We study the electronic structure and transport for a quasi-one-dimensional channel constructed via two ferromagnetic (FM) stripes on the surface of a three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator (TI) in parallel (P) or antiparallel (AP) magnetization configuration along the vertical zz-direction. We demonstrate that the confined states which are localized inside the channel always exist due to the magnetic potential confinement. Interestingly, the channel is metallic because of the existence of a topologically protected gapless chiral edge mode in the case of AP configuration. The asymmetric spatial-distribution of both electron probability density and in-plane spin polarization for the confined states implies that in the case of P configuration there exists a chiral state near the channel edge owing to the Hamiltonian inversion symmetry broken in real space, while the distributions in AP case are always symmetry since the inversion symmetry is still kept. Furthermore, the transmission probability and the spatial-dependent distributions of charge and spin along a narrow–wide–narrow channel on the surface with P configuration confinement are also calculated, from which a fully in-plane spin-polarized electron output is achieved. Along with the mathematical analysis we provide an intuitive, topological understanding of these effects.  相似文献

Recently, spin-momentum-locked topological surface states(SSs) have attracted significant attention in spintronics.Owing to spin-momentum locking, the direction of the spin is locked at right angles with respect to the carrier momentum. In this paper, we briefly review the exotic transport properties induced by topological SSs in topological-insulator(TI)nanostructures, which have larger surface-to-volume ratios than those of bulk TI materials. We discuss the electrical spin generation in TIs and its effect on the transport properties. A current flow can generate a pure in-plane spin polarization on the surface, leading to a current-direction-dependent magnetoresistance in spin valve devices based on TI nanostructures.A relative momentum shift of two coupled topological SSs also generates net spin polarization and induces an in-plane anisotropic negative magnetoresistance. Therefore, the spin-momentum locking can enable the broad tuning of the spin transport properties of topological devices for spintronic applications.  相似文献

We study the electronic structure and spin polarization of the surface states of a three-dimensional topological insulator thin film modulated by an electrical potential well. By routinely solving the low-energy surface Dirac equation for the system, we demonstrate that confined surface states exist, in which the electron density is almost localized inside the well and exponentially decayed outside in real space, and that their subband dispersions are quasilinear with respect to the propagating wavevector. Interestingly, the top and bottom surface confined states with the same density distribution have opposite spin polarizations due to the hybridization between the two surfaces. Along with the mathematical analysis, we provide an intuitive, topological understanding of the effect.  相似文献

We investigate numerically the spin polarization of the current in the presence of Rashba spin–orbit interaction (RSOI) in a 3-terminal conductor. We use equation-of-motion method to simulate the time evolution of the wave packet and focus on single-channel transport. A T-shaped conductor with uniform RSOI proposed by Kiselev and Kim and a Y-shaped conductor with nonuniform RSOI are considered. In the T-shaped conductor, the strength of RSOI is assumed to be uniform. We have found that the spin polarization becomes nearly 100% with little loss of conductance for sufficiently strong spin–orbit coupling. This is due to the spin-dependent group velocity of electrons at the junction which causes the spin separation. In the Y-shaped conductor, the strength of RSOI is modulated perpendicular to the charge current. A spatial gradient of effective magnetic field due to the nonuniform RSOI causes the Stern–Gerlach type spin separation. The direction of the polarization is perpendicular to the current and parallel to the spatial gradient. Again almost 100% spin polarization can be realized by this spin separation.  相似文献

In the framework of an effective functional approach based on the k · p method, we study the combined effect of an interface potential and a thickness of a three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator (TI) thin film on the spin Hall conductivity in layered heterostructures comprising TI and normal insulator (NI) materials. We derive an effective two-dimensional (2D) Hamiltonian of a 3D TI thin film sandwiched between two NI slabs and define the applicability limits of approximations used. The energy gap and mass dispersion in the 2D Hamiltonian, originated from the hybridization between TI/NI interfacial bound electron states at the opposite boundaries of a TI film, are demonstrated to change sign with the TI film thickness and the interface potential strength. Finally, we argue that the spin Hall conductivity can efficiently be tuned varying the interface potential characteristics and TI film thickness.  相似文献

We study theoretically helical edge states of 2D and 3D topological insulators (TI) tunnel-coupled to metal leads and show that their transport properties are strongly affected by contacts as the latter play a role of a heat bath and induce damping and relaxation of electrons in the helical states of TI. A simple structure that produces a pure spin current in the external circuit is proposed. The current and spin current delivered to the external circuit depend on relation between characteristic lengths: damping length due to tunneling, contact length and, in case of 3D TI, mean free path and spin relaxation length caused by momentum scattering. If the damping length due to tunneling is the smallest one, then the electric and spin currents are proportional to the conductance quantum in 2D TI, and to the conductance quantum multiplied by the ratio of the contact width to the Fermi wavelength in 3D TI.  相似文献

