The Hartree-Fock paradigm of bilayer quantum Hall states with finite tunneling at filling factor nu=1 has full pseudospin ferromagnetic order with all the electrons in the lowest symmetric Landau level. Inelastic light scattering measurements of low energy spin excitations reveal major departures from the paradigm at relatively large tunneling gaps. The results indicate the emergence of a novel correlated quantum Hall state at nu=1 characterized by reduced pseudospin order. Marked anomalies occur in spin excitations when pseudospin polarization collapses by application of in-plane magnetic fields.

We report magnetotransport measurements of fractional quantum Hall states in an AlAs quantum well around a Landau level filling factor nu=3/2, demonstrating that the quasiparticles are composite fermions (CFs) with a valley degree of freedom. By monitoring the valley level crossings for these states as a function of applied symmetry-breaking strain, we determine the CF valley susceptibility and polarization. The data can be explained well by a simple Landau level fan diagram for CFs, and are in nearly quantitative agreement with the results reported for CF spin polarization.

The quantum Hall (QH) effect in two-dimensional electrons and holes in high quality graphene samples is studied in strong magnetic fields up to 45 T. QH plateaus at filling factors nu = 0, +/-1, +/-4 are discovered at magnetic fields B > 20 T, indicating the lifting of the fourfold degeneracy of the previously observed QH states at nu = +/-4(absolute value(n) + 1/2), where n is the Landau-level index. In particular, the presence of the nu = 0, +/-1 QH plateaus indicates that the Landau level at the charge neutral Dirac point splits into four sublevels, lifting sublattice and spin degeneracy. The QH effect at nu = +/-4 is investigated in a tilted magnetic field and can be attributed to lifting of the spin degeneracy of the n = 1 Landau level.

We investigate the quantum Hall (QH) states near the charge-neutral Dirac point of a high mobility graphene sample in high magnetic fields. We find that the QH states at filling factors nu=+/-1 depend only on the perpendicular component of the field with respect to the graphene plane, indicating that they are not spin related. A nonlinear magnetic field dependence of the activation energy gap at filling factor nu=1 suggests a many-body origin. We therefore propose that the nu=0 and +/-1 states arise from the lifting of the spin and sublattice degeneracy of the n=0 Landau level, respectively.

The nuclear-spin-relaxation rate 1/T(1) has been measured in a bilayer electron system at and around total Landau level filling factor nu=1. The measured 1/T(1), which probes electron spin fluctuations, is found to increase gradually from the quantum Hall (QH) state at low fields through a phase transition to the compressible state at high fields. Furthermore, 1/T(1) in the QH state shows a noticeable increase away from nu=1. These results demonstrate that, as opposed to common assumption, the electron spin degree of freedom is not completely frozen either in the QH or the compressible states.

We investigate the electron spin states in the bilayer quantum Hall system at total Landau level filling factor nu=2 exploiting current-pumped and resistively detected NMR. The measured Knight shift, K(S), of 75As nuclei reveals continuous variation of the out-of-plane electronic spin polarization between nearly full and zero as a function of density imbalance. Nuclear spin relaxation measurements indicate a concurrent development of an in-plane spin component. These results provide direct information on the spin configuration in this system and comprise strong evidence for the spin canting suggested by previous experiments.

The observation of new insulating phases of two-dimensional electrons in the first excited Landau level is reported. These states, which are manifested as reentrant integer quantized Hall effects, exist alongside well-developed even-denominator fractional quantized Hall states at nu = 7/2 and 5/2 and new odd-denominator states at nu = 3+1/5 and 3+4/5.

We have investigated the behavior of electronic phases of the second Landau level under tilted magnetic fields. The fractional quantum Hall liquids at nu=2+1/5 and 2+4/5 and the solid phases at nu=2.30, 2.44, 2.57, and 2.70 are quickly destroyed with tilt. This behavior can be interpreted as a tilt driven localization of the 2+1/5 and 2+4/5 fractional quantum Hall liquids and a delocalization through the melting of solid phases in the top Landau level, respectively. The evolution towards the classical Hall gas of the solid phases is suggestive of antiferromagnetic ordering.

We measure the chemical potential jump across the fractional gap in the low-temperature limit in the two-dimensional electron system of GaAs/AlGaAs single heterojunctions. In the fully spin-polarized regime, the gap for filling factor nu=1/3 increases linearly with the magnetic field and is coincident with that for nu=2/3, reflecting the electron-hole symmetry in the spin-split Landau level. In low magnetic fields, at the ground-state spin transition for nu=2/3, a correlated behavior of the nu=1/3 and nu=2/3 gaps is observed.

