As air is injected into a flowing liquid, the resultant bubble characteristics depend on the properties of the injector, near-wall flow, and flowing liquid. Previous research has shown that near-wall bubbles can significantly reduce skin-friction drag. Air was injected into the turbulent boundary layer on a test section wall of a water tunnel containing various concentrations of salt and surfactant (Triton-X-100, Union Carbide). Photographic records show that the mean bubble diameter decreased monotonically with increasing salt and surfactant concentrations. Here, 33 ppt saltwater bubbles had one quarter, and 20 ppm Triton-X-100 bubbles had one half of the mean diameter of freshwater bubbles.  相似文献

The influence of the type of gas on the performance of microbubble skin friction reduction was investigated on an axisymmetric body. Gases were selected which covered a wide range of densities and solubilities. Integrated skin friction measurements, which span a range of velocities (U ) from roughly 10 to 20 m/s and tunnel pressures from 1 to 2.6 atm, are presented as a function of gas flow rate. All gases show qualitatively similar behavior. The gas volume flowrate, referenced to injector ambient conditions (tunnel temperature and pressure), is shown to correlate the drag reducing behavior of all the gases at one velocity, independent of pressure. A normalization based on the volume flowrate through the turbulent boundary layer is shown to nearly collapse all the results independent of velocity or pressure. The results indicate that high ambient pressures may degrade the drag reducing capabilities of highly soluble gases.  相似文献

The drag reduction characteristics of certain high molecular weight polymers have been studied by various investigators. Because of the polymer’s ability to reduce turbulent shear stress and dependence of the boundary layer wall pressure spectral amplitude on the shear stress, polymer has the potential to suppress noise and vibration caused by the boundary layer unsteady pressures. Compared to its effect on drag reduction, polymer additive effects on turbulent boundary layer (TBL) wall pressure fluctuations have received little attention. Kadykov and Lyamshev [Sov. Phys. Acoust. 16 (1970) 59], Greshilor et al. [Sov. Phys. Acoust. 21 (1975) 247] showed that drag reducing polymer additives do indeed reduce wall pressure fluctuations, but they have not established any scaling relationship which effectively collapse data. Some effort has been made by Timothy et al. [JASA 108 (1) (2000) 71] at Penn State University to develop a scaling relationship for TBL wall pressure fluctuations that are modified by adding drag reducing polymer to pure water flow. This paper presents a theoretical model based on the work of the Timothy et al. team at ARL, Penn State University. Through this model one can estimate, reduction in TBL flow induced noise and vibration for rigid smooth surfaces due to release of drag reducing polymers in boundary layer region. Using this theoretical model, flow noise as experienced by a typical flush mounted hydrophone has been estimated for a smooth wall plate as a function of polymer additive concentration. Effect of non-dimensionalisation of the wall pressure fluctuations frequency spectra with traditional outer, inner and mixed flow variables will also be addressed in the paper. The paper also covers a model based on molecular relaxation time in polymer additives which not only reduce drag but also flow induced noise up to certain polymer concentration.  相似文献

Particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) is applied to a bubbly two-phase turbulent flow in a horizontal channel at Re = 2 × 104 to investigate the turbulent shear stress profile which had been altered by the presence of bubbles. Streamwise and vertical velocity components of liquid phase are obtained using a shallow focus imaging method under backlight photography. The size of bubbles injected through a porous plate in the channel ranged from 0.3 to 1.5 mm diameter, and the bubbles show a significant backward slip velocity relative to liquid flow. After bubbles and tracer particles are identified by binarizing the image, velocity of each phase and void fraction are profiled in a downstream region. The turbulent shear stress, which consists of three components in the bubbly two-phase flow, is computed by analysis of PTV data. The result shows that the fluctuation correlation between local void fraction and vertical liquid velocity provides a negative shear stress component which promotes frictional drag reduction in the bubbly two-phase layer. The paper also deals with the source of the negative shear stress considering bubble’s relative motion to liquid.  相似文献

We investigate frictional-drag reduction with electrolytic microbubbles based on image measurement of a turbulent flow in a water channel at Re = 4800 (based on the half channel height). Microbubbles with a diameter ranging 30–200 μm can reduce frictional drag by as much as 30% relative to single-phase flow even at low void fractions (α ≈ 3 × 10−4); however, drag reduction is only effective within a limited downstream distance from an electrode array. Arrangement of the optical system allows us to measure the bubble-production rate by water electrolysis from images near the wall and to trace the motion of bubbles. We also measure velocity fields using particle-tracking velocimetry based on a shallow depth-of-field approach by segregating tracer particles from microbubbles. Vertically oscillating microbubbles likely represent interaction with vortical structures near the wall, and bubbles approaching the wall appear to induce negative streamwise velocity relative to the surrounding fluid. We relate the wall friction with the double integral of the Reynolds-stress profile and show that its variation due to microbubbles decreases the drag on the wall. Microbubbles tend to coalesce downstream resulting in a fewer bubbles but with greater size; accordingly, the oscillatory motion diminishes, and the frictional drag rather increases.  相似文献

