LES of a Multi-burner Annular Gas Turbine Combustor   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In this study, Large Eddy Simulation (LES) has been used to predict the flow, mixing and combustion in both a single burner laboratory gas turbine combustor and in an 18 burner annular combustor, having identical cross sections. The LES results for the single burner laboratory combustor are compared with experimental data for a laboratory model of this combustor, and with other LES predictions, with good agreement. An explicit finite volume based LES model, using the mixed subgrid model together with a partially stirred reactor model for the turbulence chemistry interactions, is used. For the annular combustor, with the swirlers parameterized by jet inflow boundary conditions, we have investigated the influence of the a-priori unknown combustor exit impedance, the influence of the swirler characteristics and the fuel type. The combustion chemistry of methane–air and n-decane–air combustion is modeled by a two-step reaction mechanism, whereas NOx is separately modeled with a one-step mechanism. No experimental data exists for the annular combustor, but these results are compared with the single burner LES and experimental results available. The combustor exit impedance, the swirler- and fuel characteristics all seem to influence the combusting flow through the acoustics of the annular combustor. To examine this in greater detail time-series and eigenmodes of the combustor flow fields are analyzed and comparisons are made also with results from conventional thermoacoustic eigenmode analysis, with reasonable agreement. The flow and pressure distributions in the annular combustor are described in some detail and the mechanisms by which the burners interact are outlined.  相似文献

Fuel efficiency improvement and harmful emission reduction are the paramount driving forces for development of gas turbine combustors. Lean-burn combustors can accomplish these goals, but require specific flow topologies to overcome their sensitivity to combustion instabilities. Large Eddy Simulations (LES) can accurately capture these complex and intrinsically unsteady flow fields, but estimating the appropriate numerical resolution and subgrid model(s) still remain challenges. This paper discusses the prediction of non-reacting flow fields in the DLR gas turbine model combustor using LES. Several important features of modern gas turbine combustors are present in this model combustor: multiple air swirlers and recirculation zones for flame stabilisation. Good overall agreement is obtained between LES outcomes and experimental results, both in terms of time-averaged and temporal RMS values. Findings of this study include a strong dependence of the opening angle of the swirling jet inside the combustion chamber on the subgrid viscosity, which acts mainly through the air mass flow split between the two swirlers in the DLR model combustor. This paper illustrates the ability of LES to obtain accurate flow field predictions in complex gas turbine combustors making use of open-source software and computational resources available to industry.  相似文献

This work is concerned with the investigation of fluid-mechanical behaviour and the performance of different subgrid-scale models for LES in the numerical prediction of a confined axisymmetrical bluff-body flow. Four subgrid-scale turbulence models comprising the Smagorinsky model, Dynamic Smagorinsky model, WALE model and subgrid turbulent kinetic energy model, are validated and compared directly against the experimental data. Two different mesh counts are used for the LES studies, one with a higher mesh resolution in the shear layer than the other. It is found that increasing the mesh resolution improves the time-averaged fluctuating velocity profiles, but has less effect on the time-averaged filtered velocity profiles. A comparison against experiment shows that the recirculation zone length is well predicted using LES. The accuracy of the four different subgrid scale models is then assessed by comparing the LES results using the dense mesh with the experiment. Comparisons with the time-averaged axial and radial velocity profiles demonstrate that LES displays good agreement with the experimental data, with the essential flow features captured both qualitative and quantitatively. The subgrid velocity also matches well with the experimental results, but a slight underprediction of the inner shear layer is observed for all subgrid models. In general, it is found that the Smagorinsky and WALE models are more dissipative than the Dynamic Smagorinsky model and subgrid TKE model. Comparison of the spectra against the experiment shows that LES can capture dominant features of the turbulent flow with reasonable accuracy, and weak spectral peaks related to the Kevin-Helmholtz instability and helical vortex shedding are present.  相似文献

