While the trimetallic nitrides of Sc, Y and the lanthanides between Gd and Lu preferentially template C(80) cages, M(3)N@C(80), and while those of Ce, Pr and Nd preferentially template the C(88) cage, M(3)N@C(88), we show herein that the largest metallic nitride cluster, La(3)N, preferentially leads to the formation of La(3)N@C(96) and to a lesser extent the La(3)N@C(88). This is the first time that La(3)N is successfully encapsulated inside fullerene cages. La(3)N@C(2n) metallofullerenes were synthesized by arcing packed graphite rods in a modified Kr?tschmer-Huffman arc reactor, extracted from the collected soot and identified by mass spectroscopy. They were isolated and purified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Different arcing conditions were studied to maximize fullerene production, and results showed that yields have a high La(2)O(3)/C dependence. Relatively high yields were obtained when a 1:5 ratio was used. Three main fractions, La(3)N@C(88), La(3)N@C(92), and La(3)N@C(96), were characterized by UV/Vis-NIR and cyclic voltammetry. Unlike other trimetallic nitride metallofullerenes of the same carbon cage size, La(3)N@C(88) exhibits a higher HOMO-LUMO gap and irreversible reduction and oxidation steps.  相似文献

High-performance liquid chromatography was used to isolate two new trimetallic nitride endohedral fullerenes, Gd3N@C2n (n = 42 and 44), and they were characterized by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, UV-vis-NIR, and cyclic voltammetry. It was found that their electronic HOMO-LUMO gaps depend pronouncedly on the size of the cage, from a large band gap for Gd3N@C80 (2.02 V) to a small band gap for Gd3N@C88 (1.49 V). The electrochemical properties also change dramatically with the size of the cage, going from irreversible for the C80 cage to reversible for Gd3N@C88. The latter is the largest trimetallic cluster inside C88 isolated and characterized to date. Gd3N@C88 has one of the lowest electrochemical energy gaps for a nonderivatized metallofullerene.  相似文献

The smallest fullerene to form in condensing carbon vapor has received considerable interest since the discovery of Buckminsterfullerene, C(60). Smaller fullerenes remain a largely unexplored class of all-carbon molecules that are predicted to exhibit fascinating properties due to the large degree of curvature and resulting highly pyramidalized carbon atoms in their structures. However, that curvature also renders the smallest fullerenes highly reactive, making them difficult to detect experimentally. Gas-phase attempts to investigate the smallest fullerene by stabilization through cage encapsulation of a metal have been hindered by the complexity of mass spectra that result from vaporization experiments which include non-fullerene clusters, empty cages, and metallofullerenes. We use high-resolution FT-ICR mass spectrometry to overcome that problem and investigate formation of the smallest fullerene by use of a pulsed laser vaporization cluster source. Here, we report that the C(28) fullerene stabilized by encapsulation with an appropriate metal forms directly from carbon vapor as the smallest fullerene under our conditions. Its stabilization is investigated, and we show that M@C(28) is formed by a bottom-up growth mechanism and is a precursor to larger metallofullerenes. In fact, it appears that the encapsulating metal species may catalyze or nucleate endohedral fullerene formation.  相似文献

The synthesis and characterisation of the new endohedral cluster fullerene Sc(3)CH@C(80) is reported. The encapsulation of the first hydrocarbon cluster inside a fullerene was achieved by the arc burning method in a reactive CH(4) atmosphere. The extensive characterisation by mass spectrometry (MS), high- pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), (45)Sc NMR, electron spin resonance (ESR), UV/Vis-NIR and Raman spectroscopy provided the experimental evidence for the caging of the five-atom Sc(3)CH cluster inside the C(80) cage isomer with icosahedral symmetry. The proposed new structure was confirmed by DFT calculations, which gave a closed shell and large energy gap structure. Thus a pyramidal Sc(3)CH cluster and the I(h)-C(80) cage were shown to be the most stable configuration for Sc(3)CH@C(80) whereas alternative structures give a smaller bonding energy as well as a smaller energy gap.  相似文献

