A multiwavelength Brillouin/erbium fibre laser (BEFL) which operates in the long wavelength (L-band) region is demonstrated for potential applications in an L-band wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) communication system. The laser configuration consists of a long erbium-doped fibre to enable L-band amplification where two 3-dB couplers take a portion of the generated BEFL signal and re-inject it into the single mode fibre to seed a cascaded BEFL line in the same direction as the first BEFL line. A stable and strong laser comb of up to five lines with 10-GHz spacing has been obtained with a Brillouin pump (BP) of 9.2 mW and a 980 nm pump of 92 mW. The BEFL has shown a broad tuning range with a tuning characteristic for line #1 which is flat over a range greater than 9.9 nm.  相似文献

Optimization of Brillouin pump (BP) wavelength location on tunable multiwavelength Brillouin-erbium fiber laser (BEFL) with BP pre-amplified technique is experimentally investigated. The tunable multiwavelength BEFL is achieved by utilization a tunable band-pass filter in a laser cavity. The optimum BP power and BP wavelength location within the filter bandwidth is determined in order to obtain the maximum stable output channels. Optimum distance of launching the BP wavelength is found at 0.80 nm shorter from the center wavelength of the filter bandwidth. 15 stable output channels are achieved from the tunable fiber laser system within the optimum range of BP power which is found to be between 5.2 to 5.7 dBm.  相似文献

The effect of output coupler reflectivity (or output coupling ratio) on the performance of a linear cavity Brillouin/erbium fiber laser (BEFL) is demonstrated. The operating wavelength, output laser power and number of channels vary with changes in the coupling ratio in the linear cavity system. The optimum BEFL operation is obtained with an output coupling of 40%, i.e., 60% of the laser power is allowed to oscillate in the cavity. A stable laser comb consisting of up to 40 channels with line spacings of approximately 0.09 nm are obtained at the Brillouin pump and 980 nm pump with powers of 2.5 mW and 100 mW, respectively. The linear cavity BEFL has the potential to be used in inexpensive wavelength division multiplexing system.   相似文献

The operation of the self-excited Brillouin/erbium fiber laser (BEFL) is experimentally demonstrated. It uses a forward pumped erbium-doped fiber (EDF) as a gain medium to generate a Brillouin-pump (BP) and amplify the Stokes frequency signals generated in a single-mode fiber (SMF). The operating wavelength varies with changes of coupling ratio of the looping arm. The optimum BEFL operation is obtained with a center wavelength at 1567.5 nm by looping back 20% of BEFL output into the other end of the SMF. The BEFL output power and number of lines increases gradually as 980-nm pump power increases. At the maximum 980-nm pump power of 118 mW, a stable and strong BEFL comb of up to 16 lines with 11 GHz spacing is demonstrated. The self-excited BEFL has the potential to be used in the future dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) communication system.  相似文献

Laser sources with unique properties can be produced using a combination of nonlinear Brillouin gain in single-mode optical fibre (SMOF) and gain in erbium-doped fibre (EDF). Narrow bandwidth nonlinear gain from stimulated Brillouin scattering in SMOF determines the wavelength of operation, and gain in EDF allows efficient operation and large power extraction. Various cascading schemes based on the Brillouin/erbium fibre laser (BEFL) as well as distinctive multi-wavelength versions of the BEFL were proposed, being able to produce 10GHz combs of over 30 lines at 1550 nm. These multi-wavelength sources may be of use in future dense wavelength-division multiplexing systems. We explore fundamental aspects of BEFLs configured to generate multiple wavelengths with particular focus on the effects of the Brillouin and EDF pumps on the number of lines and the relationship between the intensities of the individual lines in the comb.  相似文献

Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) characteristics in a 49 cm long highly doped Bismuth-based Erbium doped fiber (Bi-EDF) is investigated in the ring and linear cavity configurations. At Brillouin pump (BP) power of 6 dBm, the Brillouin laser peak power of the optimized ring Brillouin Erbium fiber laser (BEFL) is obtained at 23 dB higher than the peak power of the conventional linear cavity at an up shifted wavelength of 0.08 nm. This Bi-EDF ring cavity operates at nearly 1563 nm wavelength region, which is up-shifted by 0.08 nm from the Brillouin pump wavelength with the side mode suppression ratios (SMSR) of 29 and 23 dB in the forward and backward directions, respectively.  相似文献

