The in-line (IL) vortex-induced vibration (VIV) that occurs frequently in ocean engineering may cause severe fatigue damage in slender marine structures. To the best knowledge of the authors, in existing literatures, there is no efficient analytical model for predicting pure IL VIV. In this paper, a wake oscillator model capable of analyzing the IL VIV of slender marine structures has been developed. Two different kinds of van der Pol equations are used to describe the near wake dynamics related to the fluctuating nature of symmetric vortex shedding in the first excitation region and alternate vortex shedding in the second one. Some comparisons are carried out between the present model results and experimental data. It is found that many phenomena observed in experiments could be reproduced by the present wake oscillator model.

A time domain model is presented to study the vibrations of long slender cylinders placed in shear flow. Long slender cylinders such as risers and tension legs are widely used in the field of ocean engineering. They are subjected to vortex-induced vibrations(VIV) when placed within a transverse incident flow. A three dimensional model coupled with wake oscillators is formulated to describe the response of the slender cylinder in cross-flow and in-line directions. The wake oscillators are distributed along the cylinder and the vortex-shedding frequency is derived from the local current velocity. A non-linear fiuid force model is accounted for the coupled effect between cross-flow and in-line vibrations. The comparisons with the published experimental data show that the dynamic features of VIV of long slender cylinder placed in shear flow can be obtained by the proposed model, such as the spanwise average displacement, vibration frequency, dominant mode and the combination of standing and traveling waves. The simulation in a uniform flow is also conducted and the result is compared with the case of nonuniform flow. It is concluded that the flow shear characteristic has significantly changed the cylinder vibration behavior.

Previous analytical work on stability of fluid-conveying pipes assumed a uniform velocity profile for the conveyed fluid. In real fluid flows, the presence of viscosity leads to a sheared region near the wall. Earlier studies correctly note that viscous forces do not affect the dynamics of the system since these forces are balanced by pressure drop in the conveyed fluid. Although viscous shear has not been ignored in these studies, a uniform velocity profile assumes that the sheared region is infinitely thin. Prior analysis was extended to account for a fully developed non-uniform profile such as would be encountered in real fluid flows. A modified, highly tractable equation of motion was derived, which includes a single additional parameter to account for the true momentum of the fluid. This empirical parameter was determined by numerical analysis over the Reynolds number range of interest. The stability of cantilever pipes conveying fluid with two types of non-uniform velocity profile was assessed. In the first case, the profile was a function of Reynolds number and transition to turbulence occurred before the onset of flutter instability. This case had stability properties similar to the uniform velocity case except in specific narrow regions of the parameter space. The second case required that the Reynolds number be such that the flow was always laminar. For this case, lower fluid velocity was required to achieve instability, and the oscillation frequency at instability was considerably lower over much of the parameter space, compared to the uniform case.

The mechanism underlying the lock-in of frequencies in flow-induced vibrations is analysed using elementary linear dynamics. Considering the case of lock-in in vortex-induced vibrations (VIV), we use a standard wake oscillator model, as in previous studies, but in its simplest form where all nonlinear terms and all dissipative terms are neglected. The stability of the resulting linear system is analysed, and a range of coupled-mode flutter is found. In this range, the frequency of the most unstable mode is found to deviate from the Strouhal law when the frequency of the wake oscillator approaches that of the free cylinder motion. Simultaneously the growth rate resulting from coupled-mode flutter increases, which would lead to higher vibration amplitudes. The extent of the range of lock-in is then compared with experimental data, showing a good agreement. It is therefore stated that the lock-in phenomenon, such as in VIV, is a particular case of linear coupled-mode flutter.

We consider the nonlinear coupled hydroelastic problem of a general curved and twisted flexible slender structure (i.e. flexible riser, cable system, fish–farm net system, towed arrays, etc.) embedded in a nonuniform flow field such as the ocean environment; the flow direction is arbitrary, relative to the axis of the slender structure. The motion of the elastic structure is coupled with the hydrodynamic loads acting on the slender structure by the ambient flow field. An important input for such hydroelastic problems is the computation of the hydrodynamic loading per unit length experienced by the slender body. A rigorously derived improvement for the inertial loading per unit length over the commonly used Morison-type semi-empirical force (originally obtained for straight long structures in a uniform stream) is used. The structure is also allowed to undergo small (yet finite) deflections from its original reference central-line, due to a particular model of intrinsic elasticity governed by a corresponding nonlinear PDE, which corresponds to the well-known Kirchhoff rod elastic model. The system of coupled hydroelastic equations is investigated in order to derive analytically the influence of the hydrodynamic loading in a uniform stationary stream on the nonlinear stability of the straight rod. It is found that the presence of an ambient stationary stream decreases the critical parameters (critical twist) of the buckling phenomenon which is known to exist for the same rod when placed in a vacuum. Also revealed is a new type of stability loss, which is affected by viscous effects.