This large eddy simulation (LES) study is applied to three different premixed turbulent flames under lean conditions at atmospheric pressure. The hierarchy of complexity of these flames in ascending order are a simple Bunsen-like burner, a sudden-expansion dump combustor, and a typical swirl-stabilized gas turbine burner–combustor. The purpose of this paper is to examine numerically whether the chosen combination of the Smagorinsky turbulence model for sgs fluxes and a novel turbulent premixed reaction closure is applicable over all the three combustion configurations with varied degree of flow and turbulence. A quality assessment method for the LES calculations is applied. The cold flow data obtained with the Smagorinsky closure on the dump combustor are in close proximity with the experiments. It moderately predicts the vortex breakdown and bubble shape, which control the flame position on the double-cone burner. Here, the jet break-up at the root of the burner is premature and differs with the experiments by as much as half the burner exit diameter, attributing the discrepancy to poor grid resolution. With the first two combustion configurations, the applied subgrid reaction model is in good correspondence with the experiments. For the third case, a complex swirl-stabilized burner–combustor configuration, although the flow field inside the burner is only modestly numerically explored, the level of flame stabilization at the junction of the burner–combustor has been rather well captured. Furthermore, the critical flame drift from the combustor into the burner was possible to capture in the LES context (which was not possible with the RANS plus kɛ model), however, requiring tuning of a prefactor in the reaction closure.  相似文献

We present an original timesaving joint RANS/LES approach to simulate turbulent premixed combustion. It is intended mainly for industrial applications where LES may not be practical. It is based on successive RANS/LES numerical modelling, where turbulent characteristics determined from RANS simulations are used in LES equations for estimation of the subgrid chemical source and viscosity. This approach has been developed using our TFC premixed combustion model, which is based on a generalization of the Kolmogorov’s ideas. We assume existence of small-scale statistically equilibrium structures not only of turbulence but also of the reaction zones. At the same time, non-equilibrium large-scale structures of reaction sheets and turbulent eddies are described statistically by model combustion and turbulence equations in RANS simulations or follow directly without modelling in LES. Assumption of small-scale equilibrium gives an opportunity to express the mean combustion rate (controlled by small-scale coupling of turbulence and chemistry) in the RANS and LES sub-problems in terms of integral or subgrid parameters of turbulence and the chemical time, i.e. the definition of the reaction rate is similar to that of the mean dissipation rate in turbulence models where it is expressed in terms of integral or subgrid turbulent parameters. Our approach therefore renders compatible the combustion and turbulent parts of the RANS and LES sub-problems and yields reasonable agreement between the RANS and averaged LES results. Combining RANS simulations of averaged fields with LES method (and especially coupled and acoustic codes) for simulation of corresponding nonstationary process (and unsteady combustion regimes) is a promising strategy for industrial applications. In this work we present results of simulations carried out employing the joint RANS/LES approach for three examples: High velocity premixed combustion in a channel, combustion in the shear flow behind an obstacle and the impinging flame (a premixed flame attached to an obstacle).  相似文献

Large Eddy Simulations (LES) of a swirl-stabilized natural gas-air flame in a laboratory gas turbine combustor is performed using six different LES combustion models to provide a head-to-head comparative study. More specifically, six finite rate chemistry models, including the thickened flame model, the partially stirred reactor model, the approximate deconvolution model and the stochastic fields model have been studied. The LES predictions are compared against experimental data including velocity, temperature and major species concentrations measured using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), OH Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (OH-PLIF), OH chemiluminescence imaging and one-dimensional laser Raman scattering. Based on previous results a skeletal methane-air reaction mechanism based on the well-known Smooke and Giovangigli mechanism was used in this work. Two computational grids of about 7 and 56 million cells, respectively, are used to quantify the influence of grid resolution. The overall flow and flame structures appear similar for all LES combustion models studied and agree well with experimental still and video images. Takeno flame index and chemical explosives mode analysis suggest that the flame is premixed and resides within the thin reaction zone. The LES results show good agreement with the experimental data for the axial velocity, temperature and major species, but differences due to the choice of LES combustion model are observed and discussed. Furthermore, the intrinsic flame structure and the flame dynamics are similarly predicted by all LES combustion models examined. Within this range of models, there is no strong case for deciding which model performs the best.  相似文献