The effect of micro-bubbles on the turbulent boundary layer in the channel flow with Reynolds numbers (Re) ranging from \(0.87\times 10 ^{5}\) to \(1.23\times 10^{5}\) is experimentally studied by using particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements. The micro-bubbles are produced by water electrolysis. The velocity profiles, Reynolds stress and instantaneous structures of the boundary layer, with and without micro-bubbles, are measured and analyzed. The presence of micro-bubbles changes the streamwise mean velocity of the fluid and increases the wall shear stress. The results show that micro-bubbles have two effects, buoyancy and extrusion, which dominate the flow behavior of the mixed fluid in the turbulent boundary layer. The buoyancy effect leads to upward motion that drives the fluid motion in the same direction and, therefore, enhances the turbulence intense of the boundary layer. While for the extrusion effect, the presence of accumulated micro-bubbles pushes the flow structures in the turbulent boundary layer away from the near-wall region. The interaction between these two effects causes the vorticity structures and turbulence activity to be in the region far away from the wall. The buoyancy effect is dominant when the Re is relatively small, while the extrusion effect plays a more important role when Re rises.  相似文献

The influence of the injection system for centerline injected polymer solutions (threads) on drag reduction in a turbulent pipe flow was studied using injectors of different length and grids. Compared with a short injector, the long injector showed a different behavior: the drag reduction was lower and its onset point was shifted to higher Reynolds numbers.The velocity profiles for the polymer-phase and the water-phase were measured simultaneously with a combination of laser-Doppler-velocimetry LDV and laser-induced fluorescence LIE It was found that the analysis of the LDV measurements with respect to the difference in velocity between the polymer-phase and the water-phase can give information about the mixing between both phases. For a Reynolds number of 30000 the difference between the phases is comparatively large for low drag reduction and very small for high drag reduction. The results indicate that the drag reduction achieved by injecting a concentrated polymer solution is mainly caused by a mixing process between polymer and water.  相似文献

Microbubble and air film methods are believed to be applicable to skin friction reduction in ships. Small bubbles are dispersed into the turbulent boundary layer in the former case, and wide air layers cover the wall surface in the latter case. Previous studies did not specifically address the intermediate case between the microbubble and air film conditions. This study is concerned with the possibility and mechanism of drag reduction using relatively large air bubbles compared to the boundary layer thickness in a horizontal turbulent channel flow. The relationship between local skin friction and the bubble’s interfacial structure is investigated by synchronizing the measurement of wall-shear stress with the image acquisition of bubbles. The bubble sizes range from 2 to 90 mm approximately. As a result, a negative correlation between the local skin friction and the local void fraction is confirmed by the time-resolved measurement. A new observation is the fact that the local skin friction decreases drastically in the rear part of individual large bubbles, and rapidly increases after the bubble’s rear interface passes. This characteristic underlies the bubble-size dependency of the average skin friction in the intermediate bubble size condition.  相似文献

An important way of increasing the speed and lowering the fuel consumption of ships is by decreasing the frictional drag. One of the most promising techniques for reducing drag is the use of air bubbles. The goal of this investigation is to establish a set of optimum robust parametric levels for drag reduction by a mixture (air–water) film in turbulent channel flow. Based on the conditions laid out by the Taguchi orthogonal array method, turbulent flows, with air bubbles injected into a channel, are simulated using commercial computational fluid dynamics software. The local shear stress on the upper wall is computed to evaluate the efficiency of drag reduction. Many factors can affect drag reduction. The factors investigated in this study are the rate of air injection, bubble size, area of air injection, flow speed, and measured position of the shear stress. These factors have been investigated through the analysis of variance, which has revealed that the rate of air injection and water flow speed dominate the efficiency of drag reduction by a mixture film. According to the results, the drag can be reduced by an average of 83.4%; and when the configuration of the parametric levels is optimum the maximum drag reduction of 88.5% is achieved. The turbulent fluid and particle interaction in the turbulent boundary layer for cross flow over a cylinder has been experimentally studied. A phase-Doppler anemometer was used to measure the mean and fluctuating velocities of both phases. Two size ranges of particles (30μm–60μm and 80μm–150μm) at certain concentrations were used for considering the effects of particle sizes on the mean velocity profiles and on the turbulent intensity levels. The measurements clearly demonstrated that the larger particles damped fluid turbulence. For the smaller particles, this damping effect was less noticeable. The measurements further showed a delay in the separation point for two phase turbulent cross flow over a cylinder. The project supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China  相似文献

