This paper studies the chaotic dynamics of two cylindrical shells nested into each other with a gap and their reinforcing beam, also with a gap, which is subjected to a distributed alternating load. The problem is solved using methods of nonlinear dynamics and the qualitative theory of differential equations. The Novozhilov equations for geometrically nonlinear structures are used as the governing equations. Contact pressure is determined by Kantor’s method. Using finite elements in spatial variables, the partial differential equations for the beam and shells are reduced to the Cauchy problem, which is solved by explicit integration (Euler’s method). The chaotic synchronization of this system is studied.

This paper investigates the nonlinear forced dynamics of an axially moving Timoshenko beam. Taking into account rotary inertia and shear deformation, the equations of motion are obtained through use of constitutive relations and Hamilton’s principle. The two coupled nonlinear partial differential equations are discretized into a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations via Galerkin’s scheme. The set is solved by means of the pseudo-arclength continuation technique and direct time integration. Specifically, the frequency-response curves of the system in the subcritical regime are obtained via the pseudo-arclength continuation technique; the bifurcation diagrams of Poincaré maps are obtained by means of direct time integration of the discretized equations. The resonant response is examined, for the cases when the system possesses a three-to-one internal resonance and when not. Results are shown through time traces, phase-plane portraits, and fast Fourier transforms (FFTs). The results indicate that the system displays a wide variety of rich dynamics.

The bifurcation and chaos of a cable–beam coupled system under simultaneous internal and external resonances are investigated. The combined effects of the nonlinear term due to the cable’s geometric and coupled behavior between the modes of the beam and the cable are considered. The nonlinear partial-differential equations are derived by the Hamiltonian principle. The Galerkin method is applied to truncate the governing equation into a set of ordinary differential equations. The bifurcation diagrams in three separate loading cases, namely, excitation acting on the cable, on the beam and simultaneously on the beam and cable, are analyzed with changing forcing amplitude. Based on careful numerical simulations, bifurcations and possible chaotic motions are represented to reveal the combined effects of nonlinearities on the dynamics of the beam and the cable when they act as an overall structure.

The three-dimensional nonlinear planar dynamics of an axially moving Timoshenko beam is investigated in this paper by means of two numerical techniques. The equations of motion for the longitudinal, transverse, and rotational motions are derived using constitutive relations and via Hamilton’s principle. The Galerkin method is employed to discretize the three partial differential equations of motion, yielding a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations with coupled terms. This set is solved using the pseudo-arclength continuation technique so as to plot frequency-response curves of the system for different cases. Bifurcation diagrams of Poincaré maps for the system near the first instability are obtained via direct time integration of the discretized equations. Time histories, phase-plane portraits, and fast Fourier transforms are presented for some system parameters.

This paper presents the analysis of the global bifurcations and chaotic dynamics for the nonlinear nonplanar oscillations of a cantilever beam subjected to a harmonic axial excitation and transverse excitations at the free end. The governing nonlinear equations of nonplanar motion with parametric and external excitations are obtained. The Galerkin procedure is applied to the partial differential governing equation to obtain a two-degree-of-freedom nonlinear system with parametric and forcing excitations. The resonant case considered here is 2:1 internal resonance, principal parametric resonance-1/2 subharmonic resonance for the in-plane mode and fundamental parametric resonance–primary resonance for the out-of-plane mode. The parametrically and externally excited system is transformed to the averaged equations by using the method of multiple scales. From the averaged equation obtained here, the theory of normal form is applied to find the explicit formulas of normal forms associated with a double zero and a pair of pure imaginary eigenvalues. Based on the normal form obtained above, a global perturbation method is utilized to analyze the global bifurcations and chaotic dynamics in the nonlinear nonplanar oscillations of the cantilever beam. The global bifurcation analysis indicates that there exist the heteroclinic bifurcations and the Silnikov type single-pulse homoclinic orbit in the averaged equation for the nonlinear nonplanar oscillations of the cantilever beam. These results show that the chaotic motions can occur in the nonlinear nonplanar oscillations of the cantilever beam. Numerical simulations verify the analytical predictions.

Models of geometrically nonlinear Euler-Bernoulli, Timoshenko, and Sheremet’ev-Pelekh beams under alternating transverse loading were constructed using the variational principle and the hypothesis method. The obtained differential equation systems were analyzed based on nonlinear dynamics and the qualitative theory of differential equations with using the finite difference method with the approximation O(h2) and the Bubnov-Galerkin finite element method. It is shown that for a relative thickness λ ⩽ 50, accounting for the rotation and bending of the beam normal leads to a significant change in the beam vibration modes.

The nonlinear dynamics of a clamped-clamped/sliding inextensional elastic beam subject to a harmonic axial load is investigated. The Galerkin method is used on the coupled bending-bending-torsional nonlinear equations with inertial and geometric nonlinearities and the resulting two second order ordinary differential equations are studied by the method of multiple time seales and by direct numerical integration. The amplitude equations are analyzed for steady and Hopf bifurcations. Depending on the amplitude of excitation, the damping and the ratio of principal flexural rigidities, various qualitatively distinct frequency response diagrams are uncovered and limit cycles and chaotic motions are found. In the truncated two-degree-of-freedom system the transition from periodic to chaotic amplitude-modulated motions is via the process of torus doubling and subsequent destruction of the torus.

Through the Galerkin method the nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) in time are obtained from the nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) to describe the mo- tion of the coupled structure of a suspended-cable-stayed beam. In the PDEs, the curvature of main cables and the deformation of cable stays are taken into account. The dynamics of the struc- ture is investigated based on the ODEs when the structure is subjected to a harmonic excitation in the presence of both high-frequency principle resonance and 1:2 internal resonance. It is found that there are typical jumps and saturation phenomena of the vibration amplitude in the struc- ture. And the structure may present quasi-periodic vibration or chaos, if the stiffness of the cable stays membrane and frequency of external excitation are disturbed.

The problem of suppressing the vibrations of a hinged–hinged flexible beam that is subjected to primary and principal parametric excitations is tackled. Different control laws are proposed, and saturation phenomenon is investigated to suppress the vibrations of the system. The dynamics of the beam are modeled with a second-order nonlinear ordinary-differential equation. The method of multiple scales is used to derive two-first ordinary differential equations that govern the time variation of the amplitude and phase of the response. These equations are used to determine the steady-state responses and their stability. The results of perturbation solution have been verified through numerical simulations, where different effects of the system parameters on the steady-state amplitude and on saturation phenomena at resonance have been reported.
