Herein, the effect of the alkali cation (Li+, Na+, K+, and Cs+) in alkaline electrolytes with and without Fe impurities is investigated for enhancing the activity of nickel oxyhydroxide (NiOOH) for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Cyclic voltammograms show that Fe impurities have a significant catalytic effect on OER activity; however, both under purified and unpurified conditions, the trend in OER activity is Cs+ > Na+ > K+ > Li+, suggesting an intrinsic cation effect of the OER activity on Fe‐free Ni oxyhydroxide. In situ surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), shows this cation dependence is related to the formation of superoxo OER intermediate (NiOO?). The electrochemically active surface area, evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), is not influenced significantly by the cation. We postulate that the cations interact with the Ni?OO? species leading to the formation of NiOO??M+ species that is stabilized better by bigger cations (Cs+). This species would then act as the precursor to O2 evolution, explaining the higher activity.  相似文献

NiFe layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been denoted as benchmark non-noble-metal electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, for laminates of NiFe LDHs, the edge sites are active, but the basal plane is inert, leading to underutilization as catalysts for the OER. Herein, for the first time, light and electron-deficient Li ions are intercalated into the basal plane of NiFe LDHs. The results of theoretical calculations and experiments both showed that electrons would be transferred from near Ni2+ to the surroundings of Li+, resulting in electron-deficient properties of the Ni sites, which would function as “electron-hungry” sites, to enhance surface adsorption of electron-rich oxygen-containing groups, which would enhance the effective activity for the OER. As demonstrated by the catalytic performance, the Li−NiFe LDH electrodes showed an ultralow overpotential of only 298 mV at 50 mA cm−2, which was lower than that of 347 mV for initial NiFe LDHs and lower than that of 373 mV for RuO2. Reasonable intercalation adjustment effectively activates laminated Ni2+ sites and constructs the electron-deficient structure to enhance its electrocatalytic activity, which sheds light on the functional treatment of catalytic materials.  相似文献

Nickel iron oxyhydroxide is the benchmark catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline medium. Whereas the presence of Fe ions is essential to the high activity, the functions of Fe are currently under debate. Using oxygen isotope labeling and operando Raman spectroscopic experiments, we obtain turnover frequencies (TOFs) of both Ni and Fe sites for a series of Ni and NiFe layered double hydroxides (LDHs), which are structurally defined samples of the corresponding oxyhydroxides. The Fe sites have TOFs 20–200 times higher than the Ni sites such that at an Fe content of 4.7 % and above the Fe sites dominate the catalysis. Higher Fe contents lead to larger structural disorder of the NiOOH host. A volcano-type correlation was found between the TOFs of Fe sites and the structural disorder of NiOOH. Our work elucidates the origin of the Fe-dependent activity of NiFe LDH, and suggests structural ordering as a strategy to improve OER catalysts.  相似文献

Exploring materials with regulated local structures and understanding how the atomic motifs govern the reactivity and durability of catalysts are a critical challenge for designing advanced catalysts. Herein we report the tuning of the local atomic structure of nickel–iron layered double hydroxides (NiFe‐LDHs) by partially substituting Ni2+ with Fe2+ to introduce Fe‐O‐Fe moieties. These Fe2+‐containing NiFe‐LDHs exhibit enhanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity with an ultralow overpotential of 195 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm?2, which is among the best OER catalytic performance to date. In‐situ X‐ray absorption, Raman, and electrochemical analysis jointly reveal that the Fe‐O‐Fe motifs could stabilize high‐valent metal sites at low overpotentials, thereby enhancing the OER activity. These results reveal the importance of tuning the local atomic structure for designing high efficiency electrocatalysts.  相似文献

A highly selective and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst is the bottleneck for direct seawater splitting because of side reactions primarily caused by chloride ions (Cl). Most studies about OER catalysts in seawater focus on the repulsion of the Cl to reduce its negative effects. Herein, we demonstrate that the absorption of Cl on the specific site of a popular OER electrocatalyst, nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH), does not have a significant negative impact; rather, it is beneficial for its activity and stability enhancement in natural seawater. A set of in situ characterization techniques reveals that the adsorption of Cl on the desired Fe site suppresses Fe leaching, and creates more OER-active Ni sites, improving the catalyst's long-term stability and activity simultaneously. Therefore, we achieve direct alkaline seawater electrolysis for the very first time on a commercial-scale alkaline electrolyser (AE, 120 cm2 electrode area) using the NiFe LDH anode. The new alkaline seawater electrolyser exhibits a reduction in electricity consumption by 20.7 % compared to the alkaline purified water-based AE using commercial Ni catalyst, achieving excellent durability for 100 h at 200 mA cm−2.  相似文献