X-ray analyses of the cocrystals of a series of carbide cluster metallofullerenes Sc(2)C(2)@C(2n) (n = 40-42) with cobalt(II) octaethylporphyrin present new insights into the molecular structures and cluster-cage interactions of these less-explored species. Along with the unambiguous identification of the cage structures for the three isomers of Sc(2)C(2)@C(2v)(5)-C(80), Sc(2)C(2)@C(3v)(8)-C(82), and Sc(2)C(2)@D(2d)(23)-C(84), a clear correlation between the cluster strain and cage size is observed in this series: Sc-Sc distances and dihedral angles of the bent cluster increase along with cage expansion, indicating that the bending strain within the cluster makes it pursue a planar structure to the greatest degree possible. However, the C-C distances within Sc(2)C(2) remain unchanged when the cage expands, perhaps because of the unusual bent structure of the cluster, preventing contact between the cage and the C(2) unit. Moreover, analyses revealed that larger cages provide more space for the cluster to rotate. The preferential formation of cluster endohedral metallofullerenes for scandium might be associated with its small ionic radius and the strong coordination ability as well.  相似文献

The structure, electronic property, and infrared spectroscopy of endohedral metallofullerenes TM@C20 (TM = Ce and Gd) have been systematically investigated with the aid of the hybrid DFT‐B3LYP functional. It is found that in the endohedral metallofullerenes the average C? C bond lengths are obvious longer than those of empty cage. The frontier orbital analyses show that the endohedral metallofullerene Gd@C20 has the high‐thermodynamic stability. Natural population analysis also tells us that only in the Ce@C20, the Ce atom acts as an electron acceptor with the negative charges, and the 4f orbitals of Ce and Gd atoms have a significant contribution in the formation of chemical bonding. Additionally, the analyses of harmonic vibrational frequencies reveal that when the TM atoms are encapsulated into the C20 cage, the strongest absorption peaks are characterized by a mixture of TM?C bending and C? C stretching vibrations. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Quantum Chem, 2011  相似文献

We conducted a combined anion photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory study on the structural evolution of copper-doped silicon clusters, CuSi(n)(-) (n = 4-18). Based on the comparison between the experiments and theoretical calculations, CuSi(12)(-) is suggested to be the smallest fully endohedral cluster. The low-lying isomers of CuSi(n)(-) with n ≥ 12 are dominated by endohedral structures, those of CuSi(n)(-) with n < 12 are dominated by exohedral structures. The most stable structure of CuSi(12)(-) is a double-chair endohedral structure with the copper atom sandwiched between two chair-style Si(6) rings or, in another word, encapsulated in a distorted Si(12) hexagonal prism cage. CuSi(14)(-) has an interesting C(3h) symmetry structure, in which the Si(14) cage is composed by three four-membered rings and six five-membered rings.  相似文献

Lanthanum endohedral metallofulleropyrrolidines have been synthesized for the first time through addition of an azomethine ylide to La@C(82)-A in toluene. It was found that the addition reaction is very efficient and, to some extent, regioselective. Two major endohedral metallofulleropyrrolidines, a monoadduct and a bisadduct of La@C(82)-A with abundance ratio of approximately 1:0.4, have been isolated by HPLC chromatography and characterized by mass spectrometry, UV/Vis-NIR absorption, and EPR spectroscopy. The electronic structure of La@C(82)-A has been modified slightly upon monoaddition and significantly upon bisaddition of the pyrrolidines.  相似文献

We analyze the electronic structure of carbide endohedral metallofullerenes of the type Sc(2)C(2)@C(82) and study the possibility of rotation of the encapsulated Sc(2)C(2) moiety in the interior of the cage. Moreover, we rationalize the higher abundance of M(2)C(2)@C(82) (M = Sc, Y) in which the metal-carbide cluster is encapsulated in the C(3v)-C(82):8 carbon cage with respect to other carbides of the same family on the basis of the formal transfer of four electrons from the cluster to the cage and sizeable (LUMO-3)-(LUMO-2) gap in the empty cages. This rule also applies to all those endohedral metallofullerenes in which the encapsulated cluster transfers four electrons to the carbon cage as, for example, the reduced [M@C(82)](-) systems (M = group 3 or lanthanide metal ion).  相似文献

The synthesis, isolation, and spectroscopic characterizations of an endohedral fullerene with four heteroatoms encapsulated (ScYErN@C80) are reported for the first time. The isomeric structure and electronic properties of this molecule are studied by various spectrometry methods such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), laser desorption time-of-flight (LD-TOF) mass spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and visible-near infrared (vis-NIR) absorption spectroscopy. The carbon cage of ScYErN@C80 is assigned as Ih-C80, and the four-membered ScYErN cluster is suggested to rotate rapidly inside the fullerene cage. Six electrons are transferred from the nuclear cluster ScYErN to the fullerene cage, which leads to a closed-shell electronic structure of the Ih-C80 and results in excellent stability of this molecule.  相似文献

