Using normal mode technique it has been shown that (i) values of the anisotropy parameter are important in deciding the mode of convection in a doubly diffusive fluid saturating a porous medium. (ii) Depending on the values of the Soret and Dufour parameters, an increase in anisotropy parameter either promotes or inhibits instability, (iii) cross-diffusion induces instability even in a potentially stable set-up and (iv) for certain values of the Dufour and Soret parameters there is a discontinuity in the critical thermal Rayleigh number, which disappears if the porous medium has horizontal isotropy.  相似文献

A numerical model is developed to examine the combined effects of Soret and Dufour on mixed convection magnetohydrodynamic heat and mass transfer in micropolar fluid-saturated Darcian porous medium in the presence of thermal radiation, non-uniform heat source/sink and Ohmic dissipation. The governing boundary layer equations for momentum, angular momentum (microrotation), energy and species transfer are transformed to a set of non-linear ordinary differential equations by using similarity solutions which are then solved numerically based on shooting algorithm with Runge–Kutta–Fehlberg integration scheme over the entire range of physical parameters with appropriate boundary conditions. The influence of Darcy number, Prandtl number, Schmidt number, Soret number and Dufour number, magnetic parameter, local thermal Grashof number and local solutal Grashof number on velocity, temperature and concentration fields are studied graphically. Finally, the effects of related physical parameters on local Skin-friction, local Nusselt number and local Sherwood number are also studied. Results showed that the fields were influenced appreciably by the Soret and Dufour effects, thermal radiation and magnetic field, etc.  相似文献

The double diffusive convection in a horizontal anisotropic porous layer saturated with a Boussinesq fluid, which is heated and salted from below in the presence of Soret coefficient is studied analytically using both linear and nonlinear stability analyses. The normal mode technique is used in the linear stability analysis while a weak nonlinear analysis based on a minimal representation of double Fourier series method is used in the nonlinear analysis. The generalized Darcy model including the time derivative term is employed for the momentum equation. The critical Rayleigh number, wavenumber for stationary and oscillatory modes and frequency of oscillations are obtained analytically using linear theory. The effect of anisotropy parameters, solute Rayleigh number, Soret parameter and Lewis number on the stationary, oscillatory, finite amplitude convection and heat and mass transfer are shown graphically.  相似文献

The linear and weakly nonlinear stability analysis of the quiescent state in a viscoelastic fluid subject to vertical solute concentration and temperature gradients is investigated. The non-Newtonian behavior of the viscoelastic fluid is characterized using the Oldroyd model. Analytical expressions for the critical Rayleigh numbers and corresponding wave numbers for the onset of stationary or oscillatory convection subject to cross diffusion effects is determined. A stability diagram clearly demarcates non-overlapping regions of finger and diffusive instabilities. A Lorenz system is obtained in the case of the weakly nonlinear stability analysis. The effect of Dufour and Soret parameters on the heat and mass transports are determined and discussed. Due to consideration of dilute concentrations of the second diffusing component the route to chaos in binary viscoelastic fluid systems is similar to that of single-component (thermal) viscoelastic fluid systems.  相似文献

The effect of rotation on the onset of double diffusive convection in a horizontal couple stress fluid-saturated porous layer, which is heated and salted from below, is studied analytically using both linear and weak nonlinear stability analyses. The extended Darcy model, which includes the time derivative and Coriolis terms, has been employed in the momentum equation. The onset criterion for stationary, oscillatory and finite amplitude convection is derived analytically. The effect of Taylor number, couple stress parameter, solute Rayleigh number, Lewis number, Darcy–Prandtl number, and normalized porosity on the stationary, oscillatory, and finite amplitude convection is shown graphically. It is found that the rotation, couple stress parameter and solute Rayleigh number have stabilizing effect on the stationary, oscillatory, and finite amplitude convection. The Lewis number has a stabilizing effect in the case of stationary and finite amplitude modes, with a destabilizing effect in the case of oscillatory convection. The Darcy–Prandtl number and normalized porosity advances the onset of oscillatory convection. A weak nonlinear theory based on the truncated representation of Fourier series method is used to find the finite amplitude Rayleigh number and heat and mass transfer. The transient behavior of the Nusselt number and Sherwood number is investigated by solving the finite amplitude equations using Runge–Kutta method.  相似文献