The low-cost, high-abundance and durable layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been considered as promising electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the easy agglomeration of lamellar LDHs in the aqueous phase limits their practical applications. Herein, a series of ternary NiCoFe LDHs were successfully fabricated on nickel foam (NF) via a simple electrodeposition method. The as-prepared Ni(Co0.5Fe0.5)/NF displayed an unique nanoarray structural feature. It showed an OER overpotential of 209 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in alkaline solution, which was superior to most systems reported so far. As evidenced by the XPS and XAFS results, such excellent performance of Ni(Co0.5Fe0.5)/NF was attributed to the higher Co3+/Co2+ ratio and more defects exposed, comparing with Ni(Co0.5Fe0.5)-bulk and Ni(Co0.5Fe0.5)-mono LDHs prepared by conventional coprecipitation method. Furthermore, the ratio of Co to Fe could significantly tune the Co electronic structure of Ni(CoxFe1-x)/NF composites (x=0.25, 0.50 and 0.75) and affect the electrocatalytic activity for OER, in which Ni(Co0.5Fe0.5)/NF showed the lowest energy barrier for OER rate-determining step (from O* to OOH*). This work proposes a facile method to develop high-efficiency OER electrocatalysts.  相似文献

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an important half reaction in many energy conversion and storage techniques. However, the development of a low‐cost easy‐prepared OER electrocatalyst with high mass activity and rapid kinetics is still challenging. Herein, we report the facile deposition of tannin‐NiFe (TANF) complex film on carbon fiber paper (CP) as a highly efficient OER electrocatalyst. TANF gives rapid OER reaction kinetics with a very small Tafel slope of 28 mV dec?1. The mass activity of TANF reaches 9.17×103 Ag?1 at an overpotential of 300 mV, which is nearly 200‐times larger than that of NiFe double layered hydroxide. Furthermore, tannic acid in TANF can be electrochemically extracted under anodic potential, leaving the inorganic composite NixFe1?xOyHz as the OER‐active species. This work may provide a guide to probing the electrochemical transformation and investigating the reactive species of other metal–organic complexes as heterogeneous electrocatalysts.  相似文献

Non‐noble metal‐based metal–organic framework (MOF)‐derived electrocatalysts have recently attracted great interest in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here we report a facile synthesis of nickel‐based bimetallic electrocatalysts derived from 2D nanosheet‐assembled nanoflower‐like MOFs. The optimized morphologies and large Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area endow FeNi@CNF with efficient OER performance, where the aligned nanosheets can expose abundant active sites and benefit electron transfer. The complex nanoflower morphologies together with the synergistic effects between two metals attributed to the OER activity of the Ni‐based bimetallic catalysts. The optimized FeNi@CNF afforded an overpotential of 356 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm?2 with a Tafel slope of 62.6 mV dec?1, and also exhibited superior durability with only slightly degradation after 24 hours of continuous operation. The results may inspire the use of complex nanosheet‐assembled nanostructures to explore highly active catalysts for various applications.  相似文献

Electrochemical water splitting requires efficient, low‐cost water oxidation catalysts to accelerate the sluggish kinetics of the water oxidation reaction. A rapid photocorrosion method is now used to synthesize the homogeneous amorphous nanocages of Cu‐Ni‐Fe hydr(oxy)oxide as a highly efficient electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The as‐fabricated product exhibits a low overpotential of 224 mV on a glassy carbon electrode at 10 mA cm?2 (even lower down to 181 mV when supported on Ni foam) with a Tafel slope of 44 mV dec?1 for OER in an alkaline solution. The obtained catalyst shows an extraordinarily large mass activity of 1464.5 A g?1 at overpotential of 300 mV, which is the highest mass activity for OER. This synthetic strategy may open a brand new pathway to prepare copper‐based ternary amorphous nanocages for greatly enhanced oxygen evolution.  相似文献

Graphene‐based hybrid nanostructures possess many advantages in the field of electrochemical energy applications. In this work, a facile and efficient hydrothermal approach has been developed for the preparation of NiFe alloy nanoparticles/rGO hybrid nanostructures, in which the nanoparticles are well combined with rGO nanosheets and the size of the nanoparticles is about 100 nm. Moreover, the electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) tests confirmed that the obtained NiFe/rGO hybrid nanostructures possess notably higher activity than both the rGO‐free NiFe nanoparticles and pure Ni/rGO hybrids, and the optimal NiFe ratio is 2:1. The OER overpotential at 20 mA cm?1?2 with Ni2Fe/rGO is as low as 0.285 V, which is 96 mV lower than that of pure Ni/rGO hybrids. Meanwhile, the Ni2Fe/rGO catalyst has excellent stability. Therefore, this work contributes a facile and efficient method to prepare a NiFe alloy nanoparticles/rGO hybrid structure for potential applications in the field of electrochemical energy devices, such as electrochemical water splitting cells, rechargeable metal/air batteries, etc.  相似文献

