Passive control of the flow behind a bluff-body is obtained by integrating porous area on the body. The penalisation method is used to modelize the flow in three different media. In fact each medium can be considered as a porous medium. The fluid is identified as a porous medium of infinite permeability and the solid is identified as a porous medium of zero permeability. This way, it is easy to compute the flow in each medium using the same parameter. Some benefical effects are due to the porous interface: the flow is smoothed, and the enstrophy and drag are significantly reduced.  相似文献

The mathematical model of flow of a binary salt-water mixture through a porous medium in a wide range of pressure and temperature is developed taking different multiphase thermodynamic equilibria of the mixture into account. Formation of concentrated brine lenses above a degassing magma chamber is investigated within the framework of the model. The lenses are assumed to be coupled with generation of ore deposits. It is shown that the lens formation is caused by phase transitions of two different types undergoing at different depths in the magmatic fluid rising towards the surface. In the shallow zones salt precipitation on the skeleton of the porous medium in the form of a solid phase leads to clogging of pore space and reduction of the permeability. As a result, the magmatic fluid flow towards the surface is blocked and this facilitates the concentrated brine accumulation in a local zone.  相似文献

For a non-isothermal reactive flow process, effective properties such as permeability and heat conductivity change as the underlying pore structure evolves. We investigate changes of the effective properties for a two-dimensional periodic porous medium as the grain geometry changes. We consider specific grain shapes and study the evolution by solving the cell problems numerically for an upscaled model derived in Bringedal et al. (Transp Porous Media 114(2):371–393, 2016. doi: 10.1007/s11242-015-0530-9). In particular, we focus on the limit behavior near clogging. The effective heat conductivities are compared to common porosity-weighted volume averaging approximations, and we find that geometric averages perform better than arithmetic and harmonic for isotropic media, while the optimal choice for anisotropic media depends on the degree and direction of the anisotropy. An approximate analytical expression is found to perform well for the isotropic effective heat conductivity. The permeability is compared to some commonly used approaches focusing on the limiting behavior near clogging, where a fitted power law is found to behave reasonably well. The resulting macroscale equations are tested on a case where the geochemical reactions cause pore clogging and a corresponding change in the flow and transport behavior at Darcy scale. As pores clog the flow paths shift away, while heat conduction increases in regions with lower porosity.  相似文献

A statistical evaluation of 13,000 numerical simulations of random porous structures is used to establish a correlation between permeability, porosity, tortuosity and conductance. The random structures are generated with variable porosities, and parameters such as the permeability and the tortuosity are determined directly from the structures. It is shown that the prevalent definition of tortuosity, as the ratio of length of the real flow path to the projected path in the overall flow direction, does not correlate with permeability in the general case. Also, the correlation between the conductance of the medium, as an indicator of the accessible cross section of a flow path and permeability is no more reliable than the permeability–porosity correlation. However, if the definition of tortuosity is corrected using the cross-sectional variations, the resulting parameter (i.e., the minimum-corrected tortuosity) has a reliable correlation with permeability and can be used to estimate permeability with an acceptable error for most of the simulations of the random porous structures. The feasibility of extending the conclusions from 2-dimensional to 3-dimensional configurations and the numerical percolation thresholds for random structures are also discussed.  相似文献

The classic constitutive equation relating fluid flux to a gradient in potential (pressure head plus gravitational energy) through a porous medium was discovered by Darcy in the mid 1800s. This law states that the flux is proportional to the pressure gradient. However, the passage of the fluid through the porous matrix may cause a local variation of the permeability. For example, the flow may perturb the porous formation by causing particle migration resulting in pore clogging or chemically reacting with the medium to enlarge the pores or diminish the size of the pores. In order to adequately represent these phenomena, we modify the constitutive equations by introducing a memory formalism operating on both the pressure gradient–flux and the pressure–density variations. The memory formalism is then represented with fractional order derivatives. We perform a number of laboratory experiments in uniformly packed columns where a constant pressure is applied on the lower boundary. Both homogeneous and heterogeneous media of different characteristic particle size dimension were employed. The low value assumed by the memory parameters, and in particular by the fractional order, demonstrates that memory is largely influencing the experiments. The data and theory show how mechanical compaction can decrease permeability, and consequently flux.  相似文献

