Covalently crosslinked polyurethane/urea polymers were synthesized using diamine monomers modified with pendant glucose groups and 2,4‐toluene diisocyanate, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), and 1,1,1‐tris(hydroxymethyl)ethane (triol) comonomers. The polymers showed shape memory behavior with a switching temperature dependent on the glass transition temperature. The glass transition temperature is tuned by varying the mole ratio between the glucose‐diamine and PEG used in the polymerization. Increasing PEG content resulted in decreasing glass transition temperature, and a glass transition temperature of 39 °C, close to physiological temperatures, was obtained. The fixed shape showed gradual shape recovery behavior, but a fixity of 70% was achieved when the material was stored at 25 °C. The polymer recovered to the permanent shape when heated to 50 °C. Finally, the surface of a film of the polymer can be sulfated to achieve increased blood‐compatibility without sacrificing the shape memory properties. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. The purpose of this study was to develop a degradable thermoset shape‐memory polymer from poly(β‐amino ester) (PBAE) networks. PBAE was chosen to be the crosslinker as it is biodegradable and has been projected as a potential material for biomedical applications. The low glass transition temperature of PBAE was increased to a biomedically relevant range using methyl methacrylate and methyl acrylate as the linear chain builders. The thermo‐mechanical properties of the networks were tailored such that they exhibited onset of glass transition temperature in between the room temperature (22 °C) and the body temperature (37 °C). Free‐strain recovery tests under heating and isothermal conditions were performed to quantify shape‐memory behavior. Testing showed that sampled programmed at 10 °C initiated deformation recovery at a lower temperature and a faster rate as compared to programming at 60 °C. Higher thermal conductivity of water enabled the samples to recover faster in water than in air. Samples with higher PBAE crosslinking densities exhibited higher normalized mass loss under regular and accelerated conditions. The amount of water absorption in the networks also increased with the crosslinker concentration independent of the testing conditions. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The thermal transition of Nafion is studied using a molecular dynamics simulation through a chemically realistic model. Static and dynamic properties of polymer melts with different water contents are investigated over a wide range of temperatures to obtain viscometric and calorimetric glass transition temperatures. The effect of cooling rate of the simulation on the glass transition of the hydrated polymer is also examined within the well‐known Williams–Landel–Ferry (WLF) equation. Variation of relaxation times versus temperature shows a fragile‐to‐strong transition. The hydration level has a significant impact on the static and dynamic properties of the polymer chains and water molecules confined in nanometric spaces between polymer chains. The results of this study are useful to predict the behavior of Nafion for various applications including fuel cells, sensors, actuators, and shape memory devices at different temperatures. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Exothermic nonreversing process is predicted to present in the phase transition of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM). By employing TOPEM‐DSC, exothermic nonreversing heat flow peak is observed for the first time, and it usually appears under nonquasi‐static conditions. The exothermic nonreversing heat flow is proved to be from the formation of hydrogen bonds by the comparative studies on the phase transition of poly(N,N‐diethylacrylamide) (PDEAM) and cyclic heating and cooling of PDEAM and PNIPAM. Further TOPEM‐DSC studies on the phase transition of poly(NIPAM‐co‐DEAM) and poly(NIPAM‐co‐AAm) prove that hydrophobic force rather than hydrogen bonding is the main driving force for the phase transition, and hydrophobic force is also the driving force for the formation of inter‐ and intrachain hydrogen bonding. However, the phase transition driven by only hydrophobic force is a slow process. The combined action of hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic force makes the phase transition occur much faster. