Elastic deformations induced by an electric field in homeotropic nematic layers with finite anchoring energy were studied numerically. A nematic material possessing flexoelectric properties and characterized by a positive dielectric anisotropy was considered. The ionic space charge and the ion transport across the layer were taken into account. The director orientation, the electric field strength and the ion concentrations were calculated as functions of the coordinate normal to the layer. The calculations show that the electric field distribution, which determines the form of the deformations, is influenced by the ionic current and therefore depends on the ionic content and on the properties of the electrodes. Several types of deformations were distinguished. When the electrode contacts are well conducting or when the ionic content is low, the threshold voltage is very close to the value U f valid for an insulating nematic. When the electrodes are poorly conducting or blocking at high ion concentration, the threshold voltage decreases much below U f. At moderate ion concentrations, i.e. between 1019 and 1020 m?3, two different behaviours were found depending on the sign of the sum of flexoelectric coefficients e 11+e 33. In the case of e 11+e 33<0, the threshold voltage decreases with the ionic content; in the case of e 11+e 33>0, the deformations occur in two separate voltage regimes. They arise above a certain threshold voltage, disappear at some higher voltage and reappear at an even higher threshold.  相似文献

High-field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS) separates ions at atmospheric pressure based on the difference in the mobility of an ion in a strong electric field and in a weak electric field. This field-dependent mobility of an ion is reflected in the compensation voltage (CV) at which the ion is transmitted through FAIMS at an applied asymmetric waveform dispersion voltage (DV). In this report, we show that experimental CV peak shapes using dome tipped inner electrode FAIMS prototypes with inner/outer electrode radii of: (1) 0.2/0.4 cm and (2) 0.4/0.6 cm are a function of the longitudinal position of the inner electrode. Varying the longitudinal position of the inner electrode modifies the electric fields between the surfaces of the hemispherical shaped inner electrode and the outer electrode in the vicinity of the ion outlet. In this region the position-dependent electric field strength (E/N) effectively forms a second tandem FAIMS analyzer region having differing ion separation properties. The final tandem FAIMS separation is the intersection of the CV windows of these two differing FAIMS separations and, therefore, the peak width in the CV scan is dependent on the longitudinal tip displacement (LTD) of the inner electrode. CV scans are shown for a LTD range of 0.14 to 0.4 cm. These scans illustrate that it is possible to control the FAIMS resolution (CV/peak width) from about 1 for the 0.2/0.4 cm electrode set at intermediate longitudinal position to over 10 at the narrowest distance between the inner electrode and the ion outlet.  相似文献

High‐field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS) is an ion‐filtering technique recently adapted for use with liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) to remove interferences during analysis of complex matrices. This is the first systematic study of a series of singly charged tetraalkylammonium ions by FAIMS‐MS. The compensation voltage (CV) is the DC offset of the waveform which permits the ion to emerge from FAIMS and it was determined for each member of the series under various conditions. The electrospray ionization conditions explored included spray voltage, vaporizer temperature, and sheath and auxiliary gas pressure. The FAIMS conditions explored included carrier gas flow rate, electrode temperature and composition of the carrier gas. Optimum desolvation was achieved using sufficient carrier gas (flow rate ≥2 L/min) to ensure stable response. Low‐mass ions (m/z 100–200) are more susceptible to changes in electrode temperature and gas composition than high mass ions (m/z 200–700). As a result of this study, ions are reliably analyzed using standard FAIMS conditions (dispersion voltage ?5000 V, carrier gas flow rate 3 L/min, 50% helium/50%nitrogen, inner electrode temperature 70°C and outer electrode temperature 90°C). Variation of FAIMS conditions may be of great use for the separation of very low mass tetraalkylammonium (TAA) ions from other TAA ions. The FAIMS conditions do not appear to have a major effect on higher mass ions. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Cylindrical geometry high-field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS) focuses and separates gas-phase ions at atmospheric pressure and room (or elevated) temperature. Addition of helium to a nitrogen-based separation medium offers significant advantages for FAIMS including improved resolution, selectivity and sensitivity. Aside from gas composition, ion transmission through FAIMS is governed by electric field strength (E/N) that is determined by the applied voltage, the analyzer gap width, atmospheric pressure and electrode temperature. In this study, the analyzer width of a cylindrical FAIMS device is varied from 2.5 to 1.25 mm to achieve average electric field strengths as high as 187.5 Townsend (Td). At these electric fields, the performance of FAIMS in an N(2) environment is dramatically improved over a commercial system that uses an analyzer width of 2.5 mm in 1:1 N(2) /He. At fields of 162 Td using electrodes at room temperature, the average effective temperature for the [M+2H](2+) ion of angiotensin II reaches 365 K. This has a dramatic impact on the curtain gas flow rate, resulting in lower optimum flows and reduced turbulence in the ion inlet. The use of narrow analyzer widths in a N(2) carrier gas offers previously unattainable baseline resolution of the [M+2H](2+) and [M+3H](3+) ions of angiotensin II. Comparisons of absolute ion current with FAIMS to conventional electrospray ionization (ESI) are as high as 77% with FAIMS versus standard ESI-MS.  相似文献