In the present study, an experimental investigation was performed to characterize the vortex induced vibration (VIV) of a flexible cable in an oncoming shear flow. The VIV tests were conducted in a wind tunnel with a flexible cable model. It was found that, under different oncoming velocity profiles, the cable model behaved in single-mode and multi-mode VIVs. The displacement amplitudes of the single mode VIVs were found to be larger than those of multi-mode VIVs, and the cross-flow (CF) response was larger than that of in-line (IL) direction for either the single mode or multi-mode VIVs. For a single mode vibration, the largest CF response occurs in the 1st mode VIV, and the motion trajectory of the 1st mode VIV was found to be an inclined figure of eight shape, while other single mode VIVs behaved in ellipse or straight line trajectories. For multi-mode VIVs, no stable vibration trajectories were found to exist since the vibration frequency bands covered two or more vibration modes. The vortex-shedding frequencies in the wake behind the inclined cable were also characterized in the present study. The shedding frequencies of the wake vortices were found to coincide well with the vibration modes: for a single mode VIV, they were close to the dominant vibration mode; for a multi-mode VIV, they could also cover the appearing vibration modes.

In this paper it is demonstrated how a contour dynamics method can be used to simulate the behaviour of vortices in the presence of non-uniform background vorticity in general, and on the γ-plane in particular. For standard contour dynamics in case of zero, or uniform background vorticity, the initial continuous vorticity distributions of the vortices are replaced by appropriate piecewise-uniform distributions. Then, the evolution of the contours separating the several regions of uniform vorticity, are followed in time. In the case of non-uniform background vorticity, it is necessary to replace the sum of the (relative) vorticity of the vortices and the background vorticity by a piecewise-uniform distribution. This has several consequences for applying the method of contour dynamics, which are discussed in this paper. The resulting method is tested on some numerical examples. One of them is (qualitatively) compared with laboratory experiments carried out in a rotating tank.

Many technologies based on fluid–structure interaction mechanisms are being developed to harvest energy from geophysical flows. The velocity of such flows is low, and so is their energy density. Large systems are therefore required to extract a significant amount of energy. The question of the efficiency of energy harvesting using vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) of cables is addressed in this paper, through two reference configurations: (i) a long tensioned cable with periodically-distributed harvesters and (ii) a hanging cable with a single harvester at its upper extremity. After validation against either direct numerical simulations or experiments, an appropriate reduced-order wake-oscillator model is used to perform parametric studies of the impact of the harvesting parameters on the efficiency. For both configurations, an optimal set of parameters is identified and it is shown that the maximum efficiency is close to the value reached with an elastically-mounted rigid cylinder. The variability of the efficiency is studied in light of the fundamental properties of each configuration, i.e. body flexibility and gravity-induced spatial variation of the tension. In the periodically-distributed harvester configuration, it is found that the standing-wave nature of the vibration and structural mode selection plays a central role in energy extraction. In contrast, the efficiency of the hanging cable is essentially driven by the occurrence of traveling wave vibrations.

This paper addresses the interaction of a slender structure and a sheared incident cross-flow. The oscillating wake of the structure is modeled using a distribution of van der Pol oscillators. Elementary configurations are first considered to assess the basic phenomena and structure dynamics allowing to reliably investigate more complex and realistic cases. The scope of the study thus ranges from a forced oscillating cylinder to a tensioned cable. This last configuration is found to experience wave-packets of vortex-induced motion due to a series of local lock-ins. A theoretical analysis is carried-out to predict the wave-packets amplitude and distribution. It is shown to be in reasonable agreement with the results of numerical simulations. This indicates that the system behavior can be described in terms of the local interactions between the wake and the structure only.

The aerial refueling hose-and-drogue system is a special case of a generalized aerial cable towed system. The present work investigates the effect of pertinent parameters such as the cable tension, tow point disturbance and vortex wake on the dynamic behavior and stability of the generalized model by using the finite element method with an accurate and computationally efficient three-noded, curved beam element. The analysis results show that the conventional modal and spectrum analysis method is inappropriate for the dynamic stability analysis of the aerial cable towed system. This is because the mechanism of instability due to the tow point disturbance is not the resonance of the aerial cable towed system but the wave propagation downstream along the cable absorbing energy from the airflow when the wave propagation speed is less than the airflow speed. The study also demonstrates that the vortex wake has a significant impact on the dynamics of the aerial cable towed system. The short cable system will orbit with the vortex and the orbiting behavior will diminish as the cable length increases.

