The weak point of the generalized self-consistent method (GSCM) is that its solution for the effective shear moduli involves determining the complicated displacement and strain fields in constitutents. Furthermore, the effective moduli estimated by GSCM cannot be expressed in an explicit form. Instead of following the procedure of GSCM, in this paper a generalized self-consistent Mori-Tanaka method (GSCMTM) is developed by means of Hill's interface condition and the assumption that the strain in the inclusion is uniform. A comparison with the existing theoretical and experimental results shows that the present GSCMTM is sufficiently accurate to predict the effective moduli of the coated inclusion-based composite materials. Moreover, it is interesting to find that the application of Hill's interface condition in volumetric domain is equivalent to the Mori-Tanaka average field approximation.

A three-phase cylindrical model for analyzing fiber composite subject to in-plane mechanical load under the coupling effects of multiple physical fields (thermo, electric, magnetic and elastic) is presented. By introducing an eigenstrain corresponding to the thermo-electro-magnetic-elastic effect, the complex multi-field coupling problem can be reduced to a formal in-plane elasticity problem for which an exact closed form solution is available. The present three-phase model can be applied to fiber/interphase/matrix composites, such that a lot of interesting thermo-electro-magnetism and stress coupling phenomena induced by the interphase layer are revealed. The present model can also be applied to fiber/matrix composites, in terms of which a generalized self-consistent method (GSCM) is developed for predicting the effective properties of piezoelectric–magnetic fiber reinforced composites. The effective piezoelectric, piezomagnetic, thermoelectric and magnetoelectric moduli can be expressed in compact explicit formulae for direct references and applications. A comparison of the predictions by the GSCM with available experimental data is presented, and interesting magnification effects and peculiar product properties are discussed. As a theoretical basis for the GSCM, the equivalence of the three sets of different average field equations in predicting the effective properties are proved, and this fact provides a strong evidence of mathematical rigor and physical realism in the formulation.

Under investigation is a heterogeneous material consisting of an elastic homogeneous isotropic matrix in which layered elastic isotropic inclusions or pores are embedded. The generalized self-consistent model (GSCM) is extended so as to be capable of estimating the apparent elastic properties of a finite-size specimen smaller than a representative volume element (RVE). The kinematical or static apparent shear modulus is determined as a root of a cubic polynomial equation instead of a quadratic polynomial equation as in the classical GSCM of Christensen and Lo [Christensen, R.M., Lo, K.H., 1979. Solutions for effective shear properties in three phase sphere and cylinder models. J. Mech. Phys. Solids 27, 315–330]. It turns out that the extended GSCM establishes a link between the composite sphere assemblage model (CSAM) of Hashin [Hashin, Z., 1962. The elastic moduli of heterogeneous materials. J. Appl. Mech. 29, 143–150] and the classical GSCM. Demanding that the normalized distance between the kinematical and static apparent moduli of a finite-size specimen be smaller than a certain tolerance, the minimum RVE size is estimated in a closed form.

The classical generalized self-consistent model (GSCM) is recognized to be suitable and efficient for estimating the effective moduli of an isotropic composite consisting of an isotropic host matrix and an isotropic inclusion phase. The present work aims to enlarge the scope of the GSCM so that it becomes applicable to a good number of important situations where the phases cannot be differentiated as the host matrix and inclusions. This objective is achieved first by inserting into the unknown effective medium a coated composite sphere whose core is made of the unknown effective medium and whose coatings are formed of the constituent phases and then by imposing an energy equivalency condition. The equations thus obtained to characterize the effective bulk and shear moduli involve a microstructural parameter which turns out to be capable of describing in some sense how far a microstructure is from the host matrix/inclusion morphology. The important case of two-phase composites is studied in detail to illustrate the salient features of the proposed model.

