This paper studies an instance of price and quality competition between firms as seen in the recent Internet market. Consumers purchase a product based on not only its price but also its quality level; therefore, two firms compete in determining their prices and quality levels to maximize their profits. Characterizing this competition from a microeconomic viewpoint, we consider two possible business strategies that firms can utilize to overcome the competition—the differentiation and the vertical integration with another complementary firm. We show an interesting result not seen in the well-known Bertrand price competition: not only does the differentiation always increase the firms’ profits, but also it can increase the consumer’s welfare in a quality-sensitive market. We further derive that under some mild conditions the monopolistic vertical integration that excludes the combination-purchase with a competitor’s product is beneficial for both the integrated firm and its consumers.  相似文献

This paper analyzes strategic store openings in a situation in which firms can open multiple stores depending on the financial constraints of the firm. Specifically, given any upper limit of the number of store openings that two potentially symmetric firms can open, they sequentially determine the number of store openings, including their locations, to maximize their profits. As a result of our analysis in a microeconomic framework, we show that the equilibrium strategy can be wholly classified into only two following opposite strategies according to the level of their financial constraints involved. When firms can afford to invest significant amounts of money in the market, the leader chooses “segmentation strategy,” in which a part of the market can be monopolized by opening a chain of multiple stores and deterring the follower’s entry. In contrast, when the leader has a severe financial constraint so that it can only monopolize less than half of the market, the leader chooses “minimum differentiation strategy,” where firms open each of their stores at exactly the same point as the rival’s. Under this strategy, the leader necessarily captures just half of the market. Furthermore, we show that regardless of potential symmetry between firms, both first and second mover advantages in terms of profit can occur in the equilibrium.  相似文献

By mixing concepts from both game theoretic analysis and real options theory, an investment decision in a competitive market can be seen as a “game” between firms, as firms implicitly take into account other firms’ reactions to their own investment actions. We review two decades of real option game models, suggesting which critical problems have been “solved” by considering game theory, and which significant problems have not been yet adequately addressed. We provide some insights on the plausible empirical applications, or shortfalls in applications to date, and suggest some promising avenues for future research.  相似文献

Production processes in a wide range of industries rely on modern mixed-model assembly systems, which allow an efficient manufacture of various models of a common base product on the same assembly line. In order to facilitate a just-in-time supply of materials, the literature proposes various sequencing problems under the term “level scheduling”, which all aim at evenly smoothing the part consumption induced by the production sequence over time. Among these approaches, the popular product rate variation (PRV) problem is considered to be an appropriate approximate model, if either (i) all products require approximately the same number and mix of parts or (ii) part usages of all products are (almost completely) distinct. These statements are (iii) further specified by analytical findings, which prove the equivalence of product and material oriented level scheduling under certain conditions. These three prerequisites commonly cited in the literature when justifying the practical relevance of the PRV are evaluated by means of three simple computational experiments and are then discussed with regard to their relevance in practical settings. It is concluded that the PRV is in fact inappropriate for use in today’s real world mixed-model assembly systems.  相似文献

本文针对制造商在传统零售渠道和线上网络渠道同时销售标准产品的情况下,是否应该开放线上定制策略的相关问题进行分析。首先通过圆形市场模型完成市场划分;其次,在制造商不开放线上定制策略和开放线上定制策略两种情况下分别构建制造商和零售商利润最大化模型,得到了两种情况下的市场均衡结果。通过分析和比较两种情况下制造商和零售商的最优决策结果发现,当标准产品的边际生产成本较大且开放线上定制策略的成本较小时,制造商应该开放线上定制策略;制造商开放线上定制策略后,会使标准产品的批发价格和零售价格增加,并削弱零售商的利润;定制产品的生产成本越高,制造商开放定制产品的动机越小;消费者对标准产品的适应成本越高,制造商开放定制产品的动机越大。  相似文献

