(5) on secondary organic aerosol (SOA) produced through the ozonolysis of α-pinene and on mixed ammonium bisulfate-SOA particles was investigated using an entrained aerosol flow tube coupled to a chemical ionization mass spectrometer. We report room temperature uptake coefficients, γ, on ammonium bisulfate and SOA particles at 50% relative humidity of 1.5 × 10(-2) ± 1.5 × 10(-3) and 1.5 × 10(-4) ± 2 × 10(-5), respectively. For the mixed ammonium bisulfate-SOA particles, γ decreased from 2.6 × 10(-3) ± 4 × 10(-4) to 3.0 × 10(-4) ± 3 × 10(-5) as the SOA mass fraction increased from 9 to 79, indicating a strong suppression in γ with the addition of organic material. There is an order-of-magnitude reduction in the uptake coefficient with the smallest amount of SOA material present and smaller additional reductions with increasing aerosol organic content. This newly coated organic layer may either decrease the mass accommodation coefficient of N(2)O(5) onto the particle or hinder the dissolution and diffusion of N(2)O(5) into the remainder of the aerosol after it has been accommodated onto the surface. The former corresponds to a surface effect and the latter to bulk processes. The low value of the uptake coefficient on pure SOA particles will likely make N(2)O(5) hydrolysis insignificant on such an aerosol, but atmospheric chemistry models need to account for the role that organics may play in suppressing the kinetics of this reaction on mixed organic-inorganic particles.  相似文献

The heterogeneous interaction of H(2)O(2) with TiO(2) surface was investigated under dark conditions and in the presence of UV light using a low pressure flow tube reactor coupled with a quadrupole mass spectrometer. The uptake coefficients were measured as a function of the initial concentration of gaseous H(2)O(2) ([H(2)O(2)](0) = (0.17-120) × 10(12) molecules cm(-3)), irradiance intensity (J(NO(2)) = 0.002-0.012 s(-1)), relative humidity (RH = 0.003-82%), and temperature (T = 275-320 K). Under dark conditions, a deactivation of TiO(2) surface upon exposure to H(2)O(2) was observed, and only initial uptake coefficient of H(2)O(2) was measured, given by the following expression: γ(0)(dark) = 4.1 × 10(-3)/(1 + RH(0.65)) (calculated using BET surface area, estimated conservative uncertainty of 30%) at T = 300 K. The steady-state uptake coefficient measured on UV irradiated TiO(2) surface, γ(ss)(UV), was found to be independent of RH and showed a strong inverse dependence on [H(2)O(2)] and linear dependence on photon flux. In addition, slight negative temperature dependence, γ(ss)(UV) = 7.2 × 10(-4) exp[(460 ± 80)/T], was observed in the temperature range (275-320) K (with [H(2)O(2)] ≈ 5 × 10(11) molecules cm(-3) and J(NO(2)) = 0.012 s(-1)). Experiments with NO addition into the reactive system provided indirect evidence for HO(2) radical formation upon H(2)O(2) uptake, and the possible reaction mechanism is proposed. Finally, the atmospheric lifetime of H(2)O(2) with respect to the heterogeneous loss on mineral dust was estimated (using the uptake data for TiO(2)) to be in the range of hours during daytime, i.e., comparable to H(2)O(2) photolysis lifetime (~1 day), which is the major removal process of hydrogen peroxide in the atmosphere. These data indicate a strong potential impact of H(2)O(2) uptake on mineral aerosol on the HO(x) chemistry in the troposphere.  相似文献
