We investigate closed surfaces in Euclidean 3-space satisfying certain functional relations κ = F(λ) between the principal curvatures κ, λ. In particular we find analytic closed surfaces of genus zero where F is a quadratic polynomial or F(λ) = cλ2n+1. This generalizes results by H. Hopf on the case where F is linear and the case of ellipsoids of revolution where F(λ) = cλ3.  相似文献

The weight-spectrumSp(w, X) of a spaceX is the set of weights of all infinite closed subspaces ofX. We prove that ifκ>ω is regular andX is compactT 2 withω(X)κ then some λ withκ≤λ≤2 is inSp(ω, X). Under CH this implies that the weight spectrum of a compact space can not omitω 1, and thus solves problem 22 of [M]. Also, it is consistent with 2ω=c being anything it can be that every countable closed setT of cardinals less thanc withω ∈ T satisfiesSp(w, X)=T for some separable compact LOTSX. This shows the independence from ZFC of a conjecture made in [AT]. Research supported by OTKA grant no. 1908.  相似文献

A wide class of reliability theory models or lifetime data can be described as follows. Assume that the lifetime distribution function is F(t, θ)=F0(λ(θ)t), where θ is the parameter characterizing some inner properties of a product and λ(θ) is an unknown increasing function. The paper deals with methods of estimation of λ(θ) from the sample (t i ,θ i ),i = 1, ...,n, for the case of exponentialF 0. We consider various forms of the Conjecture of Chang. Part A constitutes an introduction. Donder and Koepke have shown that if ρ is a cardinal such that ρ ≧ ω1, and (ρ+++↠(ρ+, ρ), then 0+ exists. We obtain the same conclusion in Part B starting from some other forms of the transfer hypothesis. As typical corollaries, we get: Theorem A.Assume that there exists cardinals λ, κ, such that λ ≧ K + ≧ω2 and (λ+, λ)↠(K +,K. Then 0+ exists. Theorem B.Assume that there exists a singularcardinal κ such that(K +,K↠(ω1, ω0. Then 0+ exists. Theorem C.Assume that (λ ++, λ). Then 0+ exists (also ifK=ω 0. Remark. Here, as in the paper of Donder and Koepke, “O+ exists” is a matter of saying that the hypothesis is strictly stronger than “L(μ) exists”. Of course, the same proof could give a few more sharps overL(μ), but the interest is in expecting more cardinals, coming from a larger core model. Theorem D.Assume that (λ ++, λ)↠(K +, K) and thatK≧ω 1. Then 0+ exists. Remark 2. Theorem B is, as is well-known, false if the hypothesis “κ is singular” is removed, even if we assume thatK≧ω 2, or that κ is inaccessible. We shall recall this in due place. Comments. Theorem B and Remark 2 suggest we seek the consistency of the hypothesis of the form:K +, K↠(ωn +1, ωn), for κ singular andn≧0. 0266 0152 V 3 The consistency of several statements of this sort—a prototype of which is (N ω+1,N ω)↠(ω1, ω0) —have been established, starting with an hypothesis slightly stronger than: “there exists a huge cardinal”, but much weaker than: “there exists a 2-huge cardinal”. These results will be published in a joint paper by M. Magidor, S. Shelah, and the author of the present paper.  相似文献

In this paper we consider proper cycles of indefinite integral quadratic forms F = (a, b, c) with discriminant Δ. We prove that the proper cycles of F can be obtained using their consecutive right neighbors R i(F) for i ⩾ 0. We also derive explicit relations in the cycle and proper cycle of F when the length l of the cycle of F is odd, using the transformations τ(F) = (−a, b, −c) and ϰ(F) = (−c, b, −a).  相似文献

LetK be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. ForAK[x, y] let σ(A) = {λ ∈K:A − λ is reducible}. For λ ∈ σ(A) letA − λ = ∏ i=1 n(λ) A iλ k μ whereA iλ are distinct primes. Let ϱλ(A) =n(λ) − 1 and let ρ(A) = Σλɛσ(A)ϱλ(A). The main result is the following: Theorem.If A ∈ K[x, y] is not a composite polynomial, then ρ(A) < degA.  相似文献

For a transitive Lie algebroid A on a connected manifold M and its representation on a vector bundle F, we define a morphism of cohomology groups rk: Hk(A,F) → Hk(Lx,Fx), called the localization map, where Lx is the adjoint algebra at x ∈ M. The main result in this paper is that if M is simply connected, or H (LX,FX) is trivial, then T is injective. This means that the Lie algebroid 1-cohomology is totally determined by the 1-cohomology of its adjoint Lie algebra in the above two cases.  相似文献