We investigated the mechanism of residual gas trapping at a microscopic level. We imaged trapped air bubbles in a Berea sandstone chip after spontaneous imbibition at atmospheric pressure. The pore structure and trapped bubbles were observed by microfocused X-ray computed tomography. Distributions of trapped bubbles in Berea and Tako sandstone were imaged in coreflooding at a capillary number of 1.0 × 10−6. Trapped bubbles are of two types, those occupying the center of the pore with a pore-scale size and others having a pore-network scale size. In low-porosity media such as sandstone, connected bubbles contribute greatly to trapped gas saturation. Effects of capillary number and injected water volume were investigated using a packed bed of glass beads 600μm in diameter, which had high porosity (38%). The trapped N2 bubbles are stable against the water flow rate corresponding to a capillary number of 1.0 × 10−4.  相似文献

Many theoretical and experimental papers [1–4] have been devoted to investigating the turbulent boundary layer in the initial section of a channel. For the most part, however, the flow of an incompressible fluid with constant parameters is considered. There are many practical cases in which it is of interest to treat the development of the turbulent boundary layer of gas in the initial section of a pipe when conditions are strongly nonisothermal. A solution of a problem of this type, based on the theory of limit laws, is given in paper [1]. The present article extends this solution to the case of the flow of a high-enthalpy gas when the effect of gas dissociation on the turbulent boundary layer characteristics must be taken into account. We shall consider the flow of a mixture of i gases which is in a frozen state inside the boundary layer, and in an equilibrium state on its boundaries. Formulas are derived for the laws of friction and heat exchange, and a solution is given for the turbulent boundary layer equations in the initial section of the pipe when the wall temperature is constant and the gas flows at a subsonic velocity.Finally the authors are grateful to S. The results of an experimental study of the injection of concentrated polymer solutions into the near-wall region of a turbulent pipe flow are reported. The injection experiments described here show drag reduction that was significantly larger than that obtained for homogeneous polymer solutions of the same average concentration. Local drag reduction and friction behavior was obtained by measuring pressure differences over a test section of 13 m in length. Furthermore the flow behaviour of the injected polymer solution was investigated by flow visualization experiments. Velocity profile measurements elucidate in case of near-wall injection that the turbulent structure could be altered in the near-wall and also in the core region of the pipe flow, indicating that the polymer lumps and threads created by the near-wall injection are able to influence a much wider spectrum of turbulent eddies in comparison to centreline injection or, all the more, to homogeneous drag reduction.  相似文献

When concentrated polymer solutions are injected into the core-region of a turbulent pipe or channel flow, the injected polymer solution forms a thread which preserves its identity far beyond the injection point. The resulting drag reduction is called heterogeneous drag reduction.This study presents experimental results on the mechanism of this type of drag reduction. The experiments were carried out to find out whether this drag reduction is caused by small amounts of polymer removed from the thread and dissolved in the near-wall region of the flow or by an interaction of the polymer thread with the turbulence. The friction behavior of this type of drag reduction was measured for different concentrations in pipes of different cross-sections, but of identical hydraulic diameter. The parameters of the injection, i.e. injector geometry as well as the ratio of the injection to the bulk velocity, were varied. In one set of experiments the polymer thread was sucked out through an orifice and the friction behavior in the pipe was determined downstream of the orifice. In another experiment, near-wall fluid was led into a bypass in order to measure its drag reducing properties. The turbulent/non-turbulent interface (TNTI) in an adverse pressure gradient (APG, β = 1.45) turbulent boundary layer (TBL) is explored here by using direct numerical simulation (DNS) data; β is the Clauser pressure gradient parameter. For comparison, the DNS data for a zero pressure gradient (ZPG) TBL is included. The interface is extracted with an approach based on enstrophy criteria. Depending on the enstrophy, the outer boundary layer flow can be classified into the free stream, boundary layer wake, and intermittent flow regimes. The fractal dimension of the interface is obtained by using the box-counting algorithm, and was found to be constant over a long range of box sizes. The TNTI shows a monofractal behavior. The geometric complexity of a TNTI can be determined in terms of the genus, which is defined as the number of handles in a geometric object. We examine the volume and projection area of the genus of the TNTI to analyze the entrainment process. The geometric complexity of the APG TBL interface and the local entrainment are greater than those of the ZPG TBL, as is evident in the increases in the genus near the interface. The local entrainment velocity is dominantly affected by the viscous diffusion at the interface.  相似文献

