In this paper, transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) in anisothermal single as well as double transformations (austenite  bainite and austenite  bainite + Martensite) in 16MND5 steel is experimentally analyzed. Several investigations have been performed related mainly on: (a) the evaluation of the physical mechanism responsible of the TRIP in bainitic transformation; (b) the kinetics of TRIP and its specificity in a double transformation; (c) the consequence when the load is applied during only a part of phase transformation; (d) the interaction between TRIP and classical plasticity and so on. The results seem indicate that Greenwood and Johnson mechanism is dominant compared to Magee mechanism. The interaction between classical plasticity and TRIP is clearly demonstrated and it seems that the strain hardening state of the parent phase plays an important role in the TRIP progress. Due to such interaction, TRIP appears even in the absence of external applied load; the behavior depends strongly on the transformation under consideration (bainitic or martensitic). From a modeling point of view, it is shown that Leblond’s model that is the only one “industrial” model which enables qualitatively to account for such interactions, fails to predict the observed phenomena especially in martensitic transformation.  相似文献

The bulge test is a particularly convenient testing method for characterizing elastomers under biaxial loading. In addition, it is convenient to utilize this test for validating material models in simulation due to the heterogeneous strain field induced during inflation. During the bulge test the strain field for elastomers covers uniaxial tension at the border to pure shear and equibiaxial tension at the pole. Elastomeric materials exhibit a hyperelastic material behavior, with a dependency on temperature and loading rate. The temperature effect on the mechanical behavior during biaxial loading is considered in the present study. A bulge test setup combined with a temperature chamber is developed in order to characterize this effect, and an exemplary temperature dependent characterization of a poly(norbornene) elastomer is performed with this setup. The equibiaxial stress–strain curves measured at 60 °C, 20 °C and −20 °C are presented.  相似文献

“To what extent do plastic strain gradients affect the strengthening resulting from the transformation of small metastable inclusions into hard inclusions within a plastically deforming matrix?” is the central question addressed here. Though general in the approach, the focus is on the behavior of TRIP-assisted multiphase steels. A two-dimensional embedded cell model of a simplified microstructure composed of a single metastable austenitic inclusion surrounded by a soft ferritic matrix is considered. The cell is inserted in a large homogenized medium. The transformation of a fraction of the austenite into a hard martensite plate is simulated, accounting for a transformation strain, and leading to complex elastic and plastic accommodation. The size of a transforming plate in real multiphase steels is typically between 0.1 and 2 μm, a range of size in which plastic strain gradient effects are expected to play a major role. The single parameter version of the Fleck–Hutchinson strain gradient plasticity theory is used to describe the plasticity in the austenite, ferrite and martensite phases. The higher order boundary conditions imposed on the plastic flow have a large impact on the predicted strengthening. Using realistic values of the intrinsic length parameter setting the scale at which the gradients effects have an influence leads to a noticeable increase of the strengthening on top of the increase due to the transformation of a volume fraction of the retained austenite. The geometrical parameters such as the volume fraction of retained austenite and of the transforming zone also bring significant strengthening. Strain gradient effects also significantly affect the stress state inside the martensite plate during and after transformation with a potential impact on the damage resistance of these steels.  相似文献

We consider a viscoelastic filament placed between two coaxial discs, with the bottom plate fixed and the top plate pulled at an exponential rate. Using a slender rod approximation, we derive a one-dimensional (1-D) model which describes the deformation of a viscoelastic filament governed by the Oldroyd-B constitutive model. It is assumed that the flow is axisymmetric and that inertia and gravity are negligible. One solution of the model equations corresponds to ideal uniaxial elongation. A linear stability analysis shows that this solution is unstable for a Newtonian fluid and for viscoelastic filaments with small Deborah number (De  0.5). For Deborah number greater than 0.5, ideal uniaxial elongation is linearly stable. Numerical solution of the nonlinear equations confirms the result of the linear stability analysis. For initial conditions close to ideal uniaxial flow, our results show that if De > 0.5, the central portion of the filament undergoes considerable strain hardening. As a result, the sample remains almost cylindrical and the deformation approaches pure uniaxial extension as the Hencky strain increases. For De  0.5, the Trouton ratio based on the effective extension rate at the mid-plane radius gives a much better approximation to the true extensional viscosity than that based on the imposed stretch rate.  相似文献