In this paper we compute the group H2(SL2(F)), for F an infinite field. In particular, using some techniques from homological algebra developed by Hutchinson [Hutchinson, K: K-Theory 4 (1990), 181–200], we give a new proof of the following theorem obtained by [Su2]: The group H2(SL2, (F)) is the fiber product of λ*:K2(F)→ I2(F)/I3(F) and σ: I2(F) → I2(F)/I3(F) where λ* and σ map onto I2(F)/I3(F). Let G be an outerplanar graph with maximum degree △. Let χ(G^2) and A(G) denote the chromatic number of the square and the L(2, 1)-labelling number of G, respectively. In this paper we prove the following results: (1) χ(G^2) = 7 if △= 6; (2) λ(G) ≤ △ +5 if △ ≥ 4, and ),(G)≤ 7 if △ = 3; and (3) there is an outerplanar graph G with △ = 4 such that )λ(G) = 7. These improve some known results on the distance two labelling of outerplanar graphs.  相似文献

We introduce an extension, indexed by a partially ordered set P and cardinal numbers κ,λ, denoted by (κ,<λ)⇝P, of the classical relation (κ,n,λ)→ρ in infinite combinatorics. By definition, (κ,n,λ)→ρ holds if every map F: [κ] n →[κ]<λ has a ρ-element free set. For example, Kuratowski’s Free Set Theorem states that (κ,n,λ)→n+1 holds iff κλ +n , where λ +n denotes the n-th cardinal successor of an infinite cardinal λ. By using the (κ,<λ)⇝P framework, we present a self-contained proof of the first author’s result that (λ +n ,n,λ)→n+2, for each infinite cardinal λ and each positive integer n, which solves a problem stated in the 1985 monograph of Erdős, Hajnal, Máté, and Rado. Furthermore, by using an order-dimension estimate established in 1971 by Hajnal and Spencer, we prove the relation $(\lambda ^{ + (n - 1)} ,r,\lambda ) \to 2^{\left\lfloor {\tfrac{1} {2}(1 - 2^{ - r} )^{ - n/r} } \right\rfloor } $(\lambda ^{ + (n - 1)} ,r,\lambda ) \to 2^{\left\lfloor {\tfrac{1} {2}(1 - 2^{ - r} )^{ - n/r} } \right\rfloor } , for every infinite cardinal λ and all positive integers n and r with 2≤r<n. For example, (ℵ210,4,ℵ0)→32,768. Other order-dimension estimates yield relations such as (ℵ109,4,ℵ0) → 257 (using an estimate by Füredi and Kahn) and (ℵ7,4,ℵ0)→10 (using an exact estimate by Dushnik).  相似文献

For κ ⩾ 0 and r0 > 0 let ℳ(n, κ, r0) be the set of all connected, compact n-dimensional Riemannian manifolds (Mn, g) with Ricci (M, g) ⩾ −(n−1) κ g and Inj (M) ⩾ r0. We study the relation between the kth eigenvalue λk(M) of the Laplacian associated to (Mn,g), Δ = −div(grad), and the kth eigenvalue λk(X) of a combinatorial Laplacian associated to a discretization X of M. We show that there exist constants c, C > 0 (depending only on n, κ and r0) such that for all M ∈ ℳ(n, κ, r0) and X a discretization of for all k < |X|. Then, we obtain the same kind of result for two compact manifolds M and N ∈ ℳ(n, κ, r0) such that the Gromov–Hausdorff distance between M and N is smaller than some η > 0. We show that there exist constants c, C > 0 depending on η, n, κ and r0 such that for all . Let A be the closed unbounded operator inL p(G) that is associated with an elliptic boundary value problem for a bounded domainG. We prove the existence of a spectral projectionE determined by the set Γ = {λ;θ 1≦argλ≦θ 2} and show thatAE is the infinitesimal generator of an analytic semigroup provided that the following conditions hold: 1<p<∞; the boundary ϖΓ of Γ is contained in the resolvent setp(A) ofA;π/2θ<θ 23π/2 ; and there exists a constantc such that (I)││(λ-A)-1││≦c/│λ│ for λ∈ϖΓ. The following consequence is obtained: Suppose that there exist constantsM andc such that λ∈p(A) and estimate (I) holds provided that |λ|≧M and Re λ=0. Then there exist bounded projectionE andE + such thatA is completely reduced by the direct sum decompositionL p(G)=ELp (G) ⊕E+Lp (G) and each of the operatorsAE and—AE + is the infinitestimal generator of an analytic semigroup.  相似文献

