Thin polymeric films are increasingly being utilized in diverse technological applications, and it is crucial to have a reliable method to characterize the stability of these films against dewetting. The parameter space that influences the dewetting of thin polymer films is wide (molecular mass, temperature, film thickness, substrate interaction) and a combinatorial method of investigation is suitable. We thus construct a combinatorial library of observations for polystyrene (PS) films cast on substrates having orthogonal temperature and surface energy gradients and perform a series of measurements for a range of molecular masses (1800 g/mol < M < 35 000 g/mol) and film thicknesses h (30 nm < h < 40 nm) to explore these primary parameter axes. We were able to obtain a near-universal scaling curve describing a wetting-dewetting transition line for polystyrene films of fixed thickness by introducing reduced temperature and surface energy variables dependent on M. Our observations also indicate that the apparent polymer surface tension gamma(p) becomes appreciably modified in thin polymer films from its bulk counterpart for films thinner than about 100-200 nm, so that bulk gamma(p) measurements cannot be used to estimate the stability of ultrathin films. Both of these observations are potentially fundamental for the control of thin film stability in applications where film dewetting can compromise film function.  相似文献

The process of nonsolvent-induced dewetting of thin polystyrene (PS) films on hydrophilic surfaces at room temperature has been studied by using water as a nonsolvent. It is observed that the process of nonsolvent-induced dewetting is greatly different from other previous dewetting processes. The PS film is found in nonviscous state in our study. A mechanism of nonsolvent-induced dewetting is deduced in an order of penetration, replacement, and coalescent, and it is different from other previous dewetting mechanisms. The results of experiments are analyzed from thermodynamics and dynamics to support the hypothetical mechanism.  相似文献

We use Dip-Pen Nanolithography (DPN) to generate monolayer surface templates for guiding pattern formation in spin-coated polymer blend films. We study template-directed pattern formation in blends of polystyrene/poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS/P2VP) as well as blends of PS and the semiconducting conjugated polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). We show that acid-terminated monolayers can be used to template pattern formation in PS/P3HT blends, while hydrophobic monolayers can be used to template pattern formation in PS/P2VP blends. In both blends, the polymer patterns comprise laterally-phase separated regions surrounded by vertically separated bilayers. We hypothesize that the observed patterns are formed by template-induced dewetting of the bottom layer of a polymer bilayer during the spin-coating process. We compare the effects of template feature size and spacing on the resulting polymer patterns with predictions from published models of template-directed dewetting in thin films and find the data in good agreement. For both blends we observe that a minimum feature size is required to nucleate dewetting/phase separation. We find this minimum template diameter to be approximately 180 nm in 50/50 PS/P2VP blends, and approximately 100 nm in 50/50 PS/P3HT blends. For larger template diameters, PS/P2VP blends show evidence for pattern formation beginning at the template boundaries, while PS/P3HT blends rupture randomly across the template features.  相似文献