Advertising plays an important role in affecting consumer demand. Socially responsible firms are expected to use advertising judiciously, limiting advertising of “bad” products. An example is the advertising initiative adopted by several major food manufacturers to limit the advertising of unhealthy food categories to children. Such initiatives are based on the belief that less advertising will lead to less consumption of these unhealthy food categories. However, food manufacturers usually distribute products to consumers through retailers whose advertising is not restricted by those initiative programs. In this paper, we examine the effectiveness of such advertising initiative in a leader–follower supply chain with one manufacturer and one retailer. We assume that both the manufacturer and the retailer can choose to participate in the advertising initiative by reducing their advertising levels. The problem is formulated as a Stackelberg game. We show that the effectiveness of the advertising initiative critically depends on the leader’s participation in the initiative. If the leader is willing to reduce the advertising level below a threshold, the market coverage of the product can drop significantly. On the other hand, if only the follower participates in the initiative, the market coverage is likely to expand in the majority of cases. Managerial implications of this research are also discussed.  相似文献

We develop a competitive investment model wherein two competing firms consider investing into two projects targeting, separately, a mature and an emerging market. The returns firms obtain from investments into these markets are assumed to follow an S-shaped curve and depend on both firms’ actions. Considering symmetric environments (in terms of investment opportunities), we find that different forms of interactions may arise (e.g., Prisoner’s Dilemma and Game of Chicken) and outline corresponding strategies that offer higher returns by exploiting first-mover advantages, cooperation opportunities and aggressive choices. We also discuss the market conditions that can lead to these outcomes. Finally, considering non-symmetric environments, we show that a firm may be better off when its competitor’s budget increases.  相似文献

We introduce the concept of “stabilization by rotation” for deterministic linear systems with negative trace. This concept encompasses the well-known concept of “vibrational stabilization” introduced by Meerkov in the 1970s and is a deterministic version of ‘stabilization by noise’ for stochastic systems as introduced by Arnold and coworkers in the 1980s. It is shown that a linear system with negative trace can be stabilized by adding a skew-symmetric matrix, multiplied by a suitable scalar so-called “gain function” (possibly a constant) which is sufficiently large. To overcome the problem of what is “sufficiently large”, we also present a servo mechanism which tunes the gain function by learning from the trajectory until finally the trajectory tends to zero. This approach allows to show that one of Meerkov's assumptions for vibrational stabilization is superfluous. Moreover, while Meerkov as well as Arnold and coworkers assume that a stabilizing periodic function or the noise has sufficiently large frequency and amplitude, we also provide a servo mechanism to determine this function dynamically in a deterministic setup.  相似文献

The Internet has provided traditional retailers a new means with which to serve customers. Consequently, many “bricks-and-mortar” retailers have transformed to “clicks-and-mortar” by incorporating Internet sales. Examples of companies making such a transition include Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Barnes & Noble, etc. Despite the increasing prevalence of this practice, several fundamental questions remain: (1) Does it pay off to go online? (2) Which is the equilibrium industry structure? (3) What is the implication of this business model for consumers? We study these issues in an oligopoly setting and show that clicks-and-mortar arises as the equilibrium channel structure. However, we find that this equilibrium does not necessarily imply higher profits for the firms: in some cases, rather, it emerges as a strategic necessity. Consumers are generally better off with clicks-and-mortar retailers. If firms align with pure e-tailers to reach the online market, we show that a prisoner’s dilemma-type equilibrium may arise.  相似文献

Backward stability of the Casteljau algorithm and two more efficient algorithms for polynomial tensor product surfaces with interest in CAGD is shown. The conditioning of the corresponding bases are compared. These algorithms are also compared with the corresponding Horner algorithm and their higher accuracy is shown. A running error analysis of the algorithms is also carried out providing algorithms which calculate “a posteriori” sharp error bounds simultaneously to the evaluation of the surface without increasing significantly the computational cost.  相似文献