Let f be a nonconstant entire function; let k ≥ 2 be a positive integer; and let a be a nonzero complex number. If f(z) = a→f′(z) = a, and f′(z) = a →f^(k)(z) = a, then either f = Ce^λz + a or f = Ce^λz + a(λ - 1)/)λ, where C and ), are nonzero constants with λ^k-1 = 1. The proof is based on the Wiman-Vlairon theory and the theory of normal families in an essential way.  相似文献

Summary LetC κ(S) be the zonal polynomial of the symmetricm×m matrixS=(sij), corresponding to the partition κ of the non-negative integerk. If ∂/∂S is them×m matrix of differential operators with (i, j)th entry ((1+δij)∂/∂sij)/2, δ being Kronecker's delta, we show that Ck(∂/∂S)Cλ(S)=k!δλkCk(I), where λ is a partition ofk. This is used to obtain new orthogonality relations for the zonal polynomials, and to derive expressions for the coefficients in the zonal polynomial expansion of homogenous symmetric polynomials.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to extend the classical maximal convergence theory of Bernstein and Walsh for holomorphic functions in the complex plane to real analytic functions in ℝ N . In particular, we investigate the polynomial approximation behavior for functions F:L→ℂ, L={(Re z,Im z):zK}, of the structure F=g[`(h)]F=g\overline{h}, where g and h are holomorphic in a neighborhood of a compact set K⊂ℂ N . To this end the maximal convergence number ρ(S c ,f) for continuous functions f defined on a compact set S c ⊂ℂ N is connected to a maximal convergence number ρ(S r ,F) for continuous functions F defined on a compact set S r ⊂ℝ N . We prove that ρ(L,F)=min {ρ(K,h)),ρ(K,g)} for functions F=g[`(h)]F=g\overline{h} if K is either a closed Euclidean ball or a closed polydisc. Furthermore, we show that min {ρ(K,h)),ρ(K,g)}≤ρ(L,F) if K is regular in the sense of pluripotential theory and equality does not hold in general. Our results are based on the theory of the pluricomplex Green’s function with pole at infinity and Lundin’s formula for Siciak’s extremal function Φ. A properly chosen transformation of Joukowski type plays an important role.  相似文献

For polynomial maps in the complex plane, the notion of external rays plays an important role in determining the structure of and the dynamics on the Julia set. In this paper we consider an extension of these rays in the case of rational maps of the form Fλ(z) = z n + λ/z n where n > 1. As in the case of polynomials, there is an immediate basin of ∞, so we have similar external rays. We show how to extend these rays throughout the Julia set in three specific examples. Our extended rays are simple closed curves in the Riemann sphere that meet the Julia set in a Cantor set of points and also pass through countably many Fatou components. Unlike the external rays, these extended rays cross infinitely many other extended rays in a manner that helps determine the topology of the Julia set.  相似文献

Let λ be the upper Lyapunov exponent corresponding to a product of i.i.d. randomm×m matrices (X i) i 0/∞ over ℂ. Assume that theX i's are chosen from a finite set {D 0,D 1...,D t-1(ℂ), withP(X i=Dj)>0, and that the monoid generated byD 0, D1,…, Dq−1 contains a matrix of rank 1. We obtain an explicit formula for λ as a sum of a convergent series. We also consider the case where theX i's are chosen according to a Markov process and thus generalize a result of Lima and Rahibe [22]. Our results on λ enable us to provide an approximation for the numberN ≠0(F(x)n,r) of nonzero coefficients inF(x) n.(modr), whereF(x) ∈ ℤ[x] andr≥2. We prove the existence of and supply a formula for a constant α (<1) such thatN ≠0(F(x)n,r) ≈n α for “almost” everyn. Supported in part by FWF Project P16004-N05  相似文献

Let S be a discrete semigroup, let β S be the Stone-Čech compactification of S, and let T be a closed subsemigroup of β S. We characterize ultrafilters from the smallest ideal K(T) of T and from its closure c K(T). We show that, for a large class of closed subsemigroups of β S, c K(T) is not an ideal of T. This class includes the subsemigroups 0+β d and ℍ κ β( κ 2).  相似文献
