A direct force measurement technique employing piezoelectric load cells is used to experimentally investigate a two-dimensional airfoil (NACA 0012) undergoing dynamic stall. The load cells are installed at each end of the airfoil and give the force response in two directions in the plane normal to the airfoil axis during oscillations. Experiments are carried out at a Reynolds number based on the airfoil chord equal to 7.7×104, and at four reduced frequencies, k=0.005, 0.01, 0.02, and 0.04. Phase-averaged lift of the airfoil undergoing dynamic stall is presented. It is observed that hysteresis loops of the lift occur both when the airfoil is pitched to exceed its static stall limit and when it is still within its static stall limit, and they grow in size with increasing k at the same pitching mean angle of attack and pitching amplitude. Both the lift and the drag induced by the pitching motion are further analyzed using the methods of higher order correlation analysis and continuous wavelet transforms to undercover their nonlinear and nonstationary features, in addition to classical FFT-based spectral analysis. The results are quantitatively illustrated by an energy partition analysis. It is found that the unsteady lift and drag show opposite trends when the airfoil undergoes transition from the pre-stall regime to the full-stall regime. The degree of nonlinearity of the lift increases, and the lift show a nonstationary feature in the light-stall regime, while the nonlinearity of the drag decreases, and the drag shows nonstationary feature in both the light-stall and the full-stall regimes. Furthermore, the lift and the drag have significant nonlinear interactions as shown by the correlation analysis in the light-stall regime.

The interaction of the wake, generated behind an upstream oscillating NACA 0012 airfoil, with the downstream NACA 0012 airfoil, oscillated at the same conditions but with ϕ = 0° and 180° different phases (relative to the upstream airfoil), was investigated by particle image velocimetry and surface pressure measurements. The results show that the axial spacing and phase difference determined the strength of the undesirable interference effects and, subsequently, the behavior of the dynamic-load loops of the downstream airfoil. The boundary-layer events on the downstream airfoil were persistently different from those observed on the baseline oscillating airfoil. The downwash induced by the upstream airfoil disrupted leading-edge vortex (LEV) formation on the downstream airfoil. The absence of LEV-induced transient effects also led to a significantly lowered aerodynamic loading and C l -hysteresis compared to the baseline airfoil. The aerodynamic performance of the ϕ = 180° case, however, outperformed that of the ϕ = 0° case.

In this research, the effect of flow regime change from subsonic to transonic on the air loads of a pitching NACA0012 airfoil is investigated. To do this, the effect of change in flow regime on the lift and pitching moment coefficients hysteresis cycles is studied. The harmonic balance approach is utilized for numerical calculation due to its low computational time. Verifications are also made with previous works and good agreements are observed. The assessment of flow regime change on the aforementioned hysteresis cycles is accomplished in the Mach number range of M=0.65–0.755. The reduced frequency and pitch amplitude also vary from k=0.03 to 0.1 and α0=1–2.51°, respectively. Results show that the effect of increase in Mach number is to increase and decrease the lift coefficient during downstroke and upstroke, respectively, whereas at low reduced frequencies, the effect of increase in Mach number may lead to a reverse manner when airfoil moves toward its extremum angle of attack. Results also reveal that as the pitch amplitude varies, the shape of lift coefficient hysteresis cycle depends more on the pitch amplitude than on the appearance of shock. It is shown that as the Mach number increases, the incidence angles correspond to the extremum pitching moment, and depending on the reduced frequency, lie between zero and extremum angle of attack. These incidence angles shift toward the extremum angle of attack as the reduced frequency decreases. Results also show that the increase in pitch amplitude at low Mach number, in such a way that leads to the formation of shock around the extremum angle of attack, causes the extremum pitching moment to appear around these angles and at high Mach number, depending on the reduced frequency, the extremum pitching moment incidence angles would be between zero and extremum incidence angle.