High‐field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS) separates ions by utilizing the characteristics of nonlinear ion mobility at high and low electric fields. Accurate ion discrimination depends on the precise solution of nonlinear relationships and is essential for accurate identification of ion species for applications. So far, all the nonlinear relationships of ion mobility obtained are based at low electric fields (E/N <65 Td). Microchip FAIMS (μ‐FAIMS) with small dimensions has high electric field up to E/N = 250 Td, making the approximation methods and conclusions for nonlinear relationships inappropriate for these systems. In this paper, we deduced nonlinear functions based on the first principle and a general model. Furthermore we considered the hydrodynamics of gas flow through microchannels. We then calculated the specific alpha coefficients for cocaine, morphine, HMX, TNT and RDX, respectively, based on their FAIMS spectra measured by μ‐FAIMS system at ultra‐high fields up to 250 Td. The results show that there is no difference in nonlinear alpha functions obtained by the approximation and new method at low field (<120 Td), but the error induced by using approximation method increases monotonically with the increase in field, and could be as much as 30% at a field of 250 Td. A new electrospray source design is introduced by having an extractor electrode placed at 1 to 2 mm behind the emitter tip. The extractor was integrated into the sprayer body as a single device. An insulating tube was used to isolate the emitter from the extractor and to deliver the sheath gas for the electrospray. The electric field strength at the emitter was primarily determined by the relative position and the potential between the needle and the extractor; therefore, the spraying condition was insusceptible to the change of sprayer position or orientation with respect to the ion sampling inlet. Such design allowed the use of much lower operating voltage and facilitated the optimization of sprayer position by keeping the electric field parameter constant. Using an emitter capillary of 150 and 310 μm in inner and outer diameters, strong ion signal could still be acquired with 2‐kV emitter potential even if the distance between the emitter and ion inlet was extended to >70 mm. Charge reduction of protein ions using 2 extractor‐based electrosprays of opposite emitter polarities was also demonstrated.  相似文献

A high voltage asymmetric waveform generator for FAIMS   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
High field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS) has been used increasingly in recent years as an additional method of ion separation and selection before mass spectrometry. The FAIMS electrodes are relatively simple to design and fabricate for laboratories wishing to implement their own FAIMS designs. However, construction of the electronics apparatus needed to produce the required high magnitude asymmetric electric field oscillating at a frequency of several hundred kilohertz is not trivial. Here we present an entirely custom-built electronics setup capable of supplying the required waveforms and voltages. The apparatus is relatively simple and inexpensive to implement. We also present data acquired on this system demonstrating the use of FAIMS as a gas-phase ion filter interface to an ion trap mass spectrometer.  相似文献

The halo ion trap (IT) was modified to allow for axial ion ejection through slits machined in the ceramic electrode plates rather than ejecting ions radially to a center hole in the plates. This was done to preserve a more uniform electric field for ion analysis. An in-depth evaluation of the higher-order electric field components in the trap was also performed to improve resolution. The linear, cubic and quintic (5th order) electric field components for each electrode ring inside the IT were calculated using SIMION (SIMION version 8, Scientific Instrument Services, Ringoes, NJ, USA) simulations. The preferred electric fields with higher-order components were implemented experimentally by first calculating the potential on each electrode ring of the halo IT and then soldering appropriate capacitors between rings without changing the original trapping plate design. The performance of the halo IT was evaluated for 1% to 7% cubic electric field (A 4/A 2) component. A best resolution of 280 (mm) for the 51-Da fragment ion of benzene was observed with 5% cubic electric field component. Confirming results were obtained using toluene, dichloromethane, and heptane as test analytes.  相似文献

High-field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS) separates ions at atmospheric pressure and room temperature based on the difference of the mobility of ions in strong electric fields and weak electric fields. This field-dependent mobility of an ion is reflected in the compensation voltage (CV) at which the ion is transmitted through FAIMS, at a given asymmetric waveform dispersion voltage (DV). Experimental CV, relative peak ion intensity, and peak width data were compared for three FAIMS prototypes with concentric cylindrical electrodes having inner/outer electrode radii of: (1) 0.4/0.6 cm, (2) 0.8/1.0 cm, and (3) 1.2/1.4 cm. The annular analyzer space was 0.2 cm wide in each case. A finite-difference numerical computation method is described for evaluation of peak shapes and widths in a CV spectrum collected using cylindrical geometry FAIMS devices. Simulation of the radial distribution of the ion density in the FAIMS analyzer is based upon calculation of diffusion, electric fields, and the electric fields introduced by coulombic ion-ion repulsion. Excellent agreement between experimental and calculated peak shapes were obtained for electrodes of wide diameter and for ions transmitted at low CV.  相似文献

