A previous paper [Nave & Hill (2005). J. Synchrotron Rad. 12 , 299–303] examined the possibility of reduced radiation damage for small crystals (10 µm and below in size) under conditions where the photoelectrons could escape from the sample. The conclusion of this paper was that higher‐energy radiation (e.g. 40 keV) could offer an advantage as the photoelectron path length was greater and less energy would be deposited in the crystal. This paper refines these calculations further by including the effects of energy deposited owing to Compton scattering and the energy difference between the incident photon and the emitted photoelectron. An estimate is given for the optimum wavelength for collecting data from a protein crystal of a given size and composition. Another way of reducing radiation damage from a protein crystal is to collect data with a very short pulsed X‐ray source where a single image can be obtained before subsequent radiation damage occurs. A comparison of this approach compared with the use of shorter wavelengths is made.  相似文献

A multiple‐analyser‐crystal spectrometer for non‐resonant inelastic X‐ray scattering spectroscopy installed at beamline ID16 of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility is presented. Nine analyser crystals with bending radii R = 1 m measure spectra for five different momentum transfer values simultaneously. Using a two‐dimensional detector, the spectra given by all analysers can be treated individually. The spectrometer is based on a Rowland circle design with fixed Bragg angles of about 88°. The energy resolution can be chosen between 30–2000 meV with typical incident‐photon energies of 6–13 keV. The spectrometer is optimized for studies of valence and core electron excitations resolving both energy and momentum transfer.  相似文献

Blueprint XAS is a new Matlab‐based program developed to fit and analyse X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) data, most specifically in the near‐edge region of the spectrum. The program is based on a methodology that introduces a novel background model into the complete fit model and that is capable of generating any number of independent fits with minimal introduction of user bias [Delgado‐Jaime & Kennepohl (2010), J. Synchrotron Rad. 17 , 119–128]. The functions and settings on the five panels of its graphical user interface are designed to suit the needs of near‐edge XAS data analyzers. A batch function allows for the setting of multiple jobs to be run with Matlab in the background. A unique statistics panel allows the user to analyse a family of independent fits, to evaluate fit models and to draw statistically supported conclusions. The version introduced here (v0.2) is currently a toolbox for Matlab. Future stand‐alone versions of the program will also incorporate several other new features to create a full package of tools for XAS data processing.  相似文献

A quantitative analysis of the crucial characteristics of currently used and promising materials for X‐ray refractive optics is performed in the extended energy range 8–100 keV. According to the examined parameters, beryllium is the material of choice for X‐ray compound refractive lenses (CRLs) in the energy range 8–25 keV. At higher energies the use of CRLs made of diamond and the cubic phase of boron nitride (c‐BN) is beneficial. It was demonstrated that the presence of the elements of the fourth (or higher) period has a fatal effect on the functional X‐ray properties even if low‐Z elements dominate in the compound, like in YB66. Macroscopic properties are discussed: much higher melting points and thermal conductivities of C and c‐BN enable them to be used at the new generation of synchrotron radiation sources and X‐ray free‐electron lasers. The role of crystal and internal structure is discussed: materials with high density are preferable for refractive applications while less dense phases are suitable for X‐ray windows. Single‐crystal or amorphous glass‐like materials based on Li, Be, B or C that are free of diffuse scattering from grain boundaries, voids and inclusions are the best candidates for applications of highly coherent X‐ray beams.  相似文献

A new data analysis methodology for X‐ray absorption near‐edge spectroscopy (XANES) is introduced and tested using several examples. The methodology has been implemented within the context of a new Matlab‐based program discussed in a companion related article [Delgado‐Jaime et al. (2010), J. Synchrotron Rad. 17 , 132–137]. The approach makes use of a Monte Carlo search method to seek appropriate starting points for a fit model, allowing for the generation of a large number of independent fits with minimal user‐induced bias. The applicability of this methodology is tested using various data sets on the Cl K‐edge XAS data for tetragonal CuCl42?, a common reference compound used for calibration and covalency estimation in M—Cl bonds. A new background model function that effectively blends together background profiles with spectral features is an important component of the discussed methodology. The development of a robust evaluation function to fit multiple‐edge data is discussed and the implications regarding standard approaches to data analysis are discussed and explored within these examples.  相似文献