It is known that silicon fullerenes cannot maintain perfect cage structures like carbon fullerenes. Previous density-functional theory calculations have shown that even with encapsulated species, nearly all endohedral silicon fullerenes exhibit highly puckered cage structures in comparison with their carbon counterparts. In this work, we present theoretical evidences that the tetrahedral fullerene cage Si(28) can be fully stabilized by encapsulating a tetrahedral metallic cluster (Al(4) or Ga(4)). To our knowledge, this is the first predicted endohedral silicon fullerene that can retain perfectly the same cage structure (without puckering) as the carbon fullerene counterpart (T(d)-C(28) fullerene). Density-functional theory calculations also suggest that the two endohedral metallosilicon fullerenes T(d)-M(4)@Si(28) (M=Al and Ga) can be chemically stable because both clusters have a large highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy gap ( approximately 0.9 eV), strong spherical aromaticity (nucleus-independent chemical shift value of -36 and -44), and large binding and embedding energies.  相似文献

Vanadium oxide clusters, (V2O5)n, have been predicted to possess interesting polyhedral cage structures, which may serve as ideal molecular models for oxide surfaces and catalysts. Here we examine the electronic properties of these oxide clusters via anion photoelectron spectroscopy for (V2O5)n(-) (n = 2-4), as well as for the 4d/5d species, Nb4O10(-) and Ta4O10(-). Well-resolved photoelectron spectra have been obtained at 193 and 157 nm and used to compare with density functional calculations. Very high electron affinities and large HOMO-LUMO gaps are observed for all the (V2O5)n clusters. The HOMO-LUMO gaps of (V2O5)n, all exceeding that of the band gap of the bulk oxide, are found to increase with cluster size from n = 2-4. For the M4O10 clusters, we find that the Nb/Ta species yield similar spectra, both possessing lower electron affinities and larger HOMO-LUMO gaps relative to V4O10. The structures of the anionic and neutral clusters are optimized; the calculated electron binding energies and excitation spectra for the global minimum cage structures are in good agreement with the experiment. Evidence is also observed for the predicted trend of electron delocalization versus localization in the (V2O5)n(-) clusters. Further insights are provided pertaining to the potential chemical reactivities of the oxide clusters and properties of the bulk oxides.  相似文献

A new family of endohedral fullerenes, based on an encaged trithulium nitride (Tm(3)N) cluster, was synthesised, isolated and characterised by HPLC, mass spectrometry, and visible-NIR and FTIR spectroscopy. Tm(3)N clusterfullerenes with cages as small as C(76) and as large as C(88) were prepared and six of them were isolated. Tm(3)N@C(78) is a small clusterfullerene. The two isomers of Tm(3)N@C(80) (I and II) were the most abundant structures in the fullerene soot. Tm(3)N@C(82), Tm(3)N@C(84), and Tm(3)N@C(86) represent a new series of higher clusterfullerenes. All six isolated Tm(3)N clusterfullerenes were classified as large energy-gap structures with optical energy gaps between approximately 1.2 and approximately 1.75 eV. Tm(3)N@C(80) (I) and Tm(3)N@C(80) (II) were assigned to the C(80) cages C(80):7 (I(h)) and C(80):6 (D(5h)). For Tm(3)N@C(78), the analysis pointed to an elliptical carbon cage with C(78):1 (D(3)) or C(78):4 (D(3h)) being the probable structures.  相似文献

Bingel–Hirsch derivatives of the trimetallic nitride template endohedral metallofullerenes (TNT‐EMFs) Sc3N@Ih‐C80 and Lu3N@Ih‐C80 were prepared by reacting these compounds with 2‐bromodiethyl malonate, 2‐bromo‐1,3‐dipyrrolidin‐1‐ylpropane‐1,3‐dionate bromide, and 9‐bromo fluorene. The mono‐adducts were isolated and their 1H NMR spectra showed that the addition occurred with high regioselectivity at the [6,6] bonds of the Ih‐C80 fullerene cage. Electrochemical analysis showed that the reductive electrochemistry behavior of these derivatives is irreversible at a scan rate of 100 mV s?1, which is comparable to the behavior of the pristine fullerene species. The first reduction potential of each derivative is either cathodically or anodically shifted by a different value, depending on the attached addend. Bis‐adducts containing EtOOC‐C‐COOEt and HC‐COOEt addends were isolated by HPLC and in the case of Sc3N@Ih‐C80 the first reduction potential exhibits a larger shift towards negative potentials when compared to the mono‐adduct. This observation is important for designing acceptor materials for the construction of bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells, since the polyfunctionalization not only increases the solubility of the fullerene species but also offers a promising approach for bringing the LUMO energy levels closer for the donor and the acceptor materials.  相似文献