Effects of Gurney Flaps on a NACA0012 Airfoil
Experimental measurements of surface pressure distributions and wake profiles were obtained for a NACA0012 airfoil to determine the lift, drag, and pitching-moment coefficients for various configurations. The addition of a Gurney flap increased the maximum lift coefficient from 1.37 to 1.74, however there was a drag increment at low-to-moderate lift coefficient. In addition, the boundary layer profile measurements were taken using a rake of total pressure probes at the 90% chord location on the suction side. The effective Gurney flap height is about 2% of chord length, which provides the highest lift-to-drag ratio among the investigated configurations when compared with the clean NACA0012 airfoil. In this case, the device remains within the boundary layer. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

In this paper the combined effect of two mechanisms for lift enhancement at low Reynolds numbers are considered, wing oscillations and wing flexibility. The force, deformation and flow fields of rigid and flexible low aspect ratio (AR=3) and high aspect ratio (AR=6) wings oscillating at a fixed post-stall angle of attack of 15° and amplitude of 15% of chord are measured. The force measurements show that flexibility can increase the time-averaged lift coefficient significantly. For low aspect ratio wings the maximum lift coefficient across all Strouhal numbers was Cl=1.38 for the rigid wing as opposed to Cl=2.77 for the flexible wing. Very similar trends were observed for the high aspect ratio wings. This increase is associated with significant deformation of the wing. The root is sinusoidally plunged with small amplitude but this motion is amplified along the span resulting in a larger tip motion but with a phase lag. The amount it is amplified strongly depends on Strouhal number. A Strouhal number of Src=1.5 was selected for detailed flow field measurements due to it being central to the high-lift region of the flexible wings, producing approximately double the lift of the rigid wing. For this Strouhal number the rigid wings exhibit a Leading Edge Vortex (LEV) ring. This is where the clockwise upper-surface LEV pairs with the counter-clockwise lower-surface LEV to form a vortex ring that self-advects upstream and away from the wing's upper surface. Conversely the deformation of the flexible wings inhibits the formation of the LEV ring. Instead a strong upper-surface LEV forms during the downward motion and convects close to the airfoil upper surface thus explaining the significantly higher lift. These measurements demonstrate the significant gains that can be achieved through the combination of unsteady aerodynamics with flexible structures.

The effects of asymmetric sinusoidal motion on pitching airfoil aerodynamics were studied by numerical simulations for 2-D flow around a NACA0012 airfoil at Re=1.35×105. Various unsteady parameters (amplitude of oscillation, d; reduced frequency, k) were applied to investigate the effect of asymmetry parameter S on the instantaneous force coefficients and flow patterns. The results reveal that S has a noticeable effect on the aerodynamic performance, as it affects the instantaneous force coefficient, maximum lift and drag coefficient, hysteresis loops and the flow structures.

A stochastic estimation technique has been applied to simultaneously acquired data of velocity and surface pressure as a tool to identify the sources of wall-pressure fluctuations. The measurements have been done on a NACA0012 airfoil at a Reynolds number of Re c  = 2 × 105, based on the chord of the airfoil, where a separated laminar boundary layer was present. By performing simultaneous measurements of the surface pressure fluctuations and of the velocity field in the boundary layer and wake of the airfoil, the wall-pressure sources near the trailing edge (TE) have been studied. The mechanisms and flow structures associated with the generation of the surface pressure have been investigated. The “quasi-instantaneous” velocity field resulting from the application of the technique has led to a picture of the evolution in time of the convecting surface pressure generating flow structures and revealed information about the sources of the wall-pressure fluctuations, their nature and variability. These sources are closely related to those of the radiated noise from the TE of an airfoil and to the vibration issues encountered in ship hulls for example. The NACA0012 airfoil had a 30 cm chord and aspect ratio of 1.

In the present work an experimental comparison is made between two adaptation strategies: the Judd's method and the Everhart's method. A NACA 0012 airfoil has been tested at Mach numbers up to 0.4: models with chords up to 200 mm have been tested in a 200 mm × 200 mm test section. The two strategies, though based on different theoretical approaches, show a fairly good agreement as far as c p distribution on the model, lift and drag curves and residual interference are concerned and agree, in terms of lift curve slope and drag coefficient at zero lift, with the McCroskey correlation.A version of this paper was presented at the 2nd International Conference on Experimental Fluid Mechanics, Torino, Italy, July 4–8, 1994.This work has been supported by the Italian Ministry for University and Scientific and Technological Research (MURST 60%).