The main focus of this work is to model macroscopically the effects of partial saturation upon the permeability of dual scale fibrous media made of fiber bundles when a Newtonian viscous fluid impregnates it. A new phenomenological model is proposed to explain the discrepancies between experimental pressure results and analytical predictions based on Darcy's law. This model incorporates the essential features of relative permeability but without the necessity of measuring saturation of the liquid for its prediction. The model is very relevant for the small scale industrial systems where a liquid is forced to flow through a fibrous porous medium. It requires four parameters. Two of them are the two permeability values based on the two length scales. One length scale is of the order of magnitude of the individual fiber radius and corresponds to the permeability of the completely staurated medium, the other is of the order of magnitude of the distance between the fiber bundles and corresponds to the permeability of the partially saturated medium. The other two parameters are the lengths of the two partially saturated regions of the flow domain. The two lengths of the partially saturated region and the permeability of the fully saturated flow domain can be directly measured from the experiments. The excellent agreement between the model and the experimental results of inlet pressure profile with respect to time suggests that this model may be used to describe the variation of the permeability behind a moving front in such porous media for correct pressure prediction. It may also be used to characterize the fibrous medium by determining the two different permeabilities and the relative importance of the unsaturated portion of the flow domain for a given architecture.  相似文献

The effect of yield stress on the flow characteristics of a Casson fluid in a homogeneous porous medium bounded by a circular tube is investigated by employing the Brinkman model to account for the Darcy resistance offered by the porous medium. The non-linear coupled implicit system of differential equations governing the flow is first transformed into suitable integral equations and are solved numerically. Analytical solution is obtained for a Newtonian fluid in the case of constant permeability, and the numerical solution is verified with that of the analytic solution. The effect of yield stress of the fluid and permeability of the porous medium on shear stress and velocity distributions, plug flow radius and flow rate are examined. The minimum pressure gradient required to start the flow is found to be independent of the permeability of the porous medium and is equal to the yield stress of the fluid.  相似文献

Reactive transport processes in a porous medium will often both cause changes to the pore structure, via precipitation and dissolution of biomass or minerals, and be affected by these changes, via changes to the material’s porosity and permeability. An understanding of the pore structure morphology and the changes to flow parameters during these processes is critical when modeling reactive transport. Commonly applied porosity–permeability relations in simulation models on the REV scale use a power-law relation, often with slight modifications, to describe such features; they are often used for modeling the effects of mineral precipitation and/or dissolution on permeability. To predict the reduction in permeability due to biomass growth, many different and often rather complex relations have been developed and published by a variety of authors. Some authors use exponential or simplified Kozeny–Carman relations. However, many of these relations do not lead to fundamentally different predictions of permeability alteration when compared to a simple power-law relation with a suitable exponent. Exceptions to this general trend are only few of the porosity–permeability relations developed for biomass clogging; these consider a residual permeability even when the pore space is completely filled with biomass. Other exceptions are relations that consider a critical porosity at which the porous medium becomes impermeable; this is often used when modeling the effect of mineral precipitation. This review first defines the scale on which porosity–permeability relations are typically used and aims at explaining why these relations are not unique. It shows the variety of existing approaches and concludes with their essential features.  相似文献

A thin film of a power–law fluid flowing down a porous inclined plane is considered. It is assumed that the flow through the porous medium is governed by the modified Darcy’s law together with Beavers–Joseph boundary condition for a general power–law fluid. Under the assumption of small permeability relative to the thickness of the overlying fluid layer, the flow is decoupled from the filtration flow through the porous medium and a slip condition at the bottom is used to incorporate the effects of the permeability of the porous substrate. Applying the long-wave theory, a nonlinear evolution equation for the thickness of the film is obtained. A linear stability analysis of the base flow is performed and the critical condition for the onset of instability is obtained. The results show that the substrate porosity in general destabilizes the film flow system and the shear-thinning rheology enhances this destabilizing effect. A weakly nonlinear stability analysis reveals the existence of supercritical stable and subcritical unstable regions in the wave number versus Reynolds number parameter space. The numerical solution of the nonlinear evolution equation in a periodic domain shows that the fully developed nonlinear solutions are either time-dependent modes that oscillate slightly in the amplitude or time independent stable two-dimensional nonlinear waves with large amplitude referred to as ‘permanent waves’. The results show that the shape and the amplitude of the nonlinear waves are strongly influenced by the permeability of the porous medium and the shear-thinning rheology.  相似文献