Effective elastic moduli of inhomogeneous solids by embedded cell model
An embedded cell model is presented to obtain the effective elastic moduli for three-dimensional two-phase composites which is an exact analytic formula without any simplified approximation and can be expressed in an explicit form. For the different cells such as spherical inclusions and cracks surrounded by sphere and oblate ellipsoidal matrix, the effective elastic moduli are evaluated and the results are compared with those from various micromechanics models. These results show that the present model is direct, simple and efficient to deal with three-dimensional two-phase composites. HOMOGENIZATION—BASED TOPOLOGY DESIGN FOR PURE TORSION OF COMPOSITE SHAFTS
In conjunction with the homogenization theory and the finite element method, the mathematical models for designing the corss-section of composite shafts by maximizing the torsion rigidity are developed in this paper. To obtain the extremal torsion rigidity, both the cross-section of the macro scale shaft and the representative microstructure of the composite material are optimized using the new models. The micro scale computational model addresses the problem of finding the periodic microstructures with extreme shear moduli. The optimal microstructure obtained with the new model and the homogenization method can be used to improve and optimize natural or artificial materials. In order to be more practical for engineering applications, cellular materials rather than ranked materials are used in the optimal process in the existence of optimal bounds for the elastic properties. Moreover, the macro scale model is proposed to optimize the cross-section of the torsional shaft based on the tailared composites. The validating optimal results show that the models are very effective in obtaining composites with extreme elastic properties, and the cross-section of the composite shaft with the extremal torsion rigidity. The imperfect interface conditions which are equivalent to the effect of a thin elastic interphase are derived by a Taylor expansion method in terms of interface displacement and traction jumps. Plane and cylindrical interfaces are analyzed as special cases. The effective elastic moduli of a unidirectional coated fiber composite are obtained on the basis of the derived imperfect interface conditions. High accuracy of the method is demonstrated by comparison of solutions of several problems in terms of the imperfect interface conditions or explicit presence of interphase as a third phase. The problems considered are transverse shear of a coated infinite fiber in infinite matrix and effective transverse bulk and shear moduli and effective axial shear modulus of a coated fiber composite. Unlike previous elastic imperfect interface conditions in the literature, the present ones are valid for the entire range of interphase stiffness, from very small to very large.

Classical micromechanical methods for calculating the effective moduli of a heterogeneous material are generalized to include the interface (surface) effect. By using Hashin‘s Composite Sphere Assemblage (CSA) model, a new expression of the bulk modulus for a particle-reinforced composite is derived. It is emphasized that the present study is within the finite-deformation framework such that the effective properties are not influenced by the interface stress itself solely, but influenced by the change of the interface stress due to changes of the shape and size of the interface, itence some inadequacies in previous papers are pointed out.

Recently, some new quadrilateral finite elements were successfully developed by the Quadrilateral Area Coordinate (QAC) method. Compared with those traditional models using isoparametric coordinates, these new models are less sensitive to mesh distortion. In this paper, a new displacement-based, 4-node 20-DOF (5-DOF per node) quadrilateral bending element based on the first-order shear deformation theory for analysis of arbitrary laminated composite plates is presented. Its bending part is based on the element AC-MQ4, a recent-developed high-performance Mindlin-Reissner plate element formulated by QAC method and the generalized conforming condition method; and its in-plane displacement fields are interpolated by bilinear shape functions in isoparametric coordinates. Furthermore, the hybrid post-processing procedure, which was firstly proposed by the authors, is employed again to improve the stress solutions, especially for the transverse shear stresses. The resulting element, denoted as AC-MQ4-LC, exhibits excellent performance in all linear static and dynamic numerical examples. It demonstrates again that the QAC method, the generalized conforming condition method, and the hybrid post-processing procedure are efficient tools for developing simple, effective and reliable finite element models. Based on our 2D BEM software THBEM2 which can be applied to the simulation of an elastic body with randomly distributed identical circular holes, a scheme of BEM for the simulation of elastic bodies with randomly distributed circular inclusions is proposed. The numerical examples given show that the boundary element method is more accurate and more effective than the finite element method for such a problem. The scheme presented can also be successfully used to estimate the effective elastic properties of composite materials. This paper presents a closed-form expression for the homogenized longitudinal shear moduli of a linear elastic composite material reinforced by long, parallel, radially-graded circular fibres with a periodic arrangement. An imperfect linear elastic fibre-matrix interface is allowed. The asymptotic homogenization method is adopted, and the relevant cell problem is addressed. Periodicity is enforced by resorting to the theory of Weierstrass elliptic functions. The equilibrium equation in the fibre domain is solved in closed form by applying the theory of hypergeometric functions, for new wide classes of grading profiles defined in terms of special functions. The effectiveness of the present analytical procedure is proved by convergence analysis and comparison with finite element solutions. A parametric analysis investigating the influence of microstructural and material features on the effective moduli is presented. The feasibility of mitigating the shear stress concentration in the composite by tuning the fibre grading profile is shown.

