This paper reports an experimental investigation of open channel turbulent flow over hemispherical ribs. A row of ribs consists of hemispheres closely placed to one another in the spanwise direction and cover the entire span of the channel. The pitch-to-height ratio is varied to achieve the so-called d-type, intermediate and k-type roughness. The Reynolds numbers based on water depth, h, and momentum thickness, θ, of the approach flow are respectively, Reh = 28,100 and Reθ = 1800. A particle image velocimetry is used to obtain detailed velocity measurements in and above the cavity. Streamlines, mean velocity and time-averaged turbulent statistics are used to study the effects of pitch-to-height ratio on the flow characteristics and also to document similarities and differences between the present work and prior studies over two-dimensional transverse rods. It was observed that interaction between the outer flow and the shear layers generated by ribs is strongest for k-type and least for d-type ribs. The results also show that hemispherical ribs are less effective in augmenting flow resistance compared to two-dimensional transverse ribs. The levels of the Reynolds stresses and budget terms increase with increasing pitch-to-height ratio inside the roughness sublayer.  相似文献

The two dimensional impinging circular twin-jet flow with no-cross flow is studied numerically and experimentally. The theoretical predications are carried out through numerical procedure based on finite volume method to solve the governing mass, momentum, turbulent kinetic energy and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate. The parameters studied were jet Reynolds number (9.5 × 104  Re  22.4 × 104), nozzle to plate spacing (3  h/d  12), nozzle to nozzle centerline spacing (l/d = 3, 5 and 8) and jet angle (0°  θ  20°). It is concluded that the stagnation primary point moves away in the radial main flow direction by increasing the jet angle. This shift becomes stronger by increasing the nozzle to nozzle centerline spacing (l/d). A secondary stagnation point is set up between two jets. The value of pressure at this point decreases by decreasing Reynolds number and/or increasing the jet angle.

The sub atmospheric region occurs on the impingement plate. It increases strongly by increasing Reynolds number and decreases as the jet angle and/or a nozzle to plate spacing increases. The spreading of jet decreases by increasing nozzle to plate spacing. The intensity of re-circulation zone between two jets decreases by increasing of h/d and jet angle. The increase of turbulence kinetic energy occurs within high gradient velocity.  相似文献

Turbulent mixing takes an important role in chemical engineering, especially when the chemical reaction is fast compared to the mixing time. In this context a detailed knowledge of the flow field, the distribution of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) and its dissipation rate is important, as these quantities are used for many mixing models. For this reason we conduct a direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a confined impinging jet reactor (CIJR) at Re = 500 and Sc = 1. The data is compared with particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements and the basic flow features match between simulation and experiment. The DNS data is analysed and it is shown that the flow is dominated by a stable vortex in the main mixing duct. High intensities of turbulent kinetic energy and dissipation are found in the impingement zone which decrease rapidly towards the exit of the CIJR. In the whole CIJR the turbulence is not in equilibrium. The strong mixing in the impingement zone leads to a rapid development of a monomodal PDF. Due to the special properties of the flow field, a bimodal PDF is generated in cross-sections downstream the impingement zone, that slowly relaxes under relaminarising conditions. The time required for meso-mixing is dominating the overall mixing performance.  相似文献

The mechanisms of laminarization in wall-bounded flows have been investigated by performing direct numerical simulations (DNS) of turbulent channel flows. By decreasing Reynolds numbers systematically, the effects of the low Reynolds number are studied in connection with the near-wall turbulent structure and turbulent statistics. At approximately the critical Reynolds number, the turbulent skin friction is reduced, and the turbulent structure changes qualitatively in the very near-wall region. Instantaneous turbulent structures reveal that streamwise vortices, the cores of which are at y+ 10, disappear, although low speed streaks and Reynolds shear stress are still produced by larger streamwise vortices located in the buffer region y+ > 10. Sweep motions induced by these vortical structures are shifted toward the center of a channel and also significantly deterred, which may heighten the effects of the viscous sublayer over most of the channel section and suppress the regeneration mechanisms of new streamwise vortices in the very near-wall region. To investigate the details of how large-scale coherent vortices affect the viscous sublayer and the relevant small-scale streamwise vortices, a body force is virtually imposed in the wall-normal direction to enhance the large streamwise vortices. As a result, it is found that when they are sufficiently enhanced, the small-scale vortices reappear, and the sweep events are again dominant in the viscous sublayer.  相似文献