The vibrational structure of the endohedral cluster fullerene Sc(3)N@C(78) is studied by FTIR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and DFT-based quantum chemical calculations. Remarkably good agreement between experimental and calculated spectra is achieved and a full assignment of the Sc(3)N-based vibrational modes is given. Significant differences in the vibrational structure of the endohedral cluster fullerene Sc(3)N@C(78) and the empty, charged C(78) (6-): 5 (D(3h)') are rationalized by the strong coupling between the Sc(3)N cluster and the fullerene cage. This coupling has its origin in a significant overlap of the Sc(3)N and C(78) molecular orbitals, and causes atomic-charge and bond-length redistributions compared to the neutral C(78) and the C(78) (6-) anion. An ionic model is not sufficient to describe the electronic, geometric and vibrational structure of the Sc(3)N@C(78) nitride cluster fullerene.  相似文献

A method was developed for the synthesis of trifluoromethyl derivatives of endohedral metallofullerenes (EMF) encapsulating cerium based on the high-temperature solid-state reaction of silver trifluoroacetate with a DMF extract of EMF enriched with Ce@C82. The trifluoromethyl derivatives Ce@C82(CF3)5 (isomers I–III) with high purity (98–99%) were synthesized and isolated for the first time. These compounds were characterized by HPLC, S8-MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, and optical spectroscopy.  相似文献

The structural and electronic effects of isoelectronic substitution by Ag and Cu atoms on gold cluster anions in the size range between 13 and 15 atoms are studied using a combination of photoelectron spectroscopy and first-principles density functional calculations. The most stable structures of the doped clusters are compared with those of the undoped Au clusters in the same size range. The joint experimental and theoretical study reveals a new C(3v) symmetric isomer for Au(13)(-), which is present in the experiment, but has hitherto not been recognized. The global minima of Au(14)(-) and Au(15)(-) are resolved on the basis of comparison between experiment and newly computed photoelectron spectra that include spin-orbit effects. The coexistence of two isomers for Au(15)(-) is firmly established with convincing experimental evidence and theoretical calculations. The overall effect of the isoelectronic substitution is minor on the structures relative to those of the undoped clusters, except that the dopant atoms tend to lower the symmetries of the doped clusters.  相似文献

The (13)C NMR spectra were measured for three isomers of Tm@C(82), which is one of the divalent metallofullerenes. The molecular symmetries were determined for each isomer: isomer I has C(s) symmetry, isomer II has C(2) symmetry, and isomer III has C(2v) symmetry. Moreover the cage structure of Tm@C(82)(III) was found to be C(82)(9). As a result, it was revealed that Tm@C(82)(III) has a cage identical to that of La@C(82), which is one of the trivalent metallofullerenes.  相似文献

The production, isolation, and spectroscopic characterization of a new Dy3N@C80 cluster fullerene that exhibits three isomers (1-3) is reported for the first time. In addition, the third isomer (3) forms a completely new C80 cage structure that has not been reported in any endohedral fullerenes so far. The isomeric structures of the Dy3N@C80 cluster fullerene were analyzed by studying HPLC retention behavior, laser desorption time-of-flight (LD-TOF) mass spectrometry, and UV-Vis-NIR and FTIR spectroscopy. The three isomers of Dy3N@C80 were all large band-gap (1.51, 1.33, and 1.31 eV for 1-3, respectively) materials, and could be classified as very stable fullerenes. According to results of FTIR spectroscopy, the Dy3N@C80 (I) (1) was assigned to the fullerene cage C80:7 (I(h)), whereas Dy3N@C80 (II) (2) had the cage structure of C80:6 (D(5h)). The most probable cage structure of Dy3N@C80 (III) (3) was proposed to be C80:1 (D(5d)). The significant differences between Dy3N@C80 and other reported M3N@C80 (M = Sc, Y, Gd, Tb, Ho, Er, Tm) cluster fullerenes are discussed in detail, and the strong influence of the metal on the nitride cluster fullerene formation is concluded.  相似文献