A study has been carried out to analyze the combined effects of Soret (thermal-diffusion) and Dufour (diffusion-thermo) on unsteady MHD non-Darcy mixed convection over a stretching sheet embedded in a saturated porous medium in the presence of thermal radiation, viscous dissipation and first-order chemical reaction. Energy equation takes into account of viscous dissipation, thermal radiation and Soret effects. The governing differential equations are transformed into a set of non-linear coupled ordinary differential equations and solved using similarity analysis with numerical technique using appropriate boundary conditions for various physical parameters. The numerical solution for the governing nonlinear boundary value problem is based on shooting algorithm with Runge–Kutta–Fehlberg integration scheme over the entire range of physical parameters. The effects of various physical parameters on the dimensionless velocity, temperature and concentration profiles are depicted graphically and analyzed in detail. Favorable comparisons with previously published work on various special cases of the problem are obtained. Numerical results for local skin-friction, local Nusselt number, and local Sherwood number are tabulated for different physical parameters.  相似文献

The onset of convection in a ternary horizontal porous fluid layer, heated from below and salted from above and below, in the presence of Soret thermo-diffusive effects (in the Darcy–Boussinesq scheme) is investigated. Via a new approach (“auxiliary system method”), it is shown that do not exist subcritical instabilities and that the global nonlinear stability is guaranteed by the linear stability. The Soret stabilizing-destabilizing effects, via algebraic conditions in closed forms, are obtained also discovering symmetries and skew-symmetries hidden in the Darcy–Boussinesq equations.  相似文献

The heat and mass transfer characteristics of natural convection about a vertical surface embedded in a doubly stratified saturated porous medium subjected to a magnetic field is studied, taking into account the Dufour and Soret effects. It is found that the similarity solution exists for the case of uniform surface heat and mass flux conditions when the thermal and solutal stratification of the medium are assumed to have power function form x1/3. The resulting set of ordinary coupled nonlinear differential equations is solved numerically using shooting technique. In this investigation, thermal radiation effect over an electrically conducting, Newtonian fluid in a steady laminar magnetohydrodynamic convective flow over a porous rotating infinite disk with the consideration of heat and mass transfer in the presence of Soret and Dufour diffusion effects is investigated. The partial differential equations governing the problem under consideration are transformed by a similarity transformation into a system of ordinary differential equations which are solved numerically using fourth order Runge–Kutta based shooting method. The effects of the magnetic interaction parameter, slip flow parameter, Soret number, Dufour number, Schmidt number, radiation parameter, Prandtl number and suction parameter on the fluid velocity, temperature and concentration distributions in the regime are depicted graphically and are analyzed in detail. The corresponding skin-friction coefficients, the Nusselt number and the Sherwood number are also calculated and displayed in tables showing the effects of various parameters on them.  相似文献

The problem of thermal convection is investigated for a layer of fluid when the heat flux law of Cattaneo is adopted. The boundary conditions are those appropriate to two fixed surfaces. It is shown that for small Cattaneo number the critical Rayleigh number initially increases from its classical value of 1707.765 until a critical value of the Cattaneo number is reached. For Cattaneo numbers greater than this critical value a notable Hopf bifurcation is observed with convection occurring at lower Rayleigh numbers and by oscillatory rather than stationary convection. The aspect ratio of the convection cells likewise changes.  相似文献

The linear stability of triply diffusive convection in a binary Maxwell fluid saturated porous layer is investigated. Applying the normal mode method theory, the criterion for the onset of stationary and oscillatory convection is obtained. The modified Darcy–Maxwell model is used as the analysis model, this allows us to make a thorough investigation of the processes of viscoelasticity and diffusions that causes the convection to set in through oscillatory rather than stationary. The effects of Vadasz number, normalized porosity parameter, relaxation parameter, Lewis number and solute Rayleigh number on the system are presented numerically and graphically.  相似文献

就竖直平板嵌入非Darcy多孔介质中,导电流体流过平板时作不稳定的二维磁流体(MHD)双扩散对流,数值研究了Dufour和Soret效应对流动的影响.用Crank-Nicolson型的隐式有限差分法,按三对角矩阵处理,求解无量纲的非线性控制方程.详细地研究了问题中出现的各种参数对不稳定无量纲的速度、温度和浓度曲线的影响.进一步地,给出并分析了表面摩擦因数、Nus-selt数和Sherwood数随时间的变化.研究结果表明,不稳定速度、温度和浓度分布曲线,受Dufour和Soret的影响十分显著.随着Dufour数的增加或者Soret数的减小,表面摩擦因数和Sherwood数都在减小,而Nusselt数在增加.研究发现,当磁场参数增加时,边界层中的速度和温度在减小.  相似文献