Cables (or wire ropes) made from NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) wires are relatively new and unexplored structural elements that combine many of the advantages of conventional cables with the adaptive properties of SMAs (shape memory and superelasticity) and have a broad range of potential applications. In this two part series, an extensive set of uniaxial tension experiments was performed on two Nitinol cable constructions, a 7 × 7 right regular lay and a 1 × 27 alternating lay, to characterize their superelastic behavior in room temperature air. Details of the evolution of strain and temperature fields were captured by simultaneous stereo digital image correlation and infrared imaging, respectively. Here in Part I, the nearly isothermal, superelastic responses of the two cable designs are presented and compared. Overall, the 7 × 7 construction has a mechanical response similar to that of straight wires with propagating transformation fronts and distinct stress plateaus during stress-induced transformations. The 1 × 27 construction, however, exhibits a more compliant and stable mechanical response, trading a decreased force for additional elongation, and does not exhibit transformation fronts due to the deeper helix angles of the layers. In Part II that follows, selected subcomponents are dissected from the two cable’s hierarchical constructions to experimentally break down the cable’s responses.  相似文献

This paper presents and analyzes the behaviour of TRIP 1000 steel sheets subjected to low velocity perforation by conical projectiles. The relevance of this material resides in the potential transformation of retained austenite to martensite during impact loading. This process leads to an increase in strength and ductility of the material. However, this transformation takes place only under certain loading conditions strongly dependent on the initial temperature and deformation rate. In order to study the material behaviour under impact loading, perforation tests have been performed using a drop weight tower. Experiments were carried out at two different initial temperatures T0 = 213 K and T0 = 288 K, and within the range of impact velocities 2.5 m/s ? V0 ? 4.5 m/s. The experimental setup enabled the measuring of impact velocity, residual velocity, load-time history and failure mode. In addition, dry and lubricated contacts between the striker and the plate have been investigated. Finally, by using X-ray diffraction it has been shown that no martensitic transformation takes place during the perforation process. The causes involving the none-appearance of martensite are examined.  相似文献

A comprehensive study of the thermo-mechanical response of a thermoplastic polymer, nylon 101 is presented. Quasi-static and dynamic compression uniaxial and multi-axial experiments (stress states) were performed at a wide range of strain rates (10−5 to 5000 s−1) and temperatures (−60 to 177 °C or −76 to 350 °F). The material is found to be non-linearly dependent on strain rate and temperature. The change in volume after plastic deformation is investigated and is found to be negligibly small. The relaxation and creep responses at room temperature are found to be dependent on strain rate and the stress–strain level at which these phenomena are initiated. Total deformation is decomposed into visco-elastic and visco-plastic components; these components have been determined at different levels of deformation. Results from non-proportional uniaxial to biaxial compression, and torsion experiments, are also reported for three different strain rates at room temperature. It is shown that nylon 101 has a response dependent on the hydrostatic pressure.  相似文献