This study investigated the physical clogging of uniformly graded porous media under constant flow rates using natural porous media and suspensions. The porous media selected for this experimental study was a fine-to-medium sandy soil fractioned into thirteen uniformly graded beds: seven unisize beds and six uniform beds. The physical clogging of the beds was studied using two types of silt suspensions as along with two suspension concentrations and three water discharges. It was found that the permeability reduction due to physical clogging \([(K_\mathrm{i} - K_\mathrm{t})/K_\mathrm{i}]\) increased with decreasing \({D}_{15}/{d}_{85}\) ratios until a critical value of \({D}_{15}/{d}_{85}\), after which a surface mat of suspension was formed on the porous media. It was also found that the value of reduced permeability at any time (at any number of pore volumes of injected suspension-laden water), \(K_\mathrm{t}\), is directly proportional to square of \({D}_{15}\) and inversely proportional to \({C}_{\mathrm{u}}\) of the porous media and \({d}_{85}\) of suspensions. The effects of suspension type and flow rates on physical clogging seemed to depend on the size of the pores in the porous media.  相似文献

PIV measurements have been performed for turbulent flows in a rib-mounted channel whose bottom wall is made of a porous layer. The ratio of the rib and channel heights is fixed at 0.5. The effects of the wall and rib permeability are investigated focusing on the separating and reattaching flows at the bulk Reynolds number of 103???104. Three kinds of foamed ceramics are employed as the porous media. They have the same porosity of 0.8 but each permeability is different from the others. Its normalized values by the rib height are 0.89 × 10???4, 1.47 × 10???4 and 3.87 × 10???4. Two kinds of square cylinder ribs: an impermeable smooth solid rib or a permeable porous rib which is made of the same porous medium as that for the bottom wall are used. The obtained turbulent velocity fields of the solid rib flows indicate that the turbulent intensity behind the rib becomes weak and the recirculation bubble in the clear channel tends to vanish as the the wall permeability increases. In the porous rib flow, the recirculation and the reattachment point shift downstream and turbulence becomes weaker due to the bleeding flow through the rib. In the higher permeability cases, the recirculation bubble hardly exists due to the flows through not only the bottom wall but also the porous rib. From the measurements, it is suggested that in the solid rib flows, a reverse flow region exists inside the porous wall whereas in porous rib flows, such reverse flow does not exist at higher permeability.  相似文献

The porous-fluid interface encompasses a region bridging the flow inside a porous medium and a free-flowing fluid. In the context of volume-averaged simulations, it can be described by a set of gradually changing parameters defining the porous medium, mainly porosity and permeability. In this paper, both the permeability and the porous-induced drag force are evaluated a-priori, by explicitly filtering a set of Particle-Resolved Simulations (PRS) of the flow in the channel partially occupied by the porous medium. Different porous matrices are considered and the influence of the geometry and filtering parameters on the macroscopic quantities is studied. Especially, the focus is placed on the requirements for the kernel type and size to perform filtering accurately, and their impact on the distribution of permeability at the interface. The performance of the typically used models for the permeability is compared to the explicitly filtered results. Lastly, a new model for permeability and the drag force is introduced, taking into account the information about the filtering size and non-uniformity of the velocity field. The model greatly improves the prediction of velocity at the porous-fluid interface and serves as a proof of concept that a successful porous drag model should strive to include information about both parameters.  相似文献

We consider colloidal dynamics and single-phase fluid flow within a saturated porous medium in two space dimensions. A new approach in modeling pore clogging and porosity changes on the macroscopic scale is presented. Starting from the pore scale, transport of colloids is modeled by the Nernst?CPlanck equations. Here, interaction with the porous matrix due to (non-)DLVO forces is included as an additional transport mechanism. Fluid flow is described by incompressible Stokes equations with interaction energy as forcing term. Attachment and detachment processes are modeled by a surface reaction rate. The evolution of the underlying microstructure is captured by a level set function. The crucial point in completing this model is to set up appropriate boundary conditions on the evolving solid?Cliquid interface. Their derivation is based on mass conservation. As a result of an averaging procedure by periodic homogenization in a level set framework, on the macroscale we obtain Darcy??s law and a modified averaged convection?Cdiffusion equation with effective coefficients due to the evolving microstructure. These equations are supplemented by microscopic cell problems. Time- and space-dependent averaged coefficient functions explicitly contain information of the underlying geometry and also information of the interaction potential. The theoretical results are complemented by numerical computations of the averaged coefficients and simulations of a heterogeneous multiscale scenario. Here, we consider a radially symmetric setting, i.e., in particular we assume a locally periodic geometry consisting of circular grains. We focus on the interplay between attachment and detachment reaction, colloidal interaction forces, and the evolving microstructure. Our model contributes to the understanding of the effects and processes leading to porosity changes and pore clogging from a theoretical point of view.  相似文献