The reduction characteristic of turbulent drag and heat transfer of drag reduction surfactant solution flowing in a helically coiled pipe were experimentally investigated. The drag reduction surfactant used in the present study was the amine oxide type nonionic surfactant of oleyldihydroxyethylamineoxide (ODEAO, C22H45NO3=371). The zwitterion surfactant of cetyldimethylaminoaciticacidbetaine (CDMB, C20H41NO2=327) was added by 10% to the ODEAO solution in order to avoid the chemical degradation of ODEAO by ionic impurities in a test tape water. The experiments of flow drag and heat transfer reduction were carried out in the helically coiled pipe of coil to pipe diameter ratio of 37.5 and the helically coiled pipe length to pipe diameter of 1180.5 (pipe diameter of 14.4 mm) at various concentrations, temperatures and flow velocities of the ODEAO surfactant solution. The ODEAO solution showed a non-Newtonian behavior at high concentration of the ODEAO. From the experimental results, it was observed that the friction factor of the ODEAO surfactant solution flowing through the coiled pipe was decreased to a great extent in comparison with water as a Newtonian fluid in the turbulent flow region. Heat transfer measurements for water and the ODEAO solution were performed in both laminar and turbulent flow regions under the uniform heat flux boundary condition. The heat transfer coefficients for the ODEAO solution flow were the same as water flow in the laminar region. On the other hand, heat transfer reduction of the ODEAO solution flow was remarkedly reduced as compared with that of the water flow in the turbulent flow region.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted in the 12-inch diameter tunnel at the Applied Research Laboratory, Pennsylvania State University using the tunnel wall boundary layer to determine the influence of surface roughness on microbubble drag reduction. To accomplish this, carbon dioxide was injected through a slot at rates of 0.001 m3/s to 0.011 m3/s, and the resulting skin friction drag measured on a 317.5-mm long by 152.4-mm span balance. In addition to the hydrodynamically smooth balance plate, additional plates were covered with roughly 75, 150, and 300 micron grit. Over the speed range tested of 7.6, 10.7, and 13.7 m/s, the roughness ranged from smooth to fully rough. Not only was microbubble drag reduction achieved over the rough surfaces, but the % drag reduction at a given gas flow rate was larger for larger roughness. Scaling of the data is discussed. Comparison against results of a polymer drag reduction experiment, using the same facility, is made. Finally, a measure of the expected persistence of the phenomenon is given.  相似文献

通过在平板壁面施加不同频率振幅的压电陶瓷振子周期性扰动,进行了湍流边界层主动控制减阻的实验研究.在压电陶瓷振子最大减阻工况下(80 V和160Hz),使用单丝边界层探针对压电振子自由端下游2mm处进行测量,得到不同法向位置流向速度信号的时间序列.通过对比施加控制前后的多尺度分析,发现压电振子产生的扰动只对近壁区产生影响,使得近壁区大尺度脉动降低,小尺度脉动强度增大,而对边界层的外区则基本没有影响.进一步对大尺度和小尺度的脉动信号进行条件平均,发现压电振子产生的扰动对小尺度脉动的影响在时间相位上并不均匀,小尺度脉动强度在大尺度脉动为正时比在大尺度脉动为负时具有更明显的增加.这表明壁面周期扰动主要通过使大尺度高速扫掠流体破碎为小尺度结构,来影响相应的高壁面摩擦事件,从而达到减阻效果.   相似文献

纵向沟槽壁面的湍流边界层,当沟槽的脊-脊内尺度无量纲展向间距s+ 在一定范围内,与光滑壁面湍流边界层相比,具有减阻效应;并在s+ 约为17 个黏性长度单位时减阻效果达到最优,之后其减阻趋弱,直至增阻;其原因可能是沟槽壁面湍流边界层由于“开尔文-亥姆霍兹” 不稳定性而产生的一种“类开尔文-亥姆霍兹”展向涡结构. 实验采用烟雾流动显示技术,首次在风洞中显示了这种“类开尔文-亥姆霍兹” 展向涡结构,确认了其存在性,并在概念上简单勾勒了其结构模型.   相似文献
