Redox‐inactive metal ions and Brønsted acids that function as Lewis acids play pivotal roles in modulating the redox reactivity of metal–oxygen intermediates, such as metal–oxo and metal–peroxo complexes. The mechanisms of the oxidative C?H bond cleavage of toluene derivatives, sulfoxidation of thioanisole derivatives, and epoxidation of styrene derivatives by mononuclear nonheme iron(IV)–oxo complexes in the presence of triflic acid (HOTf) and Sc(OTf)3 have been unified as rate‐determining electron transfer coupled with binding of Lewis acids (HOTf and Sc(OTf)3) by iron(III)–oxo complexes. All logarithms of the observed second‐order rate constants of Lewis acid‐promoted oxidative C?H bond cleavage, sulfoxidation, and epoxidation reactions of iron(IV)–oxo complexes exhibit remarkably unified correlations with the driving forces of proton‐coupled electron transfer (PCET) and metal ion‐coupled electron transfer (MCET) in light of the Marcus theory of electron transfer when the differences in the formation constants of precursor complexes were taken into account. The binding of HOTf and Sc(OTf)3 to the metal–oxo moiety has been confirmed for MnIV–oxo complexes. The enhancement of the electron‐transfer reactivity of metal–oxo complexes by binding of Lewis acids increases with increasing the Lewis acidity of redox‐inactive metal ions. Metal ions can also bind to mononuclear nonheme iron(III)–peroxo complexes, resulting in acceleration of the electron‐transfer reduction but deceleration of the electron‐transfer oxidation. Such a control on the reactivity of metal–oxygen intermediates by binding of Lewis acids provides valuable insight into the role of Ca2+ in the oxidation of water to dioxygen by the oxygen‐evolving complex in photosystem II.  相似文献

We have studied the charge‐transfer‐induced deactivation of nπ* excited triplet states of benzophenone derivatives by O2(3Σ), and the charge‐transfer‐induced deactivation of O2(1Δg) by ground‐state benzophenone derivatives in CH2Cl2 and CCl4. The rate constants for both processes are described by Marcus electron‐transfer theory, and are compared with the respective data for a series of biphenyl and naphthalene derivatives, the triplet states of which have ππ* configuration. The results demonstrate that deactivation of the locally excited nπ* triplets occurs by local charge‐transfer and non‐charge‐transfer interactions of the oxygen molecule with the ketone carbonyl group. Relatively large intramolecular reorganization energies show that this quenching process involves large geometry changes in the benzophenone molecule, which are related to favorable Franck‐Condon factors for the deactivation of ketone‐oxygen complexes to the ground‐state molecules. This leads to large rate constants in the triplet channel, which are responsible for the low efficiencies of O2(1Δg) formation observed with nπ* excited ketones. Compared with the deactivation of ππ* triplets, the non‐charge‐transfer process is largely enhanced, and charge‐transfer interactions are less important. The deactivation of singlet oxygen by ground‐state benzophenone derivatives proceeds via interactions of O2(1Δg) with the Ph rings.  相似文献