A novel temperature‐step experimental method that extends the Bodiguel‐Fretigny liquid dewetting method of investigating polymer thin films is described and results presented from an investigation of thickness effects on the glass transition temperature (Tg) of ultrathin polystyrene (PS) films. Unlike most other methods of thin film investigation, this procedure promises a rapid screening tool to determine the overall profile of Tg versus film thickness for ultrathin polymer films using a limited number of samples. Similar to our prior observations and other literature data, with this new method obvious Tg depression was observed for PS thin films dewetting on both glycerol and an ionic liquid. The results for PS dewetting on the two different liquids are similar indicating only modest effects of the substrate on the Tg‐film thickness relationship. In both instances, the Tg depression is somewhat less than for similar PSs supported on silicon substrates reported in the literature. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. We investigate the dewetting of aqueous, evaporating polymer [poly(acrylic acid)] solutions cast on glassy hydrophobic (polystyrene) substrates. As in ordinary dewetting, the evaporating films initially break up through the nucleation of holes that perforate the film, but the rapidly growing holes become unstable and form nonequilibrium patterns resembling fingering patterns that arise when injecting air into a liquid between two closely spaced plates (Hele–Shaw patterns). This is natural because the formation of holes in thin films is similar to air injection into a polymer film where the thermodynamic driving force of dewetting is the analogue of the applied pressure in the flow measurement. The patterns formed in the rapidly dewetting and evaporating polymer films become frozen into a stable glassy state after most of the solvent (water) has evaporated, leaving stationary patterns that can be examined by atomic force microscopy and optical microscopy. Similar patterns have been observed in water films evaporating from mica substrates, block copolymer films, and modest hole fingering has also been found in the dewetting of dry polymer films. From these varied observations, we expect this dewetting‐induced fingering instability to occur generally when the dewetting rate and film viscosity are sufficiently large. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We investigated the dewetting of metastable poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PNVP) thin films (45 nm) on top of polystyrene (PS) thin films (58 nm) as a function of annealing temperature and molecular weight of PS (96 and 6850 kg/mol). We focused on the competition between dewetting, occurring as a result of unfavorable intermolecular interactions at the PNVP/PS interface, and spontaneous cross-linking of PNVP, occurring during thermal annealing, as we recently reported (Telford, A. M.; James, M.; Meagher, L.; Neto, C. ACS Appl. Mater. Interfaces 2010, 2, 2399-2408). Using optical microscopy, we studied how the dewetting morphology and dynamics at different temperatures depended on the relative viscosity of the top PNVP film, which increased with cross-linking time, and of the bottom PS film. In the PNVP/PS96K system, cross-linking dominated over dewetting at temperatures below 180 °C, reducing drastically nucleated hole density and their maximum size, while above 180 °C the two processes reversed, with complete dewetting occurring at 200 °C. On the other hand, the PNVP/PS6850K system never achieved advanced dewetting stages as the dewetting was slower than cross-linking in the investigated temperature range. In both systems, dewetting of the PNVP films could be avoided altogether by thermally annealing the bilayers at temperatures where cross-linking dominated. The cross-linking was characterized quantitatively using neutron reflectometry, which indicated shrinkage and densification of the PNVP film, and qualitatively through selective removal of the bottom PS film. A simple model accounting for progressive cross-linking during the dewetting process predicted well the observed hole growth profiles and produced estimates of the PNVP cross-linking rate coefficients and of the activation energy of the process, in good agreement with literature values for similar systems.  相似文献

The dewetting behavior of thin polystyrene (PS) film has been investigated by placing an upper plate with a ca. 140 nm gap from the underlying substrate with the spin-coated thin polymer films. Three different kinds of dewetting behaviors of thin PS film have been observed after annealing according to the relative position of the PS film to the upper plate. Since the upper plate is smaller than the underlying substrate, a part of the polymer film is not covered by the plate. In this region (I), thin PS film dewetting occurs in a conventional manner, as previously reported. While in the region covered by the upper plate (III), the PS film exhibits unusual dewetted patterns. Meanwhile, in the area right under the edge of the plate (II) (i.e., the area between region I and region III), highly ordered arrays of PS droplets are formed. Formation mechanisms of different dewetted patterns are discussed in detail. This study may offer an effective way to improve the understanding of various dewetting behaviors and facilitate the ongoing exploration of utilizing dewetting as a patterning technique.  相似文献

We report a novel method for the immobilization of Tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq3) onto poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) thin polymer films by UV irradiation cross-linking. The polymer films were prepared by spin-coating of P4VP onto cleaned silicon wafer surface followed by UV irradiation. The thicknesses of the polymer thin films were measured by ellipsometry with different irradiation times. The immobilization of Alq3, orientation and the surface activity were followed using photoluminescence and UV-visible spectroscopy. The surface morphology was investigated by using field emission scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Patterning of Alq3 on P4VP film was obtained using photolithography technique. Our experimental results show that the cross-linked P4VP thin film is a universal surface modifier.  相似文献

