Characterization through distributional properties of dual generalized order statistics

Distributional properties of two non-adjacent dual generalized order statistics have been used to characterize distributions. Further, one sided contraction and dilation for the dual generalized order statistics are discussed and then the results are deduced for generalized order statistics, order statistics, lower record statistics, upper record statistics and adjacent dual generalized order statistics.

一类相合的分位点型检验

基于情景分析的多维拟凸风险统计量

本文定义了三类特殊的多维风险统计量,分别是多维共单调拟凸风险统计量、多维拟凸风险统计量和多维经验分布不变拟凸风险统计量,并采用对偶方法给出了它们的表示定理.本文的结果既是一维拟凸风险统计量的推广,也是多维凸风险统计量的拓展.     

Introducing the Emerging Discipline of Statistics Education

Increasing attention has been given over the last decade by the statistics, mathematics and science education communities to the development of statistical literacy and numeracy skills of all citizens and the enhancement of statistics education at all levels. This paper introduces the emerging discipline of statistics education and considers its role in the development of these important skills. The paper begins with information on the growing importance of statistics in today's society, schools and colleges, summarizes unique challenges students face as they learn statistics, and makes a case for the importance of collaboration between mathematicians and statisticians in preparing teachers to teach students how to understand and reason about data. We discuss the differences and interrelations between statistics and mathematics, recognizing that mathematics is the discipline that has traditionally included instruction in statistics. We conclude with an argument that statistics should be viewed as a bridge between mathematics and science and should be taught in both disciplines.     

On exceedances of record and order statistics

Exact, limiting distributions along with their rates of convergence of exceedance statistics for both order statistics and record statistics are provided when the underlying distribution is arbitrary. The exact distribution of record statistics for arbitrary underlying distributions is obtained as well.

     

Multiple Window Scan Statistics for Two Dimensional Poisson Processes

In this article, approximations for the distribution of multiple window scan statistics for Poisson Processes on a two dimensional rectangular region are derived, for the conditional and unconditional model. These multiple window scan statistics are based on the minimum of p-values and repeated minimum p-values of fixed window scan statistics. Numerical results are presented to evaluate the performance of these multiple window scan statistics and compare their power with fixed window scan statistics for selected local type alternatives.

Asymptotic Results on a General Class of Empirical Statistics: Power and Confidence Interval Properties

We consider a very general class of empirical statistics that includes (a) empirical discrepancy (ED) statistics, (b) generalized empirical exponential family likelihood statistics, (c) generalized empirical likelihood statistics, (d) empirical statistics arising from Bayesian considerations, and (e) Bartlett-type adjusted versions of ED statistics. With reference to this general class, we investigate higher order asymptotics on power and expected lengths of confidence intervals. For (b)-(e), such results have been hitherto unexplored. Furthermore, our findings help in understanding the presently known results on the subclass (a) from a wider perspective.     

Strong Domain of Attraction of Extreme Generalized Order Statistics

It is a well-known result in extreme value theory that the von Mises conditions imply the strong convergence of extreme order statistics. We extend this result to extreme generalized order statistics. A characterization of strong domains of attraction of joint distributions of a fixed number of extreme generalized order statistics by means of the corresponding result for generalized maxima is given. In particular, we determine the asymptotic joint distribution of (upper and lower) extreme generalized order statistics. Finally, we show that the Hill estimator based on extreme generalized order statistics is asymptotic normal.     

Attitudes and perceived usefulness of statistics among health sciences students

A questionnaire was completed at the cessation of semester 2 in November 1989 by 102 postgraduate and 58 undergraduate health sciences students studying introductory statistics units. The questionnaire measured; (i) the student's attitude towards statistics, (ii) the way in which they learned statistics, (iii) the student's intention to pursue further statistics training, and (iv) the perceived usefulness of statistics in their professions. It was found that the learning of statistics would be enhanced by smaller tutorial groups, and more exposure to computer printouts to assist in interpretation of results. An emphasis on the understanding of statistics presented in journal articles should be a priority. It was also apparent that the more computer and research experience the student had prior to commencing the course, the greater the likelihood of a positive attitude towards statistics. However, both undergraduate and postgraduate students indicated that they would not enrol in an advanced biostatistics course, but would rather consult a statistician when necessary. Suggestions for more effective statistical teaching for health sciences students are also discussed.     

A generalized Hollander-Proschan type test for NBUE alternatives

In this note we develop a family of test statistics for testing exponentiality against NBUE alternatives. The asymptotic distribution of the test statistics is derived. The test statistics are shown to be asymptotically normal and consistent. This family of test statistics includes the test proposed by Hollander and Proschan (1975) as a special case. Efficiency studies have also been done.     

SOME COMPARISONS BETWEEN GENERALIZED ORDER STATISTICS

Some stochastic comparisons of generalized order statistics under the right spread order,the location independent riskier order and the total time transform order are investigated in this paper.The underlying distributions and parameters on which generalized order statistics are based are also surveyed to obtain the conditions for increasing the expectations of spacings between the first two generalized order statistics and between the last two generalized order statistics.     

Some necessary uniform tests for spherical symmetry

While spherical distributions have been used in many statistical models for high-dimensional data analysis, there are few easily implemented statistics for testing spherical symmetry for the underlying distribution of high-dimensional data. Many existing statistics for this purpose were constructed by the theory of empirical processes and turn out to converge slowly to their limiting distributions. Some existing statistics for the same purpose were given in the form of high-dimensional integrals that are not easily evaluated in numerical computation. In this paper, we develop some necessary tests for spherical symmetry based on both univariate and multivariate uniform statistics. These statistics are easily evaluated numerically and have simple limiting distributions. A Monte Carlo study is carried out to demonstrate the performance of the statistics on controlling type I error rates and power.     

On distribution of Grubbs’ statistics in case of normal sample with outlier

We investigate one-sided Grubbs’ statistics for a normal sample. Those statistics are standardized maximum and standardized minimum, i.e., studentized extreme deviation statistics. We consider the case of the sample when there is one abnormal observation (outlier), unknown to what number according. The outlier differs from other observations in values of population mean and dispersion. We obtain recursive relationships for the marginal distribution function of one-sided Grubbs’ statistics. We find asymptotic formulas for marginal distribution functions. We obtain recursive relationships for the joint distribution function of one-sided Grubbs’ statistics and investigate its properties.     

Application of algebraic properties of statistical models to deriving distributions of statistics

The problem of deriving distributions of statistics arises rather frequently in mathematical statistics. Here the method of functional equations is justified for the exponential shift families, and universal formulas for the distributions of sufficient statistics and statistics related to them are obtained. 两指标双F统计过程控制图

当产品质量指标服从二元正态分时,可用T2控制图与Λ控制图联合判断产品生产的过程是否处于受控状态。本文利用T2统计量与F统计量、Λ统计量与F统计量之间的关系,得到了两指标情形下两类基于F分布统计量的统计过程控制图,简称双F统计过程控制图,并给出了控制图应用实例。