Free energy profiles for the proton transfer reactions in hydrogen‐bonded complex of phenol with trimethylamine in methyl chloride solvent are studied with the reference interaction site model self‐consistent field method. The reactions in both the electronic ground and excited states are considered. The second‐order Møller‐Plesset perturbation (MP) theory or the second‐order multireference MP theory is used to evaluate the effect of the dynamical electron correlation on the free energy profiles. The free energy surface in the ground state shows a discrepancy with the experimental results for the related hydrogen‐bonded complexes. To resolve this discrepancy, the effects of chloro‐substitutions in phenol are examined, and its importance in stabilizing the ionic form is discussed. The temperature effect is also studied. In contrast to the ground state, the ππ* excited state of phenol–trimethylamine complex exhibits the proton transfer reaction with a low barrier. The reaction is almost thermoneutral. This is attributed to the reduction of proton affinity of phenol by the ππ* electronic excitation. We further examine the possibility of the electron–proton–coupled transfer in the ππ* state through the surface crossing with the charge transfer type πσ* state. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A supramolecular dyad, BP‐(amidinium‐carboxylate)‐NBD is constructed, in which benzophenone (BP) and norbornadiene (NBD) are connected via an amidinium‐carboxylate salt bridge. The photophysical and photochemical properties of the assembled BP‐(amidinium‐carboxylate)‐NBD dyad are examined. The phosphorescence of the BP chromophore is efficiently quenched by the NBD group in BP‐(amidinium‐carboxylate)‐NBD via the salt bridge. Time‐resolved spectroscopy measurements indicate that the lifetime of the BP triplet state in BP‐(amidinium‐carboxylate)‐NBD is shortened due to the quenching by the NBD group. Selective excitation of the BP chromophore results in isomerization of the NBD group to quadricyclane (QC). All of these observations suggest that the triplet–triplet energy transfer occurs efficiently in the BP‐(amidinium‐carboxylate)‐NBD salt bridge system. The triplet–triplet energy transfer process proceeds with efficiencies of approximately 0.87, 0.98 and the rate constants 1.8×103 s?1, and 1.3×107 s?1 at 77 K and room temperature, respectively. The mechanism for the triplet–triplet energy transfer is proposed to proceed via a “through‐bond” electron exchange process, and the non‐covalent bonds amidinium‐carboxylate salt bridge can mediate the triplet–triplet energy transfer process effectively for photochemical conversion.  相似文献

A cooperative catalytic system established by the combination of an iron salt and a chiral Brønsted acid has proven to be effective in the asymmetric Friedel–Crafts alkylation of indoles with β‐aryl α′‐hydroxy enones. Good to excellent yields and enatioselectivities were observed for a variety of α′‐hydroxy enones and indoles, particularly for the β‐aryl α′‐hydroxy enones bearing an electron‐withdrawing group at the para position of the phenyl ring (up to 90 % yield and 91 % ee). The proton of the chiral Brønsted acid, the Lewis acid activation site, as well as the inherent basic site for the hydrogen‐bonding interaction of the Brønsted acid are responsible for the high catalytic activities and enantioselectivities of the title reaction. A possible reaction mechanism was proposed. The key catalytic species in the catalytic system, the phosphate salt of FeIII, which was thought to be responsible for the high activity and good enantioselectivity, was then confirmed by ESIMS studies.  相似文献

Irreversible photooxidation based on N–O bond fragmentation is demonstrated for N‐methoxyheterocycles in both the singlet and triplet excited state manifolds. The energetic requirements for bond fragmentation are studied in detail. Bond fragmentation in the excited singlet manifold is possible for ππ* singlet states with energies significantly larger than the N–O bond dissociation energy of ca 55 kcal mol?1. For the * triplet states, N–O bond fragmentation does not occur in the excited state for orbital overlap and energetic reasons. Irreversible photooxidation occurs in the singlet states by bond fragmentation followed by electron transfer. Irreversible photooxidation occurs in the triplet states via bimolecular electron transfer to the donor followed by bond fragmentation. Using these two sensitization schemes, donors can be irreversibly oxidized with oxidation potentials ranging from ca 1.6–2.2 V vs SCE. The corresponding N‐ethylheterocycles are characterized as conventional reversible photooxidants in their triplet states. The utility of these sensitizers is demonstrated by irreversibly generating the guanosine radical cation in buffered aqueous solution.  相似文献

