Unsteady laminar mixed convection flow (combined free and forced convection flow) along a vertical slender cylinder embedded in a porous medium under the combined buoyancy effect of thermal and species diffusion has been studied. The effect of the permeability of the medium as well as the magnetic field has been included in the analysis. The partial differential equations with three independent variables governing the flow have been solved numerically using a implicit finite difference scheme in combination with the quasilinearization technique. Computations have been carried out for accelerating, decelerating and oscillatory free stream velocity distributions. The effects of the permeability of the medium, buoyancy forces, transverse curvature and magnetic field on skin friction, heat transfer and mass transfer have been studied. It is found that the effect of free stream velocity distribution is more pronounced on the skin friction than on the heat and mass transfer. The permeability and magnetic parameters increase the skin friction, but reduce the heat and mass transfer. The skin friction, heat transfer and mass transfer are enhanced due to the buoyancy forces and curvature parameter. The heat transfer is strongly dependent on the viscous dissipation parameter and the Prandtl number, and the mass transfer on the Schmidt number.  相似文献

Laminar thermosolutal convection in cavities with uniform, constant temperature and mass fraction profiles at the vertical side is studied numerically. The study is conducted in the case where an inert carrier gas (species “1”) present in the cavity is not soluble in species “2”, and do not diffuse into the walls. A mass flux of species “2” into the cavity occurs at the hot vertical wall and a mass flux out of the cavity occurs at the opposite cold wall. The weakly compressible model proposed in this work was used to investigate the flow fields, and heat and mass transfer in cavities filled with binary mixtures of ideal gases. The dimensionless form of the seven governing equations for constant thermophysical properties, except density, show that the problem formulation involves ten dimensionless parameters. The results were validated against numerical results published in the literature for purely thermal convection, and thermodynamic predictions for transient thermosolutal flows. A parametric study has been performed to investigate the effects of the initial conditions, molecular weight ratio, Lewis number, and aspect ratio of the cavity for aiding or opposing buoyancy forces. For the range of parameters considered, the results show that variations in the density field have larger effects on mass transfer than on heat transfer. For opposing buoyancy forces, the numerical simulations predict complex flow structures and possible chaotic behavior for rectangular vertical cavities according to the value of the molecular weight ratio.  相似文献

This paper presents results on the combined effect of thermo‐solutal buoyancy forces on the recirculatory flow behavior in a horizontal channel with backward‐facing step and the ensuing impact on heat and mass transfer phenomena. The governing equations for double diffusive mixed convection are represented in velocity–vorticity form of momentum equations, velocity Poisson equations, energy and concentration equations. Galerkin's finite‐element method has been employed to solve the governing equations. Recirculatory flow fields with heat and mass transfer are simulated for opposing and aiding thermo‐solutal buoyancy forces by assuming suitable boundary conditions for energy and concentration equations. The effect of Richardson number (0.1?Ri?10) and buoyancy ratio (?10?N?10) on the recirculation bubble and Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are studied in detail. For Richardson number greater than unity, distinct variations in the gradients of Nusselt number and Sherwood number with buoyancy ratio are observed for flow regimes with opposing and aiding buoyancy forces. This paper deals with a theoretical (numerical) analysis of the effects that blowing/injection and suction have on the steady mixed convection or combined forced and free convection boundary layer flows over a vertical slender cylinder with a mainstream velocity and a wall surface temperature proportional to the axial distance along the surface of the cylinder. Both cases of buoyancy forces aid and oppose the development of the boundary layer are considered. Similarity equations are derived and their solutions are dependent upon the mixed convection parameter, the non-dimensional transpiration parameter and the curvature parameter, as well as of the Prandtl number. Dual solutions for the previously studied mixed convection boundary layer flows over an impermeable surface of the cylinder are shown to exist also in the present problem for aiding and opposing flow situations.  相似文献

The unsteady laminar free convection boundary layer flows around two-dimensional and axisymmetric bodies placed in an ambient fluid of infinite extent have been studied when the flow is driven by thermal buoyancy forces and buoyancy forces from species diffusion. The unsteadiness in the flow field is caused by both temperature and concentration at the wall which vary arbitrarily with time. The coupled nonlinear partial differential equations with three independent variables governing the flow have been solved numerically using an implicit finite-difference scheme in combination with the quasilinearization technique. Computations have been performed for a circular cylinder and a sphere. The skin friction, heat transfer and mass transfer are strongly dependent on the variation of the wall temperature and concentration with time. Also the skin friction and heat transfer increase or decrease as the buoyancy forces from species diffusion assist and oppose, respectively, the thermal buoyancy force, whereas the mass transfer rate is higher for small values of the ratio of the buoyancy parameters than for large values. The local heat and mass transfer rates are maximum at the stagnation point and they decrease progressively with increase of the angular position from the stagnation point.  相似文献