The generation of a multiple wavelength source using a bismuth-based erbium-doped fiber (Bi-EDF) in a linear cavity configuration is demonstrated. The configuration uses a pair of optical circulators at the input and output ends of the cavity to form a resonator for multi-wavelength generation in conjunction with optical couplers to inject the Brillouin pump (BP) and to tap the output at the two ends. The Brillouin erbium fiber laser (BEFL) comb with a 2.15 m of Bi-EDF has a wavelength spacing of 0.09 nm and operates in long-wavelength (L-) band region. A stable output laser comb of 50 lines is obtained at a BP of 1568.2 nm and 5 dBm and two 1480 nm pumps at 120 mW. The injected BP wavelength and power as well as the 1480 nm pump powers have a great effect on the number of lines and output power of the BEFL. This configuration is compact due to the use of the significantly shorter Bi-EDF as the linear gain medium, and can be made more compact by replacing the single-mode fiber with highly non-linear fibers such as holey fibers.  相似文献

This paper proposes a novel fibre structure aiming at distributed temperature and strain sensing. Utilizing Al2O3 and GeO2 as dopants to form a w-shaped acoustic waveguide, it realizes modal coupling between longitudinal acoustic modes of its inner and outer core layers, leading to a dual-peak or multi-peak Brillouin gain spectrum. The relationship between the acoustic mode coupling properties and the fibre materials, doping concentrations and structural parameters are investigated, showing that the positions of mode coupling points in acoustic dispersion curves and the coupling intensities can be designed flexibly. A specific fibre design for the discriminative sensing of temperature and strain under a pump wavelength of 1.55 μm is given. The responses of its Brillouin gain properties on temperature and strain are analysed theoretically, demonstrating its potential for distributed fibre Brillouin sensing.  相似文献

Multi-wavelength Brillouin fiber laser using dual-cavity configuration   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A simple technique for achieving multi-wavelength tunable multi-wavelength Brillouin fiber laser (BFL) based on dual-pass configuration is demonstrated. The BFL uses a piece of 10 km long non-zero dispersion shifted fiber (NZ-DSF) as a Brillouin gain medium to obtain odd-order Brillouin Stokes waves as an output with the line spacing of 0.16 nm (20 GHz) between each two consecutive waves by employing even-order Brillouin Stokes to improve output performance of the laser. With a BP of 15.3 dBm, at least 15 odd-order Brillouin Stokes and anti-Stokes lines are generated. The laser is room temperature stable, tunable over 50 nm wavelength range and has an optical signal to noise ratio of more than 30 dB at 1560 nm region. This Brillouin fiber laser can operate at any wavelength depending on the Brillouin pump (BP) wavelength used.  相似文献

A novel technique of producing multiwavelength laser source was described utilising a linear cavity of hybrid Brillouin/Erbium fibre laser (BEFL). Twenty-two stable output lasers with 10.88 GHz line spacing were obtained from this architecture at 1557.5 nm that was at the peak of Erbium gain. The requirement of an internal feedback that is commonly used in a ring configuration to generate cascaded Brillouin Stokes for multiple wavelengths operation was achieved by the proposed linear cavity design.  相似文献

We have experimentally demonstrated a tunable multi-wavelength Brillouin–erbium fiber laser with over 40 GHz spacing utilizing two cascaded double Brillouin-frequency-spacing cavities. In this laser configuration, two segments of 25 km-long single-mode fibers are used as Brillouin gain medium in each ring cavity, and a segment of 8 m-long erbium-doped fiber with 980 nm pump is employed to amplify Brillouin pump (BP). At BP wavelength of 1550 nm, BP power of 8.3 dBm (6.8 mW) and the maximum 980 nm pump power of 27.78 dBm (600 mW), seven output channels with fourfold Brillouin-frequency spacing, and the tuning range of 15 nm from 1545 to 1560 nm are achieved. The proposed multi-wavelength Brillouin–erbium fiber laser has wide applications, such as in microwave signal generation and optical communications.  相似文献

A multi-wavelength Brillouin-erbium ring-cavity fiber laser utilizing 2-m erbium doped fiber (EDF) and 70-m high nonlinear photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is proposed and demonstrated. The output characteristics and also the impacts of pump and Brillouin pump (BP) on the output spectra are investigated in detail. The output number and wavelength location of Brillouin lines are tunable by adjusting the power of 1465 nm pump and BP, and a 5-channel output within 11 nm (1551–1562 nm) tuning range is achieved by choosing appropriate pump power.  相似文献

A simple technique for achieving a stable, room temperature and multi-wavelength lasing with narrow linewidth is demonstrated using Brillouin ber laser (BFL) with a 100-m-long photonic crystal ber (PCF) in conjunction with a dual-pass configuration. A broadband ber Bragg grating (FBG) operating in the C-band region is incorporated at the end side of the setup to allow a dual-pass operation. The proposed BFL can operate at any wavelength depending on the Brillouin pump wavelength and the FBG’s reflection region used. With a Brillouin pump (BP) of 15.7 dBm, approximately 7 Stokes and 4 anti-Stokes lines are obtained with a line spacing of 0.08 nm.  相似文献