The notion of functionally graded materials (FGM) covers all domains of discrete and smooth gradation of material microstructure designed in order to obtain macroscopic features suitable for a given application. A special class of multi-phase materials with graded microstructure can be obtained at cryogenic temperatures as a result of smooth transition from the parent phase to the secondary phase. The required continuously graded material features are obtained at low temperatures via the mechanism of controlled strain induced phase transformation from the purely austenitic to the martensitic lattice (γ  α′). Several families of ductile materials are known to behave in a metastable way when strained at very low temperatures. Among them the austenitic stainless steels are extensively used to construct components of the superconducting magnets, cryogenic transfer lines and other structural members loaded in cryogenic conditions. The constitutive model used to describe mathematically the plastic strain induced phase transformation at low temperatures involves strain hardening where two fundamental effects play an important role: interaction of dislocations with the martensite inclusions and increase in material tangent stiffness due to the mixture of harder martensite with softer austenite. The interaction of dislocations with the martensite inclusions is reflected by the hardening modulus that depends on the volume fraction of martensite. Here, a linear approximation, based on the micro-mechanics analysis, is used. On the other hand, evaluation of the material tangent stiffness of two-phase continuum is based on the classical homogenization scheme and takes into account the local tangent moduli of the components, as postulated by Hill [Hill, R., 1965. A self consistent mechanics of composite materials. J. Mech. Phys. Solids 13, 213–222]. In the present paper, the Mori–Tanaka homogenisation scheme is applied. Both effects contribute to strong nonlinear hardening that occurs as soon as the phase transformation process begins. The material model is suitable for a wide range of temperatures, however the best results are obtained at very low temperatures, where the linearized kinetic law of phase transformation is valid [Garion, C., Skoczeń B., 2002. Modeling of plastic strain induced martensitic transformation for cryogenic applications. J. Appl. Mech. 69 (6), 755–762]. As the application field the structural members in the form of rods (cylinders) of circular cross-section, used as parts of the carrying structures, are analyzed. The required graded microstructure of the material is obtained by imposing torsion at cryogenic temperatures. Both the intensity of the phase transformation and the depth of the transformed zone is obtained by suitable kinematic control (angle of twist). The closed form solutions for the stress state and torque as a function of the angle of twist are shown.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal variations of channel wall temperature during flow boiling microchannel flows using infrared thermography are presented and analyzed. In particular, the top channel wall temperature in a branching microchannel silicon heat sink is measured non-intrusively. Using this technique, time-averaged temperature measurements, with a spatial resolution of 10 μm, are presented over an 18 mm × 18 mm area of the heat sink. Also presented, within a specific sub-region of the heat sink, are intensity maps that are recorded at a rate of 120 frames per second. Time series data at selected point locations in this sub-region are analyzed for their frequency content, and dominant temperature fluctuations are extracted using proper orthogonal decomposition. Results at low-vapor-quality boiling condition indicate that temperatures can be determined from recorded radiation intensities with a temperature uncertainty varying from 0.9 °C at 25 °C to 1.0 °C at 125 °C. The time series data indicate periodic wall temperature fluctuations of approximately 2 °C that are attributed to the passage of vapor slugs. A dominant band of frequencies around 2–4 Hz is suggested by the frequency analysis. Proper orthogonal decomposition results indicate that first six orthogonal modes account for approximately 90% of the variance in temperature. The first mode reconstruction accounts for temporal variations in the dataset in the sub-region analyzed; however the magnitude of fluctuations and spatial variations in temperature are not accurately captured. A reconstruction using the first 25 modes is considered sufficient to capture both the temporal and spatial variations in the data.  相似文献

A combined experimental and analytical investigation has been performed to understand the mechanical behavior of two amorphous polymers—polycarbonate and poly(methyl methacrylate)—at strain rates ranging from 10−4 to 104 s−1. This range in strain rates was achieved in uniaxial tension and compression tests using a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA), a servo-hydraulic testing machine, and an aluminum split-Hopkinson pressure bar. DMA tension tests were used to characterize the viscoelastic behavior of these materials, with focus on the rate-dependent shift of material transition temperatures. Uniaxial compression tests on the servo-hydraulic machine (10−4 to 1 s−1) and the split-Hopkinson pressure bar (103 to 104 s−1) were used to characterize the rate-dependent yield and post-yield behavior. Both materials were observed to exhibit increased rate sensitivity of yield under the same strain rate/temperature conditions as the β-transition of the viscoelastic behavior. A physically based constitutive model for large strain deformation of thermoplastics was then extended to encompass high-rate conditions. The model accounts for the contributions of different molecular motions which become operational and important in different frequency regimes. The new features enable the model to not only capture the transition in the yield behavior, but also accurately predict the post-yield, large strain behavior over a wide range of temperatures and strain rates.  相似文献

This work investigates the effect of the Austenite Grain Size (AGS) on the thermo-mechanical behavior of 35NiCrMo16 steel during the martensitic transformation under complex loading. Particularly in view of some thermal cycles, we analyzed the evolution of the austenite grain size under different austenitizing conditions. Using the same temperature-holding time parameters, we performed a series of experiments to assess the Transformation-Induced Plasticity (TRIP) under uniaxial (tension or torsion) and biaxial (tension + torsion) loading. The results suggest that the uniaxial torsion loading case, Transformation-Induced Plasticity does not depend on the prior Austenite Grain Size (AGS) whereas, in the uniaxial tension loading case, it is a “slightly” increasing function of the AGS.  相似文献

The mechanisms for heterogeneous cubic  tetragonal martensite nucleation due to different types of microscopic defects (voids, stress-concentration site, inertial inclusion and pre-existing nucleus) and the temporal evolution of martensite morphology are monitored with finite element simulation of phase filed model. The results demonstrate that the nucleation prefers to occur around void and stress-concentration site initially; high residual stress exists around inertial inclusion; pre-existing nucleus promotes nearby martensite phase to develop on it. The effects of various defects on heterogeneous nucleation are different, and stress relaxation behavior is the dominant factor which characterizes the whole microstructure evolution process.  相似文献