Photoinduced hydroxylation of neat deaerated benzene to phenol occurred under visible‐light irradiation of 2,3‐dichloro‐5,6‐dicyano‐p‐benzoquinone (DDQ), which acts as a super photooxidant in the presence of water. Photocatalytic solvent‐free hydroxylation of benzene derivatives with electron‐withdrawing substituents such as benzonitrile, nitrobenzene, and trifluoromethylbenzene used as neat solvents has been achieved for the first time by using DDQ as a super photooxidant to yield the corresponding phenol derivatives and 2,3‐dichloro‐5,6‐dicyanohydroquinone (DDQH2) in the presence of water under deaerated conditions. In the presence of dioxygen and tert‐butyl nitrite, the photocatalytic hydroxylation of neat benzene occurred with DDQ as a photocatalyst to produce phenol. The photocatalytic reactions are initiated by oxidation of benzene derivatives with the singlet and triplet excited states of DDQ to form the corresponding radical cations, which associate with benzene derivatives to produce the dimer radical cations, which were detected by the femto‐ and nanosecond laser flash photolysis measurements to clarify the photocatalytic reaction mechanisms. Radical cations of benzene derivatives react with water to yield the OH‐adduct radicals. On the other hand, DDQ . ? produced by the photoinduced electron transfer from benzene derivatives reacts with the OH‐adduct radicals to yield the corresponding phenol derivatives and DDQH2. DDQ is recovered by the reaction of DDQH2 with tert‐butyl nitrite when DDQ acts as a photocatalyst for the hydroxylation of benzene derivatives by dioxygen.  相似文献

The locations of Brønsted acid sites (BAS) in the channels of medium‐pore zeolites have a significant effect on the spontaneous ionization of para‐terphenyl (PP3) insofar as spatial constraints determine the stability of transition states and charge‐transfer complexes relevant to charge separation. The ionization rates and ionization yield values demonstrate that a strong synergy exists between the H+ polarization energy and spatial constraints imposed by the channel topology. Spectroscopic and modeling results show that PP3 incorporation, charge separation, charge transfer and charge recombination differ dramatically among zeolites with respect to channel structure (H‐FER, H‐MFI, H‐MOR) and BAS density in the channel. Compartmentalization of ejected electrons away from the initial site of ionization decreases dramatically the propensity for charge recombination. The main mode of PP3.+ decay is hole transfer to form AlO4H.+ ??? PP3 charge‐transfer complexes characterized by intense absorption in the visible range. According to the nonadiabatic electron‐transfer theory, the small reorganization energy in constrained channels explains the slow hole‐transfer rate.  相似文献

Hydrocarbon‐pool chemistry is important in methanol to olefins (MTO) conversion on acidic zeolite catalysts. The hydrocarbon‐pool (HP) species, such as methylbenzenes and cyclic carbocations, confined in zeolite channels during the reaction are essential in determining the reaction pathway. Herein, we experimentally demonstrate the formation of supramolecular reaction centers composed of organic hydrocarbon species and the inorganic zeolite framework in H‐ZSM‐5 zeolite by advanced 13C–27Al double‐resonance solid‐state NMR spectroscopy. Methylbenzenes and cyclic carbocations located near Brønsted acid/base sites form the supramolecular reaction centers in the zeolite channel. The internuclear spatial interaction/proximity between the 13C nuclei (associated with HP species) and the 27Al nuclei (associated with Brønsted acid/base sites) determines the reactivity of the HP species. The closer the HP species are to the zeolite framework Al, the higher their reactivity in the MTO reaction.  相似文献

Using time-resolved techniques of 337 and 248 nm laser flash photolysis, the photo physical and photochemical processes of riboflavin (RF, vitamin B2) were studied in detail in aqueous solution. The excited triplet state of riboflavin (3RF*) was produced with 337 nm laser, while under 248 nm irradiation, both3RF* and hydrated electron (eaq) formed from photoionization could be detected. Photobiological implications have been inferred on the basis of reactivity of3RF* including energy transfer, electron transfer and hydrogen abstraction. The RF·+ was generated by oxidation of SO4 ·-radical with the aim of confirming the results of photolysis.  相似文献

Commercial bioethanol can be readily converted into ethylene by a dehydration process using solid acids, such as Brønsted acidic H‐ZSM‐5 zeolites, and thus, it is an ideal candidate to replace petroleum and coal for the sustainable production of ethylene. Now, strong Lewis acidic extra‐framework three‐coordinate Al3+ species were introduced into H‐ZSM‐5 zeolites to improve their catalytic activity. Remarkably, Al3+ species working with Brønsted acid sites can accelerate ethanol dehydration at a much lower reaction temperature and shorten the unsteady‐state period within 1–2 h, compared to >9 h for those without Al3+ species, which can significantly enhance the ethanol dehydration efficiency and reduce the cost. The reaction mechanism, studied by solid‐state NMR, shows that strong Lewis acidic EFAl‐Al3+ species can collaborate with Brønsted acid sites and promote ethanol dehydration either directly or indirectly via an aromatics‐based cycle to produce ethylene.  相似文献