This paper addresses two important issues that may affect the operations efficiency in the recycling industry. First, the industry contains many small-scale and inefficient recycling firms, especially in developing countries. Second, the output from recycling a waste product often yields multiple recycled products that cannot all be sold efficiently by a single firm. To address these two issues, this paper examines how different firms can cooperate in their recycling and pricing decisions using cooperative game theory. Recycling operations under both joint and individual productions with different cost structures are considered. Decisions include the quantity of waste product to recycle and the price at which to sell each recycled product on each firm’s market. These decisions can be made jointly by multiple cooperating firms to maximize total profit. We design allocation schemes for maximized total profit to encourage cooperation among all firms. Managerial insights are provided from both environmental and economic perspectives.  相似文献

Using data from China’s individual health-insurance market, we study the problem of information asymmetry. Our preliminary results appear to contradict standard-model predictions, showing that higher-risk buyers are more likely to purchase “additional” insurance than lower-risk buyers, but that they also tend to purchase lower limits of “basic” insurance coverage. We therefore develop a theoretical model to capture the effects of buyers’ wealth levels and loss amounts, and show empirically that these effects, in the context of asymmetric information, lead to the coexistence of adverse selection and advantageous selection in China’s health-insurance market.  相似文献

In this paper we study a dynamic two-player channel where the manufacturer controls the wholesale price and the investment in quality and the retailer chooses the retail price. We consider that the retail price affects both the demand and the perceived quality of the brand and that its variations contribute to the building of an internal reference price. One of the model’s distinctive features is that it accounts for the two meanings of price, i.e., its classical objective measure of the cost of acquiring a particular quantity of the product, and its subjective roles as an assessment of the quality of the product and an evaluation of gains or losses (deal vs. sacrifice) resulting from buying a “cheap” or an “expensive” product. This dual computation is done with respect to the internal reference price.  相似文献

Managerial compensation packages do not only influence managers’ behavior, but also have an impact on competing firms. In a managerial delegation game investigating the latter aspect, it is shown that the inherent prisoner’s dilemma situation can be resolved (without changing the normally studied setup or timing). In the first stage, owners choose an incentive function for their managers, in the second stage they choose the weights assigned to that function besides profits and in the third stage managers play a Cournot game. Solving this continuous optimization problem with the implicit function theorem shows that choosing an incentive from the set of “multiplicative incentives”, i.e. any generalized affine transformation of the product of both firms’ quantities, which includes e.g. relative profit, ensures that the Stackelberg outcome is among the set of equilibrium outcomes. Furthermore, it is the unique outcome if the rival owner opts for one of the well-known incentives like sales, revenue or market share. The general approach used allows demonstrating that with no other linear incentive a Stackelberg outcome results and that incentives like profit-to-cost ratio should be avoided. Selecting a multiplicative incentive is a dominant strategy of the game.  相似文献

Motivated by the observations that the direct sales channel is increasingly used for customized products and that retailers wield leadership, we develop in this paper a retailer-Stackelberg pricing model to investigate the product variety and channel structure strategies of manufacturer in a circular spatial market. To avoid channel conflict, we consider the commonly observed case where the indirect channel sells standard products whereas the direct channel offers custom products. Our analytical results indicate that if the reservation price in the indirect channel is sufficiently low, adding the direct channel raises the unit wholesale price and retail price in the indirect channel due to customization in the direct channel. Despite the fact that dual channels for the retailer may dominate the single indirect channel, we find that the motivation for the manufacturer to use dual channels decreases with the unit production cost, while increases with (i) the marginal cost of variety, (ii) the retailer’s marginal selling cost, and (iii) the customer’s fit cost. Interestingly, our equilibrium analysis demonstrates that it is more likely for the manufacturer to use dual channels under the retailer Stackelberg channel leadership scenario than under the manufacturer Stackelberg scenario if offering a greater variety is very expensive. When offering a greater variety is inexpensive, the decentralization of the indirect channel may invert the manufacturer’s channel structure decision. Furthermore, endogenization of product variety will also invert the channel structure decision if the standard product’s reservation price is sufficiently low.  相似文献