An analysis is performed to study the flow and heat transfer characteristics of laminar mixed convection boundary layer flows from inclined (including horizontal and vertical) surfaces embedded in a saturated porous medium with constant aiding external flows and uniform surface temperature. Both the streamwise and normal components of the buoyancy forces are retained in the momentum equations. Nondimensionalization of the boundary layer equations results in the following three governing parameter: (1)Gr/Re, the ratio of the Grashof number to the Reynolds number; (2)Pe x =Re x Pr, the Peclet number; (3) φ, the angle of inclination from the horizontal. The resulting nonsimilar equations are solved by an efficient implicit finite-difference scheme. Numerical results are presented for flows with different values ofGr/Re in the range of 0 to 50, over a wide range of the Peclet numbersPe x, and various values of φ ranging from 0 to 90 degrees. It is found that the local surface heat transfer rate increases with increasing the local Peclet number. In addition, as the plate is tilted from the horizontal to the vertical orientation, the local Nusselt number increases for a given Peclet number and the effect of the buoyancy force on the surface heat transfer rate increases.  相似文献

The effect of lateral mass flux on mixed convection heat and mass transfer in a saturated porous medium adjacent to an inclined permeable surface is analyzed. A similarity solution is obtained when surface temperature and concentration, free stream velocity and injection/suction velocity of fluid are prescribed as power functions of distance from the leading edge. The cases when the flow and buoyancy forces are in the same and opposite directions are discussed both for aiding and opposing buoyancy effects. The governing parameters are the mixed convection parameter Gr, the Lewis number Le, the buoyancy ratio N, the lateral mass flux parameter f w, representing the effects of injection or withdrawal of fluid at the wall, and λ which specifies three cases of the inclined plate. The interactive effect of these parameters on heat and mass transfer rates are presented. It is observed that the diffusion ratio (Le) has a more pronounced effect on concentration field than on flow and temperature fields. It is found that the rates of heat and mass transfer increase with suction and decrease with injection of the fluid. Received on 31 August 2000 / Published online: 29 November 2001  相似文献

The steady natural convection flow on a horizontal cone embedded in a saturated porous medium with non-uniform wall temperature/concentration or heat/mass flux and suction/injection has been investigated. Non-similar solutions have been obtained. The nonlinear coupled differential equations under boundary layer approximations governing the flow have been numerically solved. The Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are found to depend on the buoyancy forces, suction/injection rates, variation of wall temperature/concentration or heat/mass flux, Lewis number and the non-Darcy parameter.  相似文献

This paper studies combined heat and mass transfer by laminar natural convection from a vertical plate maintained with uniform surface heat flux and species concentration. Very accurate finite-difference solutions of a set of nonsimilarity equations have been obtained for most practical gaseous solutions (Pr?=?0.7, 0.21 ≤ Sc ≤ 2.1) and aqueous solutions (Pr?=?7, 140 ≤ Sc ≤ 1400). Variations of heat and mass transfer rates with buoyancy ratio and Lewis number are presented. Precise correlations have been developed for predicting heat and mass transfer rates of natural convection arising from single (solutal or thermal) buoyancy force and dual buoyancy forces.  相似文献

The solution to the unsteady mixed convection boundary layer flow and heat transfer problem due to a stretching vertical surface is presented in this paper. The unsteadiness in the flow and temperature fields is caused by the time-dependent of the stretching velocity and the surface temperature. The governing partial differential equations with three independent variables are first transformed into ordinary differential equations, before they are solved numerically by a finite-difference scheme. The effects of the unsteadiness parameter, buoyancy parameter and Prandtl number on the flow and heat transfer characteristics are thoroughly examined. Both assisting and opposing buoyant flows are considered. It is observed that for assisting flow, the solutions exist for all values of buoyancy parameter, whereas for opposing flow, they exist only if the magnitude of the buoyancy parameter is small. Comparison with known results for steady-state flow is excellent.  相似文献

The mixed convection flow and heat transfer from an exponentially stretching vertical surface in a quiescent fluid is analyzed using similarity solution technique. Wall temperature and stretching velocity are assumed to have specific exponential function forms. The influence of buoyancy along with viscous dissipation on the convective transport in the boundary layer region is analyzed in both aiding and opposing flow situations. The flow is governed by the mixed convection parameter Gr/Re2. The velocity and temperature inside the boundary layer are observed to be influenced by the parameters like Prandtl number Pr, Gebhart number Gb. Significant changes are observed in non-dimensional skin friction and heat transfer coefficients due to viscous dissipation in the medium. The flow and temperature distributions inside the boundary layer are analyzed and the results for non-dimensional skin friction and heat transfer coefficients are discussed through computer generated plots.  相似文献

