Phonon excitations of fractional quantum Hall states at filling factors nu = 1/3, 2/5, 4/7, 3/5, 4/3, and 5/3 are experimentally shown to be based on Landau-level transitions of composite fermions. At filling factor nu = 2/3, however, a linear field dependence of the excitation energy in the high-field regime rather hints towards a spin transition excited by the phonons. We propose to explain this surprising observation by an only partially polarized 2/3 ground state, making the energetically lower lying spin transition also allowed for phonon excitations.  相似文献

The spin degree of freedom in quantum phases of the second Landau level is probed by resonant light scattering. The long wavelength spin wave, which monitors the degree of spin polarization, is at the Zeeman energy in the fully spin-polarized state at ν = 3. At lower filling factors, the intensity of the Zeeman mode collapses, indicating loss of polarization. A novel continuum of low-lying excitations emerges that dominates near ν = 8/3 and ν = 5/2. Resonant Rayleigh scattering reveals that quantum fluids for ν < 3 break up into robust domain structures. While the state at ν = 5/2 is considered to be fully polarized, these results reveal unprecedented roles for spin degrees of freedom.  相似文献

We consider quantum Hall states at even-denominator filling fractions, especially nu=5/2, in the limit of small Zeeman energy. Assuming that a paired quantum Hall state forms, we study spin ordering and its interplay with pairing. We give numerical evidence that at nu=5/2 an incompressible ground state will exhibit spontaneous ferromagnetism. The Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory for the spin degrees of freedom of paired Hall states is a perturbed CP2 model. We compute the coefficients in the GL theory by a BCS Stoner mean-field theory for coexisting order parameters, and show that even if repulsion is smaller than that required for a Stoner instability, ferromagnetic fluctuations can induce a partially or fully polarized superconducting state.  相似文献

We report a theoretical analysis of the half-polarized quantum Hall states observed in a recent experiment. Our numerical results indicate that the ground state energy of the quantum Hall nu = 2 / 3 and nu = 2 / 5 states versus spin polarization has a downward cusp at half the maximal spin polarization. We map the two-component fermion system onto a system of excitons and describe the ground state as a liquid state of excitons with nonzero values of exciton angular momentum.  相似文献

New low-lying excitations are observed by inelastic light scattering at filling factors nu=p/(phip+/-1) of the fractional quantum Hall regime with phi=4. Coexisting with these modes throughout the range nu < or =1/3 are phi=2 excitations seen at 1/3. Both phi=2 and phi=4 excitations have distinct behaviors with temperature and filling factor. The abrupt first appearance of the new modes in the low-energy excitation spectrum at nu > or near 1/3 suggests a marked change in the quantum ground state on crossing the phi=2-->phi=4 boundary at nu=1/3.  相似文献

The nuclear-spin-relaxation rate 1/T(1) has been measured in a bilayer electron system at and around total Landau level filling factor nu=1. The measured 1/T(1), which probes electron spin fluctuations, is found to increase gradually from the quantum Hall (QH) state at low fields through a phase transition to the compressible state at high fields. Furthermore, 1/T(1) in the QH state shows a noticeable increase away from nu=1. These results demonstrate that, as opposed to common assumption, the electron spin degree of freedom is not completely frozen either in the QH or the compressible states.  相似文献

We demonstrate the existence of ferrimagnetic and ferromagnetic phases in a spin phase diagram of coupled lateral quantum dot molecules in the quantum Hall regime. The spin phase diagram is determined from the Hartree-Fock configuration interaction method as a function of electron number N and magnetic field B. The quantum Hall ferrimagnetic phase corresponds to spatially imbalanced spin droplets resulting from strong interdot coupling of identical dots. The quantum Hall ferromagnetic phases correspond to ferromagnetic coupling of spin polarization at filling factors between nu=2 and nu=1.  相似文献

The Hartree-Fock paradigm of bilayer quantum Hall states with finite tunneling at filling factor nu=1 has full pseudospin ferromagnetic order with all the electrons in the lowest symmetric Landau level. Inelastic light scattering measurements of low energy spin excitations reveal major departures from the paradigm at relatively large tunneling gaps. The results indicate the emergence of a novel correlated quantum Hall state at nu=1 characterized by reduced pseudospin order. Marked anomalies occur in spin excitations when pseudospin polarization collapses by application of in-plane magnetic fields.  相似文献

We show that electron-nuclear spin coupling in semiconductor heterostructures is strongly modified by their potential inversion asymmetry. This is demonstrated in a GaAs quantum well, where we observe that the current-induced nuclear spin polarization at Landau-level filling factor nu=2/3 is completely suppressed when the quantum well is made largely asymmetric with gate voltages. Furthermore, we find that the nuclear spin relaxation rate is also modified by the potential asymmetry. These findings strongly suggest that even a very weak Rashba spin-orbit interaction can play a dominant role in determining the electron-nuclear spin coupling.  相似文献