The unsteady low Reynolds number aerodynamics phenomena around flapping wings are addressed in several investigations. Elsewhere, airfoils at higher Mach numbers and Reynolds numbers have been treated quite comprehensively in the literature. It is duly noted that the influence of heat transfer phenomena on the aerodynamic performance of flapping wings configurations is not well studied. The objective of the present study is to investigate the effect of heat transfer upon the aerodynamic performance of a pitching and plunging NACA0012 airfoil in the low Reynolds number flow regime with particular emphasis upon the airfoil's lift and drag coefficients. The compressible Navier–Stokes equations are solved using a finite volume method. To consider the variation of fluid properties with temperature, the values of dynamic viscosity and thermal diffusivity are evaluated with Sutherland's formula and the Eucken model, respectively. Instantaneous and mean lift and drag coefficients are calculated for several temperature differences between the airfoil surface and freestream within the range 0–100 K. Simulations are performed for a prescribed airfoil motion schedule and flow parameters. It is learnt that the aerodynamic performance in terms of the lift CL and drag CD behavior is strongly dependent upon the heat transfer rate from the airfoil to the flow field. In the plunging case, the mean value of CD tends to increase, whereas the amplitude of CL tends to decrease with increasing temperature difference. In the pitching case, on the other hand, the mean value and the amplitude of both CD and CL decrease. A spectral analysis of CD and CL in the pitching case shows that the amplitudes of both CD and CL decrease with increasing surface temperature, whereas the harmonic frequencies are not affected.

The paper presents a hybrid Cartesian grid and gridless approach to solve unsteady moving boundary flow problems. Unlike the Chimera clouds of points approach, the hybrid approach uses a Cartesian grid to cover most of the computational domain and a gridless method to calculate a relatively small region adjacent to the body surface, making use of the flexibility of the gridless method in handling surface grid with complicated geometry and the computational efficiency of the Cartesian grid. Four cases were conducted to examine the applicability, accuracy and robustness of the hybrid approach. Steady flows over a single NACA0012 airfoil and dual NACA0012 airfoils at different Mach numbers and angles of attack were simulated. Moreover, by implementing a dynamic hole cutting, node identification and information communication between the Cartesian grid and the gridless regions, unsteady flows over a pitching NACA0012 airfoil (small displacement) and two‐dimensional airfoil/store separation (large displacement) were performed. The computational results were found to agree well with earlier experimental data as well as computational results. Shock waves were accurately captured. The computational results show that the hybrid approach is of potential to solve the moving boundary flow problems. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

An experimental investigation was conducted to characterize the evolution of the unsteady vortex structures in the wake of a pitching airfoil with the pitch-pivot-point moving from 0.16C to 0.52C (C is the chord length of the airfoil). The experimental study was conducted in a low-speed wind tunnel with a symmetric NACA0012 airfoil model in pitching motion under different pitching kinematics (i.e., reduced frequency k=3.8–13.2). A high-resolution particle image velocimetry (PIV) system was used to conduct detailed flow field measurements to quantify the characteristics of the wake flow and the resultant propulsion performance of the pitching airfoil. Besides conducting “free-run” PIV measurements to determine the ensemble-averaged velocity distributions in the wake flow, “phase-locked” PIV measurements were also performed to elucidate further details about the behavior of the unsteady vortex structures. Both the vorticity–moment theorem and the integral momentum theorem were used to evaluate the effects of the pitch-pivot-point location on the propulsion performance of the pitching airfoil. It was found that the pitch-pivot-point would affect the evolution of the unsteady wake vortices and resultant propulsion performance of the pitching airfoil greatly. Moving the pitch-pivot-point of the pitching airfoil can be considered as adding a plunging motion to the original pitching motion. With the pitch-pivot-point moving forward (or backward), the added plunging motion would make the airfoil trailing edge moving in the same (or opposite) direction as of the original pitching motion, which resulted in the generated wake vortices and resultant thrust enhanced (or weakened) by the added plunging motion.

This work aims at investigating the mechanisms of separation and the transition to turbulence in the separated shear-layer of aerodynamic profiles, while at the same time to gain insight into coherent structures formed in the separated zone at low-to-moderate Reynolds numbers. To do this, direct numerical simulations of the flow past a NACA0012 airfoil at Reynolds numbers Re = 50,000 (based on the free-stream velocity and the airfoil chord) and angles of attack AOA = 9.25° and AOA = 12° have been carried out. At low-to-moderate Reynolds numbers, NACA0012 exhibits a combination of leading-edge/trailing-edge stall which causes the massive separation of the flow on the suction side of the airfoil. The initially laminar shear layer undergoes transition to turbulence and vortices formed are shed forming a von Kármán like vortex street in the airfoil wake. The main characteristics of this flow together with its main features, including power spectra of a set of selected monitoring probes at different positions on the suction side and in the wake of the airfoil are provided and discussed in detail.