The article discusses turbulent heat transfer in media with small Prandtl numbers (Pr?1 for liquid metals). In this case, the thermal sublayer is Pr-1 times thicker than the viscous sublayer. It is established that the coefficient of turbulent heat transfer varies in the thermal sublayer proportionally to the second power of the distance to the wall; the ratio of the coefficients of the turbulent transfer of heat and momentum in this region decreases in accordance with a linear law with approach to the wall. The conclusions of the theory are compared with the experimental data of other authors.  相似文献

This paper discusses experimental results from a multiple cavity test rig representative of a high pressure compressor internal air system. Measurements of the axial, tangential and radial velocity components are presented. These were made using a two component, laser doppler anemometry (LDA) system for a range of non-dimensional parameters representative of engine conditions (Re up to 4 × 106 and Rez up to 1.8 × 105). Tests were carried out for two different sizes of annular gap between the (non-rotating) drive shaft and the disc bores.

The axial and radial velocities inside the cavities are virtually zero. The size of the annular gap between disc bore and shaft has a significant effect on the radial distribution of tangential velocity. For the narrow annular gap (dh/b = 0.092), there is an increase of non-dimensional tangential velocity V/Ωr with radial location from V/Ωr < 1 at the lower radii to solid body rotation V/Ωr = 1 further into the cavity. For the wider annular gap (dh/b = 0.164), there is a decrease from V/Ωr > 1 at the lower radii to solid body rotation further into the cavity. An analysis of the frequency spectrum obtained from the tangential velocity measurements is consistent with a flow structure in the r plane consisting of pairs of contra rotating vortices.  相似文献

The results of an experimental study of a temperature field and its statistical characteristics in turbulent water flow upon a sudden change of heat generation in the channel wall are reported. Measurements were performed in 5 mm × 40 mm, 10 mm × 40 mm, and 20 mm × 40 mm channels in the regions of thermal stabilization and stabilized heat transfer at Reynolds numbers of (0.8–6.8) × 104. The measurement results are generalized using a dimensionless time scale. The results of the calculation of heat transfer coefficients at unsteady heat transfer are presented.  相似文献

Simultaneous measurements of the velocity and concentration field in fully developed turbulent flows over a wavy wall are described. The concentration field originates from a low-momentum plume of a passive tracer. PLIF and digital particle image velocimetry are used to make spatially resolved measurements of the structure of the scalar distribution and the velocity. The measurements are performed at three different Reynolds numbers of Re b = 5,600, Re b = 11,200 and Re b = 22,400, respectively, based on the bulk velocity u b and the total channel height 2h. The velocity field and the scalar field are investigated in a water channel with an aspect ratio of 12:1, where the bottom wall of the test section consists of a train of sinusoidal waves. The wavy wall is characterized by the amplitude to wavelength ratio α = 0.05 and the ratio β between the wave amplitude and the half channel height where β = 0.1. The scalar is released from a point source at the wave crest. For the concentration measurements, Rhodamine B is used as tracer dye. At low to moderate Reynolds number, the flow field is characterized through a recirculation zone which develops after the wave crest. The recirculation zone induces high intensities of the fluctuations of the streamwise velocity and wall-normal velocity. Furthermore, large-scale structures are apparent in the flow field. In previous investigations it has been shown that these large-scale structures meander laterally in flows over wavy bottom walls. The investigations show a strong effect of the wavy bottom wall on the scalar mixing. In the vicinity of the source, the scalar is transported by packets of fluid with a high scalar concentration. As they move downstream, these packets disintegrate into filament-like structures which are subject to strong gradients between the filaments and the surrounding fluid. The lateral scale of the turbulent plume is smaller than the lateral scale of the large-scale structures in the flow field and the plume dispersion is dominated by the structures in the flow field. Due to the lateral meandering of the large-scale structures of the flow field, also the scalar plume meanders laterally. Compared to turbulent plumes in plane channel flows, the wavy bottom wall enhances the mixing effect of the turbulent flow and the spreading rate of the scalar plume is increased.  相似文献