This report provides an assessment of current turbulent flow calculation methods for hypersonic propulsion flowpaths, particularly the scramjet engine. Emphasis is placed on Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) methods, but some discussion of newer methods such as large eddy simulation (LES) is also provided. The report is organized by considering technical issues throughout the scramjet-powered vehicle flowpath, including laminar-to-turbulent boundary layer transition, shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interactions, scalar transport modeling (specifically the significance of turbulent Prandtl and Schmidt numbers), and compressible mixing. Unit problems are primarily used to conduct the assessment. In the combustor, results from calculations of a direct connect supersonic combustion experiment are also used to address the effects of turbulence model selection and in particular settings for the turbulent Prandtl and Schmidt numbers. It is concluded that RANS turbulence modeling shortfalls are still a major limitation to the accuracy of hypersonic propulsion simulations, whether considering individual components or an overall system. Newer methods such as LES-based techniques may be promising, but are not yet at a maturity to be used routinely by the hypersonic propulsion community. The need for fundamental experiments to provide data for turbulence model development and validation is discussed.  相似文献

A complementary experimental and computational study of the flow and mixing in a single annular gas turbine combustor has been carried out. The object of the investigation is a generic mixing chamber model, representing an unfolded segment of a simplified Rich-Quick-Lean (RQL) combustion chamber operating under isothermal, non-reacting conditions at ambient pressure. Two configurations without and with secondary air injection were considered. To provide an appropriate reference database several planar optical measurement techniques (time-resolved flow visualisation, PIV, QLS) were used. The PIV measurements have been performed providing profiles of all velocity and Reynolds-stress components at selected locations within the combustor. Application of a two-layer hybrid LES/RANS (HLR) method coupling a near-wall k − ε RANS model with conventional LES in the core flow was the focus of the computational work. In addition to the direct comparison with the experimental results, the HLR performance is comparatively assessed with the results obtained by using conventional LES using the same (coarser) grid as HLR and two eddy-viscosity-based RANS models. The HLR model reproduced all important flow features, in particular with regard to the penetrating behaviour of the secondary air jets, their interaction with the swirled main flow, swirl-induced free recirculation zone evolution and associated precessing-vortex core phenomenon in good agreement with experimental findings.  相似文献

Large eddy simulation (LES) models for flamelet combustion are analyzed by simulating premixed flames in turbulent stagnation zones. ALES approach based on subgrid implementation of the linear eddy model(LEM) is compared with a more conventional approach based on the estimation of the turbulent burning rate. The effects of subgrid turbulence are modeled within the subgrid domain in the LEM-LES approach and the advection (transport between LES cells) of scalars is modeled using a volume-of-fluid (VOF) Lagrangian front tracking scheme. The ability of the VOF scheme to track the flame as a thin front on the LES grid is demonstrated. The combined LEM-LES methodology is shown to be well suited for modeling premixed flamelet combustion. The geometric characteristics of the flame surfaces, their effects on resolved fluid motion and flame-turbulence interactions are well predicted by the LEM-LES approach. It is established here that local laminar propagation of the flamelets needs to be resolved in addition to the accurate estimation of the turbulent reaction rate. A linear eddy model for subgrid mixing and combustion has been coupled to a large eddy simulation of the turbulent nonpremixed piloted jet flame (Sandia Flame D). For the combustion reaction, simplified, single-step, irreversible, Arrhenius kinetics are used. The large scale and the subgrid structure of the flow are compared with experimental observations and, where appropriate, with a flamelet model of the flame. The main objective of this work is to demonstrate the feasibility of the LES-LEM approach for determining the structure of the subgrid scalar dissipation rate and the turbulence-chemistry interactions. The results for the large- and subgrid-scale structure of the flow show a reasonable agreement with the experimental observations.  相似文献