The anode oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is known to largely limit the efficiency of electrolyzers owing to its sluggish kinetics. While crystalline metal oxides are promising as OER catalysts, their amorphous phases also show high activities. Efforts to produce amorphous metal oxides have progressed slowly, and how an amorphous structure benefits the catalytic performances remains elusive. Now the first scalable synthesis of amorphous NiFeMo oxide (up to 515 g in one batch) is presented with homogeneous elemental distribution via a facile supersaturated co‐precipitation method. In contrast to its crystalline counterpart, amorphous NiFeMo oxide undergoes a faster surface self‐reconstruction process during OER, forming a metal oxy(hydroxide) active layer with rich oxygen vacancies, leading to superior OER activity (280 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm?2 in 0.1 m KOH). This opens up the potential of fast, facile, and scale‐up production of amorphous metal oxides for high‐performance OER catalysts.  相似文献

Tuning the crystal phase of metal alloy nanomaterials has been proved a significant way to alter their catalytic properties based on crystal structure and electronic property. Herein, we successfully developed a simple strategy to controllably synthesize a rare crystal structure of hexagonal close‐packed (hcp) NiFe nanoparticle (NP) encapsulated in a N‐doped carbon (NC) shell (hcp‐NiFe@NC). Then, we systemically investigated the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of the samples under alkaline conditions, in which the hcp‐NiFe@NC exhibits superior OER activity compared to the conventional face‐centered cubic (fcc) NiFe encapsulated in a N‐doped carbon shell (fcc‐NiFe@NC). At the current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm?2, the hcp‐NiFe@NC with Fe/Ni ratio of ≈5.4 % only needs ultralow overpotentials of 226 mV and 263 mV versus reversible hydrogen electrode in 1.0 m KOH electrolyte, respectively, which were extremely lower than those of fcc‐NiFe@NC and most of other reported NiFe‐based electrocatalysts. We proposed that hcp‐NiFe possesses favorable electronic property to expedite the reaction on the NC surface, resulting higher catalytic activity for OER. This research provides a new insight to design more efficient electrocatalysts by considering the crystal phase correlated electronic property.  相似文献

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an ideal model to study the relationship between the activity and the surface properties of catalysts. Defect engineering has been extensively developed to tune the electrocatalytic activity for OER. Compared to the anion vacancies in metal oxides, cation vacancies are more challenging to selectively generate, and the insight into the structure and activity of cation vacancies‐rich catalysts are lacked. Herein, using SnCoFe perovskite hydroxide as a precursor, abundant Sn vacancies on the surface were preferentially produced by Ar plasma. Sn vacancies could be preferentially produced as confirmed by the X‐ray absorption spectra, probably owing to the lower lattice energy and weaker chemical bonds of Sn(OH)4. The Sn vacancies promoted the exposure of active CoFe sites, resulting in an amorphous surface layer, modulated the conductivity, and thus enhanced the OER performance.  相似文献

Transition‐metal oxides as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) provide a promising route to face the energy and environmental crisis issues. Although palmeirite oxide A2Mo3O8 as OER catalyst has been explored, the correlation between its active sites (tetrahedral or octahedral) and OER performance has been elusive. Now, magnetic Co2Mo3O8@NC‐800 composed of highly crystallized Co2Mo3O8 nanosheets and ultrathin N‐rich carbon layer is shown to be an efficient OER catalyst. The catalyst exhibits favorable performance with an overpotential of 331 mV@10 mA cm?2 and 422 mV@40 mA cm?2, and a full water‐splitting electrolyzer with it as anode catalyst shows a cell voltage of 1.67 V@10 mA cm?2 in alkaline. Combined HAADFSTEM, magnetic, and computational results show that factors influencing the OER performance can be attributed to the tetrahedral Co sites (high spin, t23e4), which improve the OER kinetics of rate‐determining step to form *OOH.  相似文献