This paper presents a new simple method of implicit time integration with two control parameters for solving initial-value problems of dynamics such that its accuracy is at least of order two along with the conditional and unconditional stability regions of the parameters. When the control parameters in the method are optimally taken in their regions, the accuracy may be improved to reach of order three. It is found that the new scheme can achieve lower numerical amplitude dissipation and period dispersion than some of the existing methods, e.g. the Newmark method and Zhai’s approach, when the same time step size is used. The region of time step dependent on the parameters in the new scheme is explicitly obtained. Finally, some examples of dynamic problems are given to show the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed scheme applied in dynamic systems. The effective elastic behavior of a transversely isotropic composite made from two incompressible elastic materials is examined. The set of all effective elasticity tensors for transversely isotropic finite rank laminar microstructures is described. The extremal property of this class of microstructures is used to derive a new more precise characterization of the set of effective shear moduli. The perturbation series for the effective elasticity tensor is considered. An explicit formula for the second order perturbation tensor is derived. We describe precisely the set of tensors that correspond to all second order perturbations consistent with transverse isotropy. We apply analytic methods [cf. 27] to show that all second order perturbation tensors are realized by finite rank laminar microstructures.Supported by NSF through Grant DMS-3907658.

To avoid the numerical oscillation of the penalty method and non-compatibility with explicit operators of conventional Lagrange multiplier methods used in transient contact problems to enforce surface contact conditions, a new approach to enforcing surface contact constraints for the transient nonlinear finite element problems, referred to as “the reduced augmented Lagrangian bi-conjugate gradient method (ALCG)”, is developed in this paper. Based on the nonlinear constrained optimization theory and is compatible with the explicit time integration scheme, this approach can also be used in implicit scheme naturally. The new surface contact constraint method presented has significant advantages over the widely adopted penalty function methods and the conventional Lagrangian multiplier methods. The surface contact constraints are satisfied more accurately for each step by the algorithm, so the oscillation of numerical solution for the explicit scheme is depressed. Through the development of new iteration strategy for solving nonlinear equations, ALCG method improves the computational efficiency greatly. The problem of bounding the total creep (or total stress relaxation) of a composite made of two linear viscoelastic materials and subjected to a constant hydrostatic or antiplane loading is considered. It is done by coupling the immediate and the relaxed responses of the composite, which are pure elastic. The coupled bounds provide the possible range of the total deformation at infinite time as a function of the initial deformation of the composite. For antiplane shear existing bounds for coupled two-dimensional conductivity yield the required coupled bounds, and these are attained by doubly coated cylinder assemblages. The translation method is used to couple the effective bulk moduli of a viscoelastic composite at zero and infinite time. A number of microgeometries are found to attain the bulk modulus bounds. It is shown that the Hashin's composite sphere assemblage does not necessarily correspond to the maximum or minimum overall creep, although it necessarily attains the bounds for effective bulk moduli. For instance, there are cases when the doubly coated sphere microstructure or some special polycrystal arrangements attain the bounds on the total creep.

The dynamic behavior of two collinear anti-plane shear cracks in a piezoelectric layer bonded to two half spaces subjected to the harmonic waves is investigated by a new method. The cracks are parallel to the interfaces in the mid-plane of the piezoelectric layer. By using the Fourier transform, the problem can be solved with two pairs of triple integral equations. These equations are solved by using Schmidt’s method. This process is quite different from that adopted previously. Numerical examples are provided to show the effect of the geometry of cracks, the frequency of the incident wave, the thickness of the piezoelectric layer and the constants of the materials upon the dynamic stress intensity factor of cracks.

A high-order accurate explicit scheme is proposed for solving Euler/Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations for steady and unsteady flows, respectively. Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model is utilized to obtain the turbulent viscosity. For the explicit scheme, the Runge-Kutta time-stepping methods of third orders are used in time integration, and space discretization for the right-hand side (RHS) terms of semi-discrete equations is performed by third-order ENN scheme for inviscid terms and fourth-order compact difference for viscous terms. Numerical experiments suggest that the present scheme not only has a fairly rapid convergence rate, but also can generate a highly resolved approximation to numerical solution, even to unsteady problem.