Rectangular planform wings were tested at Reynolds numbers as low as 20 000 in a low turbulence wind tunnel. The lift and drag measurements on a NACA 0012 profile were compared with those for thin flat and cambered plates. For all Reynolds numbers below 70 000 the best profile was a thin plate with a 5% circular arc camber. At all turbulence levels this profile produced the greatest lift-drag ratio, and had the highest lift coefficient at all angles of attack. The 5% camber and all of the thin plates tested were relatively insensitive to either a variation in the Reynolds number, or an increase in the wind tunnel turbulence level, whereas the NACA 0012 was very seriously affected by either, at Reynolds numbers below 50 000. An experimental investigation was conducted on the performance and boundary layer characteristics of the Wortmann FX 63-137 airfoil with and without trip wire roughness. Data were obtained through use of a three-component strain gage force balance and static pressure measurement equipment at a test Reynolds number of R c = 100,000. Emphasis was placed on determining the effect of trip wire placement and size on such performance parameters as (C l /C d )max and (C l 3/2 /C d )max. Prediction of transition location by the criterion due to Tani and Gibbings was found to have limited application. Most trip wire locations resulted in degraded performance, but for some locations, minimum drag was reduced, maximum lift to drag ratio increased, and hysteresis averted.

Aerodynamic noise due to interaction between incoming turbulence and rotating blades is an important component in the wind turbine noise. The rod-airfoil configuration is used to investigate the interactive phenomenon experimentally and numerically. Distribution of unsteady pressure on the airfoil surface is measured for different rod positions and airfoil attack angles. Two National Advisory Committee for Aeronatics (NACA) airfoils, NACA0012 and NACA0018, and two wind turbine airfoils, S809 and S825 are investigated. In addition, for low angles of attack, the flow field around the airfoil's leading edge is investigated with the particle image velocimetry (PIV). The experimental results indicate that unsteady pressure disturbances on the airfoil surface are related to the rod vortex shedding. Meanwhile, the interaction flow field of the rod and NACA0012 airfoil is simulated with the unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes method (URANS), and the obtained pressure spectra are compared with the experimental results.

This research numerically elucidates the effects of suction and blowing on the enhancement of unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of flows and their corresponding impact on stall delay over the well-known NACA0012 airfoil at various angles of attack (\( 12 \le {\text{AOA}} \le 20 \)) under low Reynolds numbers. For this purpose, an in-house solver written in C++ is developed. The numerical code utilizes the Jameson’s cell-centered finite volume numerical method accompanied by a progressive power-law preconditioning approach to suppress the stiffness of the governing equations. Many numerical simulations are performed over the suction-blowing control parameters, namely, the slot location (\( L_{j} \)), suction/blowing amplitudes (\( A_{j} \)), and suction/blowing angle (\( \theta_{j} \)). Most of the analyses are based on the measurements of the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics behaviors (such as lift, drag, moment coefficients, and stall phenomena) over the airfoil. The numerical results confirm that the unsteady behavior of the flow (vortex shedding) is weakened or approximately removed when suction is used, especially near the leading edge. In all of the test cases, the ratio of the average lift coefficient to the average drag coefficient increases with increasing suction and blowing amplitudes, except in the case of perpendicular blowing. Furthermore, the blowing is more sensitive to the blowing angle compared to the suction. From the suction and blowing results, it is concluded that the former has a more positive impact on the lift and drag characteristics, especially in the case of incompressible flow at Low-Reynolds regimes.

Fluid forces on a very low Reynolds number airfoil and their prediction
This paper presents the measurements of mean and fluctuating forces on an NACA0012 airfoil over a large range of angle (α) of attack (0-90°) and low to small chord Reynolds numbers (Rec), 5.3 × 103-5.1 × 104, which is of both fundamental and practical importance. The forces, measured using a load cell, display good agreement with the estimate from the LDA-measured cross-flow distributions of velocities in the wake based on the momentum conservation. The dependence of the forces on both α and Rec is determined and discussed in detail. It has been found that the stall of an airfoil, characterized by a drop in the lift force and a jump in the drag force, occurs at Rec ? 1.05 × 104 but is absent at Rec = 5.3 × 103. A theoretical analysis is developed to predict and explain the observed dependence of the mean lift and drag on α.