A multi-wavelength Brillouin/erbium-doped fiber laser (BEFL) which operates in 1594 nm region is demonstrated using a 215 cm long Bismuth-based EDF and SMF. Two optical circulators were used at the output ends of the system to form a linear cavity to produce a cascaded Brillouin Stokes and anti-Stokes. A stable output laser comb of more than 20 lines was obtained with a spacing of approximately 0.089 nm at a Brillouin pump power of 4 dBm and two 1,480-nm pumps at powers of 100 mW. The number of lines is relatively higher compared with the ring cavity BEFL.  相似文献

A chirped fibre Bragg grating according to ITU-T suggested L-band (2nd channel $\lambda _{1}=1570.83$~nm; 80th channel $\lambda _{2}=1603.57$ nm) with more than 1800 ps/nm single channel dispersion compensation is presented in this paper, of which the cladding mode loss, the delay curve ripple and the power fluctuation of the reflected spectrum are less than 0.5 dB, 50 ps and 0.25 dB, respectively. With this new FBG as dispersion compensation device, a $2\times 10$ Gb/s wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) L-band transmission of 600 km based on conventional single mode fibre (G.652 fibre) is performed without forward error correction. The bit error rate (BER) is less than 10$^{ - 12}$ and the power penalties of the 2{nd} and 80{th} channel of L-band are 1.8~dB and 2.0~dB, respectively.  相似文献

We have demonstrated a tunable multiwavelength self-seeded Brillouin-erbium fiber laser (BEFL) without externally Brillouin pumping. In this scheme, the stable multiwavelength comb can be produced within a ∼45-nm wavelength tuning range through adjusting the polarization controllers (PCs) in a high-birefringent Sagnac loop mirror. The generation of ∼200-line Stokes comb has been achieved by adjusting PCs under bidirectional pumping of two laser diodes, which is the largest wavelength number to the best of our knowledge. The effect of 980 nm pump power on the multiwavelength generation was also investigated.  相似文献

A new linear cavity BEFL configuration for increased Stokes-line generation is proposed and demonstrated utilizing a 2 × 2 coupler at the end of the linear cavity. The proposed linear cavity is able to generate up to 33 Stokes lines in the 1590-nm region at a channel spacing of 0.089 nm. The Stokes lines are generated at a BP power of 4 dBm and a 1480-nm pump power of 100 mW. The number of Stokes generated by the proposed BELF is higher compared to conventional BEFL configurations in which the 2 × 2 coupler is placed in the middle of the linear cavity. The number of Stokes lines generated is observed to depend on the 1480-nm pump power as well as the operating wavelength region, which must be as close as possible to the lasing bandwidth of the free-running BEFL. The proposed multiwavelength BEFL is able to operate stably at room temperatures and is also compact due to the use of a 215-cm bismuth-based EDF as the linear gain medium.  相似文献

A configuration for linear cavity Brillouin fiber laser (BFL) generation is demonstrated using a standard single-mode fiber, two optical circulators, a 3 dB coupler, and a 95/5 coupler to allow high efficiency. With a Brillouin pump (BP) power of 13 dBm, the laser peak power is 12.3 dB higher than a conventional linear cavity BFL at an upshifted wavelength of 0.086 nm from the BP wavelength. In addition, it is revealed that the BFL peak power can be higher than the transmitted BP peak power when the BP power exceeds the second Brillouin Stokes threshold power.  相似文献

In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a novel configuration of multiwavelength Brillouin–Raman random fiber laser (MBRRFL) utilizing a half-open cavity. The laser resonator is formed by fiber loop mirror at the Brillouin pump (BP) side and random distributed Rayleigh backscattering in a 10 km dispersion compensating fiber. As a result, we are able to obtain a flat amplitude bandwidth of 16.8 nm from 1,550.0 to 1,566.8 nm built-in 210 uniform Brillouin Stokes lines with 0.08 nm spacing and an average OSNR of 13.5 dB. We also studied the influence of BP power and wavelength on the MBRRFL’s performance. Furthermore, comparing with the open cavity configuration, the discrepancies in power level and linewidth between neighboring channels are overcome by using the half-open cavity.  相似文献

An experiment on gain enhancement in the long wavelength band erbium-doped fiber amplifier (L-band EDFA) is demonstrated using dual forward pumping scheme in double-pass system. Compared to a single-stage single-pass scheme, the small signal gain for 1580 nm signal can be improved by 13.5 dB. However, a noise figure penalty of 2.9 dB was obtained due to the backward C-band ASE from second stage and the already amplified signal from the first pass that extracting energy from the forward C-band ASE. The maximum gain improvement of 13.7 dB was obtained at a signal wavelength of 1588 nm while signal and total pump powers were fixed at -30 dBm and 92 mW, respectively.  相似文献