The mechanism of the SmI2‐mediated reduction of unactivated esters has been studied using a combination of kinetic, radical clocks and reactivity experiments. The kinetic data indicate that all reaction components (SmI2, amine, H2O) are involved in the rate equation and that electron transfer is facilitated by Brønsted base assisted deprotonation of water in the transition state. The use of validated cyclopropyl‐containing radical clocks demonstrates that the reaction occurs via fast, reversible first electron transfer, and that the electron transfer from simple Sm(II) complexes to aliphatic esters is rapid. Notably, the mechanistic details presented herein indicate that complexation between SmI2, H2O and amines affords a new class of structurally diverse, thermodynamically powerful reductants for efficient electron transfer to carboxylic acid derivatives as an attractive alternative to the classical hydride‐mediated reductions and as a source of acyl‐radical equivalents for C?C bond forming processes.  相似文献

A Brønsted acid enabled nickel‐catalyzed hydroalkenylation of aldehydes and styrene derivatives has been developed. The Brønsted acid acts as a proton shuttle to transfer a proton from the alkene to the aldehyde, thereby leading to an economical and byproduct‐free coupling. A series of synthetically useful allylic alcohols were obtained through one‐step reactions from readily available styrene derivatives and aliphatic aldehydes in up to 88 % yield and with high linear selectivity.  相似文献

The photoinitiated grafting of maleic anhydride (MAH) onto polypropylene with the use of benzophenone (BP) as the initiator has been investigated. In comparison with the process of thermally initiated grafting with peroxide as the initiator, photoinitiated grafting affords a higher grafting efficiency. The efficient photografting sensitized by BP can be explained by two possible mechanistic processes: the sensitization of the formation of the excited triplet state of MAH by BP and electron transfer followed by proton transfer between MAH and the benzopinacol radical, which may operate together. In the former case, the generated MAH excited triplet state abstracts a hydrogen from the polymer substrate to initiate grafting. A rate constant of 3.6 × 109 M ?1 s ?1 has been determined by laser flash photolysis for the process of quenching the excited triplet state of BP with ground‐state MAH. In comparison, the rate constant for the quenching of the excited triplet state of BP by hydrogen abstraction has been determined to be 4.1 × 105 M ?1 s ?1. In a study of photografting using a model compound, 2,4‐dimethylpentane, as a small‐molecule analogue of polypropylene, the loss of BP was significantly reduced upon the addition of MAH, and this is consistent with the proposed mechanistic processes. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An efficient catalytic one‐step conversion of benzene to phenol was achieved recently by selective photooxidation under mild conditions with 2,3‐dichloro‐5,6‐dicyano‐p‐benzoquinone (DDQ) as the photocatalyst. Herein, high‐level electronic structure calculations in the gas phase and in acetonitrile solution are reported to explore the underlying mechanism. The initially populated 1ππ* state of DDQ can relax efficiently through a nearby dark 1nπ* doorway state to the 3ππ* state of DDQ, which is found to be the precursor state involved in the initial intermolecular electron transfer from benzene to DDQ. The subsequent triplet‐state reaction between DDQ radical anions, benzene radical cations, and water is computed to be facile. The formed DDQH and benzene‐OH radicals can undergo T1→S0 intersystem crossing and concomitant proton‐coupled electron transfer (PCET) to generate the products DDQH2 and phenol. Two of the four considered nonadiabatic pathways involve an orientation‐dependent triplet PCET process, followed by intersystem crossing to the ground state (S0). The other two first undergo a nonadiabatic T1→S0 transition to produce a zwitterionic S0 complex, followed by a barrierless proton transfer. The present theoretical study identifies novel types of nonadiabatic PCET processes and provides detailed mechanistic insight into DDQ‐catalyzed photooxidation.  相似文献