The surface structure of thin polymer blend films of deuterated polystyrene (dPS) and polyparamethylstyrene (PpMS) after annealing above the glass transition temperature was investigated. With scanning force microscopy (SFM) the surface topography originated by a dewetting process is detected. The sample surface is covered with small droplets consisting of several polymer molecules. Utilizing grazing incidence small angle neutron scattering (GISANS) the topographical information as well as the in‐plane composition is probed. For thin confined blend films a substructure of the droplets resulting from an additional phase separation process at different length scales is detected.  相似文献

The controlled electrophoretic deposition of polystyrene/divinylbenzene (PS/DVB) star polymer films from a colloidal suspension is reported. Liquid suspensions, containing the PS/DVB star polymer, were prepared by injecting a dichloromethane (DCM) solution of the star polymer into a stratified liquid combination of hexane and DCM. A variety of hexane/DCM volume ratios were examined to identify the optimal solution conditions for electrophoretic deposition; thin films were produced from both unmixed and well-mixed hexane/DCM suspensions. Unmixed suspensions yielded spatially separated thin films, deposited in a controlled fashion, that were dependent on the polarity of the corresponding electrode. Films on the positive electrode differed in thickness, microstructure, and appearance from those formed on the negative electrode. In contrast, films produced from well-mixed hexane/DCM suspensions deposited uniformly across only the negative electrode. Atomic force microscopy studies revealed nanostructured surface morphologies that were unique to each of these films. Additionally, these microscopy studies shed light on the possible conformations of star polymers adsorbed on a surface. By controlling the composition and the mixing state of the solution and by controlling the bias of electrodes, we achieved controlled deposition of star polymer films with a specific nanostructure. These nanostructured films may have broad use in optical and biological device applications.  相似文献

We present dewetting experiments on thin polymer films as a function of cross-linking density. Covalent cross-links were obtained in the glassy state on the basis of azide photochemistry of linear random copolymers of styrene and p-(azidomethyl)styrene, i.e., 106 and 2500 kg/mol with 7% and 1% azide functionality among the polymer backbone, respectively. Upon ultraviolet radiation, azides generate highly unstable nitrene radicals which react with the surrounding polymer backbone, yielding covalent cross-links. We determined the probability for film rupture, defined by the number of holes formed per unit area, and the relaxation time (tauw) of residual stresses which resulted from the film preparation process. For the lower molar mass polymer studied and for azide conversion rates lower than 60%, only partial cross-linking occurred. The effective molar mass of the polymer increased, and consequently, an increase in tauw was observed. The increase in tauw was accompanied by a decrease in hole density, indicating that the still present residual stresses in the films were not able anymore to rupture the films at the high probability of un-cross-linked polymers. For high conversion (>60%), cross-linking was significant enough to lead to the formation of a three-dimensional rubbery network which, in turn, generated an elastic force that counteracted the driving forces. This elastic force eventually inhibited dewetting and the relaxation of residual stresses. Thus, at high conversions, the relaxation time tauw grew exponentially and the number of holes tended toward zero. For the higher molar mass polymer, no changes in the relaxation time tauw were observed for low conversion (<30%). However, at a higher conversion rate, tauw increased drastically, suggesting an almost infinitely long relaxation time at 100% conversion. Consequently, to successfully stabilize thin polymer films by cross-linking, it is preferable to use long polymer chains.  相似文献