Void growth and coalescence in fcc single crystals were studied using crystal plasticity under uniaxial and biaxial loading conditions and various orientations of the crystalline lattice. A 2D plane strain unit cell with one and two cylindrical voids was employed using three-dimensional 12 potentially active slip systems. The results were compared to five representative orientations of the tensile axis on the stereographic triangle. For uniaxial tension conditions, the void volume fraction increase under the applied load is strongly dependent on the crystallographic orientation with respect to the tensile axis. For some orientations of the tensile axis, such as [1 0 0] or [1 1 0], the voids exhibited a growth rate twice as fast compared with other orientations ([1 0 0], [2 1 1]). Void growth and coalescence simulations under uniaxial loading indicated that during deformation along some orientations with asymmetry of the slip systems, the voids experienced rotation and shape distortion, due mainly to lattice reorientation. Coalescence effects are shown to diminish the influence of lattice orientation on the void volume fraction increase, but noteworthy differences are still present. Under biaxial loading conditions, practically all differences in the void volume fraction for different orientations of the tensile axes during void growth vanish. These results lead to the conclusion that at microstructural length scales in regions under intense biaxiality/triaxiality conditions, such as crack tip or notched regions, the plastic anisotropy due to the initial lattice orientation has only a minor role in influencing the void growth rate. In such situations, void growth and coalescence are mainly determined by the stress triaxiality, the magnitude of accumulated strain, and the spatial localization of such plastic strains.  相似文献

Observations are reported on high-density polyethylene in uniaxial tensile tests with constant strain rates and relaxation tests at various temperatures ranging from 25 to 90 °C. A constitutive model is derived for the nonlinear viscoelastic and viscoplastic behavior of semi-crystalline polymers at three-dimensional deformations. Adjustable parameters in the stress–strain relations are found by fitting the experimental data. It is demonstrated that (i) the model correctly approximates the observations and (ii) material parameters are independent of strain rate and change consistently with temperature.  相似文献

High-speed experiments were conducted to characterize the deformation and failure of Styrene Butadiene Rubber at impact rates. Dynamic tensile stress–strain curves of uniaxial strip specimens and force–extension curves of thin sheets were obtained from a Charpy tensile impact apparatus. Results from the uniaxial tension tests indicated that although the rubber became stiffer with increasing strain rates, the stress–strain curves remained virtually the same above 280 s−1. Above this critical strain rate, strength, fracture strain and toughness decreased with increasing strain rates. When strain rates were below 180 s−1, the initial modulus, tensile strength and breaking extension increased as the strain rate increased. Between strain rates of 180 and 280 s−1, the initial modulus and tensile strength increased with increasing strain rates but the extension at break decreased with increasing strain rates. A hyper-viscoelastic constitutive relation of integral form was used to describe the rate-dependent material behavior of the rubber. Two characteristic relaxation times, 5 ms and 0.25 ms, were needed to fit the proposed constitutive equation to the data. The proposed constitutive equation was implemented in ABAQUS Explicit via a user-defined subroutine and used to predict the dynamic response of the rubber sheets in the experiments. Numerical predictions for the transient deformation and failure of the rubber sheet were within 10% of experimental results.  相似文献

Previous experiments have shown that the distinct features of macro-martensitic band nucleation and propagation in micro-tube under tension are in three stages: the initiation and propagation of a single helical band  self-merging  propagation of the cylindrical band. In this paper, the martensitic formation and helical band propagation in the tube at different temperatures are modeled. The free energy function of the tube is formulated by introducing an equivalent method to calculate the stress and strain disturbances in the helical martensitic domain, and the phase transformation criterion is derived based on thermodynamics. The simulations successfully capture the main features of nucleation, pattern evolution and variation of front velocity of the helical martensitic band in the tube. The analytical results and the comparison with experiments are also discussed in this paper.  相似文献