The detection of chemical mapping with a spatial resolution of 30 nm has been achieved with a scanning transmission X‐ray microscope at the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility. For each specimen, two absorption images were scanned separately with energies E1 and E2: E1 was focused on the absorption edge of the chosen element and E2 was focused below the edge. A K‐edge division method is proposed and applied to obtain the element mapping. Compared with the frequently used K‐edge subtraction method, this ratio‐contrast method is shown to be more accurate and sensitive in identifying the elements of interest, where the definition of the contrast threshold is simple and clear in physics. Several examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the method.  相似文献

A new multi‐purpose operando electrochemical cell was designed, constructed and tested on the Swiss–Norwegian Beamlines BM01 and BM31 at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. Single‐crystal sapphire X‐ray windows provide a good signal‐to‐noise ratio, excellent electrochemical contact because of the constant pressure between the electrodes, and perfect electrochemical stability at high potentials due to the inert and non‐conductive nature of sapphire. Examination of the phase transformations in the Li1–xFe0.5Mn0.5PO4 positive electrode (cathode) material at C/2 and 10C charge and discharge rates, and a study of the valence state of the Ni cations in the Li1–xNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode material for Li‐ion batteries, revealed the applicability of this novel cell design to diffraction and spectroscopic investigations of high‐power/high‐voltage electrodes for metal‐ion batteries.  相似文献

The fractional Fourier transform (FrFT) is introduced as a tool for numerical simulations of X‐ray wavefront propagation. By removing the strict sampling requirements encountered in typical Fourier optics, simulations using the FrFT can be carried out with much decreased detail, allowing, for example, on‐line simulation during experiments. Moreover, the additive index property of the FrFT allows the propagation through multiple optical components to be simulated in a single step, which is particularly useful for compound refractive lenses (CRLs). It is shown that it is possible to model the attenuation from the entire CRL using one or two effective apertures without loss of accuracy, greatly accelerating simulations involving CRLs. To demonstrate the applicability and accuracy of the FrFT, the imaging resolution of a CRL‐based imaging system is estimated, and the FrFT approach is shown to be significantly more precise than comparable approaches using geometrical optics. Secondly, it is shown that extensive FrFT simulations of complex systems involving coherence and/or non‐monochromatic sources can be carried out in minutes. Specifically, the chromatic aberrations as a function of source bandwidth are estimated, and it is found that the geometric optics greatly overestimates the aberration for energy bandwidths of around 1%.  相似文献

A spectrometer for resonant inelastic X‐ray scattering (RIXS) is proposed where imaging and dispersion actions in two orthogonal planes are combined to deliver a full two‐dimensional map of RIXS intensity in one shot with parallel detection at incoming hvin and outgoing hvout photon energies. Preliminary ray‐tracing simulations with a typical undulator beamline demonstrate a resolving power well above 11000 with both hvin and hvout near 930 eV, with a vast potential for improvement. Combining this instrument – nicknamed hv2 spectrometer – with an X‐ray free‐electron laser source simplifies its technical implementation and enables efficient time‐resolved RIXS experiments.  相似文献

Synchrotron X‐ray tomography (SXRT) has been applied to the study of defects within three‐dimensional printed titanium parts. These parts were made using the Arcam EBM® (electron beam melting) process which uses powdered titanium alloy, Ti64 (Ti alloy with approximately 6%Al and 4%V) as the feed and an electron beam for the sintering/welding. The experiment was conducted on the Imaging and Medical Beamline of the Australian Synchrotron. The samples represent a selection of complex shapes with a variety of internal morphologies. Inspection via SXRT has revealed a number of defects which may not otherwise have been seen. The location and nature of such defects combined with detailed knowledge of the process conditions can contribute to understanding the interplay between design and manufacturing strategy. This fundamental understanding may subsequently be incorporated into process modelling, prediction of properties and the development of robust methodologies for the production of defect‐free parts.  相似文献