A high performance flexible porous medium burner that can burn gaseous and liquid fuel with different type of flames(premixed and non-premixed) is proposed. The merit of the combustion within porous medium is that heat is recirculated from the combustion gas to porous medium at upstream wherein vaporization is taken place(in case of liquid fuel) or preheated(in case of gaseous fuel) before mixing with the combustion air followed by combustion within another porous medium at downstream. In a former version of the high performance flexible porous medium burner, the upstream porous medium is incorporated with a cooling system using the combustion air as a coolants to prevent thermal decomposition of fuels and thus the burner clogging caused by carbon deposit within the porous medium can be avoided. However, the cooling effect cannot be properly controlled such that the boiling point of the liquid fuel is maintained at suitable value irrespective of the volume flow rate of the combustion air, which is linearly varied with the firing rate of the burner. In particular at the lean burn condition, where high air flow rate is required with high cooling effect with porous medium. This can result in the porous medium temperature lower than the corresponding boiling point of the liquid fuel and thus evaporation of the fuel is failed and the combustion is ceased. Therefore, method of controlling the cooling air flow rate in the porous medium is proposed and studied in order to appropriately control the porous medium temperature and maintain it at above the boiling point irrespective of the combustion conditions. In this research, experimental and computation analysis are used to design the flexible porous burner(FPMB),with adjustable cooling effect. The result shows that, the new design of FPMB which has temperature in the upstream porous medium is higher than boiling point and lower than thermal decomposition temperature of fuel(kerosene) at all conditions and can be operated at a wide range of equivalence ratio without fuel decomposition and fuel non-vaporization problem.  相似文献

We develop a theoretical model for inclined free-surface flow over a porous surface exhibiting periodic undulations. The effect of bottom permeability is incorporated by imposing a slip condition that accounts for the nonplanar geometry of the fluid–porous medium interface. Under the assumption of shallow flow, equations of motion accounting for inertial effects are obtained by retaining in the Navier-Stokes equations terms that are up to second-order with respect to a small shallowness parameter. The explicit dependence on the cross-stream coordinate is eliminated from these equations by means of a weighted residual procedure. A linear stability analysis of the steady flow is performed in connection with Floquet–Bloch theory. The results predict that bottom permeability has a destabilizing influence on the flow. A physical explanation has been proposed which involves examining how permeability affects the steady-state flow. Conclusions are drawn regarding the combined effect of the surface tension of the fluid and the parameters describing the bottom surface including permeability, inclination and the amplitude and wavelength of the undulations that generate the bottom topography. A numerical scheme for solving the fully nonlinear governing equations is also outlined. The instability of particular steady flows is determined by conducting nonlinear simulations of the temporal evolution of the flow and comparisons are made with the predictions from the linear analysis. Comparisons with existing experimental data are also included.  相似文献

This paper deals with the theoretical aspects of chemical-dissolution front instability problems in two-dimensional fluid-saturated porous media including medium anisotropic effects. Since a general anisotropic medium can be described as an orthotropic medium in the corresponding principal directions, a two-dimensional orthotropic porous medium is considered to derive the analytical solution for the critical condition, which is used to judge whether or not the chemical dissolution front can become unstable during its propagation. In the case of the mineral dissolution ratio (that is defined as the ratio of the dissolved-mineral equilibrium concentration in the pore-fluid to the molar concentration of the dissolvable mineral in the solid matrix of the fluid-saturated porous medium) approaching zero, the corresponding critical condition has been mathematically derived when medium permeability anisotropic effects are considered. As a complementary tool, the computational simulation method is used to simulate the morphological evolution of chemical dissolution fronts in two-dimensional fluid-saturated porous media including medium anisotropic effects. The related theoretical and numerical results demonstrated that: (1) a decrease in the medium anisotropic permeability factor (or ratio), which is defined as the ratio of the principal permeability in the transversal direction to that in the longitudinal direction parallel to the pore-fluid inflow direction, can stabilize the chemical dissolution front so that it becomes more difficult for a planar chemical-dissolution front to evolve into different morphologies in the chemical dissolution system; (2) the medium anisotropic permeability ratio can have significant effects on the morphological evolution of the chemical dissolution front. When the Zhao number of the chemical dissolution system is greater than its critical value, the greater the medium anisotropic permeability ratio, the faster the irregular chemical-dissolution front grows.  相似文献

The effect of an anisotropic permeability on thermal boundary layer flow in porous media is studied. The convective flow is induced by a vertical, uniformly heated surface embedded in a fluid-saturated medium. A leading-order boundary layer theory is presented. It is shown that the thickness of the resulting boundary layer flow is different from that obtained in an isotropic porous medium. In general, an anisotropic permeability induces a fluid drift in the spanwise direction, the strength of which depends on the precise nature of the anisotropy. Conditions are found which determine whether or not the boundary layer flow is three-dimensional.  相似文献