A program for Monte Carlo simulation of ion transport in non-linear ion mobility spectrometry, also known as field asymmetric ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS) or differential mobility spectrometry (DMS), has been developed. Simulations are based on elastic collisions between the ions and the gas particles, and take into account the effects of flow dynamics and asymmetric electric fields. Using this program, the separation and diffusion of the ions moving in a planar DMS filtration gap are demonstrated. Ion focusing in a cylindrical filtration gap is also confirmed. A characteristic compensation voltage is found to provide insight for understanding separation in non-linear ion mobility spectrometry. The simulation program is used to study the characteristics of non-linear ion mobility spectrometry, the effect of the carrier gas flow, and the dependence of the compensation voltage and nonlinear mobility coefficient (α) on the applied asymmetric electric field.  相似文献

A corona discharge (CD) ionization source was prepared for a planar high-field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometer (FAIMS). The effects of discharge current and discharge distance on ionization efficiency were investigated; and the electric field dependence of the ion injection in the reaction region was studied. The results showed that the discharge current of CD source had good linearity with the intensity of reactant ion peak (RIP), and the RIP intensity increased to a stable level at the discharge distance of >5 mm. An injection electrode was introduced to improve the ionization efficiency. A square-wave voltage applied to the electrode was found to provide optimal performance of ion injection and utilization. The operating parameters of the CD-FAIMS were optimized to achieve trace level detection of dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) sample. The detection limit for DMMP was 0.5 µg/m3.  相似文献

The underpotential deposition of copper onto polycrystalline rhodium was studied as a function of the degree of oxidation of the electrode surface in acidic media using potentiodynamic techniques. Surface oxidation of the rhodium electrode was carried out using a triangular sweep potential between E L (lower limit) and E U (upper limit: 0.94≤E U≤1.4 V). Cu electrodeposition was performed at the same time as the total or partial reduction of the oxidized species. The surface oxides produced at E U≤1.09 V were completely reduced during Cu electrodeposition. In this case, the potentiodynamic I-E patterns for oxidative dissolution of Cu were characterized by three anodic peaks located at 0.41 V (peak I), 0.47 V (peak II) and 0.59 V (peak III) and the coverage degree by Cu, θCu, was on the order of a monolayer. Surface oxides produced at E U>1.09 V were partially reduced during the copper electrodeposition. In this case, the I-E profiles exhibited only two anodic peaks (II and III) and θCu was <1. The Rh-oxygen species that remain on the electrode surface block the active sites of lower energy and modify the binding energy of strongly adsorbed Cu. Electronic Publication  相似文献

Abstract

Research into organic field effect transistors (OFETs) has made significant advances—both scientifically and technologically—during the last decade, and the first products will soon enter the market. Printed electronic circuits using organic resistors, diodes and transistors may become cheap alternatives to silicon-based systems, especially in large-area applications. A key parameter for device operation, besides long term stability, is the reproducibility of the current–voltage behavior, which may be affected by hysteresis phenomena. Hysteresis effects are often observed in organic transistors during sweeps of the gate voltage (V GS). This hysteresis can originate in various ways, but comparative scientific investigations are rare and a comprehensive picture of “hysteresis phenomena” in OFETs is still missing. This review provides an overview of the physical effects that cause hysteresis and discusses the importance of such effects in OFETs in a comparative manner.  相似文献

Elastic deformations of homeotropic nematic liquid crystal layers subjected to a DC electric field were studied numerically in order to determine their development under increasing voltage. Both signs of the dielectric anisotropy, Δ?, and of the sum of flexo-electric coefficients, e 11 e 33, were considered, as were also low, moderate and high ion concentrations. The electrical properties of the layer are described in terms of a weak electrolyte model. Quasi-blocking electrode contacts and a finite surface anchoring strength were adopted. Director orientation, the electric potential and the ion concentrations were each calculated as a function of the coordinate normal to the layer. The director distributions turned out to depend not only on the sign of Δ? but also on the sign of e 11 e 33, due to the difference in the mobility of anions and cations. The importance of ion content was also confirmed.  相似文献