An experimental investigation is performed on a fully developed turbulent channel flow with local injection through a porous strip. The Reynolds number based on the channel half-width was set to 5000. In addition to the no blowing case, measurements are made for three different blowing rates σ = 0.22, 0.36 and 0.58 (where σ is the ratio of momentum flux gain due to the blowing and momentum flux of the incoming channel flow). Measurements carried out with hot-wire anemometry reveal that injection strongly affects both the velocity profiles and the turbulence characteristics. The injection decreases the skin friction coefficient and increases all the Reynolds stresses downstream the blowing strip. The turbulence structure and the bursting phenomena were examined using space-time correlations measurements and conditional analysis. It is found that the injection increases the frequency of occurrence of the bursts.  相似文献

 In a fully developed turbulent channel flow, the instantaneous wall shear gradient was measured simultaneously by an electrodiffusion (ED) probe and by laser-Doppler anemometry (LDA). The LDA measurements were done in the viscous sublayer and the linear velocity profile was used to calculate the instantaneous shear gradient at the wall. The electrodiffusion probe requires presence of a suitable electrolyte (e.g. an iodine and potassium-iodine aqueous solution) for reduction of the species on the working electrode (cathode). This results in a concentration gradient of the ions due to the convective diffusion of the [I3]- to the cathode. Due to the limited molecular diffusion rate and due to the dimension of the electrodiffusion probe its frequency resolution is limited. It is shown in which limits the correction of the signal on the concentration boundary layer inertia is not necessary and the probe can be used for measuring instantaneous wall shear gradients in turbulent flows. The results are compared with those obtained by LDA and elucidate the capability of the ED probe for measuring instantaneous shear rates at low Reynolds numbers. A direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a spatially developing turbulent boundary layer over a flat plate under zero pressure gradient (ZPG) has been carried out. The evolution of several passive scalars with both isoscalar and isoflux wall boundary condition are computed during the simulation. The Navier–Stokes equations as well as the scalar transport equation are solved using a fully spectral method. The highest Reynolds number based on the free-stream velocity U and momentum thickness θ is Reθ=830, and the molecular Prandtl numbers are 0.2, 0.71 and 2. To the authors’ knowledge, this Reynolds number is to date the highest with such a variety of scalars. A large number of turbulence statistics for both flow and scalar fields are obtained and compared when possible to existing experimental and numerical simulations at comparable Reynolds number. The main focus of the present paper is on the statistical behaviour of the scalars in the outer region of the boundary layer, distinctly different from the channel-flow simulations. Agreements as well as discrepancies are discussed while the influence of the molecular Prandtl number and wall boundary conditions is also highlighted. A Pr scaling for various quantities is proposed in outer scalings. In addition, spanwise two-point correlation and instantaneous fields are employed to investigate the near-wall streak spacing and the coherence between the velocity and the scalar fields. Probability density functions (PDF) and joint probability density functions (JPDF) are shown to identify the intermittency both near the wall and in the outer region of the boundary layer. The present simulation data will be available online for the research community.  相似文献

Turbulent mixing of an inclined, skewed jet injected into a crossflow is investigated using MRI-based experiments and a high-fidelity LES of the same configuration. The MRI technique provides three-dimensional fields of mean velocity and mean jet concentration. The 30° skew of the jet relative to the crossflow produces a single dominant vortex which introduces spanwise asymmetries to the velocity and concentration fields. The turbulent scalar transport of the skewed jet is investigated in further detail using the LES, which is validated against the experimental measurements. Mixing is found to be highly anisotropic throughout the jet region. Isotropic turbulent diffusivity and viscosity are used to calculate an optimal value of the turbulent Schmidt number, which varies widely over the jet region and lies mostly outside of the typically accepted range 0.7 ≤ S c t ≤ 0.9. Finally, three common scalar flux models of increasing complexity are evaluated based on their ability to capture the anisotropy and predict the scalar concentration field of the present configuration. The higher order models are shown to better represent the turbulent scalar flux vector, leading to more accurate calculations of the concentration field. While more complex models are better able to capture the turbulent mixing, optimization of model constants is shown to significantly affect the results.  相似文献