A nonlinear time-domain simulation model for predicting two-dimensional vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a flexibly mounted circular cylinder in planar and oscillatory flow is presented. This model is based on the utilization of van der Pol wake oscillators, being unconventional since wake oscillators have typically been applied to steady flow VIV predictions. The time-varying relative flow–cylinder velocities and accelerations are accounted for in deriving the coupled hydrodynamic lift, drag and inertia forces leading to the cylinder cross-flow and in-line oscillations. The system fluid–structure interaction equations explicitly contain the time-dependent and hybrid trigonometric terms. Depending on the Keulegan–Carpenter number (KC) incorporating the flow maximum velocity and excitation frequency, the model calibration is performed, entailing a set of empirical coefficients and expressions as a function of KC and mass ratio. Parametric investigations in cases of varying KC, reduced flow velocity, cylinder-to-flow frequency ratio and mass ratio are carried out, capturing some qualitative features of oscillatory flow VIV and exploring the effects of system parameters on response prediction characteristics. The model dependence of hydrodynamic coefficients on the Reynolds number is studied. Discrepancies and limitations versus advantages of the present model with different feasible solution scenarios are illuminated to inform the implementation of wake oscillators as a computationally efficient prediction model for VIV in oscillatory flows.

Complementary experimental studies have been conducted with a vibrissa-shaped cylinder at different angles of attack, through vortex-induced vibration (VIV) test in a wind tunnel, along with extensive measurements of wake dynamics in a water channel using time-resolved particle image velocimetry (TR-PIV). The VIV responses of an elastically mounted vibrissa-shaped cylinder are experimentally compared at various angles of attack in the range of θ = 0°–90°. At the reduced velocity of U0/f0Dh = 3–10 (f0 being the system's natural frequency), the cross-flow displacement of the cylinders convincingly demonstrates that the vibrissa-shaped cylinder at a small angle of attack (θ ≤ 30°) is stable, and without appreciable displacement. Beyond θ = 30°, a prominent three-branched VIV response is readily identified, and increasing the angle of attack results in an upward shift of the synchronized region and a considerable intensification of the peak amplitude. Subsequently, TR-PIV measurements are made of the wake flow behind the vibrissa-shaped cylinder, to determine the spatio-temporally varying flow fields in two spanwise planes, i.e., the saddle and the nodal planes. Four systems with different angles of attack are chosen for comparison at ReD = 1.8 × 103, i.e., θ = 0°, 30°, 60° and 90°. In the two systems with θ = 0° and 30°, the wake regions feature weak velocity fluctuations in highly limited areas. However, increasing the angles of attack (to θ = 60° and 90°) gives rise to expanded recirculation zones, highly unstable flow reversals immediately behind the cylinder, and strengthened velocity fluctuations in the bulk wake regions. Cross-correlation of the fluctuating longitudinal velocities shows that at θ = 60° and 90° the energetic large-scale vortical structures form earlier, and they exert considerable influence on the near-wake fluid behind the cylinder. Finally, a sophisticated data-driven dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) process is used to extract the dominant unsteady structures in the four systems with different angles of attack. In the system with θ = 0°, two dominant DMD modes at frequencies St= 0.23 and 0.30 are identified in the saddle and the nodal planes, respectively, and those frequencies are St= 0.18 and 0.19 in the system with θ = 30°. The interaction between these dominant events at different frequencies tends to disrupt the formation of a strong vortex-shedding process. Therefore, the hydrodynamic force on the cylinder does not make a concerted contribution to suppressing the VIV behavior along the spanwise direction. In the systems with θ = 60° and 90°, the corresponding DMD modes exhibit much more synchronous, organized characteristics in the saddle and nodal planes, and unsteady events at the same frequencies are detected in both planes, reaching St = 0.14 (for θ = 60°) and 0.12 (for θ = 90°). These effects, along with the intensified vortex-shedding processes in the saddle and nodal planes, exert a concerted hydrodynamic force on the cylinder, causing it to start with an oscillatory state.