Recent reports describing enhanced performance when using gas additives in a DMS device (planar electrodes) have indicated that comparable benefits are not attainable using FAIMS (cylindrical electrodes), owing to the non-homogeneous electric fields within the analyzer region. In this study, a FAIMS system (having cylindrical electrodes) was modified to allow for controlled delivery of gas additives. An experiment was carried out that illustrates the important distinction between gas modifiers present as unregulated contaminants and modifiers added in a controlled manner. The effect of contamination was simulated by adjusting the ESI needle position to promote incomplete desolvation, thereby permitting ESI solvent vapor into the FAIMS analyzer region, causing signal instability and irreproducible CV values. However, by actively controlling the delivery of the gas modifier, reproducible CV spectra were obtained. The effects of adding different gas modifiers were examined using 15 positive ions having mass-to-charge (m/z) values between 90 and 734. Significant improvements in peak capacity and increases in ion transmission were readily attained by adding acetonitrile vapor, even at trace levels (≤0.1%). Increases in signal intensity were greatest for the low m/z ions; for the six lowest molecular weight species, signal intensities increased by ~10- to over 100-fold compared with using nitrogen without gas additives, resulting in equivalent or better signal intensities compared with ESI without FAIMS. These results confirm that analytical benefits derived from the addition of gas modifiers reported with a uniform electric field (DMS) also are observed using a non-homogenous electric field (FAIMS) in the analyser region.

Spontaneous generation of electrical voltage U was found for the perovskite-like single crystal of Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3, wherein the charge and orbital orderings occur at T CO = 240 K and the antiferromagnetic one occurs at the Neel point T N = 174 K. With decreasing the temperature, the U value increases first slowly (in the temperature range of 300 K-T CO) and then more rapidly (T CO-T N). Starting from T N, U increases exponentially and, at 85 K, reaches the value of 115 mV (in the ab plane) and 6.5 mV (along the c axis). The magnetic field has a different effect on the U value in different temperature ranges: in the temperature range of 85–130 K, it decreases U and, in the range of 130–240 K, increases U. The spontaneous voltage is thought to be caused by the existence of ferromagnetic and charge-orbital-ordered clusters of different topology in the sample. The latter clusters have own features and their structure are described by the non-centrosymmetric space group P21 nm.  相似文献

A method for the confinement of ions at 760 Torr and room temperature is described. We have recently shown that a cylindrical-geometry high-field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometer (FAIMS), which utilizes an ion separation technique based on the change in ion mobility at high electric fields, focuses ions in two dimensions. This article describes a FAIMS device in which the focusing is extended to three dimensions (i.e. ion trap). Characterization of the ion trap was carried out using a laboratory-constructed time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The half-life of a m/z 380 ion in the trap was determined to be 5 ms.  相似文献

We present a detailed study of the electric mechanism of a thin poly(o‐methoxyaniline) (POMA) field‐effect transistor. The device was prepared using Al‐Si/SiO2/(interdigitated gold lines array)/POMA structure as the gate electrode, insulating layer, source‐drain electrodes, and active layer, respectively. A model is presented for the electrical characteristics of such a device that encompasses the disordered properties of the POMA, the source‐drain electrical‐field dependence of hole mobility, and the carrier and mobility gradients in directions perpendicular to the polymer–oxide interface. The fittings of source‐drain current versus source‐drain voltage, having as parameters the gate voltage, is in good agreement with the experimental data, and the dependence of both the carrier saturation velocity and of the carrier mobility with the gate voltage are obtained. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Electroporation is well known to depend non-linearly on the magnitude and duration of the change ΔU(t) in transmembrane voltage. In the case of cell suspension experiments, an electric field Ee(t) within the electrolyte causes ΔU(t), which is governed by both the size and shape of a cell, and also by Ee(t). It is therefore important to determine the magnitude and time dependence of the electric field to which cells are actually exposed in electroporation experiments. This can be significantly different from the nominal field En, which is calculated by using electrode voltages and geometries alone. Throughout we used single, nominally exponential pulses with time constants τpulse ranging from about 0.6 to 5 ms and found that Ee was always less than En. In order to determine the actual electric field pulse, we measured the voltage across the electrodes, the current through the cuvette, the temperature rise of the pulsing medium, and the voltage across two special electrodes placed within the cuvette. From these measurements we calculated the field strength inside the cuvette using two different methods. In addition, we compared the measured temperature rise with that expected from the electrical power dissipation. In some cases there was much larger (“anomalous”) heating, due to interfacial electrochemical heat production; for one pulsing solution Te(t) was about 30 K larger than expected. These effects are important for experiments aimed at elucidating the electroporation mechanism, comparing results obtained under different conditions, and guiding applications.  相似文献