Understanding the nature of active sites in metal‐supported catalysts is of great importance towards establishing their structure–property relationships. The outstanding catalytic performance of metal‐supported catalysts is frequently ascribed to the synergic effect of different active sites, which is however not well spectroscopically characterized. Herein, we report the direct detection of surface Zn species and 1H–67Zn internuclear interaction between Zn2+ ions and Brønsted acid sites on Zn‐modified ZSM‐5 zeolites by high‐field solid‐state NMR spectroscopy. The observed promotion of C?H bond activation of methane is rationalized by the enhanced Brønsted acidity generated by synergic effects arising from the spatial proximity/interaction between Zn2+ ions and Brønsted acidic protons. The concentration of synergic active sites is determined by 1H–67Zn double‐resonance solid‐state NMR spectroscopy.  相似文献

Two pyridylphenols with intramolecular hydrogen bonds between the phenol and pyridine units have been synthesized, characterized crystallographically, and investigated by cyclic voltammetry and UV/Vis spectroscopy. Reductive quenching of the triplet metal‐to‐ligand charge‐transfer excited state of the [Re(CO)3(phen)(py)]+ complex (phen=1,10‐phenanthroline, py=pyridine) by the two pyridylphenols and two reference phenol molecules is investigated by steady‐state and time‐resolved luminescence spectroscopy, as well as by transient absorption spectroscopy. Stern–Volmer analysis of the luminescence quenching data provides rate constants for the bimolecular excited‐state quenching reactions. H/D kinetic isotope effects for the pyridylphenols are on the order of 2.0, and the bimolecular quenching reactions are up to 100 times faster with the pyridylphenols than with the reference phenols. This observation is attributed to the markedly less positive oxidation potentials of the pyridylphenols with respect to the reference phenols (≈0.5 V), which in turn is caused by proton coupling of the phenol oxidation process. Transient absorption spectroscopy provides unambiguous evidence for the photogeneration of phenoxyl radicals, that is, the overall photoreaction is clearly a proton‐coupled electron‐transfer process.  相似文献

We report a catalytic, light‐driven method for the intramolecular hydroetherification of unactivated alkenols to furnish cyclic ether products. These reactions occur under visible‐light irradiation in the presence of an IrIII‐based photoredox catalyst, a Brønsted base catalyst, and a hydrogen‐atom transfer (HAT) co‐catalyst. Reactive alkoxy radicals are proposed as key intermediates, generated by direct homolytic activation of alcohol O?H bonds through a proton‐coupled electron‐transfer mechanism. This method exhibits a broad substrate scope and high functional‐group tolerance, and it accommodates a diverse range of alkene substitution patterns. Results demonstrating the extension of this catalytic system to carboetherification reactions are also presented.  相似文献

A series of mesoporous Nb and Nb‐W oxides were employed as highly active solid acid catalysts for the conversion of glucose to 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF ). The results of solid state 31P MAS NMR spectroscopy with adsorbed trimethylphosphine as probe molecule show that the addition of W in niobium oxide increases the number of Brønsted acid sites and decreases the number of Lewis acid sites. The catalytic performance for Nb‐W oxides varied with the ratio of Brønsted to Lewis acid sites and high glucose conversion was observed over Nb5W5 and Nb7W3 oxides with high ratios of Brønsted to Lewis acid sites. All Nb‐W oxides show a relatively high selectivity of HMF , whereas no HMF forms over sulfuric acid due to its pure Brønsted acidity. The results indicate fast isomerization of glucose to fructose over Lewis acid sites followed by dehydration of fructose to HMF over Brønsted acid sites. Moreover, comparing to the reaction occurred in aqueous media, the 2‐butanol/H2O system enhances the HMF selectivity and stabilizes the activity of the catalysts which gives the highest HMF selectivity of 52% over Nb7W3 oxide. The 2‐butanol/H2O catalytic system can also be employed in conversion of sucrose, achieving HMF selectivity of 46% over Nb5W5 oxide.  相似文献