We present a numerical study of the turbulent kinetic energy budget in the wake of cylinders undergoing Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV). We show three-dimensional Large Eddy Simulations (LES) of an elastically mounted circular cylinder in the synchronization regime at Reynolds number of Re=8000. The Immersed Boundary Method (IBM) is used to account for the presence of the cylinder. The flow field in the wake is decomposed using the triple decomposition splitting the flow variables in mean, coherent and stochastic components. The energy transfer between these scales of motions are then studied and the results of the free oscillation are compared to those of a forced oscillation. The turbulent kinetic energy budget shows that the maximum amplitude of VIV is defined by the ability of the mean flow to feed energy to the coherent structures in the wake. At amplitudes above this maximum amplitude, the energy of the coherent structures needs to be fed additionally by small scale, stochastic energy in form of backscatter to sustain its motion. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the maximum amplitude of the VIV is defined by the integral length scale of the turbulence in the wake.

Simultaneous measurements of the response of a circular cylinder experiencing vortex-induced vibrations (VIVs) in the streamwise direction and the resulting wake field were performed for a range of reduced velocities using time-resolved Particle-Image Velocimetry in the Reynolds number range 450–3700. The dominant vortex shedding mode was identified using phase-averaged vorticity fields. The cylinder response amplitude was characterised by two response branches, separated by a low amplitude region at resonance, as has been previously reported in the literature. During the first response branch the wake exhibited not only the symmetric S-I mode, but also the alternate A-II mode at slightly higher reduced velocities. For both modes, the vortices were observed to be shed at the cylinder response frequency, but rearranged downstream into a more stable structure in which the velocity fluctuations were no longer synchronised to the cylinder motion. A special case of the A-II mode, referred to as the SA mode, was found to dominate in the second response branch and the low amplitude region, while the far wake and the cylinder motion were synchronised (lock-in). A change in the timing of the vortex shedding with respect to the cylinder motion was observed between the low amplitude region and the second response branch. This is likely to correspond to a change in the fluid forcing and levels of excitation, and may explain the variation in the cylinder amplitude observed in this region. Lock-in and the second response branch were found to coincide with a contraction of the wake and an increase in strength of the shed vortices. This work reveals the inherent differences between the extensively studied case of transverse-only VIV and the streamwise-only case, which is crucial if the wealth of information available on transverse VIV is to be extended to the more practical two degree-of-freedom case.

The purpose of this paper is to present formulations for beam elements based on the absolute nodal co-ordinate formulation that can be effectively and efficiently used in the case of thin structural applications. The numerically stiff behaviour resulting from shear terms in existing absolute nodal co-ordinate formulation beam elements that employ the continuum mechanics approach to formulate the elastic forces and the resulting locking phenomenon make these elements less attractive for slender stiff structures. In this investigation, additional shape functions are introduced for an existing spatial absolute nodal co-ordinate formulation beam element in order to obtain higher accuracy when the continuum mechanics approach is used to formulate the elastic forces. For thin structures where bending stiffness can be important in some applications, a lower order cable element is introduced and the performance of this cable element is evaluated by comparing it with existing formulations using several examples. Cables that experience low tension or catenary systems where bending stiffness has an effect on the wave propagation are examples in which the low order cable element can be used. The cable element, which does not have torsional stiffness, can be effectively used in many problems such as in the formulation of the sliding joints in applications such as the spatial pantograph/catenary systems. The numerical study presented in this paper shows that the use of existing implicit time integration methods enables the simulation of multibody systems with a moderate number of thin and stiff finite elements in reasonable CPU time.

An isolated two-dimensional circular cylinder with two linear degrees of freedom, parallel and perpendicular to the free-stream direction, and owning a nonlinear energy sink (NES) is investigated by fluid–structure interaction (FSI) simulations to assess vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) at moderate Reynolds numbers. Subsequently, the wake-induced vibration (WIV) of a pair of identical cylinders under the action of two NES in a tandem arrangement and in a proximity–wake interference regime is explored using the same approach. The NES parameters (mass, nonlinear stiffness and damping) are investigated to determine their effects on the dynamic response of a single degree of freedom (in transverse flow direction) coupled system by a reduced-order model based on an experimentally validated van der Pol oscillator. The CFD model coupled with FSI method is also validated against VIV experimental data for an isolated cylinder in a uniform flow. The study is aimed to investigate the effect of the passive suppression NES device on VIV and WIV. The amplitude response, trajectories of cylinder motion and temporal evolutions of vortex shedding are obtained by conducting a series of numerical simulations. It is found that placing a tuned NES in the cylinders can provide good suppression effect; however, the effectiveness is function of the reduced velocity.