We report magnetotransport measurements of fractional quantum Hall states in an AlAs quantum well around a Landau level filling factor nu=3/2, demonstrating that the quasiparticles are composite fermions (CFs) with a valley degree of freedom. By monitoring the valley level crossings for these states as a function of applied symmetry-breaking strain, we determine the CF valley susceptibility and polarization. The data can be explained well by a simple Landau level fan diagram for CFs, and are in nearly quantitative agreement with the results reported for CF spin polarization.  相似文献

In the two-dimensional electron systems with strong coupling in MgZnO/ZnO heterostructures, the thermal behavior of Ising quantum Hall ferromagnets at the filling factor ν = 2 has been studied. The spin polarization of Hall ferromagnets has been detected by measuring the signal related to the inelastic light scattering by intrasubband spin excitons. A stepwise change in the spin polarization at the phase transition at the filling factors ν = 2,3, and 4 in the heterostructures with different electron densities has been observed. The thermal stability of the Hall ferromagnetic phases at ν = 2 has been studied and the Curie temperature has been estimated. It has been shown that the Curie temperature is determined by the formation energy for domain walls in the Ising quantum Hall ferromagnets.  相似文献

We investigate the electron spin states in the bilayer quantum Hall system at total Landau level filling factor nu=2 exploiting current-pumped and resistively detected NMR. The measured Knight shift, K(S), of 75As nuclei reveals continuous variation of the out-of-plane electronic spin polarization between nearly full and zero as a function of density imbalance. Nuclear spin relaxation measurements indicate a concurrent development of an in-plane spin component. These results provide direct information on the spin configuration in this system and comprise strong evidence for the spin canting suggested by previous experiments.  相似文献

We study interactions between electrons and nuclear spins by using the resistance ( Rxx) peak which develops near the Landau-level filling factor nu = 2/3 as a probe. Temporarily tuning nu to a different value, nu(temp), with a gate demonstrates that the Rxx peak regenerates even after complete depletion ( nu(temp) = 0), while it rapidly relaxes on either side of nu(temp) = 1. This indicates that the nu = 2/3 domain morphology is memorized by the nuclear spins which can be rapidly depolarized by Skyrmions. An additional enhancement in the nuclear spin relaxation around nu = 1/2 and 3/2 suggests a Fermi sea of partially polarized composite fermions.  相似文献

A spin current perpendicular to the electric current is investigated around a Landau level filling factor nu=3 in a GaAs/AlGaAs two-dimensional electron system. Measurements of dynamic nuclear polarization in the vicinity of the edge of a specially designed Hall bar sample indicate that the direction of the spin current with respect to the Hall electric field reverses its polarity at nu=3, where the dissipative current carried by holes in the spin up Landau level is replaced with that by electrons in the spin down Landau level.  相似文献

The spin polarization features of an electron system and the relaxation of nonequilibrium spin excitations near an even-denominator fractional state of 3/2 in a two-dimensional electron system based on the GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure are experimentally investigated. It is shown that the 3/2 state is a singular point in the filling factor dependence of the spin ordering of the two-dimensional electron system, at which the spin subsystem is rearranged. A giant slowing down of the relaxation of spin excitations to the ground state is revealed in a certain range of filling factors near filling factor 3/2.  相似文献

In a GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well of density 1 x 10(11) cm(-2) we observed a fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) at nu = 4/11 and 5/13, and weaker states at nu = 6/17, 4/13, 5/17, and 7/11. These sequences of fractions do not fit into the standard series of integral quantum Hall effects of composite fermions (CF) at nu = p/(2mp +/- 1). They rather can be regarded as the FQHE of CFs attesting to residual interactions between these composite particles. In tilted magnetic fields the nu = 4/11 state remains unchanged, strongly suggesting it to be spin polarized. The weak nu = 7/11 state vanishes quickly with tilt.  相似文献

The activation gap Delta of the fractional quantum Hall states at constant fillings nu=2/3 and 2/5 has been measured as a function of the perpendicular magnetic field B. A linear dependence of Delta on B is observed while approaching the spin-polarization transition. This feature allows a direct measurement of the g factor of composite fermions which appears to be heavily renormalized by interactions and strongly sensitive to the electronic filling factor.  相似文献

Using a "standard" NMR spin-echo technique we determined the spin polarization P of two-dimensional electrons, confined to GaAs quantum wells, from the hyperfine shift of Ga nuclei located in the wells. Concentrating on the temperature ( 0.05 less, similarT less, similar10 K) and magnetic field ( 7 less, similarB less, similar17 T) dependencies of P at Landau level filling factor nu = 1/2, we find that the results are described well by a simple model of noninteracting composite fermions, although some inconsistencies remain when the two-dimensional electron system is tilted in the magnetic field.  相似文献

It is well known that the nu = 2/5 state is unpolarized at zero Zeeman energy, while it is fully polarized at large Zeeman energies. A novel state with a charge/spin density wave order for composite fermions is proposed to exist at intermediate values of the Zeeman coupling for nu = 2/5. This state has half the maximum possible polarization, and can be extended to other incompressible fractions. A Hartree-Fock calculation based on the new approach for all fractional quantum Hall states developed by R. Shankar and the author is used to demonstrate the stability of this state to single-particle excitations and to compute gaps. A very recent experiment shows direct evidence for this state.  相似文献