We study bilayer quantum Hall systems at total Landau level filling factor nu=1 in the presence of interlayer tunneling and coupling to a dissipative normal fluid. Describing the dynamics of the interlayer phase by an effective quantum dissipative XY model, we show that there exists a critical dissipation sigma(c) set by the conductance of the normal fluid. For sigma>sigma(c), interlayer tunnel splitting drives the system to a nu=1 quantum Hall state.

Spin-filtered edge states and quantum Hall effect in graphene
Electron edge states in graphene in the quantum Hall effect regime can carry both charge and spin. We show that spin splitting of the zeroth Landau level gives rise to counterpropagating modes with opposite spin polarization. These chiral spin modes lead to a rich variety of spin current states, depending on the spin-flip rate. A method to control the latter locally is proposed. We estimate Zeeman spin splitting enhanced by exchange, and obtain a spin gap of a few hundred Kelvin.

The frictional drag between parallel two-dimensional electron systems has been measured in a regime of strong interlayer correlations. When the bilayer system enters the excitonic quantized Hall state at total Landau level filling factor nu(T) = 1, the longitudinal component of the drag vanishes but a strong Hall component develops. The Hall drag resistance is observed to be accurately quantized at h/e(2).

We investigate a domain structure of pseudospins, a soliton lattice in the bilayer quantum Hall state at total Landau level filling factor nu = 1, in a tilted magnetic field, where the pseudospin represents the layer degree of freedom. An anomalous peak in the magnetoresistance Rxx appears at the transition point between the commensurate and incommensurate phases. The Rxx at the peak is highly anisotropic for the angle between the in-plain magnetic field B parallel and the current, and indicates a formation of the soliton lattice aligned parallel to B parallel. The temperature dependence of the Rxx peak reveals that the dissipation is caused by thermal fluctuations of pseudospin solitons. We also study a phase diagram of the bilayer nu = 1 system, and the effects of density imbalance between the two layers.

At low Landau level filling of a two-dimensional electron system, typically associated with the formation of an electron crystal, we observe local minima in Rxx at filling factors nu = 2/11, 3/17, 3/19, 2/13, 1/7, 2/15, 2/17, and 1/9. Each of these developing fractional quantum Hall (FQHE) states appears only above a filling-factor-specific temperature. This can be interpreted as the melting of an electron crystal and subsequent FQHE liquid formation. The observed sequence of FQHE states follows the series of composite fermion states emanating from nu = 1/6 and nu = 1/8.

We consider the two lowest Landau levels at half filling. In the higher Landau level (nu = 5/2), we find a first-order phase transition separating a compressible striped phase from a paired quantum Hall state, which is identified as the Moore-Read state. The critical point is very near the Coulomb potential and the transition can be driven by increasing the width of the electron layer. We find a much weaker transition (either second-order or a crossover) from pairing to the composite fermion Fermi-liquid behavior. A very similar picture is obtained for the lowest Landau level, but the transition point is not near the Coulomb potential.

We report a theoretical analysis of the half-polarized quantum Hall states observed in a recent experiment. Our numerical results indicate that the ground state energy of the quantum Hall nu = 2 / 3 and nu = 2 / 5 states versus spin polarization has a downward cusp at half the maximal spin polarization. We map the two-component fermion system onto a system of excitons and describe the ground state as a liquid state of excitons with nonzero values of exciton angular momentum.

We report here a systematic study of the energy gaps at the odd-integer quantum Hall states nu = 3 and 5 under tilted magnetic (B) fields in a high quality Si two-dimensional electron system. Out of the coincidence region, the valley splitting is independent of the in-plane fields. However, the nu = 3 valley gap differs by about a factor of 3 (Deltav approximately 0.4 vs 1.2 K) on different sides of the coincidence. More surprisingly, instead of reducing to zero, the energy gaps at nu = 3 and 5 rise rapidly when approaching the coincidence angles. We believe that such an anomaly is related to strong couplings of the nearly degenerate Landau levels.

We theoretically study the combined effect of magnetic and electric fields on the Landau levels and Hall conductivity in AA-stacked bilayer graphene. From the analytic expressions derived, we obtain explicit criterions for determining the zero-energy Landau level and different level crossings in the graphene bilayer. For providing a scheme of experimental verification, we further explore the quantum Hall effect in such a biased bilayer. It is found that the zero-conductance Hall plateau in this system can vanish at certain specific combinations of magnetic and electric fields, accompanying with the occurrence of resonance Hall conductivity steps.