Owing to the transient nature of the intermediates formed during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on the surface of transition metal oxides, their nature remains largely elusive by the means of simple techniques. The use of chemical probes is proposed, which, owing to their specific affinities towards different oxygen species, unravel the role played by these species on the OER mechanism. For that, tetraalkylammonium (TAA) cations, previously known for their surfactant properties, are introduced, which interact with the active oxygen sites and modify the hydrogen bond network on the surface of OER catalysts. Combining chemical probes with isotopic and pH‐dependent measurements, it is further demonstrated that the introduction of iron into amorphous Ni oxyhydroxide films used as model catalysts deeply modifies the proton exchange properties, and therefore the OER mechanism and activity.  相似文献

The preparation of noble metal‐free catalysts for water splitting is the key to low‐cost, sustainable hydrogen generation. Herein, through a pyrolysis‐oxidation process, we prepared a series of Co‐Fe‐Ni trimetallic oxidized carbon nanocubes (Co1‐XFeXNi‐OCNC) with a continuously changeable Co/Fe ratio (X=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 0.8, 0.9, 1). The Co1‐XFeXNi‐OCNC shows a volcano‐type oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity. The optimized Co0.1Fe0.9Ni‐OCNC achieves a low overpotential of 268 mV at 10 mA cm?2 with a very low Tafel slope of 48 mV dec?1 in 1 m KOH. At the same time, the stability of the Co0.1Fe0.9Ni‐OCNC is also outstanding; after 1000 CV cycles, the LSV plot is almost coincident. Moreover, the potential remains almost of the same value at 10 mA cm?2 after 12 h in comparison to the initial value. The excellent electrocatalytic properties can be attributed to the synergistic cooperation between each component. Therefore, the Co0.1Fe0.9Ni‐OCNC is a promising candidate instead of precious metal‐based electrocatalysts for OER.  相似文献

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is key to renewable energy technologies such as water electrolysis and metal–air batteries. However, the multiple steps associated with proton‐coupled electron transfer result in sluggish OER kinetics and catalysts are required. Here we demonstrate that a novel nitride, Ni2Mo3N, is a highly active OER catalyst that outperforms the benchmark material RuO2. Ni2Mo3N exhibits a current density of 10 mA cm?2 at a nominal overpotential of 270 mV in 0.1 m KOH with outstanding catalytic cyclability and durability. Structural characterization and computational studies reveal that the excellent activity stems from the formation of a surface‐oxide‐rich activation layer (SOAL). Secondary Mo atoms on the surface act as electron pumps that stabilize oxygen‐containing species and facilitate the continuity of the reactions. This discovery will stimulate the further development of ternary nitrides with oxide surface layers as efficient OER catalysts for electrochemical energy devices.  相似文献

Developing high‐efficiency and affordable electrocatalysts for the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a crucial bottleneck on the way to the practical applications of rechargeable energy storage technologies and water splitting for producing clean fuel (H2). In recent years, NiFe‐based materials have proven to be excellent electrocatalysts for OER. Understanding the characteristics that affect OER activity and determining the OER mechanism are of vital importance for the development of OER electrocatalysts. Therefore, in situ characterization techniques performed under OER conditions are urgently needed to monitor the key intermediates together with identifying the OER active centers and phases. In this Minireview, recent advances regarding in situ techniques for the characterization of NiFe‐based electrocatalysts are thoroughly summarized, including Raman spectroscopy, X‐ray absorption spectroscopy, ambient pressure X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, differential electrochemical mass spectrometry, and surface interrogation scanning electrochemical microscopy. The results from these in situ measurements not only reveal the structural transformation and the progressive oxidation of the catalytic species under OER conditions, but also disclose the crucial role of Ni and Fe during the OER. Finally, the need for developing new in situ techniques and theoretical investigations is discussed to better understand the OER mechanism and design promising OER electrocatalysts.  相似文献

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has been explored extensively for reliable hydrogen supply to boost the energy conversion efficiency. The superior OER performance of newly developed non‐noble metal electrocatalysts has concealed the identification of the real active species of the catalysts. Now, the critical active phase in nickel‐based materials (represented by NiNPS) was directly identified by observing the dynamic surface reconstruction during the harsh OER process via combining in situ Raman tracking and ex situ microscopy and spectroscopy analyses. The irreversible phase transformation from NiNPS to α‐Ni(OH)2 and reversible phase transition between α‐Ni(OH)2 and γ‐NiOOH prior to OER demonstrate γ‐NiOOH as the key active species for OER. The hybrid catalyst exhibits 48‐fold enhanced catalytic current at 300 mV and remarkably reduced Tafel slope to 46 mV dec?1, indicating the greatly accelerated catalytic kinetics after surface evolution.  相似文献