An X‐ray grating interferometer was installed at the BL13W beamline of Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF) for biomedical imaging applications. Compared with imaging results from conventional absorption‐based micro‐computed tomography, this set‐up has shown much better soft tissue imaging capability. In particular, using the set‐up, the carotid artery and the carotid vein in a formalin‐fixed mouse can be visualized in situ without contrast agents, paving the way for future applications in cancer angiography studies. The overall results have demonstrated the broad prospects of the existing set‐up for biomedical imaging applications at SSRF.  相似文献

The SUT‐NANOTEC‐SLRI beamline was constructed in 2012 as the flagship of the SUT‐NANOTEC‐SLRI Joint Research Facility for Synchrotron Utilization, co‐established by Suranaree University of Technology (SUT), National Nanotechnology Center (NANOTEC) and Synchrotron Light Research Institute (SLRI). It is an intermediate‐energy X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) beamline at SLRI. The beamline delivers an unfocused monochromatic X‐ray beam of tunable photon energy (1.25–10 keV). The maximum normal incident beam size is 13 mm (width) × 1 mm (height) with a photon flux of 3 × 108 to 2 × 1010 photons s?1 (100 mA)?1 varying across photon energies. Details of the beamline and XAS instrumentation are described. To demonstrate the beamline performance, K‐edge XANES spectra of MgO, Al2O3, S8, FeS, FeSO4, Cu, Cu2O and CuO, and EXAFS spectra of Cu and CuO are presented.  相似文献

The characterization of Mg–Co–Zr tri‐layer stacks using X‐ray fluorescence induced by X‐ray standing waves, in both the grazing‐incidence (GI) and the grazing‐exit (GE) modes, is presented. The introduction of a slit in the direction of the detector improves the angular resolution by a factor of two and significantly improves the sensitivity of the technique for the chemical characterization of the buried interfaces. By observing the intensity variations of the Mg Kα and Co Lα characteristic emissions as a function of the incident (GI mode) or detection (GE mode) angle, it is shown that the interfaces of the Si/[Mg/Co/Zr]×30 multilayer are abrupt, whereas in the Si/[Mg/Zr/Co]×30 multilayer a strong intermixing occurs at the Co‐on‐Zr interfaces. An explanation of this opposite behavior of the Co‐on‐Zr and Zr‐on‐Co interfaces is given by the calculation of the mixing enthalpies of the Co–Mg, Co–Zr and Mg–Zr systems, which shows that the Co–Zr system presents a negative value and the other two systems present positive values. Together with the difference of the surface free energies of Zr and Co, this leads to the Mg/Zr/Co system being considered as a Mg/CoxZry bi‐layer stack, with x/y estimated around 3.5.  相似文献

A new system of slits called `spiderweb slits' have been developed for depth‐resolved powder or polycrystalline X‐ray diffraction measurements. The slits act on diffracted X‐rays to select a particular gauge volume of sample, while absorbing diffracted X‐rays from outside of this volume. Although the slit geometry is to some extent similar to that of previously developed conical slits or spiral slits, this new design has advantages over the previous ones in use for complex heterogeneous materials and in situ and operando diffraction measurements. For example, the slits can measure a majority of any diffraction cone for any polycrystalline material, over a continuous range of diffraction angles, and work for X‐ray energies of tens to hundreds of kiloelectronvolts. The design is generated and optimized using ray‐tracing simulations, and fabricated through laser micromachining. The first prototype was successfully tested at the X17A beamline at the National Synchrotron Light Source, and shows similar performance to simulations, demonstrating gauge volume selection for standard powders, for all diffraction peaks over angles of 2–10°. A similar, but improved, design will be implemented at the X‐ray Powder Diffraction beamline at the National Synchrotron Light Source II.  相似文献