Experimental characterization of non-premixed turbulent jet propane flames   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This paper reports an experimental study conducted on turbulent jet propane flames aiming at further understanding of turbulent structure in non-premixed slow-chemistry combustion systems. Measurements of mean and fluctuating velocity and temperature fields, mean concentration of major chemical species, correlation between velocity and temperature fluctuations, and dissipation of temperature fluctuations are reported in a turbulent round jet non-premixed propane flame, Re=20 400 and 37 600, issuing vertically in still air. The experimental conditions were designed to provide a complete definition of the upstream boundary conditions in the measurement domain for the purpose of validating computational models. The measured data depicts useful flow field information for describing turbulent non-premixed slow-chemistry flames. Velocity–temperature correlation measurements show turbulent heat fluxes tended to be restricted to the mixing layer where large temperature gradients occurred. Observations of non-gradient diffusion of heat at x/D=10 were verified. Temperature fluctuation dissipation, χ, showed the highest values in the shear layer, where the variance of temperature fluctuations was maximum and combustion occurred. The isotropy between the temperature dissipation in the radial and tangential directions was confirmed. By contrast, the observed anisotropy between axial and radial directions of dissipation suggests the influence of large structures in the entrainment shear layer on the production of temperature fluctuations in the flame region. The value of the normalized scalar dissipation at the stoichiometric mixture fraction surface, χst, was calculated, and ranges between 2 and 4 s−1. The measured data were used to estimate the budgets in the balance equations for turbulent kinetic energy, Reynolds shear stresses, turbulent heat flux and temperature variance, quantifying the mechanisms involved in the generation of turbulence as well as in the transport of the temperature.  相似文献

Numerical simulation of high Schmidt number turbulent mass transfer at a solid wall is carried out. Particular attention is paid to the response of the concentration field to the wall-normal velocity fluctuation inside the viscous sublayer. Spatio-temporal correlation shows that the high Schmidt number concentration field becomes insensitive to the wall-normal velocity fluctuation. In addition, there exists a significant time lag in the response of the concentration field to the wall-normal velocity fluctuation. As a result, the instantaneous distribution of the local mass transfer rate is drastically changed. These facts explain why the analogy between the momentum and mass transfer does not hold close to the wall. Based on a one-dimensional advection–diffusion equation, we derive a transfer function connecting the wall-normal velocity and the concentration fluctuations. It is shown that the present model can reproduce the fundamental dynamical features of high Schmidt number concentration field.  相似文献

The paper is focused on the study of fully turbulent channel flows, using Large Eddy Simulations (LES), in order to address the effects of adverse pressure gradient regions. Analyses of the effects of streak instabilities, which have been shown to be relevant in such regions, are extended to moderate Reynolds numbers. The work considers two different channel geometries in order to further separate influences from wall curvature, flow separation and adverse pressure gradients. Turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds stress budgets are investigated at separation and re-attachment points. The numerical approach used in the present work is based on the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations, which are solved by a pseudo-spectral methodology for structured grids. Wall-resolved LES calculations are performed using the WALE subgrid scale model. The study shows that the streak instability mechanism persists at higher Reynolds numbers with and without wall curvature in the adverse pressure gradient regions. Moreover, the observed effects are also present regardless of the existence of flow separation regions. Finally, the study of turbulent kinetic energy budgets indicates that, independently of the flow condition, there are well-defined patterns for such turbulent properties at separation and re-attachment points.  相似文献

This report provides an assessment of current turbulent flow calculation methods for hypersonic propulsion flowpaths, particularly the scramjet engine. Emphasis is placed on Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) methods, but some discussion of newer methods such as large eddy simulation (LES) is also provided. The report is organized by considering technical issues throughout the scramjet-powered vehicle flowpath, including laminar-to-turbulent boundary layer transition, shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interactions, scalar transport modeling (specifically the significance of turbulent Prandtl and Schmidt numbers), and compressible mixing. Unit problems are primarily used to conduct the assessment. In the combustor, results from calculations of a direct connect supersonic combustion experiment are also used to address the effects of turbulence model selection and in particular settings for the turbulent Prandtl and Schmidt numbers. It is concluded that RANS turbulence modeling shortfalls are still a major limitation to the accuracy of hypersonic propulsion simulations, whether considering individual components or an overall system. Newer methods such as LES-based techniques may be promising, but are not yet at a maturity to be used routinely by the hypersonic propulsion community. The need for fundamental experiments to provide data for turbulence model development and validation is discussed.  相似文献