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Motivated by the growing demand for greener and sustainable polymer systems, self‐healing elastomers were prepared by emulsion polymerization of terpene and furfural‐based monomers. Both the method and the monomers were green and sustainable. The synthesized copolymers showed molecular weights between 59,080 and 84,210 Da and glass‐transition temperature (Tg) between ?25 and ?40 °C, implying rubbery properties. A set of one‐dimensional (1D) and two‐dimensional (2D) NMR spectroscopy supported the formation of the copolymer and nuclear spin–spin coupling in the copolymer. Reactivity ratios were determined by conventional linear method. A thermoreversible network was achieved for the first time by reacting the furan‐based polymer with bismaleimide (BM) as a crosslinker, via a Diels?Alder (DA) coupling reaction. The reversible nature of the polymer network was evidenced from infrared and NMR spectroscopy. The thermoreversible character of the DA crosslinked adduct was confirmed by applying retro‐DA reaction (observed in differential scanning calorimeter [DSC] analysis) and mechanical recovery was verified by repeated heating and cooling cycles. The network polymers displayed excellent self‐healing ability, triggered by heating at 130 °C for 4–12 h, when their scratched surface was screened by microscopic visualization. The healing efficiency of the crosslinked DA‐adduct was calculated as 78%, using atomic force microscopy. This work provides a green and efficient approach to prepare new green and functional materials. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2019 , 57, 738–751  相似文献

A siloxane‐containing diphenol is synthesized from 1,1,3,3‐tetramethyldisiloxane and o‐allylphenol, followed by the Mannich condensation with aniline, methylamine, and formaldehyde yielding two siloxane‐containing benzoxazines. The onset polymerization temperature of aniline‐based benzoxazine is higher than that of the methylamine counterpart. The dynamic mechanical properties of the polybenzoxazines depend on the structure of the starting primary amines. Both polybenzoxazines exhibit one‐way dual‐shape memory behavior in response to changes in temperature, and they show excellent shape fixity ratios in bending, tension, and tensile stress–strain tests, high shape recovery ratios in bending and tension tests, but relatively low shape recovery ratios in tensile stress–strain test. The network chain segments including the alkylsiloxane units serve as a thermal control switch based on the glass transition temperatures (39 and 53 °C) for the polybenzoxazines. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We prepared blends of poly(butylene‐2,6‐naphthalate) (PBN) and poly(ether imide) (PEI) by solution‐casting from dichloroacetic acid solutions. The miscibility, crystallization, and melting behavior of the blends were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis. PBN was miscible with PEI over the entire range of compositions, as shown by the existence of single composition‐dependent glass‐transition temperatures. In addition, a negative polymer–polymer interaction parameter was calculated, with the Nishi–Wang equation, based on the melting depression of PBN. In nonisothermal crystallization investigations, the depression of the crystallization temperature of PBN depended on the composition of the blend and the cooling rate; the presence of PEI reduced the number of PBN segments migrating to the crystallite/melt interface. Melting, recrystallization, and remelting processes occurring during the DSC heating scan caused the occurrence of multiple melting endotherms for PBN. We explored the effects of various experimental conditions on the melting behavior of PBN/PEI blends. The extent of recrystallization of the PBN component during DSC heating scans decreased as the PEI content, the heating rate, the crystallization temperature, and the crystallization time increased. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This review focuses on new insights into the crystal melting transition and the amorphous glass transition of polymers that have been gained through recent advances in thermoanalytical methods. The specific heat capacity can now be studied under two extreme limits, that is, under quasi‐isothermal conditions (limit of zero heating rate) and, at the other end of the scale, under rapid heating conditions (heating rates on the order of thousands of degrees per second), made possible through nanocalorimetry. The reversible melting, and multiple reversible melting, of semicrystalline polymers is explored using quasi‐isothermal temperature modulated differential scanning calorimetry, TMDSC. The excess reversing heat capacity, above the baseline, measured under nearly isothermal conditions is attributed to locally reversible surface melting and crystallization processes that do not require molecular nucleation. Observations of double reversible melting endotherms in isotactic polystyrene suggest existence of two distinct populations of crystals, each showing locally reversible surface melting. The second subject of the review, nanocalorimetry, is utilized to study samples of small mass under conditions of very fast heating and cooling. The glass transition properties of thin amorphous polymer films are observed under adiabatic conditions. The glass transition temperature appears to be independent of film thickness, and is observed even in ultra‐thin films. Recrystallization and reorganization during rapid heating are studied by nanocalorimetry of semicrystalline polymers. The uppermost endotherm seen under normal DSC scanning of poly(ethylene terephthalate) is caused by reorganization, and vanishes under the rapid heating conditions (3000K/s) provided by nanocalorimetry. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Shape memory properties of two thermoplastic multiblock copolymers composed of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) having different PEG‐segment lengths of 6 and 11 kDa were studied. The performance as a shape memory polymer at high strain level (600%) and its interrelations with shape‐programming conditions, molecular orientation, and microstructural changes are elucidated. A significant contribution of strain‐induced crystallization of PLA segments to the improvement of temporary shape fixation was evidenced upon increasing draw ratio and/or shape‐holding duration as well as programming temperature (within certain range) without largely sacrificing the shape recoverability. Series of microstructural characterizations reveal the occurrence of fibrillar‐to‐lamellar transformation upon shape recovery (at 60 °C) of the samples programmed at 40 °C, generating shish–kebab crystalline morphology. Such phenomenon is responsible for the high‐strain shape memory effect of these materials. The unprecedented formation of shish–kebab structure at such relatively low temperature (instead of the melting temperature range) in solid state observed in these copolymers as well as their high‐strain shape memory functionality would bestow the promising future for their practicability in diverse areas. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(D ,L ‐lactide) and poly(D ,L ‐lactide‐co‐glycolide) with various composition and with one methacrylate and one carboxylate end group were synthesized and grafted onto poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) via the carboxylate group. The graft copolymers were crosslinked via the methacrylate groups using a free radical initiator. The polymer networks were characterized by means of NMR and studied qualitatively by means of IR spectroscopy. The influence of the glycolide content in the polyester grafts and of the number of ester units in the grafts on thermal properties and swellability were studied as well. The high swellability in water is characteristic of all hydrogels. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed a single glass transition temperature that occurs in the range between 51 and 69 °C. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of the networks showed the main loss in weight in the temperature range between 290 and 370 °C. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study a series of hyperbranched modified shape‐memory polymers were subjected to constrained shape recoveries in order to determine their potential use as thermomechanical actuators. Materials were synthesized from a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A as base epoxy and a polyetheramine and a commercial hyperbranched poly(ethyleneimine) as crosslinker agents. Hyperbranched polymers within the structure of the shape‐memory epoxy polymers led to a more heterogeneous network that can substantially modify mechanical properties. Thermomechanical and mechanical properties were analyzed and discussed in terms of the content of hyperbranched polymer. Shape‐memory effect was analyzed under fully and partially constrained conditions. When shape recovery was carried out with fixed strain a recovery stress was obtained whereas when it was carried out with a constraining stress the material performs mechanical work. Tensile tests at TgE′ showed excellent values of stress and strain at break (up to 15 MPa and almost 60%, respectively). Constrained recovery performances revealed rapid recovery stress generation and unusually high recovery stresses (up to 7 MPa) and extremely high work densities (up to 750 kJ/m3). The network structure of shape‐memory polymers was found to be a key factor for actuator‐like applications. Results confirm that hyperbranched modified‐epoxy shape memory polymers are good candidates for actuator‐like shape‐memory applications. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Polymer blends of poly(vinylphenol) (PVPh) and poly(styrene‐co‐vinylphenol) with poly(p‐acetoxystyrene) (PAS) were prepared by solution casting from tetrahydrofuran solution. The thermal properties and hydrogen bonding of the blends were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Although hydrogen bonding existed between the PVPh and PAS segments, the experimental results indicated that PVPh is immiscible with PAS as shown by the existence of two glass‐transition temperatures over the entire composition range by DSC. This phenomenon is attributed to the strong self‐association of PVPh, intramolecular screening, and functional group accessibility effects of the PVPh/PAS blend system. However, the incorporation of an inert diluent moiety such as styrene into the PVPh chain renders the modified polymer to be miscible with PAS. Copolymers containing between 16 and 51 mol % vinylphenol were fully miscible with PAS according to DSC studies. These observed results were caused by the reduction of the strong self‐association of PVPh and the increase of the interassociation between PVPh and PAS segments with the incorporation of styrene on the PVPh chain. According to the Painter‐Coleman association model, the interassociation equilibrium constant of PVPh/PAS blends was determined by a model compound and polymer blend. Good correlation between these two methods was obtained after considering the intramolecular screening and functional group accessibility effect in the polymer blend. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amine‐terminated monodisperse hard segments (MDHSs) containing two to four 4,4′‐methylenebis (phenyl isocyanate) extended by 1,4‐butanediol have been synthesized using carboxybenzyl protecting‐deprotecting strategy. Pure MDHSs in large scale were obtained in good yield and their structures were confirmed by 1H‐, 13C‐NMR spectroscopy and GPC‐MALLS. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that as the hard segment (HS) size increased, the melting and glass transition temperature and the change of heat capacity at glass transition of ethyl capped MDHSs increased. Model thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) were synthesized using the reaction of bischloroformate of poly (tetramethylene oxide) (PTMO) diol or polyisobutylene (PIB) diol with amine‐terminated MDHSs. X‐ray diffraction results indicated the amorphous structure of model TPUs. DSC revealed HS related endotherms, regardless of SS, which were attributed to the local ordering of the HSs. Additional endotherms in PTMO based model TPUs might arise from the dissociation of hydrogen bonding between PTMO and HSs. The lower Tg in model TPUs compared to the polydisperse analogues observed by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) indicated higher microphase separation of monodisperse HSs. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, two kinds of high temperature shape memory copolyimides were prepared and the shape memory cycles induced structural evolution of macromolecular chains was investigated in detail. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of poly(benzoxazole‐co‐imide) (PI1) and poly(benzimidazole‐co‐imide) (PI2) are 280 °C and 355 °C, respectively. The results show that PI1 could keep stable macromolecular chain structure under shape memory cycles and exhibit outstanding shape memory performance (Rf > 98%, Rr > 97%) under different stretch condition. Whereas, shape memory cycles induced orientation with more ordered macromolecular chains packing is formed for PI2 after several thermal mechanical cycles, which strongly affect physical crosslinking points, thermal mechanical properties as well as shape memory behaviors. The study on macroscopic property and microscopic structure evolution will promote a better understanding of the shape memory effect of polyimides and accelerate development of high performance polyimides for shape memory applications. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To have a better insight into the effect of interaction between polymer matrix and clay on the properties of nanocomposite, poly(methyl methacrylate)/clay nanocomposites were prepared by a heterocoagulation method. Using a reactive cationic emulsifier, methacryloyloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (METAC), a strong polymer–clay interaction was obtained with the advantage of keeping a consistent polymer matrix property. X‐ray diffraction and transmission electronic microscopy indicated an exfoliated structure in nanocomposites. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the nanocomposites was measured by DSC and DMA. The DMA results showed that with a strong interaction, PMMA–METAC nanocomposite showed a 20 °C enhancement in glass transition temperature (Tg), whereas a slight increase in Tg was observed for PMMA–cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)/clay nanocomposite with a weak interaction. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis and self‐assembling of a thermoresponsive conjugate of hyaluronic acid (HA) and poly(N‐vinylcaprolactam) (PVCL) is reported. Both polymers were end functionalized: HA via reductive amination, thereby introducing an azide endgroup to the chain end, and PVCL via thioetherification to introduce a propargyl group. The two were coupled with a copper assisted “click” reaction into a bioconjugate composed of HA blocks with the molar mass 3,600 g mol?1 (1618 saccharide units) and PVCL blocks of 3,500 g mol?1 (~25 repeating units). The cloud point temperature measured by transmittance was 50–51 °C in water. The calorimetrically observed phase transition temperature of PVCL in the conjugate increased by 2 °C to 47.7 °C, whereas the enthalpy of the phase transition was unaffected by the conjugation. HA‐PVCL conjugate self‐assembles in water upon heating into monodisperse, colloidally stable, hollow spherical particles whose size may be tuned with the heating rate of the solution. Slow and fast heating resulted in vesicles with the hydrodynamic radii of 443 or 275 nm, respectively. The heating rate did not, however, affect the cloud point. Salt did not noticeably affect the size of the polymer particles, presumably because of interactions between the HA and PVCL blocks. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Photoresponsive polyamides containing main‐chain pentamethylated norbornadiene (NBD) moieties are obtained in quantitative yields via the Yamazaki–Higashi reaction between a pentamethylated NBD dicarboxylic acid and a series of aromatic diamines. Chemical structures are confirmed by 1H and 13C NMR and weight average molar masses measured by SEC are in the range of 21,500–28,600 g mol?1 with chain dispersities close to 2. Physical properties are investigated by FTIR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis, and viscosimetry. All obtained polyamides are amorphous with glass transition temperatures ranging from 68 to 124 °C. They are soluble at room temperature in common organic solvents and exhibit good thermal stabilities with Td10 values ranging from 175 to 276 °C. The photochemical isomerization of the NBD moiety into quadricyclane (QC) is studied by UV/vis spectroscopy after sunlight irradiation of polymer films. For all polyamides, a first‐order kinetic rate is observed for the conversion of NBD to QC. The thermal release of the stored energy associated to the reverse transformation of QC groups into NBD ones is about 90–95 kJ mol?1 as measured by DSC of the irradiated polymer films. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of shape‐memory epoxy thermosets were synthesized by crosslinking diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A with mixtures of commercially available hyperbranched poly(ethyleneimine) and polyetheramine. Thermal, mechanical and shape‐memory properties were studied and the effect on them of the content and structure of the hyperbranched polymer was discussed. Measurements showed that the glass transition temperature can be tailored from 60 °C to 117 °C depending on the hyperbranched polymer content, and all formulations showed an appropriate glassy/rubbery storage modulus ratio. Shape‐memory programming was carried out at TgE′ given the excellent mechanical properties of the materials, with maximum stress and failure strain up to 15 MPa and 60%, respectively. The resulting shape‐memory behavior was excellent, with maximum shape recovery and shape fixity of 98% as well as a fast shape‐recovery rate of 22%/min. The results show that hyperbranched poly(ethyleneimine) as a crosslinking agent can be used to enhance mechanical and shape‐memory properties with different effects depending on the crosslinking density. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Miscibility and hydrogen bonding interaction have been investigated for the binary blends of poly(butylene adipate‐co‐44 mol % butylene terephthalate)[P(BA‐co‐BT)] with 4,4'‐thiodiphenol (TDP) and poly(ethylene‐ oxide)(PEO) with TDP; and the ternary blends of P(BA‐co‐BT)/PEO/TDP by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The DSC results indicated that the binary blends of P(BA‐co‐BT)/TDP and PEO/TDP were miscible because each blend showed only one composition‐dependent glass‐transition over the entire range of the blend composition. The formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the hydroxyl groups of TDP and the carbonyl groups of P(BA‐co‐BT), and between the hydroxyl groups of TDP and the ether groups of PEO was confirmed by the FTIR spectra. According to the glass‐transition temperature measured by DSC, P(BA‐co‐BT) and PEO, their binary blends were immiscible over the entire range of blend composition, however, the miscibility between P(BA‐co‐BT) and PEO was enhanced through the TDP‐mediated intermolecular hydrogen bonding interaction. It was concluded that TDP content of about 5–10% may possibily enhance miscibility between P(BA‐co‐BT) and PEO via a hydrogen bonding interaction. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Diblock copolymers of poly[2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate]‐block‐poly[di(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate], PDMAEMA‐b‐PDEGMA, were synthesized by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. The block ratio was varied to study the influence on the lower critical solution temperature and the corresponding phase transition in water. Therefore, turbidimetry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and laser Doppler velocimetry were applied. Additionally, asymmetric flow field‐flow fractionation (AF4) coupled to DLS and multiangle laser light scattering (MALLS) was established as an alternative route to characterize these systems in terms of molar mass of the polymer chain and size of the colloids after the phase transition. It was found that AF4–MALLS allowed accurate determination of molar masses in the studied range. Nevertheless, some limitations were observed, which were critically discussed. The cloud point and phase transition of all materials, as revealed by turbidimetry, could be confirmed by DSC. For block copolymers with block ratios in the range of 50:50, a thermo‐induced self‐assembly into micellar and vesicular structures with hydrodynamic radii (Rh) of around 25 nm was observed upon heating. At higher temperatures, a reordering of the self‐assembled structures could be detected. The thermo‐responsive behavior was further investigated in dependence of pH value and ionic strength. Variation of the pH value mainly influences the solubility of the PDMAEMA segment, where a decrease of the pH value increases the transition temperature. An increase of ionic strength leads to a reduction of the cloud point due to the screening of electrostatic interactions. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym.