Simulations of an experimental hydrogen-fueled scramjet combustor are conducted using a novel dynamic hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes/large-eddy simulation (DHRL) modeling framework. The combustor has a Mach 2 core flow with a ramp fuel injector resulting in an equivalence ratio of 0.17. Three grid resolutions are obtained using local refinement by a factor of two in each direction in the fuel mixing and combustion region, and results from the three grids are used to understand the effect of grid refinement. Simulations reproduce temperature, pressure, velocity, and fuel concentrations in reasonable agreement with experimental measurements. Although heat release decreases on average, as the mesh is refined, peaks of heat release are intensified causing locally elevated temperatures. Spectral analysis of turbulence kinetic energy and heat release suggests stringent resolution requirements for reacting simulations capable of accurately resolving the effects of chemical reactions. Using the medium grid the DHRL model is compared to the improved delayed detached eddy simulation (IDDES) model and two Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) models. Overall, the DHRL framework significantly outperforms other methods when compared to the experimental pressure rise. Additionally, spectral analysis suggests that the current framework is capable of accurately resolving turbulent structures at frequencies higher than IDDES. The study is the first documenting the use of DHRL for supersonic reacting flow and results suggest that it is a viable alternative to existing turbulence treatments for these types of flows.  相似文献

The accuracy of large-eddy simulation (LES) of a turbulent premixed Bunsen flame is investigated in this paper. To distinguish between discretization and modeling errors, multiple LES, using different grid sizes h but the same filterwidth Δ, are compared with the direct numerical simulation (DNS). In addition, LES using various values of Δ but the same ratio Δ/h are compared. The chemistry in the LES and DNS is parametrized with the standard steady premixed flamelet for stochiometric methane-air combustion. The subgrid terms are closed with an eddy-viscosity or eddy-diffusivity approach, with an exception of the dominant subgrid term, which is the subgrid part of the chemical source term. The latter subgrid contribution is modeled by a similarity model based upon 2Δ, which is found to be superior to such a model based upon Δ. Using the 2Δ similarity model for the subgrid chemistry the LES produces good results, certainly in view of the fact that the LES is completely wrong if the subgrid chemistry model is omitted. The grid refinements of the LES show that the results for Δ = h do depend on the numerical scheme, much more than for h = Δ/2 and h = Δ/4. Nevertheless, modeling errors and discretization error may partially cancel each other; occasionally the Δ = h results were more accurate than the h ≤ Δ results. Finally, for this flame LES results obtained with the present similarity model are shown to be slightly better than those obtained with standard β-pdf closure for the subgrid chemistry.  相似文献

In this paper LES of flame wall interaction using a non-adiabatic FGM approach is reported for a premixed methane fuel jet impinging on a spherical disk. Nitrogen is used as co-flow in order to avoid the interaction with the surrounding air and combustion. The flow field is described by means of the Smagorinsky model with Germano procedure for SGS stresses. The SGS scalar flux in scalar transport equations is modeled by the linear eddy diffusivity model. Two aspects are especially addressed in this paper. First focus is on the grid resolution required near the wall without including a special wall-adapted SGS modeling in reacting configurations. The second aspect is devoted to the integration of the near wall kinetic effects into the FGM framework. The results for the flow field, mixing and combustion properties are presented and analyzed in terms of grid resolution, Reynolds number (in reacting and non-reacting case) and adiabaticity. Comparisons with available experimental data show satisfactory agreement. An outline of the thermal and flow boundary layer analysis is subsequently provided.  相似文献