The prosperity of multifunction products (also referred to as fusion products) has changed the landscape of the marketplace for several electronics products. To illustrate, as fusion products gain popularity in cellular phones and office machines, we observe that single-function products (e.g., stand-alone PDAs and stand-alone scanners) gradually disappear from the market as they are supplanted by fusion products. This paper presents a product diffusion model that captures the diffusion transition from two distinct single-function products into one fusion product. We investigate the optimal launch time of the fusion product under various conditions and conduct a numerical analysis to demonstrate the dynamics among the three products. Similar to previous multi-generation single product diffusion models, we find that the planning horizon, the products’ relative profit margin, and substitution effects are important to the launch time decision. However, there are several unique factors that warrant special consideration when a firm introduces a fusion product to the market: the firm’s competitive role, buyer consolidation of purchases to a multi-function product, the fusion technology and the age of current single-function products.  相似文献

In supply chain co-opetition, firms simultaneously compete and co-operate in order to maximize their profits. We consider the nature of co-opetition between two firms: The product supplier invests in the technology to improve quality, and the purchasing firm (buyer) invests in selling effort to develop the market for the product before uncertainty in demand is resolved. We consider three different decision making structures and discuss the optimal configuration from each firm’s perspective. In case 1, the supplier invests in product quality and sets the wholesale price for the product. The buyer then exerts selling effort to develop the market and following demand potential realization, sets the resale price. In case 2, the supplier invests in product quality followed by the buyer’s investment in selling effort. Then, after demand potential is observed, the supplier sets the wholesale price and the buyer sets the resale price. Finally, in case 3, both firms simultaneously invest in product quality and selling effort, respectively. Subsequently, observing the demand potential, the supplier sets the wholesale price and the buyer sets the resale price. We compare all configuration options from both the perspective of the supplier and the buyer, and show that the level of investment by the firms depends on the nature of competition between them and the level of uncertainty in demand. Our analysis reveals that although configuration 1 results in the highest profits for the integrated channel, there is no clear dominating preference on system configuration from the perspective of both parties. The incentives of the co-opetition partners and the investment levels are mainly governed by the cost structure and the level of uncertainty in demand. We examine and discuss the relation between system parameters and the incentives in desiging the supply contract structure.  相似文献

Traditional “Brick-and-Mortar” operations face the challenge of adapting to a new set of competitive rules made necessary by consumers who want the option of ordering electronically via the Internet. To satisfy these customers, firms must develop strategies that integrate their standard retail in-store channel with this relatively new on-line channel. Therefore, this research is designed to provide insights into supply chain inventory management strategies relevant to “Clicks-and-Mortar” firms trying to satisfy both on-line and in-store sales. Specifically, this work considers the total cost implications of various inventory allocation strategies while maintaining target customer service levels. Analysis focuses on the development of models capable of handling new operating strategies made possible by electronic commerce. The implications of inventory risk pooling are considered in depth, revealing the existence of characteristics that determine whether completely centralized or decentralized policies are preferable.  相似文献

An oligopoly model is presented that allows the determination of feedback Nash equilibrium advertising strategies for an oligopoly. Analyses of symmetric and asymmetric oligopolies with the model show that unit contribution and advertising effectiveness have positive effects on a competitor’s own advertising and steady-state sales, while discount rate and decay rate have negative effects. An asymmetric analysis further shows that unit contribution and advertising effectiveness affect positively, and discount rate and decay rate negatively, a competitor’s rivals’ advertising, but have effects in opposite directions regarding rivals’ steady-state sales. The symmetric and asymmetric analyses also show that steady-state sales per competitor decline with the number of competitors in the oligopoly, while total oligopoly steady-state sales increase. The model is applied empirically to the triopolistic competition involving Anheuser-Busch, SABMiller, and Molson Coors in the beer industry.  相似文献