We investigate the low-energy electronic structure of a Weyl semimetal quantum dot(QD) with a simple model Hamiltonian with only two Weyl points. Distinguished from the semiconductor and topological insulator QDs, there exist both surface and bulk states near the Fermi level in Weyl semimetal QDs. The surface state, distributed near the side surface of the QD, contributes a circular persistent current, an orbital magnetic moment, and a chiral spin polarization with spin-current locking. There are always surface states even for a strong magnetic field, even though a given surface state gradually evolves into a Landau level with increasing magnetic field. It indicates that these unique properties can be tuned via the QD size. In addition, we show the correspondence to the electronic structures of a three-dimensional Weyl semimetal, such as Weyl point and Fermi arc. Because a QD has the largest surface-to-volume ratio, it provides a new platform to verify Weyl semimetal by separating and detecting the signals of surface states. Besides, the study of Weyl QDs is also necessary for potential applications in nanoelectronics.  相似文献

Signature effects observed in rotational bands are a consequence of an inherent D2-symmetry. This symmetry is naturally broken by the mean field cranking approximation when a tilted (non-principal) axis orientation of the nuclear spin becomes stable. The possible tunneling forth and back between the two symmetry-related minima in the double-humped potential-energy surface appears as a typical bifurcation of the rotational band. We describe this many-body process in which all nucleons participate by diagonalizing the nuclear Hamiltonian within a selected set of tilted and non-tilted cranking quasiparticle states. This microscopic approach is able to restore the broken D2 symmetry and reproduce the quantum fluctuations between symmetry-related HFB states which emerge as splitting of the band energies and in parallel staggering in intraband M1 transitions.  相似文献

We study the electronic structure and transport for Dirac electron on the surface of a three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator attached to an electromagnetic superlattice. It is found that, by means of the transfer-matrix method, the number of electronic tunneling channels for magnetic barriers in antiparallel alignment is larger than that in parallel alignment, which stems to the energy band structures. Interestingly, a remarkable semiconducting transport behavior appears in this system with a strong magnetic barrier due to low energy band nearly paralleling to the Fermi level. Consequently, there is only small incident angle transport in the higher energy region when the system is modulated mainly by the higher electric barriers. We further find that the spatial distribution of the spin polarization oscillates periodically in the incoming region, but it is almost in-plane with a fixed direction in the transmitting region. The results may provide a further understanding of the nature of 3D TI surface states, and may be useful in the design of topological insulator-based electronic devices such as collimating electron beam.  相似文献

We show that, when a three-dimensional (3D) narrow-gap semiconductor with inverted band gap (“topological insulator,” TI) is attached to a 3D wide-gap semiconductor with non-inverted band gap (“normal insulator,” NI), two types of bound electron states having different spatial distributions and spin textures arise at the TI/NI interface. Namely, the gapless (“topological”) bound state can be accompanied by the emergence of the gapped (“ordinary”) bound state. We describe these states in the framework of the envelope function method using a variational approach for the energy functional; their existence hinges on the ambivalent character of the constraint for the envelope functions that correspond to the “open” or “natural” boundary conditions at the interface. The properties of the ordinary state strongly depend on the effective interface potential, while the topological state is insensitive to the interface potential variation.  相似文献

We investigate the spin states of a 2D film exhibiting easy-axis anisotropy and a strong single-ion inclined anisotropy whose axis forms a certain angle with the normal to the film surface. Such a system may have an angular ferromagnetic phase, a spatially inhomogeneous state, and a quadrupole phase, whose realization depends substantially on the inclined anisotropy and the orientation of the wavevector in the film plane.  相似文献

The spin-resolved edge states transport in a normal/ferromagnetic/normal topological insulator (TI) junction is investigated numerically. It is shown that the transport properties of the hybrid junction strongly depend on the interface shape. For the junction with two sharp interfaces, a nonzero spin conductance can be generated besides the spin-split energy windows. Moreover, the axial symmetries of the in-plane spin conductance amplitude are broken. The underlying physics is attributed to the sharp-interface-induced quantum interference effect. However, for the hybrid junction with two smooth interfaces, a non-zero spin conductance can only be achieved in the spin-split energy windows. Further, the axial symmetries of the in-plane spin conductance amplitude recover. These findings may not only benefit to further apprehend the spin-dependent edge states transport in the hybrid TI junctions but also provide some theoretical bases to the application of the topological spintronics devices.  相似文献

Using the continual model of a semi-infinite three dimensional (3D) topological insulator (TI) we study the effect of the surface potential (SP) on the formation of helical topological states near the surface. The results reveal that spatial profile and spectrum of these states strongly depend on the SP type and strength. We pay special attention to the 3D TI substrate/non-magnetic insulating overlayer system to illustrate the principles of the topological near-surface states engineering.  相似文献