The characteristics of a new ferroelectric measurement system at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility are presented. The electric‐field‐induced phase transitions of Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3xPbTiO3 are determined viain situ measurements of electric polarization within the synchrotron diffraction beamline. Real‐time data collection methods on single‐crystal samples are employed as a function of frequency to determine the microstructural origin of piezoelectric effects within these materials, probing the dynamic ferroelectric response.  相似文献

The implementation of a laser pump/X‐ray probe scheme for performing picosecond‐resolution X‐ray diffraction at the 1W2B wiggler beamline at Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility is reported. With the hybrid fill pattern in top‐up mode, a pixel array X‐ray detector was optimized to gate out the signal from the singlet bunch with interval 85 ns from the bunch train. The singlet pulse intensity is ~2.5 × 106 photons pulse?1 at 10 keV. The laser pulse is synchronized to this singlet bunch at a 1 kHz repetition rate. A polycapillary X‐ray lens was used for secondary focusing to obtain a 72 µm (FWHM) X‐ray spot. Transient photo‐induced strain in BiFeO3 film was observed at a ~150 ps time resolution for demonstration.  相似文献

X‐ray absorption and scattering spectroscopies involving the 3d transition‐metal K‐ and L‐edges have a long history in studying inorganic and bioinorganic molecules. However, there have been very few studies using the M‐edges, which are below 100 eV. Synchrotron‐based X‐ray sources can have higher energy resolution at M‐edges. M‐edge X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic X‐ray scattering (RIXS) could therefore provide complementary information to K‐ and L‐edge spectroscopies. In this study, M2,3‐edge XAS on several Co, Ni and Cu complexes are measured and their spectral information, such as chemical shifts and covalency effects, are analyzed and discussed. In addition, M2,3‐edge RIXS on NiO, NiF2 and two other covalent complexes have been performed and different dd transition patterns have been observed. Although still preliminary, this work on 3d metal complexes demonstrates the potential to use M‐edge XAS and RIXS on more complicated 3d metal complexes in the future. The potential for using high‐sensitivity and high‐resolution superconducting tunnel junction X‐ray detectors below 100 eV is also illustrated and discussed.  相似文献

A capillary discharge pumped soft x‐ray laser operating at 46.9 nm on the 3p–3s transition of the Ne‐like Ar has been realized by pumping the active medium with a relatively slow current pulse (dI/dt ≈ 6 · 1011 A/s). In order to study the role of the ablation in the production of the laser effect, the intensity of the amplified 46.9 nm line has been investigated using the same pumping current pulses in the plastic (polyacetal) and ceramic (Al2O3). We showed that the ablation of the capillary walls is unfavorable both for the compression and stability of the plasma and consequently for the soft x‐ray laser production. The amplification and lasing effects are observed only in the ceramic channel. The measurements of the line intensity at 46.9 nm showed the lasing with a gain‐length product of ≈ 9, a laser pulse energy of ≈ 5 μJ, a pulse duration of 1.3 ns and a beam divergence of ≈ 3.5 mrad. In addition, effect of the scaling of the time of lasing with the initial plasma diameter was demonstrated experimentally and compared with a one‐dimensional MHD model.  相似文献

The coupling and propagation of electromagnetic waves through planar X‐ray waveguides (WG) with vacuum gap and Si claddings are analyzed in detail, starting from the source and ending at the detector. The general case of linearly tapered WGs (i.e. with the entrance aperture different from the exit one) is considered. Different kinds of sources, i.e. synchrotron radiation and laboratory desk‐top sources, have been considered, with the former providing a fully coherent incoming beam and the latter partially coherent beams. It is demonstrated that useful information about the parameters of the WG can be derived, comparing experimental results with computer simulation based on analytical solutions of the Helmholtz equation which take into account the amplitude and phase matching between the standing waves created in front of the WG, and the resonance modes propagating into the WG.  相似文献