This study proposes an improved physical model to predict sand deposition at high temperature in gas turbine components. This model differs from its predecessor (Sreedharan and Tafti, 2011) by improving the sticking probability by accounting for the energy losses during particle-wall collision based on our previous work (Singh and Tafti, 2013). This model predicts the probability of sticking based on the critical viscosity approach and collision losses during a particle–wall collision. The current model is novel in the sense that it predicts the sticking probability based on the impact velocity along with the particle temperature. To test the model, deposition from a sand particle laden jet impacting on a flat coupon geometry is computed and the results obtained from the numerical model are compared with experiments (Delimont et al., 2014) conducted at Virginia Tech, on a similar geometry and flow conditions, for jet temperatures of 950 °C, 1000 °C and 1050 °C. Large Eddy Simulations (LES) are used to model the flow field and heat transfer, and sand particles are modeled using a discrete Lagrangian framework. Results quantify the impingement and deposition for 20–40 μm sand particles. The stagnation region of the target coupon is found to experience most of the impingement and deposition. For 950 °C jet temperature, around 5% of the particle impacting the coupon deposit while the deposition for 1000 °C and 1050 °C is 17% and 28%, respectively. In general, the sticking efficiencies calculated from the model show good agreement with the experiments for the temperature range considered.  相似文献

Metal forming processes are important technologies for the production of engineering structures. In order to optimize the resulting material properties, it becomes necessary to simulate the entire forming process by taking into account physical effects such as phase transformations. In this work, we concentrate on the phase change from austenite to martensite and present a macroscopic material model, which combines the effect of classical plasticity with the effect of transformation induced plasticity (TRIP). An extensive experimental database for a low-alloy steel is used for parameter identification, thus taking into account the effects of uniaxial compressive and tensile stress on the kinetics of phase transformation at different temperatures. For temperatures below the martensite start temperature with simultaneous stresses above the yield limit, it is difficult to obtain experimental data. Consequently, a numerical homogenization technique is employed for this case. In a further part of this paper, an effective integration scheme is provided, which is implemented into a commercial finite element program. In a finite element simulation, the austenite to martensite phase transformation in a shaft subjected to thermal loading is investigated.  相似文献

Extrudate swell is a common phenomenon observed in the polymer extrusion industry. Accurate prediction of the dimensions of an extrudate is important for appropriate design of dies for profile extrusion applications. Prediction of extrudate swell has been challenging due to (i) difficulties associated with accurate representation of the constitutive behavior of polymer melts, and (ii) difficulties associated with the simulation of free surfaces, which requires special techniques in the traditionally used Eulerian framework. In a previous work we had argued that an Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) based finite element formulation may have advantages in simulating free surface deformations such as in extrudate swell. In the present work we reinforce this argument by comparing our ALE simulations with experimental data on the extrudate swell of commercial grades of linear polyethylene (LLDPE) and branched polyethylene (LDPE). Rheological behavior of the polymers was characterized in shear and uniaxial extensional deformations, and the data was modeled using either the Phan–Thien Tanner (PTT) model or the eXtended Pom–Pom (XPP) model. Additionally, flow birefringence and pressure drop measurements were done using a 10:1 contraction–expansion (CE) slit geometry in a MultiPass Rheometer. Simulated pressure drop and contours of the principal stress difference were compared with experimental data and were found to match well. This provided an independent test for the accuracy of the ALE code and the constitutive equations for simulating a processing-like flow. The polymers were extruded from long (L/D = 30) and short (L/D = 10) capillaries dies at 190 °C. ALE simulations were performed for the same extrusion conditions and the simulated extrudate swell showed good agreement with the experimental data.  相似文献

Most liquid metals are easily oxidized, causing their surface tensions to vary over time. In this study, a novel method for measuring the dynamic surface tension of a liquid metal during oxidization is proposed. This method is based on the fact that the descent trajectory of a capillary jet ejected horizontally from a small orifice at slow speed depends on the surface tension as well as inertial and gravitational forces. We derive a theoretical model to predict the jet trajectory and determine the dynamic surface tension of the liquid metal by matching the predicted theoretical trajectory to the experimentally measured one. Actual measurements for Wood's alloy at various oxygen concentrations demonstrate that the surface tension decreases to an equilibrium value on a time scale of 10–11 ms at oxygen densities of less than 1.5%, whereas it increases on a time scale of 10–17 ms at greater oxygen densities. This method has the ability to measure dynamic surface tension on a time scale of 1.5–55 ms at an accuracy of ±1.5 ms, making it suitable for measuring the dynamic surface tension of liquid metal in an oxidation process.  相似文献