The influence of the dispersion states of the nanofillers on the dewetting behavior of the polymer thin film was investigated. Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) with various substituents were added into polystyrene (PS) thin films as the nanofillers. The dewetting rate of the films drastically changed with the surface substituents of POSS additives. Neutron reflectivity measurements indicated that the difference of the dewetting rate was associated with the dispersion state of POSS additives in the films. POSS with phenethyl groups (PhPOSS), which homogeneously dispersed into the films, resulted in the decrease of the glass transition temperature of PS and the enhancement of the dewetting of the films. POSS with a fluoroalkyl group (CpPOSS-R f) segregated to the film surface and showed the retardation of the dewetting by the decrease of the surface energy of the film. POSS with hydroxyl groups (CpPOSS-2OH) segregated to the film surface and film-substrate interface and led to the elimination of the dewetting, suggesting the importance of the interfacial segregation for the inhibition of dewetting. These results revealed the strong relationship between the dispersion state of the nanofillers and the dewetting of the nanofilled films.  相似文献

Hydrophobic films of polystyrene synthesized in bulk (PS) and by emulsion polymerization in the presence of the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (PS-CTAB) or the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (PS-SDS) were characterized by means of ellipsometry, contact angle measurements, and atomic force microscopy. Thin (approximately 65 nm) and thick (approximately 300 nm) films were spin-coated on hydrophilic silicon wafers. PS films presented scarcely tiny holes, while PS-CTAB and PS-SDS films presented holes and protuberances. The former were attributed to dewetting effects and the latter to surfactant clusters. The films were exposed to water or to a 0.1 mol/L NaCl solution for 24 h. Ex situ measurements evidenced strong topographic alterations after the exposure to the fluid. A model based on the diffusion of water (or electrolyte) molecules to the polymer/silcon dioxide interface through holes or defects on the film edges was proposed to explain the appearance of wrinkles and protuberances. In situ ellipsometric measurements were performed and compared with simulations, which considered either a water layer between a polymer and a silcon dioxide layer or an air layer between a polymer and water (medium). In the case of thin PS films, the ellipsometric angles evidenced a very thin (0.5-1.0 nm) air layer between water and the PS films. Upon increasing the PS film thickness, no air layer could be observed by ellipsometry. Regardless of the thickness, the ellipsometric data obtained for PS-CTAB and PS-SDS films did not indicate the presence of an air layer between them and the aqueous media. The dramatic changes in the topography of PS, PS-CTAB, and PS-SDS after immersion in salt solution were explained with proposed models. From a practical point of view, this study is particularly relevant because many hydrophobic polymers are used as substrates for biomedical purposes, where the physiological ionic strength is 0.15 mol/L NaCl.  相似文献

Incorporation of a block copolymer into a thin polymer film is observed to alter both the rate and mechanism by which the film dewets from an immiscible polymer substrate. Films with little or no copolymer dewet by classical nucleation and growth of circular holes, and the dewetting rate decreases with increasing copolymer concentration. Increasing the copolymer content at constant film thickness generates copolymer micelles that adsorb/aggregate along the polymer/polymer interface and promote nonclassical dewetting fluctuations similar in appearance to spinodal dewetting. At higher copolymer concentrations, dewetting proceeds after a lengthy induction period by the nucleation and growth of flower-shaped holes suggestive of film pinning or viscous fingering. Atomic force microscopy of the polymer/polymer interface after removal of the top film by selective dissolution reveals substantial structural development due to copolymer self-assembly.  相似文献