Dissipation rates of the turbulent kinetic energy and of the scalar variance are underestimated when the measurement resolution of the small scales of a turbulent flow field are insufficient. Results are presented of experiments conducted in a salt-stratified water tunnel (Schmidt number ∼700). Dissipation rates are determined to be underestimated, and thus correction techniques based on velocity structure functions and mixed-moment functions are proposed. Dissipation rates in laboratory experiments of shear-free, grid-generated turbulence are determined from balance calculations of the kinetic energy and scalar variance evolution equations. Comparisons between the structure function and balance estimates of dissipation show that the corrections are O(1) for the kinetic energy dissipation rate, and are O(100) for the scalar variance dissipation rate. This difference is due to the lack of resolution down to the Batchelor scales that is required for a high Schmidt number flow. Simple correction functions based on microscale Reynolds numbers are developed for both turbulent kinetic energy and scalar variance dissipation rates. Application of the technique to the results of laboratory experiments of density stratified turbulence, sheared turbulence, and sheared density stratified turbulence yields successful corrections. It is also demonstrated that the Karman–Howarth equality (and the analogous Yaglom equation) that relates second and third-order structure functions to dissipation rates is valid for both unstrained (decaying grid-generated turbulence) and density stratified and sheared turbulence at least up to the magnitudes of strains of the current experiments Nt∼10, St∼10, respectively. This is helpful for it allows the use of these equations in the analysis of turbulence even when the large scale background profiles of velocity and scalar are unknown.  相似文献

The development of streamwise orientated disturbances through the boundary layer thickness prior to transition onset for zero-pressure gradient boundary layer flow under the influence %Tu = 4.2 is presented. The analysis concentrates on the development of the maximum positive and negative of the fluctuation velocity in order to gain further insight into the transition process. The average location of the peak negative fluctuation velocity over a range of Reynolds numbers was measured in the upper portion of the boundary layer at y/δ ≈ 0.6, whereas the location of the peak positive value was measured at y/δ ≈ 0.3. The disturbance magnitude of the negative fluctuation velocity increased beyond that of the positive as transition onset approached. The distribution and disturbance magnitude of the maximum positive and negative fluctuation velocities indicate that the initiation of transition may occur on the low-speed components of the flow that are lifted up to the upper region of the boundary layer. This is in qualitative agreement with recent direct numerical simulations on the breakdown of the flow on the lifted low-speed streaks near the boundary layer edge. The results presented in this investigation also demonstrate the increased physical insight gained by examining the distributions of the maximum positive and negative of the streamwise fluctuation velocity component associated with the low- and high-speed streaks, compared to time-averaged values, in determining what structures cause the breakdown to turbulence.  相似文献

Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of a passive scalar in a turbulent channel flow with a normal velocity disturbance on the lower wall are presented for high and low Reynolds numbers. The aim is to reproduce the complex physics of turbulent rough flows without dealing with the geometric complexity. In addition, isothermal walls that cannot be easily assigned in an experiment, are considered. The paper explains the increase of heat transfer through the changes of the velocity and thermal structures. As in real rough flows, the transpiration produces an isotropization of the turbulence near the wall.  相似文献

The effects of a heat conducting partition on the laminar natural convection heat transfer and fluid flow were obtained by comparing the numerical and experimental results for a cubic enclosure without and with a partition. The two opposite vertical walls of the enclosure were isothermal at different temperatures. The working fluid was glycerol. The complete vertical partition, made of Plexiglass, was positioned in the middle of the enclosure. The visualizations of the velocity and temperature fields were obtained by using respectively, Plexiglass and liquid crystal particles as tracers. A middle plane perpendicular to the partition was numerically modeled. The steady two-dimensional model accounted for the variable thermophysical properties of the fluid. The finite volume method based on the finite difference approach was applied. The convective terms were approximated using a deferred correction central difference scheme. The velocity and temperature fields and the distribution of the local and average Nusselt numbers were found as a function of the Rayleigh (38 000 <Ra <369 000) and Prandtl (2700 < Pr < 7000) numbers.  相似文献