We study the influence of the non-diagnonal terms in an easy-plane Heisenberg ferromagnet on the cross-section for inelastic neutron scattering from single spin-wave states. We show that these terms modify the wavevector dependence of the cross-section for unpolarized neutrons, and the created polarization. An appropriate experiment on CsNiF3, for example, should be a good test of these predictions, and would eventually clarify some uncertainties about the appropriate Boson Hamiltonian for an easy-plane ferromagnet.  相似文献

In a recent paper, Gohler et al. [1] report that a high efficiency electron spin filter can be constructed from an adsorbed monolayer of double-stranded DNA (dsDNA). Understanding the mechanisms responsible for spin filtering under these conditions has proven to be a challenge, as classical analysis fails to account for the high degree of polarization observed. In this paper we show that these observations can be understood since conduction electrons in the DNA molecule are characterized by specific helical states having a magnetic moment opposite to the direction of the electron wavevector. These helical states are fundamental to the quantum-mechanical properties of periodic structures with helical symmetry. Free electrons passing through the DNA monolayer interact with these helical states, but the strength of this interaction depends on the relative orientation of the electron spin and the magnetic moment associated with the possible helical states. One of these configurations leads to a negligible interaction resulting in high spin polarization in the transmitted electron beam. The overall effect is that the free electron flux component with a magnetic moment in an opposite direction to the magnetic moment of the helical states can pass through the dsDNA monolayer without absorption, while the other spin component is highly absorbed by dsDNA. This is consistent with the finding that a monolayer of single-stranded DNA does not exhibit similar spin filtering properties.  相似文献

Weyl semimetal(WSM) is expected to be an ideal spintronic material owing to its spin currents carried by the bulk and surface states with spin-momentum locking. The generation of a sizable photocurrent is predicted in non-centrosymmetric WSM arising from the broken inversion symmetry and the linear energy dispersion that is unique to Weyl systems. In our recent measurements, the circular photogalvanic effect(CPGE) is discovered in the TaAs WSM. The CPGE voltage is proportional to the helicity of the incident light, reversing direction if the radiation helicity changes handedness, a periodical oscillation therefore appears following the alteration of light polarization. We herein attribute the CPGE to the asymmetric optical excitation of the Weyl cone, which could result in an asymmetric distribution of photoexcited carriers in momentum space according to an optical spin-related selection rule.  相似文献

A carbon nanotube (CNT)/zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) junctions has been proposed and investigated by first-principles calculations. The results show that large spin polarization of currents would be achieved when only one edge of ZGNR is coupled to the other lead. By virtue of spatial separation of edge state in two spin channel, one of those channels is opened at certain energy range and gives rise to spin-polarized currents under a low bias. This feature is stable whenever the ZGNR lead is under the antiferromagnetic ground states or is under the ferromagnetic states. Our findings indicate that this approach is simple and efficient for spintronics design.  相似文献

Nuclear orientation via electron spin locking (NOVEL) is a technique to orient nuclear spins embedded in a solid. Like other methods of dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) it employs a small amount of unpaired electron spins and uses a microwave field to transfer the polarization of these unpaired electron spins to the nuclear spins. Traditional DNP uses CW microwave fields, but NOVEL uses pulsed electron spin resonance (ESR) techniques: a 90 degree pulse–90 degree phase shift–locking pulse sequence is applied and during the locking pulse the polarization transfer is assured by satisfying the Hartmann–Hahn condition. The transfer is coherent and similar to coherence transfer between nuclear spins. However, NOVEL requires an extension of the existing theory to many, inequivalent nuclear spins and to arbitrary, i.e. high electron and nuclear spin polarization. In this paper both extensions are presented. The theory is applied to the system naphthalene doped with pentacene, where the proton spins are polarized using the photo-excited triplet states of the pentacene molecules and found to show excellent agreement with the experimentally observed evolution of the polarization transfer during the locking pulse.  相似文献

We theoretically investigate the spin-polarized transport properties of the T-shaped double quantum dots coupled to two ferromagnetic leads by the Anderson Hamiltonian. The Hamiltonian is solved by means of the slave-boson mean-field theory. We calculate the density of states and the liner conductance in this system with both parallel and antiparallel lead-polarization alignments, and our results show that the transport properties of this system depend on both the tunnelling strength between the two dots and the spin-polarized strength p. This system is a possible candidate for spin valve transistors in the spintronics.  相似文献

A method for calculating the spin polarization of photoelectrons excited by circularly polarized light in solids is proposed. The matrix elements of the electron-photon interaction Hamiltonian are obtained with the relativistic augmented-plane-wave method by Loucks. The degree of the spin polarization can be calculated using these matrix elements which represent optical transitions taking into account the spin states.  相似文献