Thin films of fluids are playing a leading role in countless natural and industrial processes. Here we study the stability and dewetting dynamics of viscoelastic polymer thin films. The dewetting of polystyrene close to the glass transition reveals unexpected features: asymmetric rims collecting the dewetted liquid and logarithmic growth laws that we explain by considering the nonlinear velocity dependence of friction at the fluid/solid interface and by evoking residual stresses within the film. Systematically varying the time so that films were stored below the glass-transition temperature, we studied simultaneously the probability for film rupture and the dewetting dynamics at early stages. Both approaches proved independently the significance of residual stresses arising from the fast solvent evaporation associated with the spin-coating process. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, we describe the surface-assisted photoalignment of discotic liquid crystals (DLCs) on thin films of photo-cross-linkable polymers with cinnamoyl moieties as the side chains. Oblique irradiation of the polymer thin films with nonpolarized UV light at 313 nm brought about inclined orientation of the cinnamoyl residues as a result of their direction-selective photoisomerization and photodimerization. The DLC molecules on the photoirradiated polymer films were aligned in a tilted hybrid manner. This means that the DLC directors are continuously altered from the substrate to the DLC film surface so as to minimize the elastic free energy. Interestingly, we found that the tilted direction of aligned DLC molecules is clearly influenced by the chemical structures of the cinnamate-containing polymers. When a poly(vinyl cinnamate) thin film was obliquely exposed to nonpolarized UV light, the DLCs were inclined to the direction opposite to the UV light propagation. In a keen contrast, the thin film of poly(methacrylate)s tethering cinnamoyl groups, which was obliquely exposed to nonpolarized UV light in advance, provided the tilting DLC direction in parallel with the light propagation. The results were supported by tilted orientation of calamitic (rod-shaped) liquid crystal on the obliquely irradiated polymer films. Such photoalignment behavior of the DLCs can be rationalized by anchoring balance between intermolecular interaction of the DLC molecules with the photodimers of polymer films and those with the remaining E-isomers of cinnamoyl side chains at the film interface. The present technique of DLC photoalignment opens promising ways not only to understand anisotropic physical properties of DLCs, but also to design and fabricate novel nanodevices for photonics and electronics applications.  相似文献

During preparation of very thin polymer belnd films from a solution of polymers, the phase‐separated structures which are quite different from that observed for the bulk blend film was observed. From atomic force microscopic(AFM) observation, it is concluded that the surface undulation, which reflects the phase separated morphology of the blend system, is present. In the case of (polystyrene(PS)/poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA)) blend system, a large influence of end‐group chemistry on the surface morphology was observed. The phase identification of the (rubbery polymer/glassy polymer) binary blend thin films was successfully achieved by scanning vioscoelasticity microsopy(SVM).  相似文献

A simple technique for patterning proteins utilizing dewetted polystyrene (PS) droplets is demonstrated. A polystyrene thin film was spin coated on a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) silane-modified surface. As the PS film dewets from the surface, upon annealing, to form droplets, the PEG-silane-modified surface is exposed, which retains its capability to resist protein adsorption, and the PS droplets allow the selective adsorption of proteins. In contrast to the undewetted flat PS film, the droplet surface had a greater amount of adsorbed proteins. Atomic force microscopy scans reveal that the roughness of the droplet surface is higher, and a multilayer of proteins results on the droplet surface. Moreover, micro- and nanoscale droplet patterns can easily be achieved by tuning the thickness of PS thin films. Because dewetting approaches for generating ordered dewetting droplets have been successfully generated by others, those approaches could be easily combined with this technique to fabricate ordered protein patterns.  相似文献

Isocyanate-treated graphite oxides(i GOs) were well-dispersed into the polystyrene(PS) thin films and formed a novel network structure. With control in fabrication, an i GOs-web layer was horizontally embedded near the surface of the films and thus formed a composite slightly doped by i GOs. This work demonstrated that the i GOs network can remarkably depress the dewetting process in the polymer matrix of the composite, while dewetting often leads to rupture of polymer films and is considered as a major practical limit in using polymeric materials above their glass transition temperatures(Tg). Via annealing the 50–120 nm thick composite and associated neat PS films at temperatures ranging from 35 °C to 70 °C above Tg, surface morphology evolution of the films was monitored by atomic force microscopy(AFM). The i GOs-doped PS exhibited excellent thermal stability, i.e., the number of dewetting holes was greatly reduced and the long-term hole growth was fairly restricted. In contrast, the neat PS film showed serious surface fluctuation and a final rupture induced by ordinary dewetting. The method developed in this work may pave a road to reinforce thin polymer films and enhance their thermal stability, in order to meet requirements by technological advances.  相似文献