A large eddy simulation (LES) is performed for turbulent flow around a bluff body inside a sudden expansion cylinder chamber, a configuration which resembles a premixed gas turbine combustor. To promote turbulent mixing and to accommodate flame stability, a flame holder is installed inside the combustion chamber. The Smagorinsky model and the Lagrangian dynamic subgrid-scale model are employed and tested. The calculated Reynolds number is 5,000 based on the bulk velocity and the diameter of inlet pipe. The simulation code is constructed by using a general coordinate system based on the physical contravariant velocity components. The predicted turbulent statistics are evaluated by comparing with the laser-doppler velocimetry (LDV) measurement data. The agreement of LES with the experimental data is shown to be satisfactory. Emphasis is placed on the time-dependent evolutions of turbulent vortical structures behind the flame holder. The numerical flow visualizations depict the behavior of large-scale vortices. The turbulent behavior behind the flame holder is analyzed by visualizing the sectional views of vortical structure. The highly turbulent flow occurring inside gas-turbine combustors requires accurate simulation of scalar mixing if CFD methods are to be used with confidence in design. This has motivated the present paper, which describes the implementation of a passive scalar transport equation into an LES code, including assessment/testing of alternative discretisation schemes to avoid over/undershoots and excessive smoothing. Both second order accurate TVD and higher order accurate DRP schemes are assessed. The best performance is displayed by a DRP method, but this is only true on fine meshes; it produces similar (or larger) errors to a TVD scheme on coarser meshes, and the TVD approach has been retained for LES applications. The unsteady scalar mixing performance of the LES code is validated against published DNS data for a slightly heated channel flow. Excellent agreement between the current LES predictions and DNS data is obtained, for both velocity and scalar statistics. Finally, the developed methodology is applied to scalar transport in a confined co-axial jet mixing flow, for which experimental data are available. Agreement with statistically averaged fields for both velocity and scalar, is demonstrated to be very good, and a considerable improvement over the standard eddy viscosity RANS approach. Illustrations are presented of predicted time-resolved information e.g. time histories, and scalar pdf predictions. The LES results are shown, even using a simple Smagorinsky SGS model, to predict (correctly) lower values of the turbulent Prandtl number in the free shear regions of the flow, compared to higher values in the wall-affected regions. The ability to predict turbulent Prandtl number variations (rather than input these as in combustor RANS CFD models) is an important and promising feature of the LES approach for combustor flow simulation since it is known to be important in determining combustor exit temperature traverse.  相似文献

双模态冲压发动机的不同燃烧模态具有不同的稳焰机制和流态特征,并且在模态转换时伴随着显著的推力变化. 因此,准确判断燃烧模态,对于捕捉发动机的燃烧区位置/范围、释热分布特征,以及为进一步优化燃烧室的设计(流道结构和供油布局) 具有重要意义. 目前尚无鉴别模态的有效试验方法,本文提出了一种模态鉴别的试验方法,并在超燃直连台上开展验证试验. 试验中使用的测量技术包括:壁面静压、高速阴影/纹影、多通道可调谐二极管吸收光谱和高能态碳氢自由基CH* 自发光成像. 利用多种测量方法的组合,可以同时获得燃烧室中气流静温、速度、马赫数分布,释热分布以及燃烧区位置/范围. 这些试验数据能够用于判别模态,并获得不同模态的流动和火焰特征.   相似文献

Turbulent swirling flows and methane-air swirling diffusion combustion are studied by large-eddy simulation (LES) using a Smagorinsky-Lilly subgrid scale turbulence model and a second-order moment (SOM) SGS combustion model, and also by RANS modeling using the Reynolds Stress equation model with the IPCM+wall and IPCM pressure-strain models and SOM combustion model. The LES statistical results for swirling flows give good agreement with the experimental results, indicating that the adopted subgrid-scale turbulence model is suitable for swirling flows. The LES instantaneous results show the complex vortex shedding pattern in swirling flows. The initially formed large vortex structures soon break up in swirling flows. The LES statistical results of combustion modeling are near the experimental results and are as good as the RANS-SOM modeling results. The LES results show that the size and range of large vortex structures in swirling combustion are different from those of isothermal swirling flows, and the chemical reaction is intensified by the large-eddy vortex structures.
