Optical properties and frequency conversion with AgGaGeS4 crystal

The basic optical property and phase-matching of new mixed AgGaGeS_4 crystal are presented. Frequency conversion, in particular the SHG of 30ns pulses of 9μm emission band of transversely excited atmospheric-pressure (TEA) CO_2 laser, is realized in AgGaGeS_4 for the first time. As high as 0.57% peak power and 0.3% external energy efficiencies, and 0.7mJ harmonic pulse energy are obtained for the 9.55μm emission line at pump intensity of 4% level of the damage threshold.

Optical limiting effect based on stimulated Brillouin scattering in CCl4

The optical limiting effect based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a nonlinear medium was investigated. We numerically treated the nonlinear propagation process with a theoretical model, which includes the spontaneous nature of the initiation of SBS, and obtained optical limiting effect in the process. Energy limiting, pulse reshaping and stabilization have been demonstrated on SBS mechanism with the nonlinear medium CCl_4. The input optical signals were Nd:YAG nanosecond laser pulses with width varying from 16ns to 7ns then to 2ns, the relationship between the transmitted signal and launched pump signal was shown. In the experimental regime, the most stable pulse and a superior energy stabilization of the transmitted pulse were obtained when the laser pulse-width became as short as 2ns. For the energy variation of laser pulses in a wide range of 14－88mJ, the output energy was limited in a quite narrow range 4.5－5.5mJ.

Optical Stabilizer Based on Optical Bistable Devices with All-Fibre Construction

We propose a fibre optical stabilizer constituted by a photoelectric-hybrid optical bistable device in which fibre Bragg grating is used as a light intensity modulator. The intensity noise-reducing ability is well improved through the method by employing two feed signals. As a result, the light intensity variation can be reduced to - 1/64.     

Optical Planar Waveguides in KTiOPO4 Crystals by MeV Oxygen Ion Implantation

We report on the optical planar waveguide formation in KTiOPO4 crystals by single or double oxygen ion implantation at energies of 2.4-3.0 MeV and doses of 1015 ions/cm^2. The dark-line spectroscopy properties are investigated by a prism-coupling method. With an effective refractive index method, the refractive index profiles of the waveguides are reconstructed. The program code TRIM＇98 （transport of ions in matter） is used to simulate the implantation process of oxygen ions into the KTiOPO4 crystal. It is found that an inherent relationship exists between the nuclear damage and the refractive index changes induced by the ion-beam implantation.     

Optical properties and CO_2 laser SHG with HgGa_2S_4

Optical properties and nonlinearity on phase-matching (PM) of two (yellow and orange) phase crystals were investigated in details. Damage threshold was determined in comparison with middle infrared (IR) crystal at identical experimental conditions. Second harmonic generation (SHG) of 30 ns TEA CO2 laser pulses was realized with 5% efficiency in energy and 6.9% in peak power.     

Long Optical Delay Lines Enhanced by Ring Configuration in Optical Fibres

A long optically controlled delay line enhanced by ring configuration is demonstrated by using the group-velocity control of signal pulses based on stimulated Brillouin scattering. In experiment, two optical fibre ring cavities are used： one is used as the Brillouin laser, providing single-mode Stokes wave as probe wave; the other is used as the Brillouin amplifier, working as slow light medium. We achieve a maximum time delay of 215ns using the ring Brillouin amplifier, five times larger than the input probe pulse width of 40ns. In the meantime, a considerable pulse broadening is observed, which agrees well with the theoretical prediction based on linear theory.     

Optical greyscale morphological transformations

Greyscale morphology is more efficient and useful for processing greyscale image. It is the extension of binary morphology by use of a min or max operations. Optics is suitable for the implementation of morphological transformations because of its parallelism. However, greyscale morphology with both greyscale images and greyscale structuring elements is difficult to realize threshold decomposition since it does not commute with threshold. We propose a correlation approach for greyscale morphological transformations using area-coding technique to represent the umbra of surfaces of both greyscale image and greyscale structuring element. A primary experiment of greyscale dilation is presented.

Optical Wavelet Packet Transform

We employ optical wavelet packet transform (OWPT) to propose an opto-electronic system based on volume holography to select the best bases of image banks for image compression, because of the superior processing ability to optical wavelet transform and the potentiality in new application fields. The simulation results show that the best bases chosen are the same as the bases selected by discrete wavelet packet transform (DWPT).Because DWPT is time consuming, especially when the volume of image bank is very large, processing time can be greatly shortened by OWPT.

Spectral Shaping in Rapid Scanning Optical Delay Line of Optical Coherence Tomography

A small spatial optical filter is put into the rapid-scanning optical delay line (RSOD) to shape the spectrum of the reference beam in optical coherence tomography (OCT). The experimental results show that the longitudinal resolution can be improved by a factor of 81% with this method, while at the same time, the signal-to-noise ratio of the OCT system is not much affected. This method can be used in OCT systems that use RSOD as the reference arm with a light source of superluminescent diodes, femtosecond lasers and crystal fibre as well.

Optical Fibre Mode Structures Measured by Collection Mode Near-Field Scanning Optical Microscopy

High order fibre mode structures are measured by a near-field scanning optical microscope (NSOM) and are determined to be consistent with the standard fibre LP patterns. The mode-field distortions of high-order mode LP11 and LP21 structures by far-field measurement are analysed based on scalar diffraction theory, and the maximum distortions may reach as high as 5.1% and 6.2%。 This shows that the method of using the NSOM is more accuracy than the far-field measurement method, especially for high-order mode structures of optical fibres.

Optical repeater utilizing bistable switches

In this paper we report the implementation of optical repeater using bistableswitches.Experimental results with NLIF and BILED switches are presented.The repeater hasthe functions of amplifying,reshaping and retiming.The repeater may satisfy the require-ments for practical applications by replacing the switches with high speed ones.     

Optical Waveguide Formed in RbTiOPO4 Crystal by 6.0 MeV O^3＋ Implantation

A planar optical waveguide was formed in RbTiOP04 crystal by 6.0-MeV oxygen ion implantation with the dose of 2 × 10^15 ions/cm2 at room temperature. Annealing at 200℃ for 30min in air is performed to improve the thermal stability of the waveguide. The dark modes of the waveguide are measured at wavelengths 633 and 1539 nm, respectively. The refractive index profiles in the guiding layer are reconstructed by using the reflectivity calculation method. TRIM＇98 code was carried out to simulate the damage profiles caused by the implantation process to obtain a better understanding of the waveguide formation.     

Large Bandwidth Optical Limiting by Kerr Medium Doped One-Dimensional Coupled Cavity Optical Waveguides

We present a new method to realize large bandwidth optical limiting using Kerr nonlinearity doped one-dimensional coupled cavity optical waveguides (CCOWs). When the incident intensity is weak, the structure is a perfect CCOW that supports a high transmission band. When the intensity is increased, the Kerr effects change the refractive index of the Kerr cavity which results in a large decrease of transmission coefficients in the whole band. We numerically analyse the limiter using the nonlinear transfer matrix method and nonlinear finite difference in time domain method. Optical limiting effects are observed in the whole transmission band, and optimization methods are also discussed.