The objective of the present study is to develop a novel similarity model for analysis of mixed convection heat and mas transfer in combined stagnation and rotation-induced flows over a rotating disk. Thermal and concentration (solutal) buoyancy effects stemmed from temperature and concentration gradients in rotational as well as gravitational forces fields are all taken into account. The influences of the forced flow, disk rotation, thermal buoyancy, buoyancy ratio and the fluid properties, i.e. Prandtl and Schmidt numbers, on the flow, temperature and concentration fields and the associated friction factors, heat and mass transfer rates are investigated. The present results reveal the effects of various buoyancy modes with combined forces on the transport phenomena in rotating-disk flows, and the analysis is also useful in understanding the mechanisms of mixed convection in the class of rotating fluids. The unsteady free convection flow over an infinite vertical porous plate, which moves with time-dependent velocity in an ambient fluid, has been studied. The effects of the magnetic field and Hall current are included in the analysis. The buoyancy forces arise due to both the thermal and mass diffusion. The partial differential equations governing the flow have been solved numerically using both the implicit finite difference scheme and the difference-differential method. For the steady case, analytical solutions have also been obtained. The effect of time variation on the skin friction, heat transfer and mass transfer is very significant. Suction increases the skin friction coefficient in the primary flow, and also the Nusselt and Sherwood numbers, but the skin friction coefficient in the secondary flow is reduced. The effect of injection is opposite to that of suction. The buoyancy force, injection and the Hall parameter induce an overshoot in the velocity profiles in the primary flow which changes the velocity gradient from a negative to a positive value, but the magnetic field and suction reduce this velocity overshoot.  相似文献

This study purposes to examine the effects of latent heat transfer associated with the liquid films vaporization on the heat transfer in the natural convection flows driven by the simultaneous presence of combined buoyancy forces of thermal and mass diffusion. Results are especially presented for an air-water system under various conditions. The influence of channel length and system temperatures on the momentum, heat and mass transfer in the flow are investigated in great detail. The important role of transport of latent heat of vaporization under the situations of buoyancy-aiding and opposing flows is clearly demonstrated.  相似文献

The flow and heat transfer characteristics of Oberbeck convection of a couple stress fluid in a vertical porous stratum is investigated. The perturbation method of solution is obtained in terms of buoyancy parameter N valid for small values of N. This limitation is relaxed through numerical solutions using the finite difference technique with an error of 0.1×10-7. The effect of increase in the values of temperature difference between the plates, permeability parameter and couple stress parameter on velocity, temperature, mass flow rate, skin friction and rate of heat transfer are reported. A new achievement is explored to analyse the flow for strong, weak and comparable porosity with the couple stress parameter. It is noted that both the porous parameter and the couple stress parameter suppress the flow. Higher-temperature difference is required to achieve the mass flow rate equivalent to that of viscous flow.  相似文献

The effects of viscous dissipation and heat source/sink on fully developed mixed convection for the laminar flow in a parallel-plate vertical channel are investigated. The plate exchanges heat with an external fluid. Both conditions of equal and different reference temperatures of the external fluid are considered.First, the simple cases of the negligible Brinkman number or the negligible Grashof number are solved analytically. Then, the combined effects of buoyancy forces and viscous dissipation in the presence of heat source/sink are analyzed by a perturbation series method valid for small values of the perturbation parameter. To relax the conditions on the perturbation parameter, the velocity and temperature fields are solved by using the Runge-Kutta fourth-order method with the shooting technique. The velocity, temperature, skin friction, and Nusselt numbers at the plates are discussed numerically and presented through graphs.  相似文献

The steady mixed convection flow and heat transfer from an exponentially stretching vertical surface in a quiescent Maxwell fluid in the presence of magnetic field, viscous dissipation and Joule heating have been studied. The stretching velocity, surface temperature and magnetic field are assumed to have specific exponential function forms for the existence of the local similarity solution. The coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations governing the local similarity flow and heat transfer have been solved numerically by Chebyshev finite difference method. The influence of the buoyancy parameter, viscous dissipation, relaxation parameter of Maxwell fluid, magnetic field and Prandtl number on the flow and heat transfer has been considered in detail. The Nusselt number increases significantly with the Prandtl number, but the skin friction coefficient decreases. The Nusselt number slightly decreases with increasing viscous dissipation parameter, but the skin friction coefficient slightly increases. Maxwell fluid reduces both skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number, whereas buoyancy force enhances them.  相似文献

Boundary layer approximation is applied for mixed convection about a horizontal flat plate in a saturated porous medium with aiding external flows. Similarity solutions are obtained, incorporating the variation of permeabilty, for 1) horizontal flat plate at zero angle of attack with constant heat flux; 2) stagnation point flows about horizontal flat plates with wall temperature varying asT wx 2. The temperature and velocity profiles for different values of Ra/(RePr)3/2 and the parameters governing the flow are obtained. The heat transfer rate is calculated and its implications in a geothermal application is discussed. Further, the criteria for pure mixed convection about horizontal flat plates in a porous media are established.  相似文献

The unsteady laminar free convection flow between two long vertical parallel plates with ramped wall temperature at one boundary has been investigated in the presence of thermal radiation and chemical species concentration. The exact solutions of the momentum, energy and concentration equations have been obtained using the Laplace transform technique. The velocity and temperature profiles, skin-friction and Nusselt number variations are shown graphically and the numerical values of the volume flow rate, the total heat rate and species rate added to the fluid are presented in a table. The influence of different system parameters such as the radiation parameter (R), buoyancy ratio parameter (N), Schmidt number (Sc) and time (t) has been analyzed carefully. A critical analysis of the coupled heat and mass transfer phenomena is provided. The free convective flow due to ramped wall temperature has also been compared with the baseline case of flow due to constant wall temperature.  相似文献