An analysis is carried out to study free convective heat and mass transfer of an incompressible, electrically conducting fluid over a stretching sheet in the presence of suction and injection with thermal-diffusion (Soret) and diffusion-thermo (Dufour) effects. The similarity solutions are obtained using scaling transformations. Furthermore, the similarity equations are solved numerically by using shooting technique with fourth-order Runge–Kutta integration scheme. A comparison with previously published work is performed and the results are found to be in good agreement. Numerical results of the local skin friction coefficient, the local Nusselt number and the local Sherwood number as well as the velocity, the temperature and the concentration profiles are presented for different physical parameters. The result indicates: (i) for fluids with medium molecular weight (H2, air), Dufour and Soret effects should not be neglected; and (ii) the suction and injection parameter has significant impact in controlling the rate of heat transfer in the boundary layer.  相似文献

This paper addresses the problem of the onset of Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a porous layer using Brinkman's equation and anisotropic permeability. The critical Rayleigh number and wave number at marginal stabilities are calculated for both free and rigid boundaries. In both cases, it is noted that there exist ranges for which the stability criteria is intermediate to the low porosity Darcy approximation and to high porosity single viscous fluid. The permeability anisotropy is found to select the mode of instability.  相似文献

This paper deals with the theoretical investigation of the effect of magnetic field dependent (MFD) viscosity on the thermal convection in a ferromagnetic fluid in the presence of dust particles. For a flat ferromagnetic fluid layer contained between two free boundaries, the exact solution is obtained using a linear stability analysis and a normal mode analysis method. For the case of stationary convection, dust particles always have a destabilizing effect, whereas the MFD viscosity has a stabilizing effect on the onset of convection. In the absence of MFD viscosity, the destabilizing effect of magnetization is depicted but in the presence of MFD viscosity, non-buoyancy magnetization may have a destabilizing or a stabilizing effect on the onset of convection. The critical wave number and critical magnetic thermal Rayleigh number for the onset of stationary convection are also determined numerically for sufficiently large values of buoyancy magnetization parameter M 1. Graphs have been plotted by giving numerical values to the parameters to depict the stability characteristics. It is observed that the critical magnetic thermal Rayleigh number is reduced solely because the heat capacity of clean fluid is supplemented by that of the dust particles. The principle of exchange of stabilities is found to hold true for the ferromagnetic fluid heated from below in the absence of dust particles. The oscillatory modes are introduced due to the presence of the dust particles, which were non-existent in their absence. A sufficient condition for the non-existence of overstability is also obtained.  相似文献

A study has been carried out to obtain the solutions for heat and mass transfer from natural convection flow along a vertical surface with temperature-dependent fluid viscosity embedded in a porous medium due to thermal-diffusion (Soret) and diffusion-thermo (Dufour) effects. This paper concerns with a steady two-dimensional flow of incompressible fluid over a vertical stretching sheet. The fluid viscosity is assumed to vary as a linear function of temperature. A scaling group of transformations is applied to the governing equations. The impact of thermophoresis particle deposition with chemical reaction in the presence of thermal-diffusion and diffusion-thermo effects plays an important role on the temperature and concentration boundary layer. The results thus obtained are presented graphically and discussed.  相似文献

The critical Rayleigh thermal numbers at which steady and Hopf convection can occur, are determined. Sufficient conditions guaranteeing the effective onset of convection via steady or oscillatory state are provided.

Thermal instability of a micropolar fluid layer heated from below in the presence of hall currents is investigated. Using the appropriate boundary conditions on the boundary surfaces of the fluid layer, the frequency equation is derived and then critical Rayleigh number is determined. It is found that hall current parameter has destabilizing effect on the system. For specific values of parameters, oscillatory convection in observed in the system. The behavior of Rayleigh number with wavenumber is also computed for different values of various parameters. The results of some earlier workers have been reduced as a special case from the present problem.  相似文献
