Characterizations of completeness of normed spaces through weakly unconditionally Cauchy series

In this paper we obtain two new characterizations of completeness of a normed space through the behaviour of its weakly unconditionally Cauchy series. We also prove that barrelledness of a normed space X can be characterized through the behaviour of its weakly-* unconditionally Cauchy series in X*.     

On the James constant and B-convexity of Cesàro and Cesàro-Orlicz sequence spaces

The classical James constant and the nth James constants, which are measure of B-convexity for the Cesàro sequence spaces cesp and the Cesàro-Orlicz sequence spaces cesM, are calculated. These investigations show that cesp,cesM are not uniformly non-square and even they are not B-convex. Therefore the classical Cesàro sequence spaces cesp are natural examples of reflexive spaces which are not B-convex. Moreover, the James constant for the two-dimensional Cesàro space is calculated.     

On matrix mappings into some strong Cesàro sequence spaces

We determine the classes (X, Y_T) of matrix transformations from X into Y_T where X is one of the classical sequence spaces c₀, c, ?_∞ and ?₁ of all null, convergent and bounded complex sequences and all absolutely convergent complex series, T is a triangle, Y_T is the matrix domain of T in Y and Y is any of the sets of all sequences that are summable, summable to zero or bounded by the strong Cesàro method of order 1, with index 1 ? p < ∞. Furthermore, we determine the representations of the general bounded linear operators from c into Y. We also establish estimates for the norms of the operators in each case.     

Resolvent estimates and decomposable extensions of generalized Cesàro operators

We determine the spectrum of generalized Cesàro operators with essentially rational symbols acting on various spaces of analytic functions, including Hardy spaces, weighted Bergman and Dirichlet spaces. Then we show that in all cases these operators are subdecomposable.     

Cesàro operators on Hardy spaces in the unit ball

This article establishes the boundedness of the generalized Cesàro operator on holomorphic Hardy spaces in the unit ball. The approach consists in writing the generalized Cesàro operator as a composition of certain integral operators.     

A note on Cesàro-Orlicz sequence spaces

The condition δ₂ in Cesàro-Orlicz sequence spaces equipped with the Luxemburg norm is discussed. The comparison theorem for these spaces is presented. Some counterexamples are provided.     

Another look at Cesàro sequence spaces

We consider the Cesàro sequence space cesp as a closed subspace of the infinite ?p-sum of finite dimensional spaces. We easily obtain many known results, for example, cesp has property (β) of Rolewicz, uniform Opial property, and weak uniform normal structure. We also consider some generalized Cesàro sequence spaces. Finally, we compute the von Neumann-Jordan and James constants of the two-dimensional Cesàro sequence space when 1<p?2.     

On lacunary statistical convergence of order α

In this article, we introduce the concept of lacunary statistical convergence of order α of real number sequences and give some inclusion relations between the sets of lacunary statistical convergence of order α and strong N_θ^α(p)-summability. Furthermore, some relations between the spaces N_θ^αS_θ^α are examined.     

On the Libera operator

We show that the Libera operator, L, on some spaces of analytic functions is a continuous extension of the conjugate of the Cesàro operator. Results on L acting on various spaces are obtained. In particular, L maps the Bloch space into BMOA. We also prove some results on the best approximation by polynomials in Hardy and Bergman spaces.     

Lacunary Sets and Function Spaces with Finite Cotype

We investigate translation invariant subspaces of the space of uniformly convergent Fourier series and Orlicz spaces, with finite cotype. In the case of Orlicz spaces, this leads to some new characterizations of p-Rider sets.     

Convergence rate of Cesàro means of Fourier-Laplace series

The convergence rate of Fourier-Laplace series in logarithmic subclasses of L²(Σd) defined in terms of moduli of continuity is of interest. Lin and Wang [C. Lin, K. Wang, Convergence rate of Fourier-Laplace series of L²-functions, J. Approx. Theory 128 (2004) 103-114] recently presented a characterization of those subclasses and provided the almost everywhere convergence rates of Fourier-Laplace series in those subclasses. In this note, the almost everywhere convergence rates of the Cesàro means for Fourier-Laplace series of the logarithmic subclasses are obtained. The strong approximation order of the Cesàro means and the partial summation operators are also presented.     

New Sobolev spaces via generalized Poincaré inequalities on metric measure spaces

In this paper, we introduce some new function spaces of Sobolev type on metric measure spaces. These new function spaces are defined by variants of Poincaré inequalities associated with generalized approximations of the identity, and they generalize the classical Sobolev spaces on Euclidean spaces. We then obtain two characterizations of these new Sobolev spaces including the characterization in terms of a variant of local sharp maximal functions associated with generalized approximations of the identity. For the well-known Hajłasz–Sobolev spaces on metric measure spaces, we also establish some new characterizations related to generalized approximations of the identity. Finally, we clarify the relations between the Sobolev-type spaces introduced in this paper and the Hajłasz–Sobolev spaces on metric measure spaces.     

Spaces of S Bounded Multiplier Convergent Series

We prove that some results on uniform convergence of sequences of unconditionally convergent series, in Banach spaces, can be generalized to sequences of weakly unconditionally Cauchy series. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Local rotundity structure of Cesàro-Orlicz sequence spaces

Some criteria for extreme points and strong U-points in Cesàro-Orlicz spaces are given. In consequence we find a Cesàro-Orlicz sequence space different from c₀ which has no extreme points. Some examples show that in these spaces the notion of the strong U-point is essentially stronger than the notion of the extreme point. Various examples presented in this paper show that there are some differences between criteria for extreme points and strong U-points in Orlicz spaces and in Cesàro-Orlicz spaces. We also show that the uniqueness of the local best approximation needs the notion of SU-point, that is, the notion of the extreme point is not strong enough here.     

A condition under which slow oscillation of a sequence follows from Cesàro summability of its generator sequence

In this paper we retrieve slow oscillation of a real sequence from Cesàro summability of its generator sequence under some one-sided condition.     

A Komlós Theorem for abstract Banach lattices of measurable functions

Consider a Banach function space X(μ) of (classes of) locally integrable functions over a σ-finite measure space (Ω,Σ,μ) with the weak σ-Fatou property. Day and Lennard (2010) [9] proved that the theorem of Komlós on convergence of Cesàro sums in L¹[0,1] holds also in these spaces; i.e. for every bounded sequence n(fn) in X(μ), there exists a subsequence k(fnk) and a function f∈X(μ) such that for any further subsequence j(hj) of k(fnk), the series converges μ-a.e. to f. In this paper we generalize this result to a more general class of Banach spaces of classes of measurable functions — spaces L¹(ν) of integrable functions with respect to a vector measure ν on a δ-ring — and explore to which point the Fatou property and the Komlós property are equivalent. In particular we prove that this always holds for ideals of spaces L¹(ν) with the weak σ-Fatou property, and provide an example of a Banach lattice of measurable functions that is Fatou but do not satisfy the Komlós Theorem.

Orlicz-Pettis Polynomials on Banach Spaces

 We introduce the class of Orlicz-Pettis polynomials between Banach spaces, defined by their action on weakly unconditionally Cauchy series. We give a number of equivalent definitions, examples and counterexamples which highlight the differences between these polynomials and the corresponding linear operators.
